HAMPSHIRE Sophia Kamran, daughter of Hampshire Village Clerk Linda Vasquez, will be graduating from Harvard Medical School in Boston on May 30.

Kamran said that she first came to Hampshire from Streamwood with her mother and grandparents, Peter and Mary Vasquez, in 1996. She attended Hampshire Middle School for three years and Hampshire High School for one year before she enrolled at the Illinois Mathematics & Science Academy in Aurora.

I was involved in basketball, band and the gifted program at Hampshire Middle School, Kamran said. At Hampshire High School, I participated in marching band, the yearbook, the school newspaper, the high school musical, color guard, basketball, and track and field.

After Kamran graduated from IMSA, she was awarded a scholarship through The Gates Millennium Scholars so she could enroll at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She graduated from MIT in 2008 with a double major in biology and biological engineering.

Kamran applied and was accepted at Harvard Medical School. During her fourth year there, she was awarded a fellowship through the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to conduct research in hematology. During that year, she had several research papers published on various subjects including the genetics of hemoglobin switching, thyroid cancer, in vitro fertilization, and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors.

When you conduct research, publication is important in order to share information and data among scientists, Kamran said.

New York Liberty ready for fresh start with new coach Bill Laimbeer

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- When the New York Liberty open the regular season May 25 in Connecticut, you might not recognize them.

They have a new coach, many new players, and perhaps more, important, a new outlook on the game they love.

Coach and general manager Bill Laimbeer, in his first season with Liberty, has brought a defense-first approach to a team that went 15-19 last season. And to help matters, he drafted several players who should help balance a lineup that still includes All-Star guard Cappie Pondexter.

It's hard to argue with his success, and Laimbeer is intent on changing the culture around the franchise. He brings an impressive resume with him. With the Detroit Shock, Laimbeer made six consecutive playoff appearances and won three league titles. He was with Detroit for eight seasons.

"Defensively, we want to use our physical strength and athleticism to play a smothering, aggressive defense with the emphasis on no second shots," Laimbeer said. "We have built a team that is big and strong at all positions with defense in mind."

In the first round, the Liberty selected Texas A&M center Kelsey Bone and Oklahoma State forward Toni Young. They also snared three guards later in the draft: Tennessee's Kamiko Williams, Shenneika Smith of St. John's, and Olcay Cakir of Turkey.

"We addressed some of our weaknesses, even after our free-agent signings," Laimbeer said. "Kelsey Bone will add depth to our bigs, Toni Young adds to our athleticism and philosophy of players that can play at least two positions. Kamiko Williams is an intriguing player who should learn well from veterans like Katie Smith. We are very excited about this draft class.

"We were able to select every player we targeted."

New York finished in fourth place last season in the East, and narrowly made the playoffs. It wasn't a long stay, though. The Liberty lost to Connecticut in the first round, 2-0. The Sun were eliminated in the next round.

''Offensively, we want to attack the shot clock from start to finish,'' Laimbeer said. ''No more walking the ball up the floor for the New York Liberty.''

Epsom Derby. Click here to bet.

It's only a week since the imposing colt won the York trial from Trading Leather and with just over a week to go until the Derby he'll be doing nothing strenuous in the lead up to the big race.

"Hopefully there's still a bit more to come, but time will tell on that one," Burke told Racing UK.

"There's no doubt that if he was with one of the bigger yards that have regular Classic runners he'd be a few points shorter, but I don't take that as disrespect - that's just natural.

"Obviously we have a very fit horse and in many ways it's easier for us. We can just float him into the Derby from here and he'll do a few canters and maybe have one little blow next Tuesday before the Derby and all being well we'll end up at Epsom."

Burke was speaking at Pontefract after Stepping Ahead was a mighty impressive winner in the Tony Lewis & Our Best Pal Handicap.

Sent off the 5/1 joint-second favourite in a field of five, the son of Footstepsinthesand defied a handicap mark of 77 in some style by easing to a seven-length success over rank outsider Mystical Man.

Sir Michael Stoute's 8/11 favourite Mission Approved was a big disappointment in fourth.

Burke said of his impressive winner: "He was pretty backward last year, but we've given him time and we thought we had a chance with his handicap mark.
