Does religious freedom report need more ‘teeth’?

Analysis Washington, D.C.

The Obama administration isnt afraid to call out Republicans for playing politics on Capitol Hill, or Wall Street for runaway profits or insurance companies for health care woes.

But why, when it comes to protecting religious freedom abroad, is the State Department so hesitant to name names?

Watchdogs say the State Department missed a key opportunity to put teeth into its annual assessment of global religious freedom, which was released by Secretary of State John Kerry Monday.

Continuing a pattern begun under President George W. Bush, the report does not include a new list of countries of particular concern, or CPCs the diplomatic term for countries that either actively suppress religious freedom or dont do enough to protect it.

The list varies little from year to year North Korea, Iran, China and a handful of others are routinely cited as the worst offenders. But the new report contains no worst-of-the-worst list that would single out offenders for sanctions or other punishment.

The lack of new CPC designations in the report is a big flaw, according to Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va., the dean of religious liberty watchdogs on Capitol Hill.

As religious freedom conditions continue to deteriorate globally, it is more important than ever that the State Department use this vital tool to press governments to end abuses, protect their citizens and respect this fundamental human right, said Wolf and two other congressmen who fired off a letter to Kerry on Monday.

Their concern was echoed by others who monitor religious liberty abroad, including the U.S. Commission on Religious Freedom, the independent body created by Congress that each year puts out its own list of worst violators.

Knox Thames, USCIRFs director of policy and research, said the commission believes that the 1998 law that mandates the State Department report also requires new designations of CPCs annually. The current CPC list dates from 2011.

STANLEY, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

DSM Dyneema LLC (DSM Dyneema), the manufacturer of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMwPE) fiber, branded as Dyneema, and world leader in life protection materials and high performance fibers, congratulates Slingmax and ASC Industries on their role in the crowning of One World Trade Center, Freedom Tower, with the use of Slingmax Twin-Path High Performance Slings. Made with Dyneema fiber, the slings were used last week to cradle the spire, and carefully lift it into place at the peak of the building. The addition of the magnificent 408-foot silver spire brought Freedom Tower to its full height, a symbolic 1,776 feet, making Freedom Tower the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

Slingmaxs Twin-Path High Performance Slings are made of a blend of high performance fibers, a large part Dyneema, and are the most advanced slings on the market today. They fuse state-of-the-art materials with proprietary technology to create a product of unprecedented safety and performance. As a supplier to Slingmax and their worldwide dealers, DSM Dyneema is proud of their partners role in this historic and patriotic moment for the United States of America. DSM Dyneema thanks Slingmax for their trust in using Dyneema in these state-of-the-art roundslings.

We are honored to have been a part of the construction of One World Trade Center, an iconic symbol of American strength and resilience, through our partners Slingmax and ASC Industries, said Christian Widdershoven, Vice President Marketing & Sales, DSM Dyneema Business Group. After the terrible events of 9/11, DSM Dyneema supplied fiber and sheet materials to its customers for the manufacture of ballistic protection products for troops, homeland security and other emergency responders. Today, we are immensely pleased to have played a role in the construction of a symbol of triumph over those dark events, a historic moment for America and the world.

In addition to the lightweight strength of Dyneema fiber, unsurpassed abrasion resistance and low stretch properties, Slingmax roundslings offer the Check-Fast Inspection System that warns users of overload conditions before damage occurs, fiber optic inspection to detect early warning signs of damage, redundant protection delivered by two independently functioning slings in one, unique length tolerances of less than one percent, and unmatched repairability. More than 90 percent of damaged TPXC slings can be repaired.

All these features, combined with Slingmaxs role in crowning the Freedom Tower give new meaning to the brand promise of Dyneema: With you when it matters.

Freedom Split Doubleheader with Schaumburg

May 22, 2013 - Frontier League (FL) Florence Freedom The Florence Freedom split a double header with the Schaumburg Boomers tonight at University of Cincinnati Medical Center Stadium. The Freedom won game one 2-0 and lost game two 2-1.

In game one, the Freedom got a very strong outing from starting pitcher Daniel Jensen (SHO, W, 1,0) who threw a complete game shutout in the seven inning game, allowing just five hits and striking out six while not walking a batter.

The Freedom offense got things started in the first inning. Shortstop Junior Arrojo would lead off with a hit by pitch and would score later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by leftfielder David Harris. That would be all the offense Jensen would need.

The Freedom would add one more run off of Boomers starter Mike Giovenco (L, 0-1) in the second inning on an RBI fielder's choice by Freedom catcher Jim Jacquot.

In game two, it would be the Freedom bats that would be held down by four different Boomers pitchers. Right-hander Chris Phelan went three shutout innings in spot starting duty, allowing just four hits and walking one.

Schaumburg would score first in the top of inning number one on a solo home run by third baseman Frank Pfister.

Matt Kuna (W, 2-0) would come in to pitch the fourth inning and would throw two scoreless, hitless innings to pick up the win in relief.

The Boomers would tack on an insurance run in the sixth off of Freedom starter Jason Wilson (L, 0-1) on an RBI single by left fielder Chad Mozingo to push the lead to 2-0.

The run would turn out to be an important one as the Freedom would threaten in the ninth against Boomers closer James Jones. Jones gave up a pinch-hit home run to Jim Jacquot with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead in half. Junior Arrojo would follow with a single before Jones would leave with an injury. James Bierlein (S, 2) would enter and hit second baseman Eric Groff but would get left fielder David Harris to ground out to end the game.

The Freedom and Boomers will meet again tomorrow in the rubber match of the three game series. First pitch is at 6:35 and the UCMC stadium gates open one hour earlier at 5:35. The first 1,000 fans will receive a Manti Te'o fake girlfriend bobblehead for tomorrow's thirsty Thursday game featuring $1 beers, sodas and ice cream. Tickets are available at the UCMC stadium box office or by phone at (859) 594-HITS.

Freedom Elementary revisits 1988

WEST CHESTER TWP.

Excitement was palpable as Freedom Elementary students gathered for the opening of their schools time capsule.

In celebration of Freedoms 25th anniversary, various school activities were held this week catered around the capsules opening. Scavenger hunts, trivia and educational games were among the activities as students learned what it was like to live in 1988.

On Wednesday, 630 students crowded in the gym of the school on Beckett Ridge Boulevard in West Chester Twp. waiting for an event 25 years in the making.

Throughout the assembly, Freedom principal Sabrina Hubert and the five guest speakers stressed that one major difference between 2013 and 1988: technology.

The kids are so use to having electronics that not having them is a foreign concept, she said.

Gasps of horror filled the gym as second-grade teacher Amy Johns explained film reels, overhead projectors and VCRs to the students.

David Tobergte, Freedoms first principal, colored students imaginations with his description of the school building when it first opened. During its first year the floors were made of dirt as the building was not completely finished. Shower curtains were used for bathroom stalls and the kids had to eat lunch in their classrooms.

It was like a campout, but everyone thought it was an adventure, said Tobergte.

Newspaper articles written about Freedom, ribbons from the first field day, letters and drawings from every class, and a signed original copy of the schools song, Let Freedom Ring, were among the containers contents. A cassette recording of students singing the school song was also discovered.
