Homeland Resources HMLA Confirms Numerous Oil and Gas Prospects at Liberty Ridge

ALBUQUERQUE, NM--(Marketwire - Mar 5, 2013) - Homeland Resources Ltd. ( OTCQB : HMLA ) ("Homeland" or the "Company"), an emerging oil and gas exploration and production company, announced that it has confirmed and secured an interest in 34 initial prospects at its Liberty Ridge Drilling Project located in south-central Oklahoma.

"A large-scale project like this holds great potential for Homeland insofar as it involves all phases of oil and gas exploration, including 3D seismic data evaluation, prospect generation, leasing, permitting, and ultimately drilling," stated Armando Garcia, President of Homeland Resources. "Once the drilling gets started at Liberty Ridge it will be significant development for the Company. Moreover, based on production results from the surrounding oil fields, we are optimistic that analogous discovers will be made in the Liberty Ridge Project area."

The overall scale of the Liberty Ridge Project is large (approximately 83,043 acres or 130 square miles) and there is long a history of significant oil and gas production across the region. The strategic purpose of the 3D seismic program was to locate numerous new oil fields across the entire land position and fully exploit the proprietary data to develop new discoveries.

The geological and geophysical evaluation of the 3D seismic data has allowed Homeland and its partners to identify and subsequently secure 34 initial prospects at the Liberty Ridge Project. At present, each prospect represents a future potential drill site. After a period of evaluation, each successful and economically viable well could potentially warrant one or more additional development wells to fully exploit the prospect.

The Company entered into Liberty Ridge Project based on numerous factors. These include, but are not limited to: (1) the positive results of previous 2-D seismic work, (2) the overwhelming success of analogous and neighboring fields in the immediate area which have produced over 13,000,000 barrels of oil within approximately 785 acres, and (3) a total of fourteen historically identified pay zones offer potential for commercially productive reservoirs within the project area.

"It should be noted that the lease acquisition process at Liberty Ridge continues, and it is expected that additional prospects could be added to the portfolio as new land lease agreements are secured," continued Garcia."In light of this, Homeland and its partners could potentially be drilling new oil and gas wells at Liberty Ridge through 2013 and 2014."

Liberty Tax Service Can Now File All 2012 Tax Returns

Liberty Tax Service is now filing all remaining individual and business 2012 federal income tax returns.

Virginia Beach, VA (PRWEB) March 05, 2013

The American Taxpayer Relief Act, enacted by Congress in January, created the need for critical adjustments to the IRS systems. In order to accommodate Congress last-minute maneuver, the IRS had to accept 2012 returns in stages as it updated various forms and instructions. The first stage and the largest group could file at the end of January. The second stage could file in the middle of February, leaving the remaining taxpayers left to wait. For those claiming residential energy credits and other business tax credits and deductions, the wait is now over.

The IRS is still advising taxpayers that the best way to file an accurate return is to e-file. If taxpayers need more time to finish their returns, Liberty Tax can easily get a six-month tax-filing extension by filing Form 4868 for them, says Martha OGorman, Chief Marketing Officer for Liberty Tax Service.

About Liberty Tax

Founded in 1997 by CEO John T. Hewitt, Liberty Tax Service is the fastest-growing tax preparation franchise ever. Liberty Tax Service has prepared over 10 million individual income tax returns to date. Liberty Tax Service and its nationwide network of over 30,000 tax preparers are ready to offer their assistance at any time.

Currently there are approximately 27,000 fewer total franchise establishments operating in the United States than there were in 2008. (774,016 in 2008 compared to 746,828 in 2012). In spite of this downward trend, Liberty Tax Service increased its number of locations from 2,695 in 2008 to 4,183 in 2012.

Liberty Tax Service stands behind community enrichment efforts by sponsoring various non-profit organizations and urging their employees and franchisees to give back to their communities. Virgin Media to Embrace Online Rivals After Takeover by Liberty

Virgin Media Inc. (VMED), the U.K. cable-TV provider being bought by Liberty Global Inc. (LBTYA), plans to make Web services such as Netflix a more integral part of its offering rather than fighting them, its chief executive officer said.

Our approach is to get every content asset you possibly can on the platform, CEO Neil Berkett said yesterday in an interview at the Cable Congress in London.

Liberty Global, the cable giant controlled by billionaire John Malone, is buying Virgin Media for $16 billion to expand in Europes biggest pay-TV market. Berkett is overseeing the merger while competing against larger rival British Sky Broadcasting Group Plc (BSY) as well as streaming services offered by Netflix Inc. (NFLX) and Amazon.coms Lovefilm.

Cable operators have an advantage as their relationship with content providers is highly complementary, he said. Still, streaming services have the potential to dilute offerings by the cable companies that dont work with them, he said.

Weve got a far greater chance as an industry by embracing over-the-top services, Berkett said. Its unlikely that youll see a U-turn and digression in terms of our strategy under Liberty Global.

Liberty Global CEO Mike Fries said yesterday at the conference that he expected Virgin Media to continue to use the TiVo Inc. (TIVO) set-top box in the coming years, though was unsure what would happen beyond that. Liberty Global has been introducing the competing Horizon box in Europe, starting in the Netherlands.

TiVo CEO Tom Rogers said in an interview today his company has a long time on the contract with Virgin Media.

Its really expensive to make a technology change of the sort we represent once its weaved into the heart of the software, he said at the Cable Congress today. We will continue to work with Virgin and look forward to working with Liberty Global.

About 1.3 million Virgin Media customers currently have the TiVo box, Berkett said yesterday, and the company is continuing to offer it.

TiVo is also in talks with a number of operators in Europe about adding its set-top box and software, Rogers said. There is room to grow with about 400 million subscribers in regions including western Europe and the U.S. that will decide whether to take on advanced TV services in future, he added.

Liberty ’s Kitchen: Jackson Bound?

Syrena Johnson never thought anyone evaluating scholarship applicants would even give her a second look. That all changed in the summer of 2011, though, when the New Orleans native received the first-ever Chefs Move! Culinary Scholarship.

The scholarship paid for room and board, a laptop and 13 months at the French Culinary Institute in New York City, where Johnson learned from some of the greatest chefs in the world, including John Besh.

"It sounded too good to be true," Johnson told a crowd at Underground 119 March 3.

Johnson, 22, owes the scholarship to the people at Liberty's Kitchen, she said, and she's paying every bit of it back. A non-profit organization, Liberty's Kitchen takes in at-risk youth in New Orleans, and puts them through a 12-to-15-week program that teaches them life skills and the ins and outs of running a restaurant. It also provides employment assistance after they graduate.

The educational process includes running a cafe, providing fresh, from-scratch lunches to 1,000 public-school children five days a week, catering events and in-class instruction. If participants haven't already earned a high-school diploma, the program provides tutoring to help them earn a GED.

In 2010, Johnson was one of those young people. She entered the Liberty's Kitchen Youth Development Program with some kitchen experience, and competed the program in just seven weeks. After graduation, Liberty's Kitchen hired Johnson to work on the school-lunch program. She was working there when Liberty's Kitchen directors pushed her to apply for the Chefs Move! Scholarship.

"I was just like, 'Nah--I couldn't possibly win that," Johnson said. "Everybody from Liberty's Kitchen was like, 'Come, Syrena, you really have to do this. You have a chance."

Johnson applied. She didn't really believe she had a chance until she made it to the second round of the selection process. One round and an interview with Besh later, Johnson had a scholarship to one of the best culinary schools in the country.

Now Johnson is back at Liberty's Kitchen as an instructor, providing the same education she received to other New Orleans' young people.

Though she is a success story of Liberty's Kitchen, she certainly isn't the only one. Liberty's Kitchen started in July 2009 with just two students. Since then, the school has served 200 students out of an applicant pool of more than 800.

LIBERTY, Va., March 5 (UPI) -- Liberty University in Virginia, founded in 1971 by Jerry Falwell as Lynchburg Baptist College, has become the largest private university in the country.

The university now has more than 74,000 students, almost 62,000 of them studying on line, The Washington Post reports. At the end of 2012, Liberty reported more than $1 billion in net assets, 10 times the amount in 2006.

Liberty grew fast under Falwell, the pastor of the Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg and one of the country's leading conservative evangelical leaders. But its growth has been explosive since his death in 2007.

Only 47 percent of its students get degrees within six years of enrolling, the Post said. The national average is 58 percent.

Jerry Falwell Jr., who now serves as chancellor and president, said the school strives to provide opportunity for people seeking college degrees.

"We believe that Liberty will redefine what is considered an academically prestigious university in the future," he said.

Liberty's loan default rate is below average, suggesting it has avoided piling its students with loads of debt.

Qatar ruler takes title to 6 Greek islands

Published: March. 6, 2013 at 12:42 AM

VATHY, Greece, March 6 (UPI) -- The emir of Qatar, one of the world's richest men, has taken title to six uninhabited Greek islands after a year and a half of paperwork.

Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani paid $11 million for the islands in the Echinades chain, The Guardian reported. They are politically part of Ithaca, the island in the Ionian Sea that was home to the Homeric hero Odysseus.

The sheik plans to create vacation retreats for his family, which includes three wives and 24 children. Ioannis Kassianos, who became mayor of Ithaca three years ago after a career as an economics professor in the United States, said the sheik plans to buy the entire Echinades chain of 20 islands, all of them uninhabited. Dennis Grivas, owner of the smaller five islands, negotiated a price last week.

"The islands have been in my family for over 150 years but we are not rich enough to be able to keep such valuable properties any longer," Grivas said. "We are very, very happy to see them go. They have been on the market for nearly 40 years."

Kassianos said the sale involved 18 months of red tape.

"Greece is that kind of place," he said. "Even when you buy an island, even if you are the emir of Qatar, it takes a year and a half for all the paperwork to go through."

Kassianos said the sheik now has to find a workaround for a Greek law limiting the size of private homes.

How did those wolves get to the Falkland Islands ? Scientists may have an answer.

Australian scientists believe that they now understand how a reddish, dog-sized carnivore could have wound up on the Falkland Islands, 285 miles from the nearest mainland, some 16,000 years ago.

The mystery surrounding the origin of a wolflike predator that once lived near Antarctica a puzzle that stumped even Charles Darwin has now been solved, researchers say.

Theextinct carnivoreapparently made its way to islands hundreds of miles from the nearest continent by crossing the frozen sea thousands of years ago, scientists explained.

The reddish coyote-sized Falkland Islands wolf was the only mammal native to theFalkland Islandsfar off the east coast of Argentina. The foxlike predator lived on seals, penguins and sea birds until hunters exterminated it in 1876.

The existence of the Falklands wolf perplexed Darwin when he first encountered it in 1834. "How did this great big carnivore arrive to a set of islands 460 kilometers (285 miles) from the nearest mainland when no other terrestrial mammal did?" asked researcher Alan Cooper, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Adelaide in Australia. "If it came by a land bridge, then the islands should've been covered with rodents as well, since South America is rodent central."

"It was incredibly tame it swam out to meet sailors, wagging its tail," Cooper told LiveScience. "That led to suggestions that it was a semi-domesticated dog that Native Americans took out while hunting, explaining how it got to the Falklands when there were no other mammals there." [Gallery: Photos Reveal Amazing Wolves]

However, past analysis ofDNA from museum specimensof the Falklands wolf, including one that Darwin collected, revealed it was not a dog after all. Instead, its nearest living ancestor was the maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) from the South American savannas, an odd predator resembling a red fox with almost stiltlike legs.

To help solve the mystery of how the Falklands wolf colonized the islands, Cooper and his colleagues compared its DNA with remains of what seemed like its closest extinct mainland relative,Dusicyon avus. This carnivore is similar to the Falklands wolf, save for smaller teeth and jaws.

Solomon Islands serious about green economy transition

Solomon Islands serious about green economy transition

Honiara, Solomon Islands, 7 March 2013 - Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo is convinced that vital economic sectors in Solomon Islands should move to a green economy approach.

Following the first Roundtable on Development, Society and Environment PM Lilo believes all stakeholders will create innovative partnerships and ownership of programs and projects.

This dialogue has enabled us to focus on long term policies, strategies and programs and facilitate dialogues for stakeholders to monitor their application in Solomon Islands. PM Lilo said while closing the Roundtable on Wednesday afternoon in Honiara.

As a result of all our efforts, I am sure that we will see signs of sustainable development in all these sectors, PM Lilo added.

The three day discussions focused on developments in forestry, fisheries, education, tourism and the mineral resources sector.

PM Lilo accepted the recommendations made in the Roundtable discussions, including: Engaging more with stakeholders including communities other than the public and private sectors;

1. Weak or absence of sound policies, legislation and regulations; 2. The need for enforcement of policies, legislation and regulations; 3. More consultation with landowning groups for easy identification of land and agreement on land usage; 4. The importance of a better understanding of the investment issues in certain locations of major projects, to create conducive investment climates; 5. Greater coordination when designing, implementing and monitoring national projects.

The Roundtable expressed that the country has to shift to a Green Economy model. The Green Economy model abides by at least four principles: (i) maintains and enhances human relationships, (ii) lifts the community and the individual, (iii) is based on equity and fairness, and (iv) enhances the integrity of ecosystems and life-support systems.

The Roundtable also agreed to establish a Green Economy Platform that will take the lead in guiding this process of transition.

DNA helps explain Falkland Islands wolves

Published: March. 5, 2013 at 3:14 PM

ADELAIDE, Australia, March 5 (UPI) -- Australian researchers say DNA has helped understand the history of the now-extinct Falkland Islands wolf, the only land-based mammal on the isolated islands.

Previous theories have suggested the wolf somehow rafted on ice or vegetation, or crossed via a now-submerged land bridge or was even semi-domesticated and transported by early South American humans to the Falklands, 285 miles from the nearest land, Argentina.

Researchers from the University's Australian Center for Ancient DNA extracted tiny pieces of tissue from the skull of a specimen collected by Charles Darwin when he encountered the famously tame species in 1834.

Their findings suggested that the Falkland Islands wolf became isolated from its South American mainland relatives only about 16,000 years ago, around the peak of the last glacial period.

The absence of other mammals on the Falklands argued against any land bridge connection to the mainland, researches said.

"The Eureka moment was finding evidence of submarine terraces off the coast of Argentina," study leader Alan Cooper said. "They recorded the dramatically lowered sea levels during the Last Glacial Maximum [around 25,000-18,000 years ago]."

"At that time, there was a shallow and narrow [around 12 miles] strait between the islands and the mainland, allowing the Falkland Islands wolf to cross when the sea was frozen over, probably while pursuing marine prey like seals or penguins. Other small mammals like rats weren't able to cross the ice."
