Freedom Drop Series Finale to Traverse City, 8-5

June 13, 2013 - Frontier League (FL) Florence Freedom A late rally for the Freedom fell short in the series finale against the Traverse City Beach Bums by a score of 8-5 Thursday night at University of Cincinnati Medical Center Stadium.

The Beach Bums wasted no time jumping on top, scoring a pair of runs in the first on a two-run single by first baseman Chase Burch off of Freedom starter Jason Wilson (L, 1-3).

Florence would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first on a solo home run by left fielder David Harris. The blast was Harris's league-leading sixth of the year and pulled the Freedom to within a run at 2-1.

From there, Traverse City took off. The Beach Bums extended the lead to 4-1 in the third on a two-run homer by Zach Kometani.

They would add another run in the fifth and two more in the sixth on a two-run triple by Kometani staking starter Jacob Clem (W, 3-3) to a 7-1 lead. Kometani would end the game a single shy of the cycle, driving in five runs.

The Freedom would begin to rally back in the seventh, scoring on an RBI double by Pablo Bermudez that cut the lead to 7-2.

However, Traverse City would answer right back with another run in the top of the eighth to make it 8-2.

The Freedom continued to claw their way back in the bottom of the eighth, cutting the lead to 8-5 after Jeremy Hamilton singled home two runs.

The Freedom would get no closer as Matt Miller (S, 3) would get J.C. Figueroa to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game and give the Beach Bums a series win.

The Freedom's six game home stand continues tomorrow, when the Freedom host the Frontier Greys in game one of a three game set. First pitch is at 6:35 with the UCMC Stadium gates opening one hour earlier at 5:35. Tickets are available at the UCMC Stadium box office or by calling (859) 594-HITS. Overheard at the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s ‘Road to Majority Conference’

Here at the Faith and Freedom Coalition's "Road to the Majority Conference," you know the audience agrees with a point a speaker is making if there are shouts of "amen." They're here, as the Coalition's chairman Ralph Reed says, not to learn how "to preach to the choir," but rather make the message spread. They're here to fight against the idea that the message of a shrinking faith-based coalition and acceptance of secular ideas such as gay marriage are both inevitable.

Even though there are common refrains of "we are not the fringe" not all the speakers are on the same page. Take Michele Bachmann. In her speech, she took pains to mention how giving undocumented immigrants amnesty will hurt our poorest and tax the system. Jeb Bush said just about the opposite, citing how fertility rates in the country have dropped, and that immigrants can be an engine of growth.

Here's a running thread of some ideas and positions taken at the conference. We'll keep updating as they come in:

On immigration:

This would be one thing the average illegal alien that comes into the United States, the average age is 34 years old, the average education level is about 10th grade. That's not to demean on the person coming in to the United States for a lack of education. But it isn't prudent to think that if you are 34 years of age with a 10th grade education or less, it's tough to believe that that person will be paying more in taxes than they will be receiving in benefits.

The people who will suffer the most, if we move forward, in my mind, with what is a very foolish action the people who will hurt the most are Hispanics and African Americans who already suffer very high levels of unemployment.

Freedom Hold off Greys to Win Opener, 4-3

June 14, 2013 - Frontier League (FL) Florence Freedom The Florence Freedom held off a late rally by the Frontier Greys to take game one of a three-game series at University of Cincinnati Medical Center Stadium by a final score of 4-3.

Byron Wiley got the Freedom off and rolling in the second inning with a solo home run off of Greys' knuckleballer Joe Zeller (L, 3-3) to put the Freedom on top 1-0 after two innings.

The Freedom would add a run in the fourth as Zeller's knuckleballer would get away from his catcher and allow David Harris to score on the wild pitch, pushing the lead to 2-0.

Florence would double the lead to four in the fifth inning. Harris would drive in a run with a single and two batters later, Jacob Tanis would bring Harris around to score with a double and extend the lead to 4-0.

That was all the run support Freedom starter Michael Oros would need. Oros (W, 2-0) would allow just one unearned run over six innings, striking out five while allowing just four hits.

The Greys would attempt to rally back, scoring once in the sixth and twice more in the seventh on a two-run double by pinch-hitter Mike Gallick to cut the Freedom lead to 4-3.

But the Freedom bullpen would hold. Brandon Mathes pitched a scoreless eighth and Jorge Marban (S, 5) came on in the ninth and retired the side in order to notch his fifth save of the season. Marban received some help from his shortstop Junior Arrojo who made a sliding over the shoulder catch in shallow centerfield to end the game.

The Freedom and Greys will be back in action tomorrow night for game two of this three game set. First pitch at UCMC Stadium is at 6:05 with gates opening one hour earlier at 5:05. Tickets are available at the UCMC Stadium ticket office or by phone at (859) 594-HITS. The game can also be heard on 1320-AM WCVG and online at gospel1320.com. Freedom Specialty Insurance Company® Introduces the Freedom Lease Protection Plansm Policy

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Freedom Specialty Insurance Company continues to identify new product opportunities that offer a competitive advantage for its brokers clients with the release of the Freedom Lease Protection Plansm policy. The plan is designed to indemnify multifamily property owners and managers (POMs) against collection losses from tenant defaults. POMs can use the coverage as a means to eliminate traditional security deposit collection, administration and liability. This allows for an increase in tenant demand and occupancy, leading to the ultimate benefit to POMs of the potential for significant improvement in net operating income versus losses incurred in a security deposit program.

The Freedom Lease Protection Plansm is another example of how Freedom Specialty is expanding in the specialty liability market, said John Lopes, vice president of Programs at Freedom Specialty. It is an opportunity for us to provide an innovative solution to the multifamily housing markets collection loss problem and provide a tool that POMs can use to improve their businesses performance.

Freedom Specialty has partnered with Lease Data Solutions (LDS), an information services company serving the real estate, insurance and finance industries, to conduct data analysis services. LDSs proprietary technology and algorithms evaluate POMs asset use, management practices and operations management. Lopes noted that policyholders receive the regular portfolio performance analysis and technical support from LDS. We believe this strategic partnership will strengthen our underwriting platform and give our policyholders an added benefit that will add significant value to their portfolio management.

The plan is designed to cover losses incurred by POMs when tenants default on their obligations under a qualified lease. Covered losses include:

Kickstarter campaign seeks to create cyborg cockroaches

While the RoboRoach is not a real-life Terminator, the company behind the electro-bug, Backyard Brains, is touting it as the first commercially available cyborg. They're looking to raise $10,000, via a Kickstarter campaign, to manufacture these insect-machines.

A cyborg is short for "cybernetic organism" and has both organic and cybernetic parts. That's exactly what the RoboRoach is; part electronic robot, part real-live cockroach.

The design was created by the Backyard Brains, which is a start-up group of scientists who focus on creating neuroscience projects for students.

The RoboRoach works by innervating neurons in the cockroach's antennae with small electrical impulses that are controlled via the RoboRoach smartphone app. Cockroaches use their antennae to feel and even smell the world around them, so they are ultimately guided through their surroundings by these body parts.

The cockroach has a small surgery to implant a "backpack." The pack initiates an electrical signal to the cockroach's antennae to trick the cockroach into thinking that there is an obstacle in its way.

"Our RoboRoach App allows the user the ability to steer the cockroach left or right by a simple swipe of the screen in the direction he or she wants to stimulate," explained Backyard Brain's RoboRoach production manager Bill Reith in an email to CBSNews.com. "Additionally, the user can learn and engage in real life science by experimenting with different frequencies, durations, and pulse widths of the neural stimulation."

While they're using real roaches, Reith explains that it doesn't hurt or harm the insect -- in this case a Blaberus discoidalis, or simply discoids, which are native to South America. The roaches grow up to three inches long and cannot climb up smooth surfaces or fly, even though they have wings as an adult.

"It's nearly impossible to adapt to something painful, but these roaches adapt quite quickly, which makes us believe that this is simply causing sensory neurons to fire," explained Reith. "Also, cockroaches have a defined response when they are scared or hurt (they throw up), but we've not seen that."

Reith also said that once the backpack is removed, the insect can continue to eat, breed and live out a normal cockroach life.
