UFO Spotted Near Nasa's International Space Station [VIDEO]

Two unidentified flying objects (UFOs) were spotted near Nasas International Space Station (ISS) on Friday.

The UFOs are believed to be visible on a live video feed from the ISS camera, which maintains a 24-hour feed.

UStream says, "Live video from the International Space Station includes internal views when the crew is on-duty and Earth views at other times. The video is accompanied by audio of conversations between the crew and Mission Control. This video is only available when the space station is in contact with the ground."

The sighting was made by UFO enthusiast and blogger Scott C Waring, who wroteon his blog: This UFO must be huge, because the space station itself is 109 meters across and 73 meters wide, and in comparison with the space station and the distance we can assume the smaller of the UFOs is about 5-10 meters and the longer UFO is about 20-25 meters.

Also note in the video that the astronaut asks about the interval between the photos taken from the live cam on the ISS, as he hints at the UFO being there without actually saying so, he added.

One of two videos of the sighting has been uploaded on YouTube.

Earlier this week, hundreds of baseball fans were left baffled when a UFO was spotted during a minor league game. The match was taking place at the Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium in Vancouver, Canada.

The sighting, which brought luck for the Vancouver Canadians (the eventual winners of the match), came towards the start of the sixth innings and also got viewers tweeting photos of the unusual object with glowing lights. No explanation for the sighting has been made.

Gravity movie shows the dark side of space flight

Realistically terrifying (Image: Courtesy of Warner Bros Pictures)

It's the dawn of civilian space flight what better time to scare the wits out of any would-be space tourist thinking of remortgaging to buy a ticket to orbit? Gravity, the new film from Children of Men director Alfonso Cuarn, does that in spades and in captivating 3D.

Life in space is no picnic. If the unforgiving vacuum doesn't get you, you're at risk from the hypersonic speeds of orbiting objects and the burgeoning space junk we have abandoned in Earth orbit. Never before has a movie set in space made the dangers so viscerally plain.

This high-tech tale of orbital adversity, apparently set in the near future, kicks off with three spacesuited astronauts working on the Hubble Space Telescope, which they have docked to a still-in-service space shuttle. When a spectacular and brilliantly portrayed cosmic catastrophe destroys the shuttle (and, yes, Hubble too, telescope fans) two of the astronauts played by Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are left adrift to navigate a hazardous orbital scrapyard.

Watching the pair cope with their oxygen running out as they strive to reach other spacecraft for safety is hugely entertaining and seat-of-the-pants suspenseful, due in no small part to Bullock's bravura performance. As you may expect from the title, physics has a lead role, and the screenwriters have done a fantastic job of demonstrating it from the way tethered astronauts bounce off each other to the orbital mechanics of space debris with impressive accuracy.

After the initial disaster, Gravity has such a sparse but compelling plot that I can't say much more without spoiling it not least because with a running time of 91 minutes this is a pretty short film. That said, the compelling portrayal of the astronauts' agony at their plight caused a colleague watching the screening with me to remark that she could not have coped with a single minute's more suspense.

Gravity's storyline wins great credence from the factual space-flight asides that root the fiction in reality. For instance, it is mentioned that if you can drive a Russian Soyuz capsule you can probably also take the helm of a Chinese Shenzhou. This is correct: Shenzhou is indeed derived from a Soyuz design. And the Kessler effect in which a piece of hypersonic space debris smashes into a spacecraft, starting a chain reaction that generates still more debris is well shown, too.

This is a CGI-rich movie filming a drama with A-list actors in low Earth orbit is not feasible just yet. The 3D is pitched just right: it is so subtle that it was not until I saw one of Bullock's tears floating towards me across the cinema that I even noticed it. One oddity, though, is the way the CGI spacesuits, floating in space, had the actors' live faces injected into them: Bullock looks just fine, but Clooney looks astonishingly like Buzz Lightyear much of the time.

If you like New Scientist's space coverage it's a safe bet you'll be blown away by this movie, and it is already being spoken of as an Oscar contender after screenings at the Venice Film Festival. But be warned: Gravity does such a good job of taking you into orbit, you may be happy never to go yourself.

Gravity opens on general release in the US in early October and in the UK in November

NASA: There's time to fix robotic explorer before moon landing

NASA's Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE) launched late Friday, but experienced a slight glitch. Now, researchers are looking for a solution which will enable the robotic moon probe to orient itself properly.

After a near-perfect launch late Friday (Sept. 6), NASA's newest moon probe has encountered its first glitch on the road to Earth's nearest neighbor.

NASA's roboticLunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer(LADEE) blasted off atop a Minotaur V rocket from here at the space agency's Wallops Flight Facility in a dazzling Friday night launch that was visible from wide stretches of the U.S. East Coast.

Although thelaunch was nearly flawless, LADEE ran into some trouble right after its separation from the Minotaur V. The probe's onboard computer shut down LADEE's reaction wheels, which are used to stabilize the attitude of the probe in space, after noticing that they were drawing too much current. [See spectacular launch photos of NASA's LADEE moon probe]

But there's no reason to panic, NASA officials said.

"This is not an unusual event in spacecraft," Pete Worden, director of NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., which is leading the LADEE mission, said during a press conference in the wee hours of Saturday morning (Sept. 7). LADEE was developed and built at the Ames center.

"I've been involved with a lot of missions, particularly missions with small spacecraft," Worden said. "[They] quite often have things that don't come on the way you want. The really important thing is that we have full communications. Everything is healthy onboard the spacecraft. Everything is working, and the computer did what it was supposed to do."

Engineers will work to develop a repair plan over the next few days. But there's not a great deal of time pressure at the moment, Worden said. LADEE will take nearly a month to get to the moon on its long and looping route.
