Freedom parks

Two Mindanao-based legislators are pushing for the creation of "freedom parks," which they said would provide people with a venue for public assemblies sans the usual permit requirement.

Rep. Rufus Rodriguez (2nd District, Cagayan de Oro City) said that through House Bill 1065 or the Public Assembly Act, the creation of freedom parks all over the country will be institutionalized.

A freedom park is defined by the bill as "any place or location such as parks, roads, public buildings, and premises where public assemblies are usually held in which no permit is required for the holding of the same."

Rep. Maximo Rodriguez Jr. (Party-list, Abante Mindanao), Rep. Rufus' brother, served as the other author of the bill.

The measure provides that procession, rallies, parades, demonstrations, public meetings and assemblages for religious purposes shall be governed by local ordinances.

"But such ordinances shall only regulate the time, place and location of the proposed mass action and shall not in any way deny the lawful exercise of such right," Rodriguez said.

The Transnational Government of TamilEelam declared Tamil Eelam Freedom Charter on on May 18, 2013.

Tamil groups from around the world, coordinated by the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE), initiated the process of drafting the Freedom Charter, through extensive consultation from Tamils worldwide.

Aspiring to take the Vaddukoddai Resolution forward as theTGTEmoves towards realizing its goal, and taking inspiration from Britains Magna Carta, the Freedom Charter of the African National Congress (ANC) as well as the Palestinian National Charter, the Tamil Eelam Freedom Charterwill enshrine the Freedom Demands of the people.thePrime MinisterVisuvanathan Rudrakumaran said.

In the historic city of Lancaster (Pennsylvania, U.S.A) the birth place of Thaddens Stevens, the immortal 19th century egalitarian and a leading champion for the emancipation proclamation, the Prime Minister of the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam, Rt . Hon. Viswanathan Rudrakumaran solemnly unveiled the Tamil Eelam Freedom Charter in the presence of a host of academics, Human Rights activists, legal luminaries, TGTE MPs and Senators, political pundits, and professionals from Norway to Australia and India to Italy were present at this historic event.

Enumerating the cardinal principles of the Tamilnationhood, historic homelands with the Right of self-determination, the Prime Minister eloquently read out the proclamation consisting of 21 articles of freedom

A two day International Academic conference exploring the means to realize the legitimate political aspirations of the Tamils of Eelam was held prior to the proclamation of the Freedom Charter. Professor Francis Boyle a leading advocate for Freedom to the oppressed national communities was the resource person at this conference at which Prof. Josef Alkatout (Germany), Prof. Peter Schalk (Sweden), Prof. Manivannan (Chennai), Prof. Sornarajah (London), Dr. David Suntha (UK), Prof. David Matas (Canada), Prof. Frederic Fapanni (Switzerkland) Prof. Chandrakanthan (Canada), Dr. Paul Newman (Bangalore), Prof. Saraswathy (Chennai) and Prof. James Summer (UK) Prof. N. Sriskandarajah (Sweden), Dr. Brian Senaviratne (Australia), Mrs. Usha Sriskandarajah (Canada), Mr. V. Thankavelu (Canada), Dr. Nimmi Gowrinathan, (Canada) presented research papers on an array of topics related to the Conference theme.

Following the proclamation of the freedom charter Dr. Nuran Nabi a freedom fighter once considered the brain behind the Bangladesh Mukti Bahini, Dr. Ramsay Clark, former attorney General of the USA and Hon. LONG Live Press Freedom.

There was a time in our history when Filipinos had no right whatsoever to speak freely or to write his opinions any time of day. This was during the Spanish regime when everyone was forbidden to express whatever is in his heart whether it violates anything or not. Such precious right was not available to us and any resistance to such order of the higher ups would mean death by a firing squad.

Some Filipinos defied the deadly restrictions and a lot of them were killed or found themselves running into the hills. It was a capital punishment that we accepted for many years.

It was cruelty in the highest order which we could not accept. That was utterly one of the reasons why our forefathers had to revolt against Spain to be able to pass to the succeeding generation the rights of people to exist and entitlement to various freedoms necessary for existence.

We shed blood. We ran to the battlefield to struggle for our freedom and today after more than four centuries of struggle, we were granted our precious freedom, more particularly freedom of speech or expression. The struggle was long and deadly. History lost counts of the number of people who succumbed for us this generation could enjoy.

Today as we celebrate press freedom, we see the beauty and wonders of such a right. We can write anything even the slightest heartbeat of our body and even to express what our soul desires.

Though, democracy has also its limit. We have laws duly established to control our urges and desires. Freedom is not absolute and we are told of its tenets boundaries. Notwithstanding its restrictions, we still feel the love to write within the bounds of the law.

There is the check and balance in our government. We belong to the fourth estate and there is much respect bestowed upon us by our government and people. Being in our situation, there is so much honor and prestige, matters that made us look up and proud.

I have been in the media for some time and truly I enjoyed so much my right. I made use of such privileges as presenting my opinions, my criticisms on things and even put on a pedestal the value of what I think is right. I enjoyed with my colleagues in the media and my great respect too to their way of presenting their personal lives and beliefs.

There is no better way to appreciate the wonder of the words than to express ourselves toward its existence. But there is so much risk in the media. You get threats regularly. Your mind continuously waits for the end of life or when an assassin comes your way and fire.

MANILA, Philippines Freedom comes in many forms. Music is one of them.

Musikalayaan: A Celebration of Musical Freedom was organized by recent Ateneo graduates for the young inmates of the National Bilibid Prison on Monday, May 27.

The benefit concert aimed to raise funds to buy musical instruments for the young detainees. It was held in partnership with the Ateneo Musicians Pool (AMP), who provided technical consultation and performers for the event.

The groups leader, Arvin Boller, said that the group came out with the project after their immersion in the National Bilibid Prison.

While we were there, we saw in them a passion to learn. Despite their isolation and their limited options in prison, they still try to do something productive, Boller said.

Boller added that the youth detainees have side projects in the prison. Aside from studying, the detainees also sing, dance and make music.

Nung last day naminnakausap namin sila. Marami sa kanila sobrang passionate about music and the arts, yung tipong paglabas, marami sa kanilang gusting maging rocker o maging performer, Boller noted. (During our last day, we talked with some of them and we found out that many of them were passionate about music and the arts. After serving their time, some of them want to be rockstars and performers.)
