Disgraced pol Monserrate gets month of freedom to fix diseased teeth

It seems that Hiram Monserrates teeth are as rotten as his reputation.

The prison-bound ex-pol has won an extra month of freedom for desperately needed dental work on his diseased choppers, court papers reveal.

Monserrate who was sentenced to two years in the slammer for corruption went to his dentist in mid-January complaining of recent, severe pain, defense lawyer James Neuman wrote.

Tooth doc Louis Shapiro performed repeated root canal procedures, but Monserrate still needs four more crowns installed, according to the Manhattan federal court filing.

Dr. Shapiro opines that this treatment is necessary and must be done expeditiously in order to avoid additional damage, Neuman said.

Upon information and belief, it is very unlikely that this type of work would occur while Mr. Monserrate is in custody.

Judge Colleen McMahon gave Monserrate until April 11 to start serving his time behind bars.

The disgraced Democratic lawmaker from Queens pleaded guilty last year to scamming nearly $100,000 in slush funds while serving on the city council in 2006.

He was booted from the state Senate in 2009 after getting convicted of roughing up his girlfriend, Karla Giraldo, for which he was sentenced to probation.

What Freedom Means To Me

Jaiden Ackerson, Prairie Valley First Place

"A hero is someone who understands the responsibility that comes with his freedom." -Bob Dylan

To me freedom means living in a country where democracy matters, being able to have all races and religions peacefully live and work together, and being able to make personal choices while speaking my mind.

However, freedom does not give me the license to do anything I want, whenever I want. With freedom comes responsibility. Freedom allows me to make choices in my life, and those very choices come with consequences. These consequences may affect my life as well as the lives of others. When the consequences of my choices become negative, I may lose some of my freedom, including what activities I do throughout the day, what I wear and who I spend time with, or something as simple as losing the privilege of my cell phone.

Many people in America take freedom for granted. The view freedom as a right, but it is not. Soldiers ultimately pay the price for everyone's freedom. Without freedom we wouldn't be able to obtain an education, find the job of our choice, vote, have a family, or live our everyday lives. Freedom is a privilege we must honor.

Freedom allows all citizens to have the right to pursue an education of their choice, to work hard, and to succeed in their communities and lives. We, as free people, also have a responsibility to protect our communities and the people who live there. This freedom spreads beyond me and my community. This freedom is so important to me that I must preserve it for future generations. The greatest display of appreciation for my freedom is to become the best individual I can be. Because of the freedom to dream and turn the dreams to realities, I will become that individual.

All recovery programs are focused on building the skill essential to kick addiction out of the individual's life for good, including the most recent addiction to services offered is 24 hour nursing services.

Albion, MI (PRWEB) March 11, 2013

24-hour nursing service is especially essential for recovering addicts going through the detox process. Severe withdrawal symptoms can hit at any time, and when they do, patients need the immediate help of qualified staff members. By easing the physical pain associated with drug detox, Freedom Treatment Center enables patients to focus on the mental and emotional aspects of their addictions.

Constant access to high-quality care is universally recognized as a hallmark of a great drug treatment center. Research on the elements of a successfully recovery program confirms this. When patients try to detox from severe addictions on their own or without quick access to medical professionals, they almost always end up failing. Just as important is the availability of follow-up care, which Freedom Treatment Center is also able to provide. The National Institute on Drug Abuse insists that detox without follow-up care is not real treatment -- and the medical professionals at Freedom Treatment Center agree. By successfully getting patients through the difficult detox stage, they are simply setting them up to do the real work of addiction recovery.

Freedom Treatment Center representative Brian Kuehne explains that the importance of high-quality, 24 hour round-the-clock care cannot be overstated. Not only is such quality of care important to the patient, it can make a world of difference for that individual's loved ones. "The peace of mind our clients' families get knowing these services are now available makes it all worth it." With such peace of mind, families of admitted patients can finally rest assured knowing that their loved ones finally have a shot at beating the physical and mental horror that is addiction.

The Best Intelligence Is Cyborg Intelligence

. Automation only goes so far and for all Watson's Jeopardy wins, there are still many, many tasks on which computers are terrible and humans are effortlessly amazing. Like understanding language, say, or knowing what's happening in a photograph.

There is an analogy to be made to one of Google's other impressive projects: Google Translate. What looks like machine intelligence is actually only a recombination of human intelligence. Translate relies on massive bodies of text that have been translated into different languages by humans; it then is able to extract words and phrases that match up. The algorithms are not actually that complex, but they work because of the massive amounts of data (i.e. human intelligence) that go into the task on the front end.

Google Maps has executed a similar operation. Humans are coding every bit of the logic of the road onto a representation of the world so that computers can simply duplicate (infinitely, instantly) the judgments that a person already made.

The Times story is well worth reading for its catalog of similar operations at other companies like Twitter, Apple, IBM, and some startups. The point is not that machines are not powerful or that humans are irreplaceable in some fixed sense. The point is that the best services are cyborg: they arise from the combination of machine and human intelligences.

As Manfred Clynes and Nathan Kline, the co-coiners of the term "cyborg," wrote in 1960, "The purpose of the Cyborg, as well as his own homeostatic systems, is to provide an organizational system in which such robot-like problems are taken care of automatically and unconsciously, leaving man free to explore, to create, to think, and to feel."

Fifty-three years later, I think the jury is still out on whether or not his initial hope was correct.

Three men drown at Victorian beaches

Three men have drowned off Victoria's beaches, including a father who's believed had been trying to rescue his son from a rip.

Paramedics were first called to a beach at Lorne, on the Great Ocean Road, about 12.30pm (AEDT) on Saturday, where surf lifesavers had pulled a 12-year-old boy and an unconscious man in his fifties from the water.

CPR was performed on the man for some time, but he could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene, Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said.

The boy, believed to be the man's son, was taken to hospital in a stable condition, having swallowed water and suffered shock, Mr Mullen said.

At 2.30pm, an ambulance helicopter arrived at a beach in Rye, on the Mornington Peninsula, to treat an unconscious man who had been in the water.

Bystanders had performed CPR and paramedics took over upon arrival, but couldn't revive him and he died at the scene, Ambulance Victoria's Ray Rowe said.

The beach at St George River, southwest of Lorne's main beach, is not patrolled and features a permanent rip flowing out its narrow entrance, according to Life Saving Victoria (LSV).

LSV spokeswoman Jennifer Roberts said 57 beaches were patrolled across the state on Saturday.

She urged people to check signs and survey the risks at any beach before getting in the water, and never to swim alone.

'Every drowning death is a tragic occurrence,' Ms Roberts said.

High surf conditions to last through Monday at beaches in Palm Beach County, Treasure Coast

High surf will continue along beaches in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast through Monday, bringing with them rip currents and the threat of erosion, the National Weather Service said.

Large, lasting swells from the Northeast will keep entering offshore waters, the weather service said. These swells will generate dangerous breaking waves, potentially as high as 8 to 10 feet near area beaches, the service said.

The greatest impact along beaches are expected from this evening and into Monday. Beachgoers are urged not to venture far into the water, since the swells create rip currents powerful channels of water quickly flowing away from shore that can drag a person out to sea. The waves are also strong enough to knock beachgoers off structures such as jetties, the weather service said.

Along a stretch of beach near William O. Lockhart Municipal Pier in Lake Worth Sunday afternoon, the waves were so high that no one dared wade into the water. But dozens of people stood on the nearby boardwalk, snapping pictures with their camera phones and marveling at the swells on their way to and from early dinners at restaurants along Ocean Boulevard.

The weather service put the risk of erosion at area beaches at minimal to moderate.

Strong east winds are feeding the ocean conditions, averaging about 15 mph and gusting as high as 21 mph, the weather service said. The windy conditions are expected to strike area beaches throughout the week.

The forecast calls for daytime temperatures in the high 70s and overnight lows between 55 and 60 degrees for the week. Rain chances peak Tuesday at about 40 percent.

Unveiling East Bali’s beaches : Padangbai & Candidasa

Rumor has it that beaches that are far from South Bali are in better condition due to their minimal exposure to tourists. We decided to look at two locations in Balis east: Padangbai and Candidasa, to see how much of this is the truth.

Using a rental car or motorcycle that can be acquired for as low as Rp.150,000 (US$15.52) a day, the route to Padangbai is relatively easy along the main road, from Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai in Sanur to Jl. Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Mantra along the southern coast of Gianyar.

Around 20 minutes after Sanur, road signs for beaches appear: Saba Beach, Masceti Beach, Siyut Beach, and Telaga Besar Beach. All these beaches share similar characteristics: smooth black sand no further than 500 meters from the main road, making them a good place for a quick stop.

Padangbai Bias Tugal Beach

The road narrows at Goa Lawah Temple, which means the first stop - Padangbai - is near.

Around 10 minutes from Goa Lawah Temple, a right turn at an intersection leads to Padangbai harbor.

The lively harbor serves the busy Bali-Lombok route with ferries and fast boats.

Aside from the main beach, Padangbai also has two hidden beaches: the Blue Lagoon and Bias Tugal at either end of the main beach, separated by protruding cliffs.

Blue Lagoon is the more developed beach, with concrete stairs access and modern beach-side pavilions, while Bias Tugal is a short distance from the parking spot.
