ASU considers opening medical school

JONESBORO Arkansas State University has selected consultants to study whether the school should open an osteopathic school of medicine.

Tripp Umbach this month will begin studying whether opening a medical school is practical and cost-effective. The firm will make a recommendation to the school's Board of Trustees on whether a program should be authorized.

System president Charles L. Welch this summer gave Chancellor Tim Hudson permission to explore opening a medical school. Hudson said in a statement Monday that osteopathic medical schools can "elevate primary health care across a region, produce tremendous economic impact on communities and raise the prestige level of associated universities."

Trustees will need to explore how the school would be funded, how clinics would be run and whether the school could enter partnerships with any firms, said Jason Penry, the Jonesboro school's vice chancellor for university advancement.

Tripp Umbach has done similar medical education studies in Georgia, Indiana and Michigan.

The Delta Regional Authority last week dedicated $25,000 toward the study.

"We want to make an informed decision," Hudson said. "Along with selecting a feasibility study partner we have also made sure to include doctors of osteopathy here in Arkansas, leading members of professional medical community across the state and the leadership of our local and regional medical facilities in our discussions."

Trustees could be asked to make a decision by the end of the year.

The recently redesigned Harvard Medical School's Family Van

By Patrick D. Rosso, Town Correspondent

The Harvard Medical School's Family Van recently got a new look thanks to a student from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

Jarmila Houstova, a senior at MassaArt, was the one who came up with the new design for the vehicle that travels throughout Boston providing free preventative health services, according to a release from the school.

The new design, which incorporates vivid colors and imaginative imagery, was unveiled at a recent community ceremony.

The design came out of a collaboration between The Family Van, MassArt's Graphic Design program, and MassArt's Center for Art and Community Partnerships.

The project, which started in August 2012, included students from Professor Elizabeth Resnick's Graphic Design 2 class.

After four weeks and a number of designs, the projects were presented and after a vote a final design was chosen.

Liberty Heights Fresh celebrates 20 years in Salt Lake City

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Liberty Heights Fresh Tuesday, August 27, 2013, in Salt Lake City.

Steven Rosenberg can easily describe the cold pasteurization process that makes the Rosehill Dairy milk sold at Liberty Heights Fresh so sweet. And the stores self-titled Chief Eating Officer has seen the red angus cattle herd in Altamont, the sole fresh beef he sells, and knows the only grain they eat would be the seeds off a wild grass head.

But it is before the wall of extra virgin olive oil where the 53-year-old distills his food philosophy.

Liberty Heights Celebrates

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Liberty Heights Fresh is offering 20 percent off every item in the store, from Sept. 4-23. Daily deals will start Sept. 5. The store also will host an open house and festival with free tastings from local artisan food producers.

When Friday, Sept. 6, 4-8 p.m., and Saturday, Sept. 7, 3-8 p.m.

Where Liberty Heights Fresh, 1290 S. 1100 East, Salt Lake City; 801-467-2434.

The best olive oil is pressed as the fruit starts to turn from green to purple, he says. Thats also the time olives have the least oil to give.

This emphasis on quality over quantity and charging top dollar for it is the hallmark of the Salt Lake City specialty market that is celebrating its 20th anniversary this month.

Liberty Tax Service Offers Same-Sex Marriage Tax Return Amendments at No Cost

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA--(Marketwired - Aug 30, 2013) - Liberty Tax Service, a subsidiary of JTH Holding, Inc. (NASDAQ: TAX), will amend 2010 and 2011 federal tax returns for same-sex, married couples for free. The Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Department of Treasury announced yesterday that they will treat same-sex couples, legally married in jurisdictions that recognize their marriages, as married for federal tax purposes. Effective September 16, the ruling stands even for those couples who do not reside in the jurisdiction where they were married.

Those in same-sex marriages could possibly benefit from amending their federal tax return for the past three years. Same-sex couples who were legally married in a prior tax year, regardless of where they were married, will qualify for federal amendments. Under the ruling, all federal tax provisions that pertain to marriage are affected, including a couple's filing status, employee benefits, claiming the earned income tax credit, certain deductions and the child tax credit. However, filing an amendment could cost a couple more, so visiting a Liberty Tax preparer is the best course of action.

"This ruling will change how many individuals file their federal tax return in the future. Liberty Tax is ready to assist these couples immediately with their federal tax return amendments and we're happy to do it for free," states Martha O'Gorman, Chief Marketing Officer at Liberty Tax Service.

Liberty High School students enjoy use of personal Macbooks

Posted on: 12:24 pm, September 3, 2013, by John Pepitone, updated on: 12:25pm, September 3, 2013

LIBERTY, Mo. A digital transformation is underway for high school students at Liberty Public Schools. About 3,400 students in are getting laptop computers to use in class and at home throughout the school year.

The laptops are part of the districts effort to be on the cutting edge of education. At Liberty North High School seniors are checked out their new Macbook Air machines.

Educators said they want Liberty students to combine learning from a teacher in the classroom with doing assignments at home, or wherever they are, with a computer.

School leaders say they recognize that colleges are increasing their use of online courses. And they say students need discipline to succeed when working independently. Getting laptops in the classrooms at the high school level will help teens learn to digitally manage and organize whats expected of them.

Last year, the district tested both PCs and Macs. After three pilot classes, students expressed a strong preference for the Apple operating system and its design and features.

Twenty-four hour access for our students is really going to level the playing field and increase their accountability and the reachability of all the lessons they will have both online and face-to-face, said Tara Harvey, blended learning coach at Liberty North.

Liberty is leasing 3,400 Macbooks to provide the technology within its budget. Each student is asked to pay $40 to insure their computer. Those who dont pay for insurance must check out the machine every day from the school library.

The district also understands that not every household has internet access. One day a week there will be a bus leaving late from school, so students can stay and work with their laptops using Wi-Fi at the school.

Liberty Square’s facelift tells site’s full history

Quick links to other pages on this site | Still can't find it? see Site Index File/staffLiberty Square was once Gadsdens Wharf. Buy this photo

When the National Park Service named its downtown Charleston property Liberty Square more than a decade ago, there was little talk of irony behind that name.

The urban park at the eastern tip of Calhoun Street was envisioned as a gateway to the Park Services new Fort Sumter Visitors Education Center, as well as the neighboring South Carolina Aquarium. Its original design contained mostly low-lying tablet markers with quotations from American presidents and other statesmen about liberty and freedom.

Today, the park contains something more additional historic information that shows this site wasnt always synonymous with those two words.

One of the new wayside markers discusses how this property once was Gadsdens Wharf, a bustling commercial node at Charlestons northern end and the primary entry point for African slaves imported into the city during the final quarter century of the nations legal slave trade.

The marker explains that approximately 260,000 African slaves were imported through Charleston before the legal trade ended in 1807 thats 40 percent of all African slaves brought into what is now the United States.

The liberty we talk about in the 21st century is not the liberty granted to everyone 200-300 years ago, said Michael Allen with the National Park Service. Having a conversation puts it in context. So much of our history ties back to colonial days.

Tim Stone, superintendent of the Fort Sumter National Monument, said the recent work was done to identify the property more closely as a National Park unit.

Other new markers explain more about the life of two historic figures already honored at the park the late blacksmith Philip Simmons, who designed its large wrought iron entrance gate, and the late Septima Clark, a civil rights pioneer who is honored here with a fountain. And new banners lead visitors from the street to the aquarium and the boats to Fort Sumter.

We hope it will become much more of an urban oasis where people can come and reflect, Stone said. Our hope is that people who come here say, This is a National Park.

Liberty-Shock Preview

The New York Liberty desperately need a win to lift their fading Eastern Conference playoff hopes. They'll try to earn that when they visit the last-place team in the West.

The Liberty will try to collect only their second victory in seven games Sunday against the Tulsa Shock, losers in six of eight.

New York's chances of making a fourth straight postseason appearance took a big hit Friday with a 73-67 loss to Indiana. The result dropped the Liberty (11-18) to 2 1/2 games behind the Fever for the final playoff spot in the East with five games remaining.

New York was down 21-4 in the first quarter against Indiana before rallying to take a brief lead entering the final period. The Liberty, however, couldn't overcome the Fever's 10-0 run to start that quarter.

"We keep digging ourselves these weird holes," forward/center Kelsey Bone said. "Same result in a loss, but we're fighting. We didn't just lay down. Now we've got to figure out a way to come out strong."

Liberty leading scorer Cappie Pondexter is partly responsible for the team's struggles. Pondexter, scoring 17.3 points per game this season, is averaging 9.4 in her last five contests and shooting 24.2 percent (16 for 66).

Pondexter, who is 17 points shy of 5,000 for her career, had seven points on 1-of-12 shooting against Indiana but made a big shot against Tulsa on May 31. Her jumper with 0.5 seconds left in overtime gave the Liberty a 78-76 win.

Pondexter made six of 14 shots against the Shock and finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists. The currently injured Essence Carson had a team-best 18 and Liz Cambage led Tulsa with 22 points.

Cambage averaged 22.7 points over a three-game stretch before being held to eight in a 90-88 loss to Los Angeles last Sunday. She was held out of a 74-65 defeat to San Antonio on Friday with an ankle injury and her status is unknown for this game.

With Cambage and point guard Angel Goodrich (illness) out, coach Gary Kloppenburg went to a three-guard lineup that featured rookie Skylar Diggins, who made her first start since July 13. Tulsa couldn't recover after being outscored 28-13 in the second quarter and was eliminated from playoff contention.
