Freedom Cable yanks Australia from subsea rollout

Freedom Cable is pulling the pin on an extension of its subsea fibre optic cable proposal to Australia, after apparently failing to secure $50 million in financial backing.

The abrupt change of plans comes only seven weeks after the extension idea was first proposed by entrepreneur and bandwidth brokerage company chief, Sunil Tagare.

Tagare said this morning that his venture had been seeking a $50 million investment from Telstra in return for 3 Tbps of capacity on the cable.

However, he claimed that Telstra declined to review the proposal.

A Telstra spokesman has been contacted by iTnews for comment.

"Since they declined to review my offer, I have taken Australia off the map," Tagare said. "I will soon publish Ver 3.2 of the Freedom Cable where I bring the cable straight to California from Guam."

Tagare did not say whether he had shopped the proposal to any other carriers or financiers in Australia.

One reason why Telstra is likely to have been cold on the investment is that it has already made financial injections into two subsea cable projects this year.

in January, Telstra bought one of four fibre pairs on the ASSC-1 cable, which is to run between Perth and Singapore.

Two months later, Telstra said it would buy a fibre pair on another cable set to run the Perth-Singapore route, SubPartners' APX-West, whose operator is fronted by Bevan Slattery and Ted Pretty.

Freedom Riders Support Family in Need

A freedom ride was canceled due to the rainy conditions, but a barbecue, silent auction and fundraiser for a family in need went on as scheduled.

Proceeds from this annual event usually go to a child or a freedom rider facing medical challenges.

This year all proceeds go to a Freedom Rider named Eric Dienert.

Eric was diagnosed with a stage four brain tumor in March, and his wife says he's been through 50 radiation treatments, and 5 1/2 weeks of chemo.

We talked with Eric's wife Kursten who has been to these events in the past with her husband supporting others, but never thought she'd be here for her own family.

"From the moment that Eric was diagnosed, every single day, somebody's checking on us, coming to see us, bringing us dinner, I mean it's just phenomenal, we wouldn't be where we are without this group of people, and so we stay positive because Eric's still here, and we have each day to be thankful for that." says Kursten Dienert, Eric's wife.

In about four weeks, Eric will be starting chemotherapy again.

But in just nine days, thanks to donations, Eric and Kursten will be taking their three children to Disney world.

On Jan. 29, 1944, Capt. Lee Van Syckle's B-17 "Flying Fortress" crew, based in Deenethorpe, England, was one of more than 800 U.S. bombers in a massive daylight raid on Frankfurt. Shortly after Van Syckle's plane dropped its bombs and turned away, a group of Messerschmitt fighters attacked the B-17 and others in the lower box of the American wing.

A young navigator from a prominent Colorado family was among the 10-man crew on the B-17.

He was 2nd Lt. Richard Lee Monfort.

Next Sunday, during Memorial Day weekend, Denver radio host and veterans advocate Rick Crandall of KEZW's "Breakfast Club" will watch his dream become reality, after years of fundraising. At 2 p.m., the Colorado Freedom Memorial will be dedicated in Aurora. The memorial honors nearly 6,000 Coloradans killed or missing in action while serving their country.

Here, that navigator the uncle of Rockies owners Richard Lee "Dick" Monfort, whose name is another tribute, and Charlie Monfort represents them all.

Richard Monfort and his younger brother, Kenneth, were sons of Greeley cattle feeder Warren Monfort. Before the U.S. entered World War II, the brothers showed champion steers at the State Fair and the National Western Stock Show.

Richard was a junior at Colorado A&M in Fort Collins when he enlisted in the Army in December 1942. During training, he married Viola Swanson of Greeley. Ultimately, he was deployed to England with the 8th Air Force's 401st Bomb Group, 615th Squadron.

The mission to Frankfurt was his crew's third.

The official "Missing Air Crew Report," opened after the mission and supplemented over the next 18 months, was declassified in 1973. Of course, it is not pretty. The Messerschmitts, equipped with machine guns and cannons firing 20mm rockets, hit three B-17s. A rocket struck Monfort's

In the nose, bombardier Stanley Groski was firing the chin turret gun when the plane was hit, and the impact knocked him back into Monfort. Amid the chaos, the bailout order came. Groski later said he believed Monfort was wounded before they jumped. Also, as they left the front of the plane, the Messerschmitts still were firing on the B-17.

Why Entrepreneurs Choose Freedom Over Money

"Show me the freedom" doesnt have quite the same ring as "Show me the money," but it could be the tagline for a movie about entrepreneurs.

Despite reporting more day-to-day stress, lower earnings and more hours worked than people employed by others, research shows that entrepreneurs are more satisfied with their jobs -- and happier in general.

According to research by the Pew Foundation, 39 percent of entrepreneurs report experiencing "complete" job satisfaction versus 28 percent of those who work for a boss.

This greater job satisfaction spills over into the rest of their lives, and has a lasting effect. A recent study out of the Max Planck Institute of Economics in Germany and the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom revealed that transitioning from wage employment to self-employment boosted people's overall life satisfaction for as long as two years after their move.

The greater satisfaction of entrepreneurs doesn't come from earning more money. The average earnings for Americans aged 15 and older was $31,683 in 2011 according to the most current Census Bureau data. For the self-employed subset, this figure was $30,766.

Nor do higher levels of happiness stem from less work or less stress. Full-time self-employed people work more hours than full-time wage employed people, according to 2013 figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Entrepreneurs also spend double the amount of time thinking about work when not at work as those who work for others, according to a survey of 2,000 business owners and employees conducted last September by AXA Business Insurance.

People who work for themselves are happier because of the freedom that working for one's self permits. So valuable is the opportunity to be one's own boss that studies show you have to pay people twice as much to get them to work for others and still have the same level of job satisfaction as being self-employed.

Of course, the chance to be one's own boss is why most Americans go into business for themselves. When a representative sample of 3,001 American adults were asked by surveyors from TNS Custom Research in the second half of 2012 why they would prefer to work for themselves 54 percent said "personal independence" and "self-fulfillment." An additional 33 percent said "freedom to choose place and time of working." In contrast, only 9 percent said "better income prospects."

Despite the fact that people who work for themselves earn less, work more, have fewer benefits and experience more on the job stress than those who work for others, a majority of Americans would prefer to be entrepreneurs. Workplace autonomy is a powerful motivator.

Google clearly has a number of strengths, but its greatest may be the freedom to fail. Google shares are up more than 28% so far in 2013 and the companys market capitalization recently topped $300 billion for the first time. Investors are bullish on Googles prospects for the future and perhaps one of the reasons is that Google has shown time and time again that it is willing to take big risks in an effort to drive innovation.

In a recent article, The Wall Street JournalsSteve Rosenbush hypothesized that Googles greatest strength may be the luxury of failure. He describes Googles strategy as a reckless, up-for-anything approach and notes that it seems to be working quite well since Googles stock is worth 50% more now than it was a year ago and revenue has climbed 30% over that period of time.

Phones equipped with the Android operating system are outselling the once-unassailable iPhone, Rosenbush wrote.Google is also building virtual reality glasses that are about to hit the market. Its drawing board includes emerging technology for autonomous cars, and who knows what else. Sure, it has had some missesits Google + social network has its fans, but has yet to achieve truly significant market traction. Its inexpensive Chromebook laptops have limited appeal, too.

Google has proven time and time again that its not afraid to fail. While some of its big gambles have crashed and burned, others have grown to become core businesses for the Internet giant. It is impossible to innovate without taking risks, and the fact that Google is more successful than most of its rivals is directly related to its willingness to take chances.
