It's taken months to finish. "Incredible and the views are just spectacular."
Beginning Saturday folks will be able to strap in, hook up and take a ride on the Hummingbird Zipline that runs through part of Gulf State Park says co-owner Tom Schlinkert "The zipline system is complete, all the towers are complete, we are currently training a group of our guides."
With seven towers that range from 48 to 90 feet tall, the adventure will take about two and a half hours to complete with training. "We feel like the skills that you learn and the experience you have here will be different than anything else the coast has had to offer at this point," says Schlinkert.
While the zipline might be the most anticipated attraction coming to Baldwin beaches this summer, it's not the only one.
Construction has begun for a couple of new attractions at one of the oldest attractions in Gulf Shores, Waterville. "We're working as hard as we can," says general manager John Turberville. "We're looking to open this ride to the public on May 18th. A six lane, mat racer one of the first of its kind on the gulf coast."
By midsummer, Alabama's ship will come in in the water that is, as the 271 foot Yokamu heads to the bottom of the gulf to become alabama's first shipwreck primarily for scuba divers. "We have to do a little more preparation. A little cleaning but basically everything is done."
They hope to sink the ship in late June.
Meanwhile, another event, the Hangout festival named it's third headliner for the music fest. Stevie Wonder will join Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Kings of Leon in drawing thousands to the beach in May.

Destruction of bluff, boardwalk raise safe access concerns at southern-most beaches

PHOTOS BY KENNY WALTER Public access points to six Long Branch beaches will be blocked off for the summer as a result of superstorm Sandy, but the beaches will have lifeguards on duty.
Mayor Adam Schneider said in a March 1 interview that all access points south of Cottage Place would likely remain closed this summer because of the destruction of the boardwalk and the supporting bluff, which beachgoers would have to scale to access the beaches.
The bluff has been severely compromised. We dont even have a place to put steps. We dont have something to anchor them to, Schneider said. Those beaches probably will not have direct access.
Our first job is to keep anybody who goes to the beach safe, and we are going to keep as many of the other access points open.
However, Schneider said the beaches are expected to remain open to members of the public, who will have to use access points to the north.
People are going to walk where they want to walk and it is not the lifeguards job to say, Dont sit there, sit here, he said. They are too busy watching the ocean and we dont have enough cops, nor do we want them chasing people off.
Here is our concern: It is not just getting you down to the beach, its being able to protect you and keep you safe while youre there, he added. What if something happens can we get a rescue vehicle to you, can we get you off the beach?

Summer has not officially arrived yet but the Philippines, its white-sand beaches and hidden lagoons are already getting much attention from international travel guides.
TripAdvisor, one of the worlds popular online travel guides, placed the island of Boracay at No. 1 in its Travelers Choice-Best Beaches in Asia for this year.
In placing Boracays White Beach at the top of the list, besting 24 other beaches in Asia, TripAdvisor described the 7-kilometer stretch as a stunningly beautiful white powder sand beach [with] crystal clear, warm water that you can laze on for days on end.
Also making it to the list of great beaches in Asia were El Nido, Palawans Secret Lagoon, which was placed at No. 9 and Boracays Yapak Beach, also known as Puka Shell Beach, at No. 10.
The scenic Secret Lagoon, located on a small island and nestled among towering limestone formations, was cited for its wonderful view.
Yapak Beach, a secluded area in the north of Boracay Island, was noted for the myriad of puka shells on the shore giving ones feet a rugged feel.
On its website, TripAdvisor said the Travelers Choice Beaches Awards were based on the quality and quantity of traveler reviews and ratings for beaches it has gathered over a 12-month period since the 2012 awards.

Paper timelines fan out across the floor, filled with pictures of the universe and human culture. Theyre all supposed to show moments between the Big Bang and now in chronological order, but all of them vary.
Around these pieces of paper stand groups of Tibetan monks debating and defending the timelines theyve arranged. To an outsider who doesnt speak Tibetan, the energy in the room would be overwhelming. The monks are shouting and shoving, but if you look closely, you can see the smiles on their faces and hear the laughter amidst the arguing.
Chris Impey, UA astronomy professor and deputy head of the department of astronomy, had set aside a half hour for this timeline building exercise. But an hour and a half later, lunch time had come and gone, and the monks were still debating.
For a teacher, the mother lode is just when you can be irrelevant, Impey said. When you can set up a learning and teaching situation, and then you dont need to be there, it all just happens.
This is one exercise Impey used in January while with the Science for Monks program in India. The program gives Western educators the chance to teach science workshops in the Tibetan monastic community in India.
I came in with a clean slate, but I learned a lot, Impey said. It changed me because they view the world differently, and its an interesting way to be.
Impey has taught cosmology with the program every year since 2008. Through a grant from the John Templeton Foundation, he is in the process of publishing a book that details his experiences called Humble Before The Void: Teaching Cosmology to Buddhist Monks.
Impey says he hopes readers take away a real sense of who the monks are. Most of them have been exiled and living like orphans for most of their lives. Despite that, theyre lighthearted and fun. Theres a lot of laughing in the classroom, he said.
We had a lot of outbursts of laughter and jokes, said Tenzin Sonam, an education graduate student who accompanied Impey as a translator.

This presentation is part of the 13th Annual Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series. Why would NASA buy a used passenger airliner, cut a 10-foot-by-10-foot hole in the fuselage, add a roll-back door and install a 17-ton telescope inside? In his lecture, open to the public, Backman will introduce you to the engineering marvel and international scientific facility called SOFIA -- the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy. This remarkable airborne telescope began scientific research flights in 2010 and is already returning exciting discoveries about the birth of stars, interstellar chemistry, the atmospheres of giant planets, the environment around supermassive black holes and other branches of astronomy. Backman is the director of Education and Public Outreach for the SOFIA project at NASA Ames and an adjunct professor at Santa Clara University and the Stanford Continuing Studies Program.
Before joining the SOFIA team, he was professor of physics and astronomy at Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania. He is coauthor of three college-level astronomy textbooks and a frequent public speaker on astronomy and SOFIA. His research specialty is infrared astronomy (the study of the universe by collecting heat rays), exactly the kind of work that the SOFIA telescope is designed to do.

Astronauts invaded Florida's capitol building today.
It's all part of the annual Space Day. Both NASA and private space officials and lobbyists stopped by to promoted and advocate for programs in the state.
Despite NASA retiring the space shuttle program, billions of dollars are still brought into the state through space and tech jobs. However, Florida has to battle other states with space programs like Texas, California and even New Mexico.
"There's a lot of competition with the state of Florida now," said Space Day chair Don White. "We want to make sure that [just because the] Shuttle has retired but the space industry is very important to us and in some ways it will be better that we're diversified."

Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group today (5 March) announced the acquisition of 100% of the share capital of FlairJet Ltd, the London Oxford Airport-based aircraft management and charter company. Effective immediately, FlairJet will become part of the Groups newly formed Aviation Services business unit and will continue to be led by Managing Director and founder, David Fletcher, who now has the backing of one of Europes largest privately owned Aerospace and Defence Groups.
Newly acquired FlairJet, which recently marked its third anniversary, will run alongside Cambridge Airport based operator Marshall Executive Aviation (MEA).
