Freedom High School Receives Classroom Makeover

The Collision Repair Education Foundation (CREF) honored Freedom High School of Freedom, Wisconsin last night at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas with a $10,000 classroom makeover grant furnished by a donation from CCC Information Services. The Freedom High School Automotive Repair Program is a nationally recognized program, educating and preparing students for a career in collision repair for more than 40 years. CCC Information Services is a leading provider of software and services to the automotive claims and collision repair industries and a longtime supporter of CREF.

The tools, technology and information needed to complete quality repairs have changed a lot since I was a student in this very program more than 10 years ago, said Jay Abitz, Instructor, Freedom High School Automotive Repair Program. CCC has been kind enough to donate estimating software to our program for many years, but the classroom makeover grant was something I never expected. It has allowed us to buy educational DVDs, equipment and most importantly a tablet device, which means we can work with the latest technology and keep our students on the front edge of innovation. We appreciate what CREF and CCC has done to support our program.

CCC is one of only five industry organizations that have donated over $1 million to the Collision Repair Education Foundation in the charitable organizations lifetime, said Brandon Eckenrode, Director of Development, CREF. We would like to thank CCC for helping to provide Freedom High School with the classroom tools and equipment needed to provide an updated technical education to their collision students.

Strong winds, surf damage already battered Treasure Coast beaches

Story by Jana Eschbach / CBS 12 News STUART, Fla. -- A high surf advisory is in effect for the Palm Beaches and the entire Treasure Coast.

The emergency dunes are still in place at Bathtub Beach Reef Beach in Stuart. Tuesday morning's high tide carved out cliffs along the coastline.

Most of the damage was caused by the fall storms in 2012, badly damaging beaches along the coast, costing Treasure Coast counties close to $60 million in dune replacement and beach renourishment from Stuart to Sebastian.

Since 2008, more than $1.4 million in sand has been dumped here to shore up the coastline on Hutchinson Island.

It was Super Storm Sandy that damaged boardwalks, boat docks, and even several homes along Hutchinson Island.

But engineers say this coastal erosion will not rise to that level of danger. They expect conditions to get better as the week goes on.

"It's our first major storm of the season and it also coincides with the highest tides of the year. This new moon tide," said Don Donaldson, Martin Co. Coastal engineer. "It should hold and we are expecting it to but we are prepared in case it doesn't."

A coastal flood watch was in effect for the coastal areas of Indian River, St. Lucie and Martin counties this morning at high tides.

A gale warning for boaters expired, but the seas are not looking safe nor inviting, with a small craft advisory still in effect.

The starry glow of the night sky brings news from the distant edges of the cosmos, as light fills astronomers' telescopes with the bizarre and wondrous processes in the universe. But light cannot tell the whole storyoften it reveals only an object's superficial glow. To better understand the cores of powerful astrophysical objects, scientists are studying individual particles that can tell a firsthand tale of the extreme events that launch them outward at tremendous speed. A promising new frontier has just opened up that should bolster those investigations.

For more than a century now scientists have trapped particles known as cosmic rays to gather clues about the universe. Cosmic rays are charged particles (mostly protons) ejected by cosmic outbursts. Some have as much energy as a tennis ball served up at 90 miles per hour. Unfortunately, it is impossible to track a cosmic ray back to its source in the sky; magnetic fields twist the paths of charged particles into knots before those particles reach Earth.

The lightweight, neutral particles known as neutrinos do not have that problem. Neutrinos are famous for their ghostly behaviorthey can emerge unmolested from the center of a violent outburst, zip straight across the universe and pass cleanly through Earth's atmosphere. Those qualities make neutrinos exquisite carriers of astronomical information. The trick is catching them once they arrive.

Scientists have constructed a giant neutrino detector, known as IceCube, a mile under Antarctic ice in the hopes of netting these astronomical neutrinos. And earlier this year the IceCube project announced that it had found 28 neutrinos so energetic that they must have come from outside the solar system. Two of the neutrinos, highlighted in a July study in Physical Review Letters, carry so much energyhundreds of times that of the particles in the Large Hadron Colliderthat affectionate astronomers have singled them out with names: Ernie and Bert.

As to what birthed these high-energy neutrinos, speculation abounds. They could have emerged from gamma-ray bursts, mysterious and short-lived cataclysms that briefly rank as the brightest objects in the universe; shock waves from exploding stars; or so-called blazars, jets of energy powered by supermassive black holes. Or Ernie and Bert may be the particle spawn of dark matter, the unidentified stuff that provides much of the universe's massor perhaps even a sign of more exotic phenomena.

In truth, scientists cannot glean much from a mere 28 particles. So far the high-energy neutrinos do not seem to point back to a specific source, which would give scientists more to go on. Everybody's reading the tea leaves, says Francis Halzen, director of the IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center at the University of WisconsinMadison. But with IceCube expected to run for at least another decade, the era of particle astronomy is just beginning.

NASA grant helps NMSU astronomy student?s search for microbial life

New Mexico State University student Kyle Uckert is working on the development of instrumentation to help identify signs of life on bodies of the solar system. He has been selected as one of 65 graduate students in the 2013 class of NASA Space Technology Research Fellows and will receive funding for his work for three years.

Uckert, who is a graduate student in the College of Arts and Sciences Astronomy Department, is developing a two-step laser time-of-flight mass spectrometer to isolate materials within rocks, and identify and characterize biosignatures within geological samples.

I will identify the spectral characteristics of amino acids and other chains of basic organic compounds essential to life on Earth, he said. The mass spectrometer uses a laser to ablate materials off of rocks. The plasma-like material is then accelerated into a detector, which helps measure chemical constituents of samples. Were able to infer from this whether theres any organic matter and identify any signs of present or past life on the rock.

As part of his research, Uckert is studying the materials found in cave rocks. He said he hopes the instrumentation he is developing will one day be used on landed or roving space missions.

Were starting to study life in caves on Earth, he explained. Caves are a good analog for extreme environments where we might hope to find life elsewhere in the solar system. Theyre sheltered from ultraviolet light. Theres also the potential for water to be below the surface of other planetary bodies.

The instrument will hopefully be flown to another planetary body to help us look for life there. My role is to help identify what the best way to look for life here on Earth is, so that we can apply that knowledge elsewhere in the solar system. Ill be doing that for the next three years.

Uckert uses three types of devices to study and analyze the materials: a two-step laser desorption time-of-flight mass spectrometer for organic and biosignature identification; infrared and ultraviolet reflectance spectrometers, complimentary instrumentation at NMSUs geology and electrical engineering departments; and a laser-induced breakdown spectrometer to quantify the effectiveness of these instruments as biomarker identification tools.

Through the fellowship, Uckert will also have the opportunity to work with a mentor at a NASA institution, Stephanie Getty. He will spend time at the Goddard Space Flight Center utilizing the equipment.

Uckert, who anticipates graduating in 2016, earned his bachelors degree at Ohio University. He chose NMSU for his graduate studies because his now-adviser Nancy Chanover was working on the project, and he wanted to be involved. He also works with Nancy McMillan of geological sciences and David Voelz of electrical engineering.

The most fascinating thing about this research is that the technology that were developing has potential to impact future missions to other planets, he said. The most challenging thing is trying to decide what constitutes something that has life in it, or trying to find the life. We look for life in solar system based on what we think life should look like. We really only have one data point for that. We dont know for sure whether life in other bodies will have the same properties, but its the best place we have to start.

NASA video shows birth and death of Tropical Storm Sonia

Tropical Storm Sonia formed on Friday, Nov. 1 from the eighteenth tropical depression of the Eastern Pacific Ocean hurricane season. Sonia became a tropical storm on Nov. 2 and by Nov. 4 made landfall in western Mexico. Sonia's brief life was captured in a NASA animation of imagery from NOAA's GOES-West satellite.

NOAA's GOES-West satellite keeps a continuous eye on the eastern Pacific and western U.S. NASA's GOES Project at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. takes the satellite data and creates video and still images. A 36 second video that runs from Nov. 1 to Nov. 4 shows Tropical Depression 18E strengthen into Tropical Storm Sonia (it appeared more rounded as the circulation became more organized), and then moved northeast and made landfall during the early morning hours on Nov. 4.

On Nov. 2 at 8 p.m. EDT, Tropical Depression 18E was located about 345 miles/555 km south of the southern tip of Baja California and was moving northwest. By Sunday, Nov. 3 at 4 a.m. EST, Tropical Depression 18E strengthened into Tropical Storm Sonia when it was about 285 miles/455 km south of the southern tip of Baja California. That's when tropical storm warnings and watches were issued from Mazatlan northward to Altata. Hours after strengthening, Sonia turned to the north-northeast and headed for mainland Mexico.

Sonia's strongest maximum sustained winds reached 45 mph/75 kph but only for several hours. Sonia maintained that strength from 10 a.m. EDT to 7 p.m. EST and then weakened.

By 4 a.m. EST on Monday, Nov. 4, Sonia had already made landfall along the coast of Sinaloa near the city of El Dorado. Sonia had already weakened to a tropical depression as it continued moving further inland on a north-northwesterly track. Sonia's maximum sustained winds were near 35 mph/55 kph and it was weakening as it moved over western Mexico's rugged and mountainous terrain. It was centered about 20 miles/30 km southeast of Culiacan, Mexico, near 24.6 north and 107.3 west.

Rainfall is the biggest threat from Sonia, as with any land falling tropical cyclone. The National Hurricane Center expects between 3 and 6 inches of rainfall with isolated totals as high as 10 inches in the Mexican states of Sinaloa, western Durango and southern Chihuahua on Nov. 3.

NASA Begins Airborne Campaign To Map Greenland Ice Sheet Summer Melt

For the first time, a NASA airborne campaign will measure changes in the height of the Greenland Ice Sheet and surrounding Arctic sea ice produced by a single season of summer melt. NASA's C-130 research aircraft flew from the Wallops Flight Facility in Wallops Island, VA, to Greenland Wednesday where they will conduct survey flights to collect data that will improve our understanding of seasonal melt and provide baseline measurements for future satellite missions. Flights are scheduled to continue through Nov. 16.

The land and sea ice data gathered during this campaign will give researchers a more comprehensive view of seasonal changes and provide context for measurements that will be gathered during NASA's ICESat-2 mission, which is scheduled for launch in 2016.

"The more ground we cover the more comparison points we'll have for ICESat-2," said Bryan Blair of Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD, principal investigator for the Land, Vegetation and Ice Sensor, or LVIS.

Warm summer temperatures lead to a decline in ice sheet elevation that often can be significant in low-lying areas along the Greenland coast. In past years, the Jakobshavn Glacier, located in the lower elevations of western Greenland, has experienced declines of nearly 100 feet in elevation over a single summer. Higher elevations farther inland see less dramatic changes, usually only a few inches, caused by pockets of air in the snowpack that shrink as temperatures warm.

"Surface melt is more than half of the story for Greenland's mass loss," said Ben Smith, senior physicist at the University of Washington's Advanced Physics Laboratory, Seattle, and member of the science team that selected flight lines for this campaign. The rest of Greenland's mass loss comes from ice flowing downhill into the ocean, often breaking off to form icebergs, and from melting at the base of the ice sheet.

Researchers will measure ice elevation using the LVIS laser altimeter and the LVIS-GH, a new, smaller version designed to fly on NASA's Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle. LVIS and LVIS-GH will measure separate but overlapping swaths of the ice from an altitude of 28,000 feet.

The C-130 carrying both instruments will fly out of Thule and Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, allowing researchers to sample both high- and low-elevation ice and a variety of geographic areas.

"We plan to concentrate our flights on areas northwest, southeast and southwest Greenland and the Arctic Ocean," said Michelle Hofton, LVIS mission scientist at Goddard and the University of Maryland, College Park. "The measurements we collect along lines sampled in IceBridge's spring 2013 Arctic campaign will allow scientists to assess changes over the summer."
