Heparin is an anticoagulant and the prescription version is made from pig, raising concerns for vegans.
Go looking for animal products, and apparently you will find them everywhere.
That's the takeaway from the book Veganissimo A to Z, recently translated into English for the first time. What's veganissimo? It's veganism of the highest order, according to the German authors Reuben Proctor and Lars Thomsen, who call themselves "professional vegans." (Is veganism a healthful way to eat? Sorry, we're not going there in this post.)
Proctor and Thomsen, who've been vegan since 2000 and 1990, respectively, are willing to avoid animal products on ethical grounds at nearly all costs. And a perusal of their guide to more than 2,500 substances is enough to give even a non-vegan a bout of vicarious anxiety the byproducts of dead animals, it seems, are lurking in everything from diet supplements and medicine to sporting goods and electronics.
When it comes to pharmaceuticals, the authors say, there's a surprising amount of animal in many of those pills in your medicine cabinet. And that can present vegans with serious quandaries, pitting their health against their ideals.
"Medicine is one of the more difficult products for vegans to avoid, especially if something is life-threatening," Proctor tells Shots. "How far are you prepared to go for your own convictions?"
The most common animal derivative in the medicine cabinet is lactose, which is used as a carrier, stabilizer or to add bulk. And if you want to get technical about it (and Proctor's book certainly does), you'll learn that gelatin (derived from the skin and bone of cattle and pigs) shows up in many capsules, pills and tablets.
Your pills might also be bound with insect-based shellac or magnesium stearate, a substance based on fatty acids that can come from animals. And if pills have a pinkish or reddish tint, it could be from cochineal, or carmine, a red dye made from crushed insects. (Recall, if you will, that brouhaha over Starbucks' use of the dye to color its Strawberry and Crme Frappucinos.)
According to Proctor, vegans also have to worry about active ingredients in other drugs like insulin, anticoagulents like heparin, amino acid infusions, and hormone preparations.

Go natural... go herbal... go organic. This is now the battlecry of many people of different cultures; of different races; of different ages; of different lifestyle; and of different professions.
Simply, herbal products in its strict sense are those products that are prepared from plants without using additives, preservatives, artificial colors and flavors.
Herbal products can be classified into herbal medicine, personal care and herbal cosmetics and herbal foods.
Herbal medicine (sometimes referred to as herbalism or botanical medicine) is the use of herb plant or plant parts for the treatment or prevention of diseases, disorders and the promotion of good health.
Here are some interesting and revealing trivia about herbal medicine:-
Do you know that herbal medicine has a long and respected history? In fact, herbal medicine is the oldest form of health care known to mankind;
Do you know that many drugs commonly used today are of herbal origin;
Do you know that herbal healing has been passed from generation to generation by word of mouth? Although for the past many years, subjects on herbalism are now being offered in some educational institutions;
Do you know that to date, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 4 billion people (80% of world population) use herbal medicine in one form or another;
Do you know that there are over 750,000 plants on earth? It is saddening to note that to date very few of the healing herbs have been studied scientifically;

POMONA, CA--(Marketwire - Mar 15, 2013) - Western University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine will receive $8.4 million from First 5 LA to provide dental care to uninsured and underserved children.
The First 5 LA Commission approved the initial 19-month contract for $3.1 million with WesternU, part of a five-year, $38 million project in cooperation with UCLA and USC. The total awarded to WesternU through the full five-year implementation of the program is anticipated to be $8.4 million.
The program will emphasize getting children into the oral health care delivery system, or dental homes, by age 1, said Timothy Martinez, DMD, College of Dental Medicine Associate Dean for Community Partnerships and Access to Care.
College of Dental Medicine faculty and students will assess patients and provide dental care and preventative and educational services. The College will work with the San Gabriel Valley Foundation for Dental Health, WesternU's Patient Care Center, and the Center for Oral Health, which is now housed on WesternU's Pomona campus. It also plans to work collaboratively to establish four school-based dental oral health centers.
"We want to track the patients, make sure they're getting into dental care, make sure their treatment plans are being completed, and make sure they're put on preventative maintenance," Martinez said. "That's how you take care of a population and keep them healthy."
WesternU is working with school districts that have high Medicaid enrollment, and one goal is to create sustainability.
"We're trying to integrate oral health services with established school-based health centers, and we're going to develop processes to help support those programs," Martinez said. "The goal is to demonstrate how dentists can be successful providing services at these schools. We also have interprofessional training, teaching nurse practitioners and physician assistants about anticipatory guidance, which is how to prevent caries (cavities), talking to mothers, and how to apply fluoride varnish."
This program will introduce College of Dental Medicine students to caring for very young patients early in their education, which does not typically happen in dental schools, said College of Dental Medicine Dean Steven W. Friedrichsen, DDS.
"While providing essential dental services, the project will also help prepare the next generation of dentists to understand the importance of a dental home, a first dental visit by their first birthday, and early intervention and treatment for these children," he said.
First 5 LA is a unique child-advocacy organization created by California voters to invest tobacco tax revenues in programs aimed at improving the lives of children in Los Angeles County, from prenatal through age 5.

PHILADELPHIA, March 15, 2013 -- The number of U.S. senior medical students choosing categorical internal medicine residencies increased for the fourth consecutive year. According to the 2013 National Resident Matching Program, 3,135 U.S. medical school seniors matched for residency training in internal medicine, a 6.6 percent increase compared to 2012, when 2,941 matched in internal medicine.
The report also showed a continued increase of U.S. medical graduates who matched in Internal Medicine-Primary Care (200 in 2013, 186 in 2012, and 166 in 2011) and in Med-Peds (increased to 312 in 2013, up from 276 in 2012).
"We are pleased that more U.S. medical students are choosing internal medicine residencies and hope the upward trend continues," said Steven Weinberger, MD, FACP, executive vice president and CEO, American College of Physicians (ACP), the nation's largest medical specialty organization. "However, ACP remains concerned about the need to increase the nation's general internal medicine physician workforce to meet the needs of an aging population requiring care for chronic and complex illnesses and the increased number of individuals who will be receiving coverage through the Affordable Care Act."
The 2013 match for internal medicine is still well below the 3,884 U.S. medical school graduates that chose internal medicine residency programs in 1985.
Categorical internal medicine enrollment numbers decreased from 2007 to 2009 (2,680 in 2007; 2,660 in 2008; and 2,632 in 2009) before increasing in 2010 (2,772) and 2011 (2,940). The great majority of current internal medicine residents will ultimately enter a subspecialty of internal medicine, such as cardiology or gastroenterology. Only about 20 to 25 percent of internal medicine residents eventually choose to specialize in general internal medicine, compared with 54 percent in 1998.
Dr. Weinberger also cited problematic payment models and the exorbitant cost of medical education with the resulting financial burden on medical students and residents as barriers to a career in general internal medicine.

At the mercy of a computer algorithm used to determine residency placements, 161 University of Michigan Medical School students emotions and nerves were torqued to the maximum Friday as they waited for noon.
At noon, they were handed a white envelope.
Inside that envelope lay the answer for which the students had been waiting for months: The placement for their residency, where they would spend the next chapter of their lives as doctors.
Its practice nationally to announce residency appointments on "Match Day," at the same time on the same day.
At U-M, its made into a celebration of the students accomplishments over their time at the school. If they choose, the students can announce their placements on stage during the event.
Pins graduating U-M Medical School students placed on a map Friday showing where they were placed for their residency. One-third will stay in Michigan -- the majority of which will be at U-M.
Amy Biolchini | AnnArbor.com
Beaming and electrified with excitement, Andrea Knittel, 30, of Ferndale read off her placement in front of a crowd of her fellow graduates Friday afternoon at a conference room in Building 18 of the North Campus Research Complex.
It was her top choice: The University of California - San Francisco for a specialty in OB/GYN.
Knittel has been studying at U-M for 12 years. Starting as an undergraduate student, the top programs and experience kept her at U-M through her advanced studies, Knittel said.

Match Day 2013 for U-M medical school students: One-third will stay in Michigan
Almost 30 years ago, Trine Engebretsen made history and national headlines as Floridas first liver-transplant recipient. On Friday, Engebretsen added to her pioneering life story as she joined 32 other Florida International University students in the schools first graduating medical school class.
With graduation only a month away, Friday was Match Day, an annual ritual that takes place simultaneously in medical schools around the country.
Each school structures its event differently, but the common thread is this: Match Day is when graduating med school students are paired with the teaching hospitals where they will spend the next few years as residents. Students publicly read their match aloud by opening an envelope during a ceremony that combines graduation day euphoria with Academy Awards-type suspense.
For FIU where hundreds of students, family members, and administrators gathered in a balloon-decorated auditorium it was a test of whether the brand-new medical school would be well received by the greater healthcare community. With FIU achieving 100 percent graduate placement (often with students landing their first or second choice), that answer was a resounding yes. When announcing their match onstage, students frequently thrust their hands in the air in celebration.
Nationally, about 93 percent of medical students land a Match Day residency.
For Engebretsen, it was the story of a life come full circle. It was while at FIU that the 31-year-old woman from Fort Lauderdale discovered she not only wanted to pursue a career in medicine, but she wanted to be a surgeon one day she plans to perform the same liver transplant operation that saved her own life as a child.
Im able to pay it forward and give back in a new way, and I really like that, Engebretsen said. She is headed to Medical Center of Central Georgia.
Her husband, Ryan, received a liver transplant in 2008. The pair met while serving as mentors for a website that counsels families affected by liver disease.
Nineteen months ago, Engebretsen gave birth to a son, Andersen. It was a high-risk pregnancy, and its success was noteworthy enough that the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center held a news conference pronouncing him the first baby born to two liver transplant recipients.
FIUs 33 graduating students had a total of five babies while in med school, with a sixth on the way. Inexplicably, all the babies were boys another medical rarity. The chances of having six boys in a row are only about 1.5 percent, said J. Patrick OLeary, executive associate dean of clinical affairs for FIUs med school. But OLeary said it was the students strong academic performance as evidenced by their Match Day success that really stands out.

CONWAY, S.C. (AP) -- Liberty coach Dale Layer doesn't care how many losses it took to get his players to the NCAA tournament.
The Flames became just the second 20-loss team to reach college basketball's marquee event, beating Charleston Southern 87-76 Sunday to win the Big South Conference title. Liberty opened the season with eight straight losses and had never won more than three in a row until this week. Yet, it joined Coppin State in 2008 as the only schools with 20 or more defeats in the field of 68.
The Flames' .429 winning percentage (15-20) is the lowest for an NCAA tournament team since Oakland (Michigan) had a 12-18 record (.400) in 2005.
''That's awesome,'' the fourth-year coach said of his team. ''We've got the hats, right?''
Yes, you do, Coach.
The Flames finished their best stretch of basketball this year, winning their fifth in a row - and their fourth game since Tuesday - to take their first Big South tournament crown since 2004. John Caleb Sanders led the way with 27 points and tournament MVP Davon Marshall had 20 off six 3-pointers.
Marshall and Sanders got things going in a hurry over top-seeded Charleston Southern (19-12) with 3-pointers in the first 90 seconds - and the Flames barely lost their outside touch. Marshall was 6 of 7 from beyond the arc and Liberty finished 9 of 18 on long-range baskets.
The performance ended a hard-to-imagine run through the field where Liberty defeated home-standing Coastal Carolina and both Big South divisional winners in High Point and Charleston Southern. Sanders said the team began to believe when they topped the Chanticleers 78-61. ''When you can beat Coastal by 20 on their home floor, we knew we could beat anybody in this tournament,'' he said.
That played out over the week at the HTC Center with the improbable run.
''We've played four of our best games in these four games of the tournament,'' Sanders said. ''Talk about peaking at the exact right time.''

A North Korean propaganda website has warned of strikes against Southern islands and advised residents to leave.
The Uriminzokkiri website, linked to the regime, mentioned targets including Yeonpyeong island, which was attacked by Northern forces in 2010.
Pyongyang has made a series of threats since its last nuclear test in February prompted the UN to tighten sanctions.
The US said on Friday it would refocus missile defences to its west coast to counter the North's threats.
Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel said 14 more batteries would be placed in Alaska by 2017, adding to 30 already in place along the coast.
On 12 February the North tested a nuclear device, which is believed to be its third such test.
The UN Security Council condemned the move and tightened sanctions on the regime.
Before and after the UN announcement, Pyongyang promised reprisals for the sanctions, including a threat to launch a pre-emptive nuclear strike against the US.
North Korean media has also been vitriolic against the South.

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Trikona calls for Congressional hearings of the Cayman Islands tax shelter racket and the efforts of Cayman courts and Cayman judges to extend their control over US courts and US sovereignty. Trikona will call upon Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Speaker of the House John Boehner, and the Senate and House Committees on Foreign Relations to investigate Ugland House, Judge Jones, and the efforts of Cayman judges and Cayman courts to interfere in the US. Trikona will also call upon Secretary of State John Kerry and Connecticut Senator Christopher Murphy, who sits on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, for the same purpose. Maples & Calder is the law firm in Ugland House operating these tax scams. Its former head, Andrew Jones, is now a judge in the Cayman Islands, after retiring with a fortune from Maples & Calder and while living a good part of the year in New York City. Judge Jones, in order to protect the Cayman tax shelter racket, and the fortunes of other Caymanian lawyers making money off of it, is now trying to batter down US protections against extension of Cayman tax shelter rackets so as to interfere with US sovereignty and US courts.
Ugland House, is the infamous Cayman Island building where 18,000 companies are located. In a 2009 speech President Obama said about Ugland House that either this is the largest building in the world or the largest tax scam in the world. In 2008 a key US Senate tax panel called for a crackdown on the Cayman Islands tax shelter racket. Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., Chairman of Senate Finance Committee, said: Were going to find a way to make a huge dent in this problem.
The US, through a law called Chapter 15, has tried to cordon off interference by the Cayman Islands (and from other like tax shelter havens) with US courts and US sovereignty. Trikonas lawyer, Michael Gilleran of the Boston law firm of Adler Pollock & Sheehan, commented: Chapter 15 is designed to create a wall against interference with US courts and US sovereignty by courts in tax shelter havens like the Cayman Islands. Courts in such places are trying to batter down the protective wall against them. The wall enacted by Congress, a wall built to protect a great public good, must hold. Cayman courts and Cayman judges, in order to protect their tax shelter racket and the fortunes they have made and will make off of it, are trying to ignore or sneak around the US laws against them.
Judge Jones, has now in the Cayman Islands appointed liquidators to interfere in law suits by a company, known as Trikona, in Connecticut against one of its directors for breach of fiduciary duty. One of these suits is pending in US District Court in Connecticut. Trikona says in the court filings in the Connecticut litigation that its (former) director, Mr. Rak Chugh, formerly of Lehman Brothers, while still a director of Trikona, stole its customer database, used the customer database to set up new companies, competed with Trikona through these new companies, and misappropriated Trikonas business opportunities. The Cayman liquidators, appointed by Judge Jones, are about to be funded by the defendant in the Connecticut litigation, namely, Mr. Rak Chugh. Mr. Chugh is about to or already has, through straw companies he controls, paid the liquidators $500,000 to interfere in the Connecticut litigation against him.

At a recent meeting on Thetis Island, the Islands Trust Council approved a 2013-2014 budget of $6.9 million.
The budget represents a $101,269 increase in expenditures and will result in a 1.3-per-cent increase in Islands Trust property taxes in 2013. A typical property assessed at $450,000 is expected to see a tax increase of approximately $4.
The approved budget supports current service levels, improves bylaw enforcement resources, provides a new permanent position to manage the website and other computer applications for trustees and staff, and supports the following projects:
Further research and advocacy for sustainable and affordable ferry services;
Nearshore mapping (eelgrass and forage fish);
Riparian areas mapping to meet the provincial regulation that requires local governments to protect potential fish habitat.
The 2013-2014 budget will complete or advance programs to address land use planning issues in all local trust areas in consultation with islanders. Examples of these initiatives are affordable housing, farm plans, groundwater and shoreline protection. Each of these topics includes public consultation activities.
Islands Trust Council chair Sheila Malcolmson reflected, During our budget deliberations, we were challenged with a reduced 2013-2014 contribution from the Province and increased wages negotiated by the province under the BCGEU collective agreement.
"Before proposing this budget, Trust Councils Financial Planning Committee carefully considered the options for keeping taxes as low as possible while providing the many projects islanders ask for and meeting mandatory obligations facing local government. Trust Council carefully considered input from trustees and constituents before making its final decision.

MANATEE -- Manatee County ranks 20th of 67 Florida counties for health outcomes, representing how healthy a county's population is based on mortality and morbidity, according to a study.
The county ranked 23rd among 67 for health factors, those items that influence one's health, such as behavioral, economic and environmental factors, according to the study compiled by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
Local health care expert Jennifer Bencie, M.D., cites the rankings when discussing whether voters should increase the county sales tax by a half-cent to finance indigent health care.
"I believe we all want to aim higher in regard to our county's health," said Bencie, administrator of the Manatee County Health Department. She urged the commission last week to put the question before voters in a referendum.
Part of what makes a healthy local population is access to quality medical care, she noted, adding, "There is a large population in Manatee County that cannot afford such luxuries."
The Manatee County Commission did vote 4-3 to put the question on the ballot during a special election June 18.
The discussion Tuesday also highlighted a central question of the debate: How do Manatee County citizens rate in access and quality of health care when compared with other areas?
Two nearby counties, Sarasota and Hillsborough, have already instituted special health-care funding mechanisms.
Compared to Manatee's 20th ranking statewide for
health outcomes, such as premature death, Hillsborough ranked 32nd, and Sarasota ranked third, according to Christine Clayton, communications associate for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
