Liberty asking for road levy in November

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, Ohio - Township trustees aretelling residents that passage of a road levy in November is imperative to making roads smooth and driveable.

"If we don't [pass it], they have to realize we won't be paving roads," says trustee chairwoman Jodi Stoyak.

A similar levy failed two years ago, but now Stoyak says the township is working with significantly less money after reductions in revenue from the state and in thelocal government fund, a personal property tax that has been eliminated, and a state tax that will be eliminated.

She saysthe road department has beenpatching up the township's 60 miles of road, but it's only a temporary fix.

Theonly four roads that have been paved recently were done so through grant money that required matching funds. Stoyak says the general fund doesn't have the money to allow thetownship to get those kind of grants again.

At $1,000 a mile to pave the roads, Stoyak says the levy needs to bepassed if the residents want the roads paved.

The road levywill appear on the Nov. 5 ballot for township voters and, if passed, remain in effect for 5 years.

Liberty Silver borrowing money from ‘Bobby G’

With its finances on the brink of collapse, management at Liberty Silver Corp. have elected to take money from the last person they wanted to do business with.

The Toronto-based junior miner announced it is borrowing US$1-million from BG Capital, a firm controlled by penny stock promoter and former reality television star Bobby Genovese (better known as Bobby G).

It is a sharp reversal of strategy for Libertys board and management, which have been trying to distance themselves from Mr. Genovese ever since a stock trading scandal in 2012.

Last October, regulators in both Canada and the United States halted Liberty shares for two weeks after they soared to astronomical highs in a very short time. The move happened right after Liberty was heavily promoted by Mr. Genovese and a group of newsletter writers. It was later revealed that companies tied to Mr. Genovese sold more than eight million Liberty shares between the start of the promotional campaign and the trading halt, netting a large profit.

At last Decembers annual meeting, Libertys board and senior management maintained that they wanted nothing to do with Mr. Genovese as they tried to focus on the Trinity silver project in Nevada.

We are keeping ourselves very separate and apart from Mr. Genovese. So he has no influence on our company and is not a part of our financing plans, chairman Tim Unwin told the Financial Post at the meeting.

They have elected to do this deal with him because they had no other choice if they wanted to keep the lights on.

In an interview on Monday, Mr. Unwin said the company has been in contact with several potential long-term funders, but needed to raise some money right away to stay afloat while those talks continue. Mr. Genovese offered this short-term facility and Liberty saw no option but to take it.

Thats the real world and thats what we have to do, he said, adding that it should keep the company going for the next 18 months. He also said regulators know about the transaction.

Libertys latest set of financial statements confirm that it is in dire financial position. Its cash position was down to $23,925 at the end of June, while accounts payable totaled $867,952. The loan from BG Capital includes an immediate advance of US$50,000 that is badly needed.

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Liberty Mutual Insurance, the longest running sponsor in professional golf and the title sponsor of Savannah's Champions Tour event for the last 11 years, has cut ties with the Legends of Golf. Pro golf's future in Savannah in jeopardy

Liberty Mutual senior vice president Paul Alexander has confirmed that the company's decision to leave golf after 35 years, a result of Liberty Mutual's new sponsorship ventures with the Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup.

How the decision affects the future of professional golf remains unclear.

The Legends has been played at The Club at Savannah Harbor since 2003. Westin Savannah Harbor Resort general manager Mark Spadoni continues to be in discussions with the Champions Tour, which does not presently have a replacement sponsor or location for the Legends.

"We are in the process of working with the Tour to come up with a plan to keep the Legends going in Savannah,'' said Spadoni, who was returning from the Presidents Cup in Dublin, Ohio. "We are still very interested in having an event and the Tour continues to express an interest in having an event in Savannah and in finding a sponsor.''

The 2014 PGA Tour schedule has been out for a month, but next year's Champions Tour schedule has still not been released.

Dates and locations of tournaments will almost certainly be announced by the time the Charles Schwab Cup Championship is played Oct. 31-Nov. 3.

"We're being patient and we hope to come up with a solution,'' said Spadoni.

Alexander, meanwhile, said the decision to leave golf and Savannah was a difficult one.

"For 30-plus years, we've been very grateful to have our name linked to the greatest names in golf,'' said Alexander. "we've said thank you to the golfers for making the tournament successful and we also thank the Westin, the volunteers, the business community and the golf community in Savannah for supporting us for 11 years and making it a great event.''

HONOLULU, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- A study has changed a conception of how the Hawaiian Islands formed, researchers say, with a new model of the most common volcanic activity in the island chain.

Researchers from the University of Hawaii and the University of Rhode Island say they've determined it's eruptions of lava on the surface -- a process known as extrusion -- that grow Hawaiian volcanoes, rather than internal emplacement of magma as was previously thought.

It had long been believed Hawaiian volcanoes grew primarily internally -- from magma intruding into rock and solidifying before it reaches the surface -- but that process does not appear to be representative of the overall history of how the Hawaiian Islands formed, the researchers said.

Previous estimates of the internal-to-extrusive ratios -- internally emplaced magma versus extrusive lava flow -- were based on observations over a very short time frame in the geologic scheme of things, they said.

Historical land-based gravity surveys with more recent surveys on the Big Island of Hawaii and Kauai, along with marine surveys, allow them to infer processes that have taken place over longer time periods, the researchers said.

"The discrepancy we see between our [study] estimate and these past estimates emphasizes that the short term processes we currently see in Hawaii (which tend to be more intrusive) do not represent the predominant character of their volcanic activity," researcher Ashton Flinders said.

Oct. 7, 2013 A recent study by researchers at the University of Hawaii -- Manoa (UHM) School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) and the University of Rhode Island (URI) changes the understanding of how the Hawaiian Islands formed. Scientists have determined that it is the eruptions of lava on the surface, extrusion, which grow Hawaiian volcanoes, rather than internal emplacement of magma, as was previously thought.

Before this work, most scientists thought that Hawaiian volcanoes grew primarily internally -- by magma intruding into rock and solidifying before it reaches the surface. While this type of growth does occur, along Kilauea's East Rift Zone (ERZ), for example, it does not appear to be representative of the overall history of how the Hawaiian Islands formed. Previous estimates of the internal-to-extrusive ratios (internally emplaced magma versus extrusive lava flow) were based on observations over a very short time frame, in the geologic sense.

Ashton Flinders (M.S. from UHM), lead author and graduate student at URI, and colleagues compiled historical land-based gravity surveys with more recent surveys on the Big Island of Hawaii (in partnership with Jim Kauahikaua of the U.S. Geological Survey -- Hawaii Volcano Observatory) and Kauai, along with marine surveys from the National Geophysical Data Center and from the UH R/V Kilo Moana. These types of data sets allow scientists to infer processes that have taken place over longer time periods.

"The discrepancy we see between our estimate and these past estimates emphasizes that the short term processes we currently see in Hawaii (which tend to be more intrusive) do not represent the predominant character of their volcanic activity," said Flinders.

"This could imply that over the long-term, Kilauea's ERZ will see less seismic activity and more eruptive activity that previously thought. The 3-decade-old eruption along Kilauea's ERZ could last for many, many more decades to come," said Dr. Garrett Ito, Professor of Geology and Geophysics at UHM and co-author.

"I think one of the more interesting possible implications is how the intrusive-to-extrusive ratio impacts the stability of the volcano's flank. Collapses occur over a range of scales from as large as the whole flank of a volcano, to bench collapses on the south coast of Big Island, to small rock falls. " said Flinders. Intrusive magma is more dense and structurally stronger than lava flows. "If the bulk of the islands are made from these weak extrusive flows then this would account for some of the collapses that have been documented, but this is mainly just speculation as of now."

The authors hope this new density model can be used as a starting point for further crustal studies in the Hawaiian Islands.

Islands to be honeybee sanctuary

The islands of Colonsay and Oronsay are to become a native honeybee sanctuary.

A new law will come into effect in January, making it illegal to import any bee other than the Apis mellifera mellifera to the area.

The Hebridean islands have about 50 colonies of the species and the new order aims to protect them from cross-breeding and disease.

The varroa mite, which has devastated bee colonies across the country, has not affected Colonsay or Oronsay.

There are 250 species of bee in the UK consisting of 24 species of bumblebees, 225 specifies solitary bees, but just one honeybee species, the native Black Bee (Apis mellifera mellifera).

The species is much hardier than the the Yellow or Italian Bee (Apis mellifera ligustica), which means the bees can survive the harsh climate of the Inner Hebrides.

The Scottish government granted the order after a public consultation received overwhelming support.

The Bee Keeping (Colonsay and Oronsay) Order 2013 comes into force on 1 January.
