The private sector will be asked to build and operate a 423-bed hospital on the northern beaches to complement Mona Vale Hospital, which will be redeveloped and reduced in size.
Manly Hospital will close as foreshadowed and bed numbers at Mona Vale Hospital will be reduced from 142 to 66.
Health Minister Jillian Skinner said expressions of interest would be invited from the private sector to design, construct and run the new hospital at Frenchs Forest. It will include 173 beds for privately insured patients and is due to open in 2018.
Concerned about the private model: Andrew McDonald. Photo: Darren Pateman
Mrs Skinner said the successful tenderer would be a private or not-for-profit hospital operator. The hospital would revert to public ownership in 20 years.

"This innovative model is a first in NSW,'' she said. "Partnering with a private or not-for-profit hospital operator will allow the hospital to be built faster, delivering better value for the taxpayers of NSW.''
Mrs Skinner said the government had learnt lessons from the failed privatisation of Port Macquarie Hospital. She said the public private partnership model used would be more flexible than the one for Port Macquarie. It would be similar to the model used at Joondalup Health Campus in West Australia.
The hospital will include an emergency department and provide surgical, medical, paediatric, obstetric and inpatient mental health services.

New northern beaches hospital to be funded by the private sector
Looking down at my feet, I recalled my decision to wear the flat, grey futsal (indoor soccer) shoes when participating in a running event being held on Kuta Beach that day.
I was fully aware that they were not really designed for the purpose, but wore them anyway because I figured the reduced traction from the beachs sand would render even the most advanced running shoes meaningless.
However, shortly after the sirens blared and I joined the rushing wave of people, I realized that my shoes were probably the least of my worries.
Instead, I should have asked myself whether or not I had the stamina to runthree kilometers straight.
I hardly have a steady running habit and I found the 3K Beach Fun Run held by the Sheraton Bali Kuta Resort to be quite challenging. But those looking for a chance to stay in shape may find that it is just the right thing for them.
In general, Bali is a good place for runners. It is blessed with plenty of lovely beaches, which can be a fun alternative to the usual concrete jogging tracks. What's more is that people are eager to participate in running events, if you ever long for a more communal exercise.
Look no further than the well-known beaches in Bali for your running route: Kuta, Jimbaran, Seminyak, Sanur and Nusa Dua each offer at leastthree kilometers stretches for running complete with picturesque scenery.
The noticeable thing when running on sand is that you have a less stable surface beneath your feet. After a short run, you will notice how covering a certain distance requires more effort than when you run on solid surfaces giving you a sense of frustration not unlike when you try to run in water.
This problem can be minimized by running closer to the shoreline. Areas that have been washed by the waves attain a hardened texture, making it easier to run on. But do pay attention to the waves coming to shore and avoid them; squelchy, wet shoes are hardly the most pleasant things for your feet. Come to the beaches before 10 a.m. and you will find plenty of other runners in the area, ranging from serious runners in proper gear to the elderly, running barefoot in casual attire.
Late in the afternoon is another good time to run, but by then these beaches are usually crowded with tourists and you will likely have to practice plenty of dodging and sharp-turn maneuvers.

This summer, simply enjoying a Landshark is an easy way to contribute to cleaner beaches."
Last year, Landshark Lager distributors and their employees participated in Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup, the largest annual volunteer effort for the ocean, drawing more than half a million participants a year. This year's Cleanup will take place on September 21, 2013.

Why did Confederate troops shoot their own general, 'Stonewall' Jackson? The position of the moon played a big role, an astronomer discovers.
Thanks to astronomy, the 19th century mystery surrounding the death of Confederate general "Stonewall" Jackson during the Civil War may finally be solved.

Lieutenant General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson was a majorfigure in the Civil War, second in command to Confederate general Robert E. Lee, when he was shot by friendly fire during the Battle of Chancellorsvilleon May 2, 1863. Shortly after that battle in northeastern Virginia, Jackson died of his wounds, leaving the Confederate army without one of its boldest military strategists just two months before the pivotal Battle of Gettysburg.
But exactly how Jackson's own troops could have mistaken him for the enemy has been unexplained until now. [Astronomy Detectives Solve Civil War Mystery (Photos)]
Firsthand accounts of the Chancellorsville battle describe how Jackson kept his troops fighting into the night a rarity at the time. That same day he had accomplished a major victory, squashing the Union's Twelfth Corps in a famous "flank attack." When the sun set that night and the sky darkened, Jackson pressed on, continuing the fighting by moonlight. It was then that a Confederate officer on the left wing of the 18th North Carolina regiment spotted Jackson and a group of riders coming toward him.
Mistaking his commander for advancing enemies, Major John Barry ordered his troops to fire. Jackson was hit with bullets in his right wrist and left arm, which had to be amputated, and died of complications from pneumonia eight days later.
Hi death has been described as a blow of bad luck, and Barry reportedly "felt extreme guilt over giving the command to fire," according to historian James Gillispie's book "Cape Fear Confederates" (McFarland, 2012).
But now, astronomers say they know why Barry couldn't identify his commander it's all because ofthe moon. Astronomer Don Olson of Texas State University and Laurie E. Jasinski, a researcher and editor at the Texas State Historical Association, report their findings in the May 2013 issue ofSky & Telescopemagazine.

The head of Rolls-Royce's aerospace division, Mark King, has resigned despite only taking up the job in January.
Mr King, who has worked for Rolls since 1986 in a variety of roles, will leave the engine maker in June amid an investigation into allegations of corruption in Indonesia and China.
The Serious Fraud Office is investigating claims that Rolls representatives paid bribes to win aerospace engine contracts in Asia. Rolls has also hired Lord Gold, a Conservative peer, to compile a report on its compliance procedures.
Rolls gave no reason for the departure of Mr King in a stock market statement. He will be replaced by Tony Wood, who is head of the marine business.
Mr King was the head of Rolls' civil aerospace division - which makes engines for airlines around the world - before being promoted to president of entire aerospace business
Alongside the departure of Mr King, Rolls said that trading in the first quarter of its financial year has been "consistent with our expectations".
The FTSE 100 engine maker, which will hold its annual general meeting on Thursday, said: "Since the preliminary 2012 results in February, we have won a $1.6bn order from International Airlines Group for Trent XWB engines, with long-term TotalCare service support, to power 18 Airbus A350-1000 aircraft, we have signed multiple contracts to provide and service military transport engines for the US Air Force and US Marine Corp, and we have started construction of the state-of-the-art core manufacturing facility in Derby that will produce reactor cores for the UK's current and future submarines programme."
The rest is here:
LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Rolls-Royce on Thursday announced the shock departure of Mark King, the highly regarded boss of its key aerospace business.
Rolls, the world's second-largest maker of aircraft engines behind U.S. group General Electric , on Thursday said King, the president of its aerospace unit had decided to resign from the company at the end of June and would be replaced by Tony Wood, the president of Rolls' marine unit on May 13.
King joined Rolls in 1986 and was appointed president of its civil aerospace business in August 2007 and then president of aerospace in January 2013 when Rolls' civil and defense businesses were brought together to create one aerospace division.
Jefferies analyst Sandy Morris said King was "a highly regarded member of the management team ... reflected in the perceptions of investors and analysts alike" and that his departure was "not going to pass unremarked".
Morris said he assumed King was leaving Rolls "for personal reasons".
Aerospace accounted for 8.8 billion pounds of the group's 12.2 billion pounds of revenues in 2012.
Late last year Rolls said it could face prosecution after Britain's Serious Fraud Office ordered it to conduct an internal inquiry into possible bribery and corruption by intermediaries in China, Indonesia and other overseas markets.
The FTSE-100 firm has hired lawyer David Gold to lead a review of its compliance procedures after the allegations emerged. Gold started his review in February.
Rolls, a major British exporter which dates back to 1884, said it was on track to report good growth in underlying profit in 2013 after a strong first quarter from its civil aerospace unit. Last month it won a $1.6 billion order from IAG for Trent XWB engines to power 18 of its new Airbus A350 long-haul jets.
The company is expected to report an average 2013 pretax profit of 1.74 billion pounds, according to a Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S poll of 18 analysts.

Relumins, a brand that is always on the cutting edge of pharmaceutical-grade skincare, has developed a cream that does it all. The Relumins scientists and product engineers, who have access to world-class data and research, have created a TA Stem cell day cream to target signs of skin aging. So what is TA- Stem Cell therapy and how does this wonder cream work?
Relumins unveils the first whitening & aging cream to combine Placental Protein and TA- Stem Cell to actually make your look younger and healthier. The Relumins TA-Stem Cell Therapy day cream uses Biocellact CHAMOMILLA BD a natural anti-aging ingredient extracted from Chamomile flowers, to slow down aging and production of TA-Stem Cells causing a delay in skin wrinkles and dryness. Laboratory tests not only prove that Biocellact CHAMOMILLA BD slows down aging of TA-stem cells but keeps them in vital condition. Keeping the TA-Stem cells in vital condition, with the combination of stimulating collagen, delays new wrinkle formation and allows skin a smoother, firmer, more youthful appearance.
Skin whitening products are often drying to the skin, the new Relumins face cream is the opposite, and it absorbs deep and leaves the skin feeling hydrated and fresh. After a few weeks of use the skin is noticeable different with fine lines lightened. Says Suzzy of Flawless Beauty and Skin
This amazing new formula is designed to whiten skin, and help you achieve a healthy even glow. The active ingredients are nestled in a light micro gel-cream designed to hydrate and deeply absorb into the skin. Having the cream penetrate deep into the skins layers, allows the ingredients to breakdown dark pigments and prevent new pigment formation. Placental Proteins are also used to help revive tired damaged skin as well as stimulate healthy skin repair. The Relumins TA- Stem Cell formula uses not only active ingredients but also UVA/UVB sun protection, which helps prevent premature aging.
Relumins was developed for people worldwide who demanded high quality effective skincare products without filler ingredients and produced in a state of the art facility. Their commitment to their growing international customer base is to offer complete transparency when it comes to products, processes and the ingredients used. The entire Relumins brand is produced in compliance with United States FDA regulations, and in accordance with strict industry and safety guidelines. This skin care brand guarantees the integrity of the ingredients and the compositional makeup of their products, something rare in the marketplace.
The growing Relumins product line targets all skin care needs, including skin whitening, anti-aging, skin brightening, melasma, age spots, acne control & underarm and intimate specialized products, put them at the leading edge of natural skincare, & lifelong beauty. Relumins uses product descriptions that are clear and informative. When describing the product, the ingredients are each defined with specific benefit and health attribute. Directions, warnings, and possible side effects are all clearly listed. No wonder why this product line is already receiving rave international reviews.

Different parts of our body regenerate and age differently for the duration of our natural lifespan. Ageing can be normal, can be accelerated or can be delayed the phenomenon otherwise known as anti-ageing.
In a previous article on nutri-genomics, we discussed the predispositions of our genes and how our lifestyle can influence how our body performs in terms of health. So how should we manage our lifestyle in order that we can better manage our delayed ageing?
In a best case scenario, a typical person ages at a normal rate but in most cases this happens at an accelerated rate. Our individual and unique genetic profile also means that all of us require a personalised delayed ageing or anti-ageing plan for successful ageing.
A successful ageing plan would ideally be evidence-based with suitable outcomes rather than just controlled trials with results. Therefore our plan would ideally be based on extending lifespan with optimal health that we have defined as active longevity.
Active longevity fulfils our desire to stay young, be beautiful and energetic synonymous with the prime of our lives.
Active longevity is achievable with the latest findings of how our body heals with peak performance and the technological advantage to achieve it.
The world population is advancing at a rapid pace and with families getting smaller by the decade and where within another generation, there will be two elderly to every child.
Wellness will not be attained by popping a pill for every illness and it is critical that we take action now for our personal well-being.

Growing old vs active longevity

When you talk about tech, you talk about high risk, high reward. Tech is what you use today and throw away tomorrow. Recall the pager? At one time, owning one was the in thing. Now, however, walk around with one and you will be hit with comments like, Hey friend, the 90s called, they want their pager back.
The tech sector is by far the most volatile area to invest your money in. In fact, renowned value investor and multi-billionaire Warren Buffett knows this. He has recurrently avoided tech stocks and has, on several occasions, publicly said that he was not in a position to predict the future of social-media giant Facebook and iPhone-maker Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL)). Buffetts only prolific bet on tech was his huge 2011 IBM buy; a $10.5 billion buy that secured him a 5.4% stake in IBM.
Despite the volatility in tech, I personally believe that there are a few players with predictable futures; tech players that not only have forward-looking prospects but that also exude the all-important element of longevity. One such player is Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN)).
I know whats going through your mind right now. Isnt that the stock that saw its past quarters net income drop a staggering 37%? Yes it is. However, the decrease in profit was a sacrifice that, in my opinion, signals the companys inclination toward long-term growth.
Tradeoff between immediate returns and long-term growth
As ancient philosopher Plato would have put it, "better be ignorant of a matter than half know it." Amazons 37% decline in profit did not happen without good reason. In fact, the companys top line increased notably, gaining 22% year-over-year to come in at $16.1 billion from $13.2 billion a year earlier. The reason behind the strained margins was the managements conscious decision to spend more on growth-disposed projects.
One such project is the building of distribution warehouses throughout the country. These warehouses are close to key metropolitan areas such as New York and San Francisco. The building project has gone on for a while now, and more and more warehouses are popping up throughout the country.
Whats the catch with huge brick-and-mortar establishments?

A diet low in grains, beans and certain vegetables combined with "anti-aging" supplements improved blood vessel function, in a study presented at the American Heart Association's Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology 2013 Scientific Sessions.
The blood vessel abnormality, or endothelial dysfunction, occurs when cells lining the interior wall of blood vessels malfunction. It's a serious condition that's often one of the first signs of heart disease.
Of the 200 51- to 86-year-old people in the study, 40 percent were women. All had risk factors for blood vessel disease and nearly three-quarters had endothelial dysfunction.
The diet restricted foods high in the sugar-binding protein lectin, generally regarded as a healthy nutrient. The restricted foods included grains, beans, fruit, poultry and plants belonging to the nightshade family, which includes tomatoes. At the same time, patients consumed plenty of leafy greens, shellfish and fish, olive oil and grass-fed animal protein, while taking supplements containing the antioxidant polyphenol from fish oil, grape seed extract and vitamins. Antioxidants are thought to slow cell aging.
"These findings represent a fundamental paradigm shift in how the diseases of the 'Western Diet' should be treated," said Steven R. Gundry, M.D., lead author and medical director of the International Heart & Lung Institute at The Center for Restorative Medicine in Palm Springs, Calif. "Simple removal of 'healthy' lectin-containing foods, and taking a few inexpensive supplements, may restore endothelial function to normal, which in turn can reverse high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity."
Despite the study's findings, consumers shouldn't eliminate tomatoes or other healthy foods from their diets, said the American Heart Association, which recommends consuming a diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fish.
