Senior freedom fighter, social worker and former Union minister Dr Mohan Dharia passed away in Pune on Monday morning. He was 88. Dharia was a close associate of former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar and was among the Young Turks of the Congress during the late 60s.

The man who defied Indira Gandhi

Dharia was suffering from a kidney ailment for last few months. He was admitted at the Poona Hospital after complaining of breathing problem. While undergoing dialysis in the hospital, Dharia's blood pressure dipped suddenly and he was shifted to the ICU. He breathed his last on Monday morning.

A socialist leader until the last moment of his life, Dharia was known as Anna to everybody. After leaving active politics, he travelled all over the Maharashtra for his campaign for tree plantation through his organisation Vanrai. He carried tree plantations in over 300 villages through this organisation.

Born on February 14, 1925, Dharia participated in the freedom movement at the age of 17. With his colleagues, he organised people's army and liberated the Janjira state in Maharashtra in 1948, where he was the foreign minister of the provisional government. He also led trade unions of postmen, state transport, bank, defense, Hindustan Antibiotics and other employees, and was the founder president of the National Labour Centre of India.

He was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Pune constituency in 1971. Dharia was the minister of state for planning, works, housing, and urban development during 1971-75. He was among the leaders who raised voice against the Emergency imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

He was the only minister to oppose and resign on this issue and had to go behind bars for 16-17 months for the survival of democracy in India.

He had also worked also as the deputy chairman of the planning commission when the Late Chandrashekhar became prime minister in 1991. He was conferred the Padma Vibhushan by the Indian government. Treasuring "Freedom of Expression" Principle

Source: 12Petals Media Group

Every man who says frankly and fully what he thinks is so far doing a public service. We should be grateful to him for attacking most unsparingly our most cherished opinions. John Stuart Mill [1] - On Liberty

Cherishing and Realizing Culture of Human Rights, Individual Liberty, Free Expression, and Free Media

Freedom of Expression [2] is, undoubtedly, the touchstone of all other rights and freedoms, and is the foundation of modern democracy [3]. The core and dominant tenet of Freedom of Expression is the acceptance and acknowledgement of a self-assertive Individual, along with her/his individualized pursuit (function of ones action and not fate-based) for happiness and the knowledge needed to realize it.

In brief, this principle is an essential formula for the full and hearty development of an individual. Being able to freely self-express is a fundamental right, and it is central to humanity.

This cardinal principle encompasses not only freedom of self-expression, but also Freedom of Thought , Speech, Press, Assembly and Association, Privacy, Media, and so forth. Indeed, the embedded intellectual hallmark of this freedom that is highly essential to progress and modernity in society honors pluralism of ideas [4], factual and intelligent inquiry, rationalism [5], critical thinking and reasoning [6], empiricism [7], and skepticism [8]

Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights(UDHR) reads, Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression. Additionally, this Article confirms that freedom of opinion and expression includes the freedom to hold any type of ideas without interference, to seek, receive, and impart information and ideas free from any type of constraints and barriers. [9] Furthermore, the principle of Freedom of Expression is well-linked to the individual liberty concept - freedom is vital to individual growth. Generally speaking, in order to explain liberties we are to, in the first place, push back the boundaries to the maximum possible extent; the same is applicable to the freedom of expression.

Equally important, the principle of Freedom of Expression embraces the freedom to impart and broadcast ideas through any media, which means every individual shall have anequal opportunity of access to the media, particularly the mass communications media. This is why monopoly of media whether by governments or non-governmental organizations, and also censorship [10] are flagrant violations of the freedom of expression principle. On the other hand, the instances of the freedom of expression need to be understood broadly; and that means inclusion of various issues ranging from freedom of media to freedom of fashion and dress choice and so on.

Article 19 (UDHR) affirms that enjoying the freedom of expression shall not be subject to boundaries. Nevertheless, the exercise of this right carries with duties and responsibilities because undisciplined freedom is an abuse of liberty. [11] To protect rights of others and to safeguard public, Article 19 (3) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) [12] sets legitimate limits for the freedom, which includes:

Firefighters tackle house fire on Sydney's northern beaches

Firefighters tackle house fire on Sydney's northern beaches

A home at Newport on Sydney's northern beaches has been destroyed by fire.

Several fire crews managed to stop the blaze from spreading to neighbouring properties.

The blaze broke out in a two-storey weatherboard home on Herbert Avenue at Newport, around 2pm.

Thick black smoke could be seen billowing into the air.

The house fire follows what's been a very busy weekend for authorities.

Police are reviewing CCTV footage as they investigate the cause of a fire that tore through the Sydney Aquatic Centre car park, destroying 47 cars.

It's believed the blaze started when a motorist flicked a cigarette out of their car window during Sunday's scorcher.

The cost to Sydney families who had parked outside the Aquatic Centre at Olympic Park is reported to be in the tens of thousands of dollars, since many of the cars incinerated in a freak blaze were uninsured.

Out-of-control bushfires destroyed six homes in the NSW area of Port Stephens on Sunday.

You beauty: our beaches in running for award

Oct. 14, 2013, 10 p.m.

Accolades keep flowing for the Illawarra's coastline, with several local beaches in the running to be crowned NSW's most environmentally friendly beach.

Wollongong, North Wollongong, Warilla and Coalcliff are among 32 beaches around NSW that will be assessed this week by Keep Australia Beautiful for awards as part of the Clean Beaches program.

After passing through a nomination process, beaches around the state will be graded on a host of measures, from environmental protection and waste management to water sustainability and community partnership.

"The awards recognise individual endeavours to protect and enhance coastal communities across the state," assessor Colin Besley said.

Mr Besley, from Sydney Water, is assessing beaches across Sydney and the Illawarra this week, and will be in the region on Thursday to see our beaches first-hand.

"Coastal groups or councils send in nominations, then we meet with them at the beaches so they can give local knowledge of the area."

The Illawarra, no doubt, has reason for confidence when the awards are announced in Sydney on December 13. A recent State of the Beaches report, published by BeachWatch, graded water quality at all 13 Wollongong beaches as "very good" or "good". Warilla and Wollongong beaches received the highest ratings, while North Wollongong received a "good" ranking.

The quality of Illawarra beaches is no secret, but that is not the only reason for diving in for a swim. Sea temperatures are much warmer than average for October, with the mercury pushing an almost balmy 22 degrees in local waters last weekend.

"Sea temperatures on the east coast have been very warm in recent months, with the northern parts of Australia seeing the highest temperatures on record," said Julie Evans, a meteorologist with the Bureau of Meteorology.
