OUR VIEW: A new attack on academic freedom (poll)

Academic freedom is essential to intellectual progress, free thought and freedom itself. If society doesnt aggressively defend academic freedom, people are not free to discover truths about cultures, religions and scientific findings. They are not free to study theories of evolution, creation, or to discover that our planet is round.

The concept of tolerance has become a cleverly disguised, anti-intellectual threat to academic freedom. To advocate tolerance as a high moral principle in academe, one indulges intolerance and prohibition of free learning. Thats because genuine tolerance requires that we tolerate intolerance, or at least access to knowledge of intolerance.

One cannot genuinely advocate tolerance if he refuses to learn about or acknowledge radical Muslim communities on a basis of their common beliefs that women should be hidden away and forced to wear burqas. True tolerance requires that we tolerate people with beliefs we consider odd, politically incorrect, or even cruel. One cannot honestly advocate tolerance by renouncing a college professor for professing the merits of abortion, or for advocating prohibition of abortion.

Those who advocate tolerance, while denouncing others on a basis of their perceived intolerance, are not tolerant. They tolerate only themselves. These enemies of truth take their intolerance to an absurd level by suggesting others should not even learn about that which offends them.

In academe, we must value only tolerance of the freedom to exchange ideas, beliefs and accepted truths.

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation claims to advocate tolerance, yet appears intolerant of Jewish teachings when the organizations leadership finds them objectionable. It is fine to object to cultural and religious practices and values. The Gazette objects to the cultural practices of extreme fundamentalist Muslims who justify sexist mistreatment of women with interpretations of the Quran. Though we object, we would never advocate preventing radical fundamentalists from professing their views, much less suggest shielding students websites that teach about them.

We object to the Ku Klux Klan but defend their right to profess radical hatred. Furthermore, we encourage students at universities to learn all they can about people from all cultures and religions of the world. College must prepare them for the real world, not a pretend version concocted by the radically sensitive.

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation wants to publicly shame the Air Force Academy because it did not act quickly enough after the organization demanded removal of a link in an online memo that led students to multiple websites that teach about religions. One link directed students to the website Judaism 101 at http://www.jewfaq.org.

To demonize the academy, the organization rented a billboard on Garden of the Gods Road this week that says Shame on the USAFA and Homosexuality is not kleptomania. The website does not compare homosexuality to kleptomania. It argues that homosexual activity is not excused, in the authors understanding of Judaism, even if it is rooted in genetics. It uses an obviously undesirable activity stealing to show that society cannot accept all behaviors on a basis of proving genetic cause. Thats quite different from saying that homosexual activity is the same as shoplifting, but dont expect foes of academic freedom to appreciate the nuance of an analogy that is obviously and intentionally disproportionate for the sake of explaining a point.

Foundation leader Mikey Weinstein characterized the websites contents as perniciously hateful... bigoted and virulently homophobic.

UFC Champ Ronda Rousey Blasts Cris Cyborg : ‘She Almost Destroyed Women’s MMA’

Although Ronda Rousey has solidified herself as a UFC champion and a legitimate pay-per-view draw, questions about a superfight with Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos still linger.

But while a superfight between the two once seemed within the UFC's power to orchestrate, Cyborg is now a non-issue in her foe's career.

Most recently, UFC president Dana White summed up Cyborg as "irrelevant"(via MMA Weekly), stressing that his company was done dealing with the Brazilian.

Unsurprisingly, Rousey echoed similar sentiments in an interview with Sportsnet anchor Joe Ferraro during a recent media run. As the champion stated, Cyborg doesn't deserve special treatment when it's "obvious" that she can lose some muscle weight:

[Cyborg is] obviously not willing to go through the effort to go for the fight. Here's what it is.If you're pumped full of steroids and the lightest you can get it 145, then it's obvious the lightest you can get without steroids is lighter.

She refuses to do that and it's justI really don't know where this sense of entitlement comes from. She hasn't had a recorded win in over three years. I mean, there's so many other women. Look at Sara McMann. She's undefeated, a silver [Olympics] medalist wrestler...people like that are the people we should be looking forward to fighting.

Cyborg's weight issues and positive test for anabolic steroidsin January 2012 have been consistent talking points for Rousey during the last couple of years. With the UFC just recently adopting a 135-pound women's division, the scrutiny has only increased.

As the champion has noted, Cyborg's supposed inability to drop weight hints at years of doping, with Rousey tellingInside MMAthat Cyborg was "cheating for her entire career."

Hence, the UFC's first women's champion would only accept a superfight with Cyborg at the 135-pound bantamweight limit, with the UFC even preparing to enlist famed MMA nutritionist Mike Dolce to help the Brazilian shed her extra body weight.

But with no catchweight bout in sight and no women's featherweight division to accommodate Cyborg, she instead left the UFC under the advice of her new coach, retired UFC champion Tito Ortiz. However, Rousey states that Cyborg was owed nothing and deserved less:

Thousands of sharks shut Florida beaches

Beaches along the south Florida coast were closed temporarily after thousands of migrating sharks were spotted close to the shore.

Swimmers were ordered out of the water after the sharks - mostly blacktips and spinners - moved into the area as they head north during their annual migration.

The beaches reopened on Thursday, though unseasonably chilly temperatures kept most swimmers away anyway.

Craig Pollock, a lifeguard supervisor in Palm Beach, said: 'We don't have a sandbar. A lot of times when we have a sandbar the sharks stay off of the shore a little further.

'Every year we expect annual shark migration to come through this area.'

Researchers at Florida Atlantic University counted 15,000 sharks - many as close as 200 yards from the shoreline.

Video footage showed dozens of the predators swimming through breakers along the coast line.

Beaches in Boca Raton, Boynton Beach and Singer Island were closed, with double red flags warning swimmers to keep out of the water.

Beachgoer Elizabeth Horowitz said: 'Sharks are not to be reckoned with.'

Three men drown at Vic beaches

Three men have drowned off Victoria's beaches, including a father who's believed had been trying to rescue his son from a rip.

Paramedics were first called to a beach at Lorne, on the Great Ocean Road, about 12.30pm (AEDT) on Saturday, where surf lifesavers had pulled a 12-year-old boy and an unconscious man in his fifties from the water.

CPR was performed on the man for some time, but he could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene, Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said.

The boy, believed to be the man's son, was taken to hospital in a stable condition, having swallowed water and suffered shock, Mr Mullen said.

At 2.30pm, an ambulance helicopter arrived at a beach in Rye, on the Mornington Peninsula, to treat an unconscious man who had been in the water.

Bystanders had performed CPR and paramedics took over upon arrival, but couldn't revive him and he died at the scene, Ambulance Victoria's Ray Rowe said.

The beach at St George River, southwest of Lorne's main beach, is not patrolled and features a permanent rip flowing out its narrow entrance, according to Life Saving Victoria (LSV).

LSV spokeswoman Jennifer Roberts said 57 beaches were patrolled across the state on Saturday.

She urged people to check signs and survey the risks at any beach before getting in the water, and never to swim alone.

'Every drowning death is a tragic occurrence,' Ms Roberts said.

State of the Plant-Based Nutrition Category 2013

BURNABY, British Columbia, March 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- According to industry research, plant-based nutritional products are one of the fastest growing categories in the natural health industry. Plant-based products are gaining major retail deals, media coverage, and a growing following of celebrities and professional athletes adopting a plant-based lifestyle.

"We've seen tremendous development since Vega launched back in 2004. We are thrilled to see such growth in the natural health product industry, particularly inthe plant-based nutrition category. Our primary goal has always been to bring products to market that simplify people's lives. We believe that accessible plant-based foods are the future of optimal health," said Brendan Brazier, plant-based category innovator and formulator of the award-winning Vega plant-based nutrition brand.

For many people, eating fruits and vegetables is typically the first lesson learned about healthy eating. Yet the demands of our on-the-go lives make it a struggle to eat the way we would like. When properly produced, plant-based nutritional products showcase strong nutritional profiles including antioxidants, essential vitamins and minerals, enzymes, fiber, protein, probiotics and phytonutrients that are highly nourishing. Innovative plant-based products, like Vega's, have made it possible to maintain healthful resolutions in a way that fits active, busy lives.

"We wholeheartedly believe that plant-based products not only help people realize the health benefits associated with clean nutrition, but also deliver significant social, economic and environmental returns. If we want more people to embrace plant-based nutrition, we need to be both inspiring and accessible. Mainstream acceptance won't come by delivering products that combine taste and clean nutrition alone it also depends on educating consumers on real-world ways to eat and feel better," says Brazier, as he provided insights as part of his State of the Plant-Based Nutrition Category 2013 address heading into the annual Expo West tradeshow.

Ten years ago when the first Vega product was developed, there was a common perception in the industry that plant-based nutrition was not a viable option for mainstream consumers. Many believed that is was impossible to put whole food ingredients into a commercial shake. Some assumed plant-based nutrition products would have too short a shelf life, poor taste and texture, and too high a cost resulting in low demand. Yet, heading into Expo West, the number of new entrants into the plant-based category is skyrocketing.

"We're excited to see new companies and products in our space because we believe that competition drives innovation. In my opinion, we operate within a shared ecosystem. Through a collective commitment to ongoing learning and innovation, the category will continue to elevate the status of clean nutrition and help deliver a larger variety of products for those turning to plant-based foods."

Education, transparency and a long-term commitment to sustainability are key pillars for future growth.

"From every ingredient we choose, how we select manufacturing partners and packaging design to how we set up our workspaces, sustainability must continue to be a core category value," says Brazier, who added that Vega continues to aggressively explore fully sustainable packaging.

As more consumers ranging from strict vegans, to part-time vegetarians, or celebrities, busy Moms, and professional athletes - incorporate better, clean, nutrient-rich options into their on-the-go lives, the future of plant-based nutrition looks bright.

"This year provides an important opportunity to build momentum and reach more people with the message of clean plant-based nutrition. Our commitment to education and setting the standard in the natural health industry will be essential to build sustained, long-term growth."

UNMC Develops Library for Researchers of Staph Infections

Newswise Through the creation of a library of more than 2,000 mutant strains of the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, the University of Nebraska Medical Center has provided an important tool for scientists around the world seeking answers for how to better deal with staph infections.

The project detailed in the Feb. 12 issue of mBio, the journal of the American Society for Microbiology was spearheaded by Paul Fey, Ph.D., first author, and Ken Bayles, Ph.D., senior author.

Dr. Fey is professor, pathology and microbiology, and medical director of clinical microbiology. Dr. Bayles is associate vice chancellor for basic science research and director of the UNMC Center for Staphylococcal Research.

Developed over the past four years, the library of mutant staph bacteria is essential in allowing scientists to better understand how staph genes cause infections. It also is critical in helping pharmaceutical companies develop new drugs to combat staph infections.

The mutant strains have been deposited in the Network on Antimicrobial Resistant Staphlococcus Aureus (NARSA), a repository funded by the National Institutes of Health. There is no cost for scientists to acquire these mutant strains.

NARSA has already provided nearly 2,600 mutant strains to scientists from 85 different laboratories and 12 countries. The entire library has been sent to 20 different labs around the world including labs in Germany, Switzerland, China, Ireland and England.

Based on the high usage, its clearly making a difference to the scientific community, Dr. Fey said. This was a significant undertaking, so its rewarding to see that other investigators appreciate what we have done.

Dr. Fey said it often takes several months for scientists to develop a single mutant strain. Having access to the library of mutant strains saves them a lot of time and work, and it allows for rapid hypothesis generation for their research, he said.

To complement the library of mutant strains, Jeffrey Bose, Ph.D., a fellow in pathology and microbiology, created a variety of genetic tools to help investigators better utilize the library. His work will be featured next month in Applied and Environmental Microbiology.

Dr. Fey also cited Robert Boissy, Ph.D., internal medicine administration, for providing his biomedical informatics expertise in the analysis of the genetic data. Three research techs Jennifer Endres, Vijaya Kumar Yajjala and Todd Widhelm also were involved on the project.

American Academy of Microbiology releases resistance report

Public release date: 7-Mar-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Contact: Garth Hogan ghogan@asmusa.org 202-942-9389 American Society for Microbiology

What do cancer cells, weeds, and pathogens have in common? They all evolve resistance to the treatments that are supposed to eliminate them. However, researchers developing the next generation of antibiotics, herbicides, and anti-cancer therapeutics rarely come together to explore the common evolutionary principles at work across their different biological systems. The new American Academy of Microbiology report "Moving Targets: Fighting Resistance in Infections, Pests, and Cancer" concludes that scientists working on different kinds of treatments have much to learn from each other. Applying lessons learned about the evolution of resistance in different biological systems during the earliest stages of drug and pesticide design could lead to more effective treatments for patients, farmers, and public health organizations.

Do you think the oncologists at a cutting-edge research hospital ever sit down with local farmers? Do you think the pharmaceutical researchers developing the next generation of anti-HIV drugs spend any time with the plant scientists working on the next generation of Roundup Ready soybeans? If your answer to both questions is no, you would be mostly right. Even though all of these people are dealing with exactly the same evolutionary phenomena, they do not recognize themselves as a single scientific community and rarely get a chance to learn from each other. What they all have in common is that they are trying to eliminate an unwanted living entity but the treatments they develop eventually lose effectiveness because the target evolves resistance.

The emergence of resistance is a phenomenon with ancient evolutionary roots, although the human role in triggering resistance was little appreciated before the advent of widespread antibiotic and pesticide use in the 1950s. In Silent Spring, the prescient Rachel Carson wrote in 1962 that "by their very nature chemical controls are self-defeating, for they have been devised and applied without taking into account the complex biological systems against which they have been blindly hurled." Sadly, in the fifty years since Silent Spring was published, biologists, doctors, and farmers continue to be plagued with resistance evolution by the species they seek to control. This phenomenon is witnessed in medicine in the emergence of antibiotic resistance and when tumors become intractable to standard anti-cancer medications, in agriculture when insecticides and herbicides lose effectiveness, and in public health when disease-carrying insects develop resistance to control strategies. The report "Moving Targets: Fighting Resistance in Infections, Pests, and Cancer" makes clear that a multi-disciplinary approach to the phenomenon of resistance can be very powerful.
