Freedom Plaza brewpub seeks Naperville's OK to sell growlers

Article updated: 11/1/2013 4:22 PM

Retail restaurants and microbreweries in Naperville aren't allowed to sell brews in growlers the craft beer term for two-liter bottles but that could change beginning with a discussion scheduled for Tuesday's city council meeting.

The council plans to start consideration of a new growler permit that would allow businesses with Class B restaurant liquor licenses to sell beer brewed on-site for consumption off-site in 67-ounce containers.

If the growler permit receives preliminary approval Tuesday and a final nod at a later city council meeting, the first restaurant to apply could be one of four eateries being built with the Freedom Plaza development on the city's north side.

Granite City Food & Brewery, a Minnesota-based chain with 34 locations in 13 states, will occupy one of the four restaurant outlots accompanying a 168-room Embassy Suites hotel scheduled to open next summer at Abriter Court and Independence Avenue west of the Freedom Commons development.

FBI needs your help snaring 'Cyborg Bandit'

The FBI has dubbed this bank robber the Cyborg Bandit. Can you guess why? Here hes pictured robbing a Bellevue Key Bank on Sept. 24. (FBI photo)

OK, it is Halloween, but this guy isnt trick-or-treating. At least not in the normal sense.

The FBI has dubbed this bank robber the Cyborg Bandit for obvious reasons.

They say he has robbed at least four different banks in the past two months, most recently in Bothell on Oct. 23. Hes also hit banks in Woodinville, Shoreline and Bellevue.

Hes described as white, between 5-feet-9 and 6 feet tall, with a thin build. Despite the getup, theres nothing bionic about him.

During the robberies, the FBI says hes covered his face with a distinctive cloth and worn the hood of his sweatshirt over his head.He has also worn clear latex gloves.

Anyone with information on Cyborg is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).Callers may remain anonymous and are eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $,1000, according to the FBI.

Cris Cyborg expects Invicta FC return in January

Cristiane "Cyborg" Justino captured the Invicta FC featherweight title in a four-round domination over Marloes Coenen last July, and shes looking to return to the cage in January 2014. The opponent and the weight class are yet to be determined.

"This is the last fight in my contract with Invicta FC, and they asked me if I can fight in January," Justino told MMAFighting.com. "I dont know who Im fighting next, but Im fighting in January.

"They asked me if I would accept a fight at 155 pounds, and I said I would. I just want to fight. At 145 or 155, Ill fight whoever they give me. But I dont know if Ill defend the title in my next fight."

Invicta FC has never done a lightweight bout in their previous six events, and the seventh show, planned for Dec. 7, includes only one featherweight clash -- and again, zero lightweight contests.

Featherweights Julia Budd and Charmaine Tweet are both coming off three stoppage victories, but "Cyborg" believes its unlikely that she puts her title on the line against the winner of that bout.

"I dont think Ill fight the winner of this bout because theyre fighting in December, so I dont believe the winner would be ready to fight me in January," she said. "Who knows? It might happen, but I think its unlikely."

Justinos three-fight deal with Invicta FC ends in her next bout, and shes willing to sign a new deal with the promotion.

"This is the last fight of my contract, but Im really happy at Invicta FC, and I believe Ill sign a new deal," she said. "I like them, and theres simply no other place to go. UFC has womens division, but they dont have my weight class. I believe Ill sign a new deal with Invicta FC after this fight."

Signing a new contract with Invicta FC doesnt mean "Cyborg" forgot the idea of fighting UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, though.

"I really wanted to fight Ronda Rousey in a catchweight bout, but UFC doesnt want to do this fight," she said. "It wouldnt be interesting to them because I would go there, beat the crap out of her and return to Invicta. It would be bad for the UFC and they know that, and thats why they dont want this fight."

Beaches Habitat for Humanity plans 78 homes

ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. -- Beaches Habitat for Humanity has big plans on the drawing board that include 78 homesbeing builtalong Mayport Road.

The organization this week submitted plans to the city of Atlantic Beach detailing what is envisioned for 201 Mayport Road.

"Most of our opportunities have been buying vacant lots and here and there or older homes and fixing them up," said Brian Wheeler with the Genesis Group, which is involved in the permitting process.

The planned development isjust east of theflyover that takes traffic to Mayport Road and the Navy base.

The vacant land that was once apartments has beena community eyesore for years. The property is seven acres in size with most of homes envisioned being duplexes or triplex housing.

The permitting process thathas just started would put construction startinglate next year.

The 78-home complex would be the largest project that Beaches Habitat has done to date.

Cleanup in Corpus Christi area targets beaches

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) Ellis Pickett has been surfing around the country for 50 years. He's stepped on petroleum-filled sands on beaches in the pre-Environmental Protection Act era.

Although the 63-year-old man has seen improvement in the form of industrial regulations in oceans and marine wildlife conservation projects, he believes the beaches of South Texas have degraded in the form of trash and litter found along the coast.

"It's the shame on our Texas beaches," Pickett said. "It shows how lazy people are."

The Corpus Christi Caller-Times (http://bit.ly/1ai4uDv ) reports Pickett is a member of the Surfrider Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by surfers and dedicated to preserving beaches across the nation. Pickett, a Padre Island National Seashore regular, said apathy leads to plastic bags, glass bottles and other items left on the beach. Items that can be harmful to ocean wildlife.

"In South and Central Texas beaches there are beer cans all over," Pickett said. "People shop at Stripes and just leave their bags there."

Marine debris has proved to be a perennial problem for beach officials, but its source isn't always easy to pinpoint. Currents from the Gulf of Mexico bring in debris from areas ranging from around the country to Mexico, and it can be difficult to differentiate what is left by beach visitors and what came in from abroad.

Juan Rodriguez, chief of interpretation and education at Malaquite Visitor's Center, said trash left behind pales in magnitude to items coming in from the Gulf, which have included oil drums and narcotics.

"I don't think it's a major problem but it could be if it keeps accumulating," Rodriguez said. "More needs to be done, but resources are limited."

Since its inception in 1986, the Adopt-a-Beach program has collected more than 8,500 tons of debris on Texas beaches. In September, its fall cleanup recovered more than 7 tons along 6 miles of the beach.

Items recovered by the volunteer organization range from toys and plastic bottles to a prosthetic leg and cocaine.
