Oreskes, professor at NYC’s Hunter College, dies

NEW YORK A professor emeritus at New York City's Hunter College who studied biochemistry and taught laboratory science has died. Irwin Oreskes was 86.

He suffered a brain hemorrhage after a fall and died Friday in Manhattan.

Oreskes was a beloved teacher and mentor to generations of students. He was a member of the City University of New York doctoral faculty in biochemistry until his retirement from Hunter College in 2003.

In 1970, he founded the college's Medical Laboratory Sciences Program, the largest clinical technology program in New York state.

He took pride in the economically disadvantaged students and minorities he mentored and encouraged in their careers.

Oreskes was a 1949 graduate of City College. He received a master's degree from Brooklyn College and a doctorate from CUNY. He served in the Army during World War II.

"Why Fudge THS ? Mainly because I don't like GURPS as a game system, although I love the THS setting. So I needed to adapt it to a system I prefer. I chose Fudge because I like Fudge 🙂 . I know it can sound stupid to try to adapt a crunchy system like GURPS with a Hard-Science setting like THS to a dumb-stupid system like Fudge. But I wanted to see if this was doable. I let you judge. A complete system: I wanted not just to adapt GTHS to Fudge, where basically you have GTHS running in the background and Fudge as a front layer (a bit like DOS running behind Win98). I wanted to have a complete independent system, and I designed my own way, which is not necessarily the Fudge way or the GURPS way. Therefore I don't simply use the GURPS Attributes, Skills and Advantages/Disadvantages system, I chose to design my own list of Attributes, Skills and Gifts & Faults. Of course FTHS is strongly inspired by GTHS - through the free GURPS Lite (pdf) ruleset, so the GTHS aficionados won't be totally lost. Complete GTHS to FTHS Conversion guidelines are provided. I also mixed the THS setting with some personal ideas & adaptations which are clearly signalled by the sign. WASHINGTON, March 1, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --Family Research Council (FRC) Senior Fellow Dr. David Prentice, a native Kansan, congratulated the Kansas state senate for passing S.B. 199, a bill that would establish the Midwest Stem Cell Therapy Center, a regional hub to advance and deliver adult and cord blood stem cell therapies to patients and serving as a resource for adult and cord blood stem cells for therapies. The Center would also inform professionals and the public about such therapies.

How spirituality induces liberal attitudes

(Phys.org) People become more politically liberal immediately after practising a spiritual exercise such as meditation, researchers at the University of Toronto have found.

"There's great overlap between religious beliefs and political orientations," says one of the study authors, Jordan Peterson of U of T's Department of Psychology. "We found that religious individuals tend to be more conservative and spiritual people tend to be more liberal.

"Inducing a spiritual experience through a guided meditation exercise led both liberals and conservatives to endorse more liberal political attitudes."

Lead author Jacob Hirsh of U of T's Rotman School of Management said, "While religiousness is characterized by devotion to a specific tradition, set of principles, or code of conduct, spirituality is associated with the direct experience of self-transcendence and the feeling that we're all connected.

In three studies, the researchers Hirsh, Peterson and Megan Walberg, also from U of T's Department of Psychology, examined their participants' political views in relation to their religiousness and spirituality. In the first study, they asked 590 American participants whether they identified as Democrat or Republican. In the second study, they measured 703 participants' political orientations and support for the major American and Canadian political parties.

The researchers confirmed that religiousness was associated with political conservatism, while spirituality was associated with political liberalism. These associations were in turn due to the common values underlying these orientations: conservatism and religiousness both emphasize the importance of tradition, while liberalism and spirituality both emphasize the importance of equality and social harmony.

In the third study, the researchers recruited 317 participants from the U.S. and asked half to complete a spiritual exercise consisting of a guided meditation video. Those who watched the video were asked to close their eyes and breathe deeply, imagining themselves in a natural setting and feeling connected to the environment. They were then asked about their political orientation and to rate how spiritual they felt. The researchers reported that, compared to those in the control group, participants who meditated felt significantly higher levels of spirituality and expressed more liberal political attitudes, including a reduced support for "tough on crime" policies and a preference for liberal political candidates.

"Spiritual experiences seem to make people feel more of a connection with others," says Hirsh. "The boundaries we normally maintain between ourselves and the world tend to dissolve during spiritual experiences. These feelings of self-transcendence make it easier to recognize that we are all part of the same system, promoting an inclusive and egalitarian mindset."

The researchers hope that these findings can not only advance our understanding of spirituality, but also help future political dialogue.

Center for Spirituality to hold lecture series

Beginning next month, the Saint Marys Center for Spirituality (CFS) will bring three speakers to campus as part of the 2013 Spring Lecture Series, Mind, Body, Spirit: Connected.

CVS director Sr. Kathleen Dolphin, PBVM, Ph. D, said these lectures will illustrate the overall goal of the Center, reminding people how the body, mind and spirit of a person are connected and dependent on one another.

The mind and spirit are intimately connected and mutually enriching to each other in an academic setting, she said. Were in a unique position to engage the Saint Marys community in discussion of the critical issues related to spirituality that are facing students.

The lecture series, sponsored by the Colleges Annual Endowed Lecture Series Fund, kicks off March 5 when Margaret OBrien Steinfels will deliver a talk called Perspectives on the Catholic Intellectual Tradition. Steinfels is the former co-director of the Center for on Religion and Culture at Fordham University.

What we are trying to talk about in this first lecture is the Catholic intellectual tradition, which is very strong throughout history, Sr. Dolphin, PBVM, Ph. D said. Its an acknowledgement of the power of human intellect. Sr. Dolphin said the human mind is a crucial part of a developing spirituality.

Its an emphasis on the mind in that we must think about the issues of the world, and its concerns and the issues in the church, she said. We are constantly thinking about what role the church plays in these issues.

Sr. Dolphin said she admires Steinfels as both an author and a speaker. The two have a history together that came about long before their mutual interests in spirituality and the Catholic tradition.

I went to grade school with Margaret in Chicago, so Im very excited to hear see her speak and talk, she said. I highly respect her. However, Sr. Dolphin said she is also looking forward to the other two lectures in the series. The second speaker visiting campus is Suzette Bremault-Phillips, from the Department of Occupational Therapy at the University of Alberta in Canada.

Bremault-Phillips will speak March 26 in a talk called, Exploring the Body/Spirituality Interface. The talk, according to Sr. Dolphin will focus on the use of spiritual experiences in medicine.

She is exploring how the body and spirit get along with each other, Sr. Dolphin, PBVM, Ph. D said. She is studying the impact spirituality can have on someone who is ill. Shes done research on how people get better and recover if theyve had some sort of spiritual or religious experience.

SpaceX capsule hitch puts mission to space station in doubt

Friday's launch represents the second formal resupply flight that SpaceX has undertaken under a $1.6 billion contract with NASA to ferry goods to and from the International Space Station.

A US cargo mission to the International Space Station has been placed safely on orbit, and after several hours of trouble-shooting, engineers appear to have gotten on top of a problem that could have put the rest of the mission in doubt.

At 10:10 a.m., Eastern time, a Falcon 9 rocket and its Dragon cargo capsule launched from its pad at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

Built and operated by Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) in Hawthorne, Calif., the Falcon 9's launch appeared to go flawlessly a welcome sign after one of the first stage's nine motors shut down prematurely during the company's first commercial launch last October.

The rocket delivered Dragon to its proper orbit, as planned. But shortly after the Dragon capsule separated from the rocket's second stage Friday morning, mission controllers reported that the flight-control system had prevented three of the capsule's four thruster pods from activating. The thrusters allow controllers to adjust the capsule's orbit, maneuver at the space station, and slow and orient the capsule properly for reentry.

The problem appears to have been traced to a balky oxidizer valve or clogged line. Initially, only one pod was functional. The craft needs at least two to put it on a trajectory to reach the space station.

By late afternoon, Elon Musk, the company's founder and chief technology officer, said that all four pods were working and that controllers were preparing to raise Dragon's orbit as it heads for the space station.

Initially, plans called for a rendezvous Saturday morning at 6:30, Eastern time. Now, that has been postponed, although NASA and SpaceX officials say the capsule could reach the station Sunday.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. The private spaceflight company SpaceX says it has restored vital thrusters on its robotic Dragon space capsule in orbit, but the hours of last-minute scrambling to fix the problem mean the cargo ship must delay its arrival at the International Space Station.

SpaceX and NASA officials say a hardware glitch, which occurred after theDragon spacecraft's launchatop a Falcon 9 rocket early Friday (March 1), prevented the spacecraft from performing vital maneuvers to put it on course for the space station. The spacecraft is hauling nearly a ton of cargo and support equipment to the space station for NASA and was expected to arrive on Saturday. That delivery, however, is delayed for at least a day, and possibly longer, SpaceX officials said.

"It's a bit too early for timing," SpaceX's billionaire founder and CEO Elon Musk told reporters in a teleconference after the launch. "We're definitely not going to rush it."

The Falcon 9 rocket launched on time at 10:10 a.m. ET (1510 GMT) from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, but once the Dragon capsule separated from the booster, the problem arose.

The launch today is the second of 12 flights to the space station planned for Dragon. SpaceX was awarded a $1.6 billion contract with NASA to fund these trips. Orbital Science Corp., another private spaceflight organization, was contracted for nine supply trips to the station as well.

Dragon thrusters back online

Friday afternoon, Musk explained that after hours of troubleshooting, the four thruster pods are back online and the solar arrays are tracking, powering the capsule according to NASA officials.

"There's no leakage or anything like that," Musk said. "There's no debris or fluid or gas leakage that we're aware of. All systems seem to be intact and functioning quite well that we're aware of."
