Despite the uncertainty related to sequestration, huge defense budget cuts, and cancellation of big-ticket programs, the global aerospace and defense industry has nicely held up so far this year. This is largely attributable to technological innovations, big contracts, acquisitions and growing commercial demand.
Since the domestic aerospace and defense sector is facing budget cuts and a constrained spending environment from the U.S. government, the industry is looking for growth from international orders.
Additionally, a number of new emerging markets as well as developed nations, such as India, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Brazil, are boosting defense spending and generating business for the U.S. aerospace and defense companies.
Still, the U.S. is the leader in global defense spending. The country is not only a major superpower, but it also has strategic alliances with other foreign nations that have major military strengths and geopolitical concerns.
The country sometimes shares its military technology and supplies sophisticated weapons to its allies. These activities in turn boost the revenue of the defense operators and suppliers who sell these military applications to nations around the world (read: Any hope for Aerospace and Defense Industry ETFs in 2013? ).
However, on the flip side, the industry's position is challenged by global competition, changes in technology, national and worldwide economic conditions, and global policies affecting defense, civilian and commercial aviation. Going forward, the industry, in particular the defense sector, will face challenges as the federal government will look for solutions to the ongoing budget crisis.
Further, sequestration still remains an overhang both in the civil and military sectors. The companies that have little diversification outside the U.S. are highly susceptible to spending cuts from sequestration. On the other hand, those with an international order book would find it less difficult to face the brunt of sequestration (read: With Sequester Ahead, Are Defense ETFs in Trouble? ).
Overall, the industry has been performing well compared to other sectors, so investors seeking diversification should consider ETFs that target the aerospace & defense industry in the portfolio.
Considering the broad issues and opportunities, a look at top ranked aerospace & defense ETFs could be a winning choice for investors seeking to benefit from the positive market trends. One way to find a top ranked ETF in the financial space is by using the Zacks ETF Ranking system (read: Zacks ETF Rank Guide ).

LAS VEGAS -- A North Las Vegas aerospace company is preparing to boldly go where few have gone before -- a public-private partnership with NASA that could be the start of the next space race.
Nevada's Bigelow Aerospace Co. made a joint announcement with NASA Thursday morning in Washington, D.C., that puts the North Las Vegas company in the pilot seat for the exploration and commercial development of the moon, Mars and beyond.
When the I-Team broke the news in late March that Bigelow Aerospace had signed an agreement with NASA to become, in essence, the general contractor for the commercial development of space, there was considerable skepticism within the national aerospace press corps, who figured it couldn't be true because they would have known about it.
Well, it is true, and on Thursday, NASA admitted as much. The agreement is as wide open as space itself and it puts Bigelow right in the middle of exciting scenarios worthy of Star Trek.
Company founder Bob Bigelow's longstanding interest in building a commercial base on the surface of the moon just took a giant leap forward. He built his aerospace company from scratch in just a little over a decade, and is now a full-fledged partner with NASA in exploring the final frontier.
The Space Act Agreement signed by NASA and Bigelow contains extraordinary and ambitious language about extending human civilization throughout the solar system -- a colony on Mars, for instance. As Bigelow has told the I-Team several times over the past 10 years that he wants to use a string of his homegrown, inflatable habitats as the building blocks of a permanent base on the moon.
I-Team: "You look at this, and realize, you're serious. This could happen in our lifetime."
Bigelow: "We've already had clients who have an interest in lunar activity ... If you had a facility, we would be interested in talking to you about it, on the lunar surface. There's no reason you could not have multiple bases."
Back in January, Bigelow and NASA announced that the space agency would spend $18 million on one of his inflatable spacecraft to serve as an addition to the International Space Station, but during the announcement, Bigelow let slip his plans for his own space station, which could be built and launched within three years at a fraction of the cost of NASA's version.
At the time, he was already negotiating with NASA for a much larger role in the next space race, and now, he has it. Bigelow Aerospace will be the central link between NASA and dozens of private companies that want to play a role in the creation of a new economy -- a space economy, including proposals far more complex than mere space tourism: research, manufacturing, medicine and agriculture.

Be nice, worship God and eat pigs feet: Thats how Jeralean Talley of Inkster, Michigan says she lived to celebrate her 114th birthday today and be crowned the oldest person in the United States. Using census records, the Gerontology Research Group verified her titleafter the previous oldest American, Elsie Thompson, died at 113 in March. Talley is still a youngster, relatively speaking, compared to the worlds oldest person, Jiroemon Kimura, who is 116 and lives in Japan.

In a phone conversation on the eve of her 114th birthday, Talley told TIME, I feel okay. These days, the supercentenarian lives with her daughter Thelma Holloway, 75, and says she passesthe time by watching The Ellen DeGeneres ShowandWheel of Fortuneas well as listening to baseball on the radio though she doesnt have a favorite team. She can stay up as late as midnight and feasts on her favorite foods: potato salad, honey buns, McDonalds chicken nuggets and Wendys chili.
Holloway says her mother stayed active over the years by sewing dresses, making quilts and playing the slot machines at casinos. She also bowled until she was about 104 and her legs got too weak but not before scoring 200 in one game. Now Talley, who sits all day, tries to work out by waving her arms in the air and kicking her feet.Twice a year, she goes fishing for catfish and trout with her friend Michael Kinloch, 54, an engineer she met at church in 1990. She literally throws her line in, and Ill run over and try to pull in the fish, he says. We do that routine until she gets tired of it, and then well head home.

Jeralean Kurtz was born in rural Montrose, Georgia on May 23, 1899, on a large farm where she spent long hours picking cotton and peanuts and digging sweet potatoes out of the ground until sunset. In 1935, she moved to Michigan, and a year later, she married Alfred Talley. They lived in Inkster and were wed for 52 years before he died onOctober 17, 1988, at the age of 95. She boasts three grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and is the godmother to Kinlochs 19-year-old son Tyler. When she met Tyler for the first time as a newborn, sheput a $5 bill in his tiny fist. God told me that when your child is born, I should give him $5, she said, according to Kinloch.
Talley always says, do unto others as you desire them to do unto you, and insists thats the secret to living a long life. Also, eating plenty of pork. Every Christmas, she bakes Kinloch a Hogs Head Cheese which doesnt have cheese, but is basically pigs ears and feet in a jelly stock. I personally feel like its one of those things that kind of keeps her going, he says. He may have a point. Last month, a 105-year-old woman in Texas claimed that bacon was her secret to longevity. Talley is also known for her sweet tooth and has made friends walnut pie with walnuts from the walnut tree in her backyard.

1. Xophoria active cacao compounds are encapsulated into exclusive lipid structures called Theospheres. 2. Theospheres penetrate the layers of the skin, where they release cacaos active compounds to bind with skin cell receptor sites. 3. This triggers the skin cells to release neurotransmitters called endorphins, which are feel good/pleasure chemicals also produced in the brain. Endorphins also travel to other organ systems and can de-stress or relax your skin, muscles and immune system. This is fantastic news for busy, stressed-out men and woman.

India, May 23 -- King Bhartrihari was a legendary king of India. Savant, scholar and benevolent monarch, his was a golden period. A saint was passing by his capital on a pilgrimage. He had heard of this great king. He met the king and offered him a mango, saying, "This is a divinely-blessed fruit. O mighty king. Eating this will give you longevity and perfect health in body, mind and spirit. You deserve it, so that you continue to serve your countrymen".
The king pondered and decided to give it to the person he thought was most devoted to him and loved him the most. He went to the palace of his youngest queen, and asked her to eat it. The queen took the fruit and gave it to the palace and city chief of security, with whom she was secretly in love. The chief of security was in love with a courtesan of great beauty and accomplishments. He gave the fruit to the courtesan and told her about the qualities of the fruit.
The courtesan was a truthful and god-fearing woman. She questioned herself, "Do I deserve to eat this magical fruit?" Prompt came the answer from within, "No". Then she felt the only person who deserved it was the king. If he lived long and healthy, it would benefit the whole country rather than one insignificant individual. The king was surprised, but being benevolent, let her meet him. The courtesan took out the fruit and said it was a magical fruit and the king was the only person who deserved to eat it.
This had a deep impact on the king. He realised the illusory nature of worldly attachments, and immediately handed over the reigns of the kingdom to his successor and became a hermit.
He wrote the great Vairagya Shataka after his Neeti and Sringar Shatakas. In this text, he expatiates on the illusion this world is and how to conduct oneself in one's quest for spirituality.

Religion and spirituality important to mental health treatment, says MP
9:19am Wednesday 22nd May 2013 in News By Mark Smith, Politics reporter
TACKLING mental health problems in ethnic minorities should take religion and spirituality into account, Bolton South East MP Yasmin Qureshi has told the Commons.
Speaking during a Parliamentary debate, Ms Qureshi claimed mental health issues among black and ethnic minority communities were often not diagnosed properly, saying they could struggle to access appropriate treatment which was culturally sensitive.
Ms Qureshi told the Commons: Members touched on mental health issues in black and minority ethnic communities.
I will mention that as well because, in addition to a number of barriers, such as jobs, stigma and rejection by family and friends, they also face the barrier of accessing appropriate care and treatment that is also culturally sensitive.
Although it is accepted that there is nothing genetically that makes people from black and minority ethnic groups more vulnerable to mental health issues, often those issues are not diagnosed properly.
She also said psychiatry should take a more rounded view, taking into account religion and spirituality of the people being treated, rather than always taking a purely medical approach.
Ms Qureshi added: Psychiatry in the United Kingdom, understandably, is based on the Western understanding of mental illness and often medical models are used to treat it, but in fact mental health means different things to different people from different cultures and different communities, and they can be affected by many different issues, such as spiritual, religious and background issues.
Those might relate, for example, to the countries they have come from.
