Freedom Beat Windy City 6-2 to Clinch Playoff Spot

September 4, 2013 - Frontier League (FL) Florence Freedom The Florence Freedom defeated the Windy City Thunderbolts 6-2 Wednesday night at University of Cincinnati Medical Center Stadium to clinch a wild card berth to the Frontier League playoffs, the Freedom's second consecutive playoff appearance.

Windy City threatened right off the bat against Freedom starter Michael Oros, as Evan Button reached on an infield single and Mike Torres reached on an error by Freedom second baseman Aljay Davis. After Button was thrown out on a stolen base attempt, Ryan Soares singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Oros managed to strike out the next two batters to end the threat and keep the game scoreless after half an inning.

The Freedom dented the scoreboard first in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Cole Miles and an RBI single by Byron Wiley that gave the Freedom at 2-0 lead.

Florence pushed the lead to 3-0 in the fourth on a Pablo Bermudez RBI single off of Windy City starter Dan Cropper (L, 8-5).

The Thunderbolts cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the fifth on an RBI groundout by Button.

Florence responded in the bottom of the fifth by getting their run back. After Junior Arrojo doubled to lead off the inning, Miles sacrificed him to second and Byron Wiley drove him in to extend the Freedom lead to 4-1.

Windy City was not done scoring just yet however as Chad Cregar singled in a run in the eighth off of Jordan Conley, who came on in relief of Oros (W, 7-5), that made it a 4-2 game. Jorge Marban came on with two outs in the inning to strand the tying runs at second and third by striking out Andrew Brauer.

The Freedom got two important insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth as Pablo Bermudez lined a home run down the right field line that was just fair and pushed the Freedom lead to 6-2.

Marban (S, 27) walked a batter in the ninth but struck out Button swinging to end the game and send the Freedom on to the playoffs.

The Freedom have one game remaining in the regular season, tomorrow night's season wrap up in the rubber match between the Freedom and Thunderbolts. First pitch at UCMC Stadium is at 6:35, with tickets available at the UCMC Stadium ticket office or by phone at (859) 594-HITS. The game can also be heard on 1320-AM WCVG and gospel1320.com. Economic Freedom Fighters Recognised As Political Party

Johannesburg Julius Malemas political party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has been given the green light to contest the 2014 national elections by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). This, despite objections lodged against the EFF based on Malemas past and radical EFF policies.

EFF extends its gratitude to the Independent IEC for refusing to bow down to right-wing formations and the current murderous regime, which sought to prevent the registration of EFF as a political party, said Malema.

The registration of EFF as a political party is a historic moment and beginning of real radical, militant and decisive political programme which will lead to real emancipation of the people of South Africa, Africa and the world, said Malema in response the IECs approval of the party.

EFF will be contesting elections in order to be government, not in order to be toothless opposition party in various Parliaments and Legislatures, he added.

The registration of the EFF was delayed after the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) last month lodged an objection with the IEC against the former ANC Youth League leaders party. FF+ Chairperson Pieter Groenewald said in his complaint that many of the EFF policies and promises are unconstitutional, and noted that Malema himself had been found guilty of hate speech.

The EFF propagates the nationalisation of land, mines, banks and other assets without compensation and in particular on a racial basis. It is unconstitutional, said Groenewald.

The EFF fought back, calling the FF+ a white supremacist and reactionary political formation.

Freedom, responsibility

As we recognize the great gift of freedom that we enjoy, we also know that we have the responsibility to use it properly and well.

Indeed, the choices we make in the use of our freedom are fundamental to achieving our life's mission: we choose to tap into the opportunities open to us; we choose to expand the options available to us; and we choose the initiatives which enable us to pursue effectively the options we had selected. In all these choices, we do not lose sight of what we are living and working for; we keep our focus on our personal mission. This calls for a deep sense of responsibility:

First and foremost to our father, God, whom we profess to love. With our whole heart and mind, we make the choices that please him, i.e. those choices that conform to what he wants us to do. We take note of his laws and decrees, his commandments and instructions, starting with those he has revealed to us and including those he teaches us through the institution he left behind with the authority to teach and preach in his behalf. Moreover, those duties that our station in life imposes on us are a clear indication of what we must do, following his (God's) will.

Second, to ourselves. This may come as a surprise, but we do have a serious responsibility to take good care of ourselves. This responsibility urges us to use all of our talents and to sharpen them so we can expand our capacity to be of service to God and to all others. Indeed, this responsibility is for the proper use of our freedom: to work well and study hard, continuously and all throughout our life; to expand our horizons and broaden our heart and mind; to ensure that we have a sound mind in a sound body; and therefore to make decisions and take action well within the moral and legal norms we are called upon to observe.

Third, to others, starting with those who are closest to us, e.g. our family and those others we work and live with. As the good book instructs us, we have to love the others as much as we love ourselves. On the basis of such love and care, we are in a continuous search for ways and means by which to serve others: to give them what they need; to provide for whatever may make their life a bit more pleasant and comfortable; and above all, to show our love and concern for them through many details of affection and due consideration that we can shower upon them.

With responsibility come transparency and accountability.

Transparency is openness: from God we never hide anything; and we openly go to him for everything. When we are wounded, we go to him for healing; when in need, we go to him for help; and when in receipt of favours and blessings, we get back to him with deep thanks. And always, we offer the adoration that is due to him.

Moreover, we try to be honest and objective about ourselves: even as we keep trying to strengthen ourselves, we also recognize that we are weak in many respects. And with others, we are always sincere: no double face, but ever sensitive to, and accommodating of, their preferences, and even their whims and occasional caprices.

Accountability is commitment to a level of performance in line with expectations. Our word is our bond; and once given, we try to live up to it. We do our level best to keep the faith and trust of others, in part because we deliver what we had promised, and we act by what we had said. We take the consequences of our failure; and we give to everyone what we owe them, and when possible, even more than what we owed.

In sum, since responsibility always comes with freedom, we pursue our life's mission in freedom, knowing that it is not license.
