Liberty For Youth gets a big boost from U.S. Steel

Liberty For Youth gets a big boost from U.S. Steel

By Gord Bowes, News staff

With help from U.S. Steel and other donors, Liberty for Youth is freed of the burden of paying a mortgage and can focus solely on helping at-risk youth, says the charitable groups founder. About a year ago, Frederick Dryden moved Liberty for Youth from his home into a storefront at 1925 King St. East. He had encouragement from Hamilton businessman and philanthropist Ron Foxcroft to make the leap of faith. With government funding winding down, Dryden had turned to Foxcroft for guidance on how to continue operating Liberty for Youth, which he started nine years ago out of his 500-square-foot basement. Foxcroft helped them put together a campaign cabinet to raise the $300,000 for the mortgage. It was U.S. Steels $150,000 donation a month ago that made the difference, says Dryden. It allowed him to reach his goal in 11 months rather than the planned three years. They came and rescued us, says Dryden. It takes the pressure off us. Now we can focus on helping. Previously, his organization was working with 45 to 50 kids a year. With the building they can now help double that number. For the last two weeks, the Liberty For Youth U.S. Steel Canada Youth Centre has been celebrating the donation. Its important to teach the youth who use the centre about showing gratitude, says Dryden. The young men and women who utilize these programs first enter feeling very alone, disengaged from the rest of society, hopeless, and see themselves as failure to those around them, says Trevor Harris, director of public affairs for U.S. Steel. Liberty For Youth provides these individuals with alternatives to what they are experiencing in life and helps turn these young lives around by providing the appropriate support they need. With the mortgage paid off, Liberty For Youth phase two of its building plan redesigning for space for functionality and safety, developing an all-day, drop-in homework centre; Set up a kitchen where youth can get free meals before and after school, and a karaoke and music room for youth to be creative. Chevonne Cameron is one of the teens Liberty For Youth helps. He also helps other teens. Cameron, 18, was kicked out of St. Jean de Brebeuf last year because of attendance problems. Dryden helped him get into Hill Park to earn the final credits he needs to graduate high school. If it wasnt for Drydens help, I dont even know if I would be in school right now, and he wouldnt be thinking about what he plans to take at Mohawk College after he graduates. In September, Cameron went to his co-op teacher to ask if he could do his placement at Liberty for Youth. He got the okay and while he is only required to do three hours a day, he is often there up to eight hours a day, volunteering with the basketball program when hes not putting in his co-op hours. Joe Henderson, who teaches the special co-op program with the Hamilton public school board, helps students who have had chronic problems at school or in the community. He connects them with an employer that matches what they might be looking for as a career. He says when Cameron brought the idea of Liberty For Youth, where he was a regular volunteer, to him, he checked out the program and gave him the approval. Henderson says he sees the value in the mentoring Dryden offers and the leadership skills Cameron is developing. Liberty For Youth is holding its Power of a Changed Life gala fundraising dinner and silent auction Nov. 6 at Carmens Banquet Centre. Tickets are $50 per person; for more information, see libertyforyouth.org.

Liberty Twp. now part of 45069 ZIP code

LIBERTY TWP.

A Butler County community is taking measures to ensure its name is front and center when it comes to economic development.

Liberty Twp. officials recently spent several months working with the US Postal Service to ensure all businesses and residences along Liberty Way and Cincinnati-Dayton Road south of Ohio 129 could use Liberty Township, OH 45069 for their address.

Previously, those in the townships central business district were required to use West Chester, OH, 45069 for their Liberty Twp. addresses.

The change applies to approximately 145 parcels and between 50 to 60 businesses, the majority of them on Cincinnati-Dayton Road, but comes two years in advance of the construction of the 1.1-million-square-foot Liberty Center, which is scheduled to open in 2015.

The opening of the $300 million mixed-used development is expected to drastically increase the amount of businesses in the region.

While putting a town and ZIP code traditionally is about directing mail to the correct address, to an expanding community like Liberty Twp. its about fostering community engagement and directing commercial growth, according to Caroline McKinney, the townships economic development director.

Its more than numbers when its where you live or where you work, McKinney said. Its a very personal thing. People want to be proud of where they live and, for a business, its their livelihood a lot of times.

West Chester Twp.s proximity to Liberty Twp. has the potential to make matters more confusing than any possible mix ups with Hamilton or Middletown.

West Chester, its just to the south. Its basically across the street, McKinney said. But when you talk about Middletown and Hamilton, those are like a couple of communities away.

Liberty Creek(R) Vineyards Supports Operation Gratitude in Holiday Drive to Bring Music to Troops Overseas

MODESTO, CA--(Marketwired - October 01, 2013) - Liberty Creek Vineyards is teaming up with Operation Gratitude to provide holiday cheer through the power of music to US military members serving overseas. Compilation CDs featuring holiday classics sung by top country crooners will serve to lift spirits, boost morale and provide comfort to service members far from home during the holiday season as part of the "Tunes for Troops" program. A Liberty Creek donation will enable Operation Gratitude to include the CDs in the care packages they send to troops around the world, for whom "home for the holidays" is not an option. Liberty Creek's holiday drive begins October 1st and will run through the end of the year.

Consumers can contribute to the holiday drive by visiting LibertyCreekWine.com and entering the unique code found on specially tagged bottles of Liberty Creek Wine. In exchange for the support, Liberty Creek will donate $1.00 per code to Operation Gratitude, up to $10,000. Operation Gratitude will use this donation to provide the specially created holiday music compilation CDs.

"At Liberty Creek Vineyards, we view the holiday season as a time to cherish what we have and give back to those who are in need of a boost during this time," says Michael Shastid, Brand Marketing Specialist, Liberty Creek Vineyards. "We are honored to be joining Operation Gratitude in giving back to the US troops who give so much of themselves for us every day."

Operation Gratitude sends care packages and letters personally addressed to U.S. Service Members and wounded warriors, and believes music makes the packages even more meaningful.

"'Tunes for Troops' is such an important part of our efforts, as music has the power to soothe, comfort and lift spirits among our troops, especially during the most difficult times to be away from loved ones," says Carolyn Blashek, Founder of Operation Gratitude. "Liberty Creek's continued support facilitates our ability to support US military members and to show our appreciation for the sacrifices they make."

Confused Libertarian Demands Obama Become Strongman

The day is young, but the least intelligent thing said about the shutdown and we're including man-on-the-street interviews has to be this column by Reasons Nick Gillespie blaming President Obama. Gillespies argument, to the extent that it is possible to detect one amid the poseur hand-waving, runs as follows:

A couple of points. First, the lack of a conference to negotiate the House and Senate budgets didnt happen for all sorts of reasons. It happened for one reason: Democrats pleaded to hold one and Republicans refused. Senate Democrats have spammed my e-mail in-box pleading for a budget conference on a near-daily basis. House Republicans refused because their strategy is not to negotiate through regular order but to use the threat of a shutdown and debt default to leverage unilateral concessions. This isnt my partisan accusation. They said this themselves, repeatedly!

Second, blaming the president for failing to kick the asses of leaders of the opposing party is a really dumb way to think about government, and especially so for a libertarian. Your analysis is that the president needs to compel the opposing party to accept policies it doesnt like? Thats a libertarian analysis?

Third, Gillespies entire rant is beside the point, because the lack of a negotiated budget is not the cause of a shutdown. Budget conferences are designed to set long-term federal budget policy. Keeping the government open doesnt require that. You just need to pass a continuing resolution. Thats it. Pass the CR, and the government stays open, and then you can either negotiate or not negotiate the federal budget.

Its continually amazing to me that this publication publishes commentary on public policy by a writer who lacks even a rudimentary understanding of the policy process.

When Islands Pop Out Of The Sea

Pakistanis walk on an island that emerged off the coastline in the Arabian Sea following a deadly magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Pakistan's southern province of Baluchistan on Sept. 24.

But it turns out islands crop up fairly often. Charles Darwin commented on one. And it's been happening in shallow marshy patches off the coasts of Sweden and Finland for millennia.

Darwin's Find

Back in 1835, Darwin found a bit of seafloor that had been wrenched up to the surface in Chile. He recounts the story in A Naturalist's Voyage, published in 1889.

Arriving on the island of Quiriquina after an earthquake, he wrote that some areas looked "as if they had been blasted by gunpowder" and even that "some cows which were standing on the steep side of the island were rolled into the sea."

Darwin also describes fresh chunks of island, hugging what had formerly been the shore. In a journal entry from March 4, he wrote: "During my walk around the island, I observed that numerous fragments of rock, which, from the marine productions adhering to them, must recently have been lying in deep water, had been cast up high on the beach."

The scene prompted a moment of realization.

"A bad earthquake at once destroys our oldest associations," he wrote. "The earth, the very emblem of solidity, has moved beneath our feet like a thin crust over a fluid; one second of time has created in the mind a strange idea of insecurity, which hours of reflection would not have produced."

New Nordic Islands

In Finland and Sweden, islands have been slowly but steadily popping out of the sea for thousands of years.
