Charlotte leaders inaugurate UTC Aerospace HQ

Politicians and business leaders touted growth Friday at UTC Aerospace Systems, the new incarnation of the former Charlotte-based Goodrich Corp., which United Technologies Corp. acquired last year.

Lured in part by state and local incentives, the company combined many of its business operations in Charlotte after its $18.4 billion acquisition of Goodrich. UTC moved dozens of high-ranking employees from Connecticut to Charlotte.

As a result, company officials said payroll at its Charlotte division headquarters has increased from 160 to 250, with plans to increase to more than 300 in the coming years. The company also went from using three floors of its office building to all six.

Sweating in the summer heat, officials spoke outside companys West Tyvola Road offices at a ceremony to formally inaugurate the new business division.

You could have gone right across the border. I know that, said Gov. Pat McCrory, pointing towards South Carolina. We have to have these kinds of companies, that build things, that design things, that make things.

UTC Aerospace Systems makes components for aircraft and spacecraft throughout the world. The companys components go into jets made by Boeing, Airbus, Bombardier, helicopters for the U.S. Marines and the International Space Station, among others.

After UTC acquired Goodrich, formerly one of the Fortune 500 companies headquartered in Charlotte, the company moved about 75 of its Hamilton Sundstrand employees to Charlotte from Connecticut to form UTC Aerospace Systems.

The Hartford Courant reported that, with an average compensation of $290,000, the managers represented nearly $22 million worth of annual payroll.

Economic development officials said UTC also considered locating the division headquarters in South Carolina, Florida and Virginia. Incentives helped UTC make its decision. Former Gov. Bev Perdue was in office at the time.

The company received a $2.5 million grant from the state, $2.5 million in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County grants, and up to $16.5 million worth of additional state grants over the next 12 years, contingent on meeting job creation and investment targets.

Gov’t to tighten rules on stem cell therapy

By Michael Lim Ubac Philippine Daily Inquirer

Hospitals offering stem cell therapy have until Aug. 31 to seek or renew their accreditation from the Department of Health (DOH), a Palace official said Friday.

For the information of the public, the DOH is accrediting hospitals for this kind of treatment, and come Aug. 31, these hospitals should file their accreditation requirements (with DOH) for them to continue to offer this treatment, said deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte.

The government is eyeing stricter regulation of hospitals offering stem cell therapy amid speculations that the recent deaths of three politicians were due to the xenogenic (animal-based stem cell) treatment they had received in Germany last year.

Dr. Leo Olarte, president of the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) and spokesperson of the Philippine Society for Stem Cell Medicine, said the groups were still trying to determine whether the politicians had died due to their illness or due to hypersensitivity reaction from the xenogenic stem cells.

Last week, the PMA also warned of a possible scam involving German doctors coming over to perform stem cell therapy on patients in five-star hotels at around P1 million per shot.

Valte echoed a similar warning from the DOH against doctors offering the procedure in their clinics, saying that hospitals, not (individual) doctors, nor stand-alone clinics, are the ones being accredited.

Not a cure all

The Palace official also cautioned the public against claims that stem cell therapy was a cure all (for diseases).

There is no treatment that will cure all of your ills. Much less your love problems, Valte said.

Young students get real-life lessons in science

Published: Thursday, June 27, 2013 at 3:09 p.m. Last Modified: Thursday, June 27, 2013 at 3:09 p.m.

Nineteen students, ages 10 to 15, spent part of their summer vacation in a microbiology lab at the University of Florida, learning about tiny microbes that have a huge impact on humans.

Its something you cant see or hear, but microbes are everywhere, said Arjun Panicker, 13.

The first summer microbiology apprenticeship program at UF was launched by Monika Oli, a professor in the microbiology and cell science department and UFs current Teacher of the Year.

Oli, who has two children of her own, said there arent many opportunities for middle school-aged children to get laboratory experience, which might help draw them into science.

Its important to capture their attention now.

A lot of times, we lose students of that age group, especially girls, she said.

The apprenticeship program was designed to pique students interest in science, but also to show the intersections of science with art, culture and society.

To help make those connections, Oli invited guests to speak to the students, including other microbiology professors, artists and local author Shelley Fraser Mickle.

Above all, the program aimed to teach students real-life lessons about science.
