Inslee wants aerospace tax breaks extended if Boeing builds 777X here

Gov. Jay Inslee said Wednesday hell propose extending the states aerospace incentives through 2040 if Boeing assembles the 777X and fabricates its composite wings in Washington.

He also said he has formed an advisory group to address an environmental issue water-quality regulation thats got Boeing worried about rising costs at its Renton plant on Lake Washington.

Inslee spoke at a gathering of aerospace industry executives in Everett, where the main item on the agenda was competition from other states for aerospace business.

These states want what we have and they are going after it aggressively in ways we cant do, said Matt Yerbic, chief executive of Everett-based aircraft-maintenance and repair company Aviation Technical Services (ATS). Its all about jobs.

The states aerospace incentives, including substantial tax breaks, were introduced 10 years ago to persuade Boeing to assemble the 787 Dreamliner here. They are to expire in 2024.

All aerospace companies in the state benefit from the incentives, though Boeing has drawn by far the biggest share.

Inslee told the states annual Aerospace Summit that the tax incentives have been tremendously successful for Washingtons citizens.

Drawing on an analysis released Wednesday, he said $1.4 billion in industry tax savings in aerospace had yielded $3 billion in direct revenues for state coffers.

If Boeing decides to build the 777X and (fabricate) the wing in Washington, I believe those incentives should be extended to the anticipated life of this airplane, through 2040, Inslee said.

Aerospace engineering student earns NASA fellowship

A UT Arlington aerospace engineering student from Flower Mound has been awarded a prestigious NASA Harriet G. Jenkins Predoctoral Fellowship that will allow her to pursue her research into efficient jet engines in conjunction with the space agency.

Ezgihan "Izzy" Baydar and her adviser, Frank Lu, professor in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department, were awarded the three-year fellowship that provides $135,000 in funding and includes summer internships at the NASA's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio.

Baydar said she was always interested in math and science subjects from her days at Flower Mound High School, where she graduated in 2008.

"Since childhood, I have been fascinated by everything related to space: films, documentaries and books. I've always dreamed of joining the NASA team as an astronaut or scientist," Baydar said. "Now, I have that opportunity, and I'm still a student." Lu, who also is the director of the UT Arlington Aerodynamics Research Center, described Baydar as a hard-working and dedicated student who is likely to go far based on the research she already has undertaken.

Baydar already has done research with UT Arlington Mathematics Professor Tuncay Aktosun. She's also interned one summer at Los Alamos National Laboratories.

"Izzy learns quickly. Her work in mathematics will serve her well in aerospace engineering," Lu said. "It's a nice fit, which benefits her and is great for this University." Baydar said that was her goal ever since she enrolled at UT Arlington.

"I wanted to combine something that took advantage of my love of math and science. Aerospace engineering fits those interests well and it combines math, mechanical engineering, avionics and engine design," Baydar said. "UT Arlington had an aerospace engineering bachelor's-to-PhD program that appealed to me because of the opportunity it gave me for undergraduate research."

Lu and Baydar's work at NASA will focus on making air intakes more efficient in jet engines.

"We want to make more modern designs for these air inlets," Baydar said. "We want them to be able to perform better at speeds between Mach 1 and Mach 2."

Mach 1 is about 760 miles per hour.

USC Aerospace center hopes to land Boeing

COLUMBIA, SC When will Boeing become a wingman on the University of South Carolinas new aerospace research center?

There are signs the Boeing-USC relationship is growing, holding out the possibility of growing the states new aerospace sector.

Representatives of the Chicago-based aerospace giant, which has a newly opened 6,000-employee plant in North Charleston, have attended events for USCs new McNair Center for Aerospace Research and Innovation. The centers new director also spent a year working for the company, and the school is talking with Boeing about sharing manufacturing processes used at its plants for research.

The hope is that Boeing will become the kind of partner to the McNair Center that BMW has become to Clemson Universitys International Center for Automotive Research in Greenville. The German automaker, which built its only U.S. plant in nearby Greer, has two endowed professors and a research operation at the Clemson center.

You wait for the right time, USC president Harris Pastides said Monday. We have outstanding relationships with (Boeing). ... Im confident that, as we develop our own mission, they will be on board with us.

Boeing said it has not committed yet to conducting research or providing financial support to any S.C. colleges.

We have ongoing dialog with a number of universities throughout South Carolina, and we continue to evaluate how future support may be targeted in conjunction with the needs of the company and the particular strengths of each program, Boeing said in a statement.

The McNair Center is just getting started with its business-driven mission.

S.C. Commerce Secretary Bobby Hitt was a speaker at Mondays investiture of the centers new director, Zafer Gurdal.

We really are just at the launch pad of a great aerospace industry, Hitt said at the event. If we have the same success in the next 20 years as weve had in the last 20 years with BMW, we will revolutionize this state in so many ways. It only can be done through increased potential through education.

Durata Therapeutics Presents New Comprehensive Review of the Efficacy and Safety Data of Dalbavancin and New In Vitro …

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 2, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Durata Therapeutics, Inc. (DRTX) today announced a comprehensive review of the efficacy, safety and microbiology data of the company's lead product candidate, dalbavancin, for the treatment of patients with acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI). The data is being presented in six posters at this year's IDWeek 2013(TM), held in San Francisco, Calif., October 2-6, 2013. Among the findings, an integrated analysis of two Phase 3 clinical studies (DISCOVER 1 and 2) showed dalbavancin met its primary and secondary endpoints of early response, measured at 48 to 72 hours of therapy, as well as clinical success at the end of treatment. Sensitivity analyses for both timepoints were also included.i A separate analysis showed that patients achieving cessation of spread of the lesion after 72 hours of antibiotic treatment with dalbavancin have a greater than 90 percent chance of being cured at the end of treatment.ii A pooled summary analysis of the safety profile of dalbavancin based on the Phase 2 and 3 clinical program also found it to be generally well-tolerated and to have a similar safety profile to comparators with fewer adverse events.iii Examination of patients with baseline Gram-positive bacteremia enrolled in the dalbavancin clinical development program as well as in vitro activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae were also presented.

"The data show that dalbavancin has the potential to be an efficacious and well-tolerated treatment option for patients with ABSSSI," said Durata Therapeutics Chief Medical Officer Michael Dunne, M.D. "Our studies were designed to meet the new standards required by regulatory authorities for antibiotic development in the United States and European Union and support our New Drug Application submission to the Food and Drug Administration late last week."

Dalbavancin is a novel antibacterial under investigation for the treatment of ABSSSI caused by susceptible Gram-positive microorganisms, such as S. aureus (including MRSA and other multi-drug resistant strains) and Streptococcus pyogenes, as well as certain other streptococcal species. Dalbavancin is bactericidal against Gram-positive bacteria and is administered with a once-weekly dosage regimen of 1000 mg on Day 1 and 500 mg on Day 8, over 30 minutes by intravenous infusion.

Copies of the following posters will be available on Durata Therapeutics' website: http://www.duratatherapeutics.com.

Poster # 1339: An Integrated Analysis of the Efficacy of Dalbavancin for the Treatment of Acute Bacterial Skin and Skin Structure Infections (ABSSSI) in the DISCOVER Programi (Date: October 5, 2013)

Data were presented from an integrated analysis of the efficacy results from the DISCOVER ("Dalbavancin for Infections of the Skin COmpared to Vancomycin at an Early Response") program and found that dalbavancin is non-inferior to the comparator regimen at both an early timepoint and at the end of therapy. The DISCOVER program includes two Phase 3 identically designed multicenter, double-blind, randomized clinical trials of more than 1,300 adult patients with ABSSSI from the United States, Europe, Asia and South Africa. Patients were treated for two weeks either with intravenous dalbavancin once weekly (1000 mg on Day 1 followed by 500 mg on Day 8) or with intravenous vancomycin (1000 mg or 15 mg/kg every 12 hours) with the option to switch to oral linezolid after three days. Primary endpoints from the DISCOVER trials were cessation of spread of the erythema associated with the lesion and resolution of fever measured at 48-72 hours per FDA requirements. While a secondary endpoint for FDA, clinical success at end of treatment is the expected primary endpoint for regulatory review in Europe. Examining both endpoints provides clinicians with correlation between the early and late findings.

The integrated efficacy analysis found that:

Poster # 1340: Concordance of Clinical Response at 48-72 Hours after Initiation of Therapy and End of Treatment (EOT) in Patients with Acute Bacterial Skin and Skin Structure Infection (ABSSSI) in the DISCOVER Studiesii (Date: October 5, 2013)

An additional analysis of the DISCOVER clinical trials examined the concordance of study endpoints (i.e., clinical response at 48-72 hours after initiation of therapy as well as at the end of treatment) and found that the majority of early responders were ultimately cured. Specifically, the analysis found that:

"The early assessment timepoint recommended by the FDA was put in place to guide antibiotic drug development for ABSSSI," said Mark Wilcox, M.D., Head of Microbiology, Leeds Teaching Hospitals and Professor of Medical Microbiology at the University of Leeds, UK and an advisor to the DISCOVER clinical trial program. "These data, however, may also give physicians confidence at an early timepoint that could help identify patients who could ultimately be cured and those who might fail."

The Marshall Space Flight Center, the largest NASA center, is dealing with the setbacks brought on by the shutdown.

"To that end we will have a minimum core staff here on site whose responsibilities are for the safety of life or the safety of property," said Director of Center Operations for NASA Steve Doering. He said they will only have essential staff on hand.

"We have at Marshall 2,432 civil servants of whom only thirty-four will be accepted employees working full time. Twenty-two of them are working space stations operations," he said. "Orbit operations are on a 24-hours-a-day basis, and we'll have another thirty or so that are going to be on call, so that's roughly less than 3% of the work force here at Marshall."

Doering said that some projects may have to shut down until they know how to proceed.

"We just have to put the right safe guards in place for those facilities," he said.

One big question that came up during shutdown talks was will employees get paid retroactively for furlough time. Officials told WAFF that NASA cannot promise that its employees will be paid for the period during which they are on furlough, since this is subject to Congressional appropriation.
