Freedom Hill Amphitheatre's comeback kicks off with Huey Lewis and the News; venue closed in 2009

DETROIT, MI - Huey Lewis and the News will perform Tuesday night at Freedom Hill Amphitheatre to kick off this Sterling Heights outdoor concert venue's season.

The band will likely play its hit tune "Back in Time," but Freedom Hill's new ownership group has every reason to look forward. This venue is now open for the first time in nearly four years.

After more than $2 million worth of upgrades, Freedom Hill kicks off a busy concert season that includes at least 30 acts and is headlined by Lady Antebellum on June 13. That show is sold out.

"We're going to take Freedom Hill to the next level," said Joe Vicari, of Andiamo Restaurant Group, part of a new ownership/management group with Tom Celani of Luna Entertainment.

Vicari made that statement in December during a press conference announcing Freedom Hill's re-opening, and appears determined to give patrons a visitor-friendly experience.

Vicari's business partner, Tom Celani of Luna Entertainment, said in the same press conference visitors to the "new" Freedom Hill will get "an experience," not just a concert.

"It's not just about getting great bands on stage," Celani said.

All Freedom Hill events are booked by AEG Live, one of the world's leaders and entertainment and event booking.

There appears to be a market for smaller venues, one Vicari believes Freedom Hill can capitalize on because of its intimate 7,200 seating capacity.

"The acts are looking for smaller venues," Vicari said. "Obviously if they can fill a stadium, they're going to. But there are a lot of (acts), they go to DTE; there's 5,000 people there and it looks lost.

Singapore Says Website Licensing Does Not Curtail Online Freedom

The Singapore governments regulation introduced last week to license news websites does not impede individuals freedom of expression online, a minister said.

The regulation, an extension of the rules governing print media, is aimed at managing content of news sites mostly run by the same parent companies, Tan Chuan-Jin, Singapores acting minister for manpower, said in a televised panel discussion on Channel NewsAsia, the countrys biggest broadcaster.

The city-states Media Development Authority said certain websites including one run by Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO) must get a license and pay a S$50,000 ($40,000) bond to be forfeited if it publishes prohibited contentthat undermines racial or religious harmony. The move has drawn the ire of opposition groups who said it could impede the free flow of information and development of media in the country.

A lot of the public concern revolves around not just regulations, but is my space being constrained and can I continue to say what I want to say, Tan said. My message is that you should carry on and we would be poorer for it if we deprive Singaporeans of that space.

The regulation wont include the social media or blogs unless they become news sites, he said.

Singapore dropped 14 places in a 2013 press freedom index published by Reporters Without Borders, ranking 149 out of 179 countries. The MDA said 10 websites will fall under the new licensing rules from June 1, and that others will be notified when they meet the criteria.

Other sites on the list include those run by Singapore Press Holdings Ltd. (SPH) and MediaCorp Pte, the countrys two biggest media companies. Singapore Press Chairman Lee Boon Yang was a former information minister, while MediaCorp, the operator of Channel NewsAsia, is owned by Temasek Holdings Pte, the state-owned investment company.

Online news sites must have individual licenses if they report an average of at least one weekly article on the islands news and current affairs over a period of two months, and have at least 50,000 unique visitors from Singapore each month over that period, the MDA had said.
