Freedom of expression threatened post-Arab Spring

More journalists, bloggers, musicians and other public figures are increasingly being summoned to court in an apparent crackdown on freedom of expression in Egypt and Tunisia. But they're not going without a fight.

Egyptian TV satirist Bassem Youssef, who has been compared with United States news parody show host Jon Stewart, this past week had to answer to Egyptian prosecutors over charges of insulting Islam and President Morsi. Although an Egyptian administrative court threw out a lawsuit filed by a Muslim Brotherhood lawyer seeking to ban Youssef and his satirical political show, Youssef still faces other, similar charges.

Meanwhile in Tunisia, rapper Weld El 15 was recently sentenced in absentia to two years in prison for insulting the police. The two cases point to ongoing efforts by Islamist forces to use the courts to muzzle criticism of North African governments.

The fall of dictatorial regimes after the Arab Spring apparently hasn't brought about any durable guarantees for freedom of expression. On the contrary, there seems to be an offensive against free speech in North Africa - yet this is being met with resistance, and the world is looking on.

'Judicial harassment'

Human rights groups note an increase in court cases charging religious defamation. Amnesty International researcher Diana Eltahawy cited an offensive targeting 33 activists, bloggers and politicians over the past few weeks. This represents increasing "judicial harassment" of those leveling political or societal critique, Eltahawy told DW.

This comes despite the new Egyptian constitution guaranteeing freedom of expression. Clauses about defamation opened a legal grey area that certain forces are trying to exploit to muzzle criticism, also in the form of satire.

Eltahawy pointed out that many of the legal challenges are filed by regular individuals or Islamist lawyers. Slander of political figures and denigration of religious values are the primary charges.

But the state prosecution has ultimate say in the matter, Eltahawy added. "They can make the decision not to press charges, not to refer the matters to court," she said. Though it should be defending free speech, instead "the public prosecutor is increasingly charging individuals for freely expressing themselves," Eltahawy said.

A musical group that has experienced trials and tribulations in their steadfast devotion to their faith performed in Vulcan on Saturday.

Simon Ivascu and his brother Stefan fled Romania as teenagers in the late 1990s, when they faced, upon completing high school, mandatory military service.

But freedom of worship was restricted in the army, and the boys, being conscientious Christians, refused to serve. However, this would mean several years of imprisonment and persecution, so they made the difficult decision to flee their home country, facing many dangers and hardships along the way.

Simon left Romania in 1997 while his brother had fled a few years prior. Wesley Pop, a close friend and also a member of the Freedom Singers, left about a year after Simon.

He found his way to Italy, where he stayed until 1999. During his time in Italy, Simon met up with Pop, and the two decided to leave the country together. Stefan was able to stay in Italy until 2006.

Simon and Pop paid cash to gain access to a shipping container, and their handler warned them about the trip ahead and suggested they bring certain items, including several tools that would later prove to be life saving.

Once in the container, they were locked up.

We didnt even know where it was heading, Simon told the Advocate during a phone interview on Friday. We ended up in Montreal.

But it wasnt as easy as that. Before their container was even loaded on a ship, they spent four days at a port, said Simon.

They coped with roasting temperatures inside the container, and eventually, water and food ran out. Oxygen was also running out. In order to breathe, they had to drill holes in the container and used juice box straws to get some air, he said.

NJ rebuilding bayside beaches crucial to birds

MIDDLE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) On both sides of New Jersey, dump trucks are depositing sand and bulldozers are racing against time to spread it out.

Along the ocean, the goal is to restore beaches destroyed by Superstorm Sandy before the tourists arrive. But along Delaware Bay, the beaches need to be ready before the endangered shore birds arrive.

A potential environmental crisis looms that could further deplete the number of already endangered shore birds that depend on beaches along the state's western coast as a stopover in their South America-to-Arctic migration.

The October storm that caused so much devastation along the ocean also pounded the bay's coast, flooding homes and washing away beaches. It is those lost beaches that could spell disaster for species such as the red knot, a bird already on New Jersey's endangered species list and one that's been proposed for inclusion on the federal list.

Red knots and other shore birds land on Delaware Bay beaches by the hundreds of thousands each May, gorging themselves on horseshoe crab eggs to fatten up for the second half of their arduous 10,000-mile migration to Canada. But Sandy washed away about 70 percent of the beaches where horseshoe crabs lay their eggs and where the birds pig out each spring.

New Jersey environmental officials and private ecological groups are teaming up to restore the beaches, racing against time to truck tons of new sand in, spread it around and haul away obstructions such as old, wrecked bulkheads and pilings that keep crabs from reaching their breeding sands.

"If we don't do something about the sand in these places, we're looking at a potentially catastrophic effect on the shore birds when they arrive in May," said Larry Niles, a wildlife biologist supervising the work.

The project started March 18 and will cost more than $900,000 from a mix of public and private sources. Its first phase should be done by late April.

A second phase will involve establishing oyster reefs just offshore to protect the shallow water in which horseshoe crabs spend significant time. The reefs are designed to absorb some of the force of waves before they reach the shore, cutting down on erosion and minimizing stress on the crabs.

Much of the work is centered on a 5.5-mile stretch of bay beaches between Middle Township and Maurice River Township in Cape May County. Tons of sand is being trucked in to Kimbels Beach in Middle Township, which lost most of its sand. The plan is to add a 2-foot-tall beach about 50 feet wide; metal markers 10 yards out into the bay indicate how far east the new sand will eventually be piled.

Fire rings remain a tradition for many

Which came first, the concrete fire ring or "Beach Blanket Bingo?" I would have to say that the concrete fire ring came first.

When I was a teenager in the 1940s, that was one of the special events on the weekends - going to Castle Rock and having a "weenie bake" and making s'mores! The fire rings were called old-fashioned campfires. It was all innocent fun in those days with no mishaps of excessive drinking or being loud, obnoxious or starting fights. The other fire ring enthusiasts would share their victuals with one another in a cordial way, and many romances started at the fire rings ended up in marriage.

In later years, when my kids were of an age that they knew how to behave, all the same fire ring friends would meet on a summer night to resume the weenie bakes. No excessive drinking, being loud, obnoxious or starting fights.

I would hate to see the fire rings go, but I can understand the opponents'' grievances about the environment and the mayhem that can be caused. -- Lois Eisenberg, Valencia

Astronomy Night at CAC filled with stars and poetry

SIGNAL PEAK People can expand their universe by learning all about the actual expanding universe at Central Arizona Colleges The Big Bang Astronomy Night on Friday.

A kid-friendly dinner will be served in the cafeteria from 5 to 6 p.m. for $6.50 a person. A CAC astronomer will be on hand from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Signal Peak Campus astronomy tower to discuss a universe thats going places in every direction.

This will include a discussion on the Planck Satellite, cosmology and why scientists say the universe is 13.7 billion years old, way older even than the tuna in the back of the fridge.

But Astronomy Night isnt all about stars and planets repelling each other. There are plenty of activities that speak to the interests of the events two hosts, the CAC Communications and Science divisions.

Internationally recognized poet Alberto Rios will give a presentation on The Poetry of Science from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. in Room T116.

Other activities include:

--Learning about languages with language games and making a Mothers Day card in different languages like Spanish, French and Russian.

--Storytelling and sharing picture books relating to stars, outer space and other worlds.

--Display of sci-fi film and literature memorabilia, with scale models of Star Trek ships and Star Wars light sabers.

--Activity involving hand washing, learning about germs and how diseases spread and how to protect yourself.

Israeli aerospace giant eyes Brazilian market

Jerusalem, April 8 (IANS) Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) is operating its integrated command, control and communication center in Brazil, the company said in a statement.

Israeli personnel have been dispatched to operate MC4, developed by IAI's MLM Division (which specializes in the development and production of missiles, communications, simulators and other space related products), in an undisclosed Brazilian state as part of intense marketing efforts.

The MC4, which analyzes a massive flow of data received from an array of sensors and platforms, such as drones, unmanned ground and maritime vehicles, radars and security cameras, produces real-time situational awareness of events occurring in various locales, inter-linking security and law enforcement agencies, first responders and local governments at the city, state and federal levels, and implementing protocols for sharing data.

"The system is presently in the demonstration process in preparation for the possibility of signing a contract ahead of international sporting events that will take place in Brazil in the next three years," a senior IAI executive told Xinhua Sunday.

The MC4 could provide decision makers with "proactive, rapid response capabilities. Ultimately, the increased surveillance, alertness and hasty reaction to events are bound to improve security and deter hostile or criminal activities", according to the company's press release.

Brazil is gradually emerging as a lucrative market for IAI's gamut of hi-tech products.

Last month, the company announced winning a tender issued by the Brazilian Air Force for an aerial refueling project.

The Brazilian Federal Police has already deployed IAI-produced drones for surveillance flights over the vast expanses of the Amazon rainforest in anti-drug and other operations.

Last week in this space, I remarked, once again, on the recent rise of the Charleston areas aerospace and information technology industries and what it augurs for the future of the Lowcountry and the area as a so-called Silicon Harbor.

Some thought I overstated the point, arguing Charleston is a far cry from an aerospace and tech hub like Puget Sound, home to Boeings manufacturing center and Microsofts and Amazons headquarters.

Fair enough. Charlestons still small and Old South. But its the trends that intrigue.

So consider the latest evidence: a pair of new conferences coming to Charleston this week that wouldnt have made sense five years ago but seem completely natural now.

The first, starting Tuesday at Charleston Place, is the SpeedNews Aerospace Manufacturing Conference.

It will feature Gov. Nikki Haley, the boss of the local Boeing plant and executives from aerospace suppliers as well as a tour on Wednesday of the so-called Boeing Corridor of aerospace factories along Palmetto Commerce Parkway.

This weekend, the DIG SOUTH Interactive Festival at the College of Charlestons TD Arena takes the torch, playing host to hundreds of out-of-towners and locals who want to talk technology, arts and where they intersect.

The Ruggedized Memory Terminal (RMT) leverages Amphenol Aerospace's MIL-DTL-38999 connector design with integrated Oval Contact System contacts and Datakey Electronics' RUGGEDrive flash drive system

SIDNEY, N.Y.- Amphenol Aerospace (NYSE: APH), a global leader in interconnect technologies, has collaborated with Datakey Electronics, manufacturer of rugged, portable memory systems, to provide a rugged, removable storage solution. The result of this collaboration provides designers with a ruggedized USB flash drive and panel-mount receptacle solution.

The Ruggedized Memory Terminal (RMT) integrates components from both corporations. Instead of using a standard USB type A connector, the RMT leverages Datakey Electronics' SR4220PCB receptacle, which is integrated into Amphenol's field-proven MIL-DTL-38999 connector. The receptacle mates with Datakey Electronics' UFX RUGGEDrive memory tokens, which provide USB flash drive functionality, but have a more rugged construction and employ additional security features than consumer flash drives. Amphenol's high speed Oval Contact System (OCS), on the alternate side of the RMT, provides a reliable interconnect system for ruggedized computers and devices.

The SR4220PCB receptacle in the RMT has a cycle life of 50,000 insertion and removal operations minimum. Amphenol's OCS is a high density, high speed, rugged interconnect that withstands a minimum of 500 mating cycles. The MIL-DTL-38999 connector offers the highest performance capabilities for both general duty and severe environment applications. A screw-on cover is used to provide an IP68 seal when the cover is fully mated. The cover can be used both when a UFX token is present or not.

Ball Aerospace Begins Integration Phase for DigitalGlobe’s WorldView-3 Satellite

BOULDER, Colo., April 8, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. has begun integration for WorldView-3, the next generation commercial remote-sensing satellite being built for DigitalGlobe, a leading global provider of high-resolution earth imagery solutions.

The third satellite in a series to employ the Ball Commercial Platform (BCP) 5000, WorldView-3 is slated for launch in mid-2014. For more than a decade Ball Aerospace has partnered with DigitalGlobe to deliver increasingly advanced imaging satellites, including WorldView-2 in 2009, WorldView-1 in 2007, and QuickBird in 2001.

"Our experience building spacecraft for DigitalGlobe has allowed for quick progress on WorldView-3," said Cary Ludtke, vice president and general manager of Ball's Operational Space business unit. "WorldView-3 will be a highly capable spacecraft based on a low risk design with proven results. We're eager for it to join DigitalGlobe's growing constellation."

Currently the integration of the control moment gyroscopes (CMGs) and the propulsion module is underway in anticipation of the ITT Exelis imaging sensor delivery in mid-2013. Following successful sensor integration and checkout, environmental testing of the completed satellite is scheduled to begin in this fall.

WorldView-3 will offer 31 centimeter resolution panchromatic, 1.24 meter resolution eight-band multispectral and 3.72 meter resolution eight-band Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) imagery. U.S. government restrictions require DigitalGlobe's imagery provided to non-U.S. government customers be limited to no more than 50 centimeters panchromatic, 2.0 meter multispectral or, 7.5 meter SWIR.

WorldView-3 builds upon the WorldView-2 and WorldView-1 technology by carrying forward the satellite's advanced CMGs. The CMGs reorient a satellite over a desired collection area in 4-5 seconds, compared to 30-45 seconds needed for traditional reaction wheels. As WorldView-3 joins the modern fleet of WorldView-class satellites, DigitalGlobe will have the largest high resolution satellite imagery collection capacity in the industry.

In addition, the range of customer applications enabled by the DigitalGlobe constellation and overall value DigitalGlobe can provide to customers is greatly expanded by issuance of a license from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to collect eight-band short-wave infrared imagery. Jeff Culwell, vice president of DigitalGlobe's data business line notes this will allow WorldView-3 the ability to sense both the visible spectrum as well as deeper into the infrared spectrum that provides a rich dataset to precisely identify different manmade and natural materials.
