Ours or theirs? Rhossili Bay, Wales vs Wineglass Bay, Tasmania
OK, this is war. To paraphrase Winston Churchill, we will fight them on the beaches.
Who are we fighting on beaches? Britain, that's who. And we're fighting them because of an incredibly deluded UK newspaper poll result in which two out of three respondents preferred a Welsh beach ahead of an Australian beach.
Seriously, the Poms prefer their own miserable beaches to ours. Read it and weep right here at Telegraph.co.uk.
Well, at least that explains why they've done their best to turn Bondi into the sort of stinking cesspit to which they are accustomed.
Earlier this week, the website TripAdvisor.com released a list of the world's 10 best beaches. Only one Australian beach cracked the top 10 (Whitehaven in Queensland) alongside one British beach (Rhossili Bay in Wales).
That struck us as a little misguided, so we got straight on the phone to Rhossili Bay to discover what made the place so appealing.
Julian Short, proprietor of the Worm's Head Hotel in Rhossili, answered our call. To be frank, we were impressed with Mr Short's tales of hot pasties on the smooth, surprisingly unpebbly sand.
Then we discovered that the water at Rhossili Bay is currently six degrees, and that it's not much warmer in summer.
And we pretty much went nope, not sold.

Planetary Society Hangout: Asteroid Astronomy with Andy Rivkin
Emily Lakdawalla #39;s guest this week was Applied Physics Laboratory asteroid astronomer Andy Rivkin. We talked about the menagerie of rocks in the asteroid belt, how many of them travel in pairs and triples, how some of them are surprisingly wet, and how much you can learn about asteroids using Earth-based telescopes.

Detail of breast cancer cells. Over a lifetime, one in eight women is diagnosed with breast cancer.
At first sight, an image of deep space and a slide of cancer cells may not appear to have much in common. However by using technology used to identify distant galaxies to spot rogue cancer cells, a team of scientists in the U.K. have managed to bridge that gap.
Scientists at the charity Cancer Research UK teamed up with researchers from the Institute of Astronomy in 2010 in an unlikely collaboration that could radically improve the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
(MORE: Among Breast Cancer Screens, Pricey Isnt Always Better)
The first results of that collaboration were published in the British Journal of Cancer on Wednesday. Researchers were able to adapt techniques used by astronomers for picking up faint objects of interest out of dense images of the night-sky to pick out differences in stained tumor samples.
Raza Ali, the lead author of the study from Cancer Research, said in a statement: Weve exploited the natural overlap between the techniques astronomers use to analyze deep sky imaged from the largest telescopes and the need to pinpoint subtle differences in the staining of tumor samples down the microscope.
Cancer Research say that spotting these differences is key to the understanding of why some cancers progress faster than others, as well as of why patients respond differently to treatments.
(MORE: Cancer Rates Dropping, But Not for All Tumor Types)
Up until now, the traditional means of picking out the differences in the staining of tumor samples required the trained eye of a pathologist looking down a microscope. This new automated system could dramatically speed up that process, analyzing up to 4,000 individual images a day.

An astronomy observation event will be held Saturday night at Pilot Mountain State Park.
Members of the Forsyth Astronomical Society, the rangers of Pilot Mountain State Park, and SciWorks Planetarium staff will host the event from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday.
The public is invited to attend the free event. If weather conditions are favorable, the spring constellations and several deep-sky objects will be visible. It's an excellent opportunity to learn about astronomy and telescopes as there will be knowledgeable amateur astronomers on hand to answer questions.
Participants will meet in the summit parking lot of Pilot Mountain State Park. The park gates will remain open until the end of the event so that visitors may arrive or depart as they wish.
(As a courtesy to those present, visitors who arrive after dark should turn off their headlights and drive slowly using only parking lights once they reach the summit parking lot.)
Inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances may cancel the observation or cause it to end early. For cancellation information, please call SciWorks at (336) 767-6730 after 5:30 p.m. on March 2.

For the last several months, Gregory Bloom has worried about his small Irvine aerospace business and what would happen if federal funds were held back or "sequestered" because of Congress' inability to reach a budget agreement.
And now his worst fears are approaching. Cuts in the nation's defense budget could total $3.2 billion in California alone, and Bloom knows the Southland could be hit hard in the months ahead with payrolls, contracts and plans all in doubt.
"We could wake up and face a world we've never seen before," Bloom said. "We can't make long-term decisions on an uncertain future."
As president of Seal Science Inc., a maker of rubber gaskets for fighter jets, Bloom made several trips to Washington to warn lawmakers that the defense industry could be severely harmed by the cuts.
On Friday, $85 billion in federal spending is set to be slashed over the final seven months of this fiscal year unless Congress reaches an agreement on reducing the mounting federal deficit. Defense programs are expected to be cut about 15% for the remainder of the fiscal year, according to the White House.
Specific cuts to programs remain largely a mystery, but for companies such as Seal Science, with 120 employees, alarm bells are ringing. Bloom has held back on hiring and investing in new machinery because he has no idea what to expect.
He's not alone. Thousands of Southern California aerospace suppliers many with only a handful of workers collectively employ more than 162,000 people in California. With jobs on the line and state unemployment already at 9.8% at the end of 2012, all eyes are on Washington.
Sequestration's biggest effect would be to California with an estimated $3.2-billion cut in military spending on procurement, wages and grants, according to data compiled by Federal Funds Information for States, a service created by the National Governors Assn. and the National Conference of State Legislatures.
Rep. Howard P. "Buck" McKeon (R-Santa Clarita), chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said he believes sequestration will go forward and that Congress is playing political chicken with people's jobs by not coming to an agreement.
"There's going to be drastic consequences for California," he said. "The large companies will survive, but the small companies don't have the finances to wait this thing out."
