Use This Eastern Medicine To Trick Your Body Into Relaxing Instantly

In her bookSuccess Under Stress, Melnick shares how we can useEastern medicinea variety ofmovement, stretching postures, breathing and meditationto reground ourselves throughout the day.She explains how "shortcut"Naam Yogatechniques can help move you into a confident, relaxed state, no matter what's going on around you.

Try these four tricks to feel more relaxed, less scared and confident enough to finally solve that pressing problem.

1. Calm Yourself. If you need to control aphysical reaction and reduce anxietyfor example, if you start to get nervous during a presentationyou can "reset" yourself by applying pressure to a point between your second and third knuckles (near where your finger and hand meets). Melnick tells us that if you move your thumb down your middle finger toward your palm, you will be able to feel a soft, slightly indented spot, which is on the inside of your finger if your palm is facing up, and if you apply medium pressure here, "it activates anerve that loosens the area around the heart, so any of that fluttery feeling you feel when you're nervous will end up going away."

Sharon Melnick

2. Be More Confident. Even confident people need a boost every now and again. To gain confidence, take either hand to touch your thumb to the side of your index finger between the first (closest to your fingernail) and second knuckles (in the middle of your finger)and apply mild to moderate pressure. When you apply pressure to this point, you are activating a nerve that relates to having charisma and feeling powerful, meaning you are sending a signal that can "reduce internal emotional commotion and induce a state that is subtly more confident."

Sharon Melnick

3. Abolish Fear.Fear can paralyze us in both business and life. To cope with fear, try this: First, place both hands in a position where the tips of the thumb and index finger are together (the way you'd hold your fingers in a yoga lotus pose). Then, each time you breathe out through your mouth, forcefully push your hands away from you, and when you inhale through your nose, bring your hands in a straight line toward your chest.

4. Solve a Problem. If there's a particularly sticky problem you're trying to find a solution for, try this "problem solving position."With your right hand, touch your thumb with your index and middle fingers and place the "tip" of that triangle about one inch above the point that is directly between your eyes on your forehead. Simultaneously, have the fingertips of your left hand in that same position, but place the "tip" of that triangle about an inch above your belly button.

COLUMBUS Liberty-Bentons Alex DeVincentis and Liz Streaker arrived at the Division II state track meet looking to push each other in the discus competition.

The Eagles seniors did just that and it led to DeVincentis claiming the state championship with a winning throw of 134 feet, 5 inches on Friday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Streaker finished a close third with a throw measuring 128-8. Chardon Notre Dame Cathedral-Latins Kendra Zbinovec earned the runner-up spot with a throw traveling 128-9.

The Eastwood boys will run in the 400 and 1600 relay finals, and hurdler Devin Snowden still has hopes for an individual title.

Isaiah Conkle, Devin Snowden, Brennan Seifert, and Steven Bruning posted a swift time of 43.65 in a preliminary 400 heat before Gabe Fredericks, Joey Salinas, Derek Snowden, and Devin Snowden earned a finals lane in the 1600 relay after posting a time of 3:22.37 in a preliminary race.

Devin Snowden passed up Elidas anchor leg, Quentin Poling, during the final 50 meters to cross the finish line first for the Eagles in the second preliminary heat.

I saw him look back like he think hes got it, and I just thought Ive got to keep going, Devin Snowden said, of his strong kick to finish out his leg of the 1600 relay.

Devin Snowden is a finalist in the 300 hurdles after posting the second-fastest preliminary heat time (38.73).

Liberty Global chief Mike Fries sees broadband speeds going up and prices coming down

In his first interview since its $23bn takeover of Virgin Media (NasdaqGS: VMED - news) , the CEO of Liberty Global (NasdaqGS: LBTYA - news) tells Andrew Cave how the group will take on Britains big players.

In between announcing and completing Liberty Globals takeover of Virgin Media , chief executive Mike Fries has somehow found time for another job.

Im the lead singer in a CEO rock band, he laughs. Weve raised more than $2m for charity. We just played with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and raised $850,000 in one night with a 'Bach to Rock concert.

The band is called The Moderators and is made up of other Denver-based business executives who first performed at a Christmas party five years ago.

We do it for fun, says Fries, 50. We do songs from U2, classic stuff from the Stones and Van Morrison and [the] 1980s stuff like Billy Idol. Its a real eclectic mix and you know the words to every song. We dont take risks.

That seems to be the mantra for the Virgin Media takeover, too. Liberty, which is based in Denver, Colorado, is paying $23.3bn (15bn).

However, in his first major interview since the deal completed at the end of last month, Fries stresses it will be business as usual.

Its about continuing the organic growth story Virgin has achieved, he says. Were not going to come in and mess with all the things that are working well.

Secondly, its about creating synergies out of the scale the deal provides because of our ability to centralise some things like programme acquisition and procurement of equipment and technology. Those two items alone represent probably $5m of expenditure a year.

About 16pc of Virgin Medias revenues comes from business-to-business sales, much more than in Libertys other European businesses. Virgin Media also has 3m mobile subscribers in the UK something Liberty doesnt have elsewhere in Europe.

Dream defeat Liberty, remain unbeaten

The Dream jumped to an early double-digit lead and never let up en route to a 75-56 thumping of the New York Liberty on Friday to improve to 4-0 on the season in front of 6,173 fans. Three of the Dreams four wins have been by double-digits.

We came out at the beginning with a game plan of trying to establish ourselves on the offensive end by running, Dream coach Fred Williams said. We wanted to get out in the passing lanes, and some of that created our offense in transition.

Angel McCoughtry stuffed the stat sheet for the Dream with a double-double, scoring 15 points and tying a career-high with 10 assists. She also had five rebounds and six steals.

Shes been working hard in practice, Williams said. Shes really a player that is trying to develop more passing to her teammates and going to the boards. If she continues that, its only going to make the team better.

Sancho Lyttle had a game-high 18 points, shooting a stellar 80 percent (8-of-10) from the floor. Erika DeSouza added 13 points and snatched six rebounds.

Williams credits the teams hot start to team chemistry.

I think its the overall practice we do and how they like playing with each other, Williams said. Thats evident in the combination of passes and having 20 assists per game. They really work hard in practice, and we get them prepared. I like a team to have a lot of energy, and that is what they are giving me right now.

The Dream again struggled for the 3-point line, shooting 21 percent (3-of-14) from behind the arc. But the Dream masks its lack of perimeter shooting by getting out in transition for layups. On defense, the Dream forced the Liberty into shooting 12.5 percent (1-of-8) on 3-point shots.

Kara Braxton was the only Liberty player in double figures, with 14 points and six rebounds. Alex Montgomery grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Liberty had 19 turnovers, which led to 14 Dream points.

Libertarians says their message resonates locally, ready to compete in City Council race

"Liberty is local" was a recurring theme of speakers today at the inaugural convention of the Genesee County Libertarian Party.

Some 30 people gathered Homestead Event Center in the Batavia City Centre to ratify the party's charter and nominate the party's first two candidates for office.

Jim Rosenbeck and Lisa Whitehead will be on the November ballot as candidates for at-large seats on the Batavia City Council.

"The Genesee County Libertarian Party is going to represent trust, transparency and truth," said Phil Ricci, party chairman. "We're not going to tell you what to think. If you disagree with our position, we will try to educate you on why we believe what we believe. The Republicans and Democrats will tell you that we're on the fringe, but we will show people we're on the local level, we're here to represent you."

Guest speakers included Drew Beeman, Greater Rochester Libertarian Party chairman, attorney Paul Wolf (first inset), and Mark Axinn (second inset), chairman of the New York Libertarian Party.

Beeman congratulated the Genesee County libertarians for coming together with an energy and numbers that is unique to the region.

His group represents all of the counties surrounding Rochester and he said he would welcome more counties breaking way and forming their own parties. It will take that kind of energy, he said, to reverse the trend statewide and in the nation to constrain individual liberty.

"Gary Johnson got one present of vote," Beeman said. "Are you going to have a Libertarian Party president any time soon? Probably not. But we could have a Batavia City Council member. We could have a school board member. Liberty is local."

Picking up on Ricci's comment about the propaganda of the major parties to portray libertarians as on the political fringe, Beeman noted that when you sit down and talk with people about their views of individual liberty, they actually believe what the Libertarian Party believes.
