Cancer drug reduces MS relapses – Video

Cancer drug reduces MS relapses
From Cambridge - A drug used to treat cancer has shown great success in reducing multiple sclerosis disease activity, according to two trials published in the Lancet. In the first trial, over 500 MS patients who had yet to undergo any treatment for their disease, were randomized to receive the cancer drug alemtuzumab or interferon beta 1a, the most common treatment for MS. After two years follow-up, results showed that those only 22% of patients on the cancer drug relapsed, while 40% of those on interferon beta 1a relapsed. In the second study, nearly 900 patients who had already been treated with initial therapy and suffered a relapse were randomized to either alemtuzumab or interferon beta 1a or glatiramer, another common MS drug. As in the first trial, patients taking alemtuzumab were significantly less likely to relapse than those taking interferon beta 1a or glatiramer. In addition, alemtuzumab was associated with a reduction in disease-related disabilityFrom:insidermedicineViews:4 0ratingsTime:00:57More inScience Technology

Tinnitus is not a disease, but a condition that can result from a wide range of underlying causes: neurological damage (multiple sclerosis), ear infections, oxidative stress,[1] foreign objects in the ear, nasal allergies that prevent (or induce) fluid drain, wax build-up and exposure to loud sounds. Withdrawal from benzodiazepines may cause tinnitus as well. In-ear earphones, whose sound enters directly into the ear canal without any opportunity to be deflected or absorbed elsewhere, are a common cause of tinnitus when volume is set beyond moderate levels. Tinnitus may be an accompaniment of sensorineural hearing loss or congenital hearing loss, or it may be observed as a side effect of certain medications. However, the most common cause is noise-induced hearing loss. As tinnitus is usually a subjective phenomenon, it is difficult to measure using objective tests, such as by comparison with noise of ...From:milleaccendiniViews:1923 120ratingsTime:01:59:50More inGaming

Breastfeeding Sucks! – Video

Breastfeeding Sucks!
Yes, I decided to tell you what I really think about breastfeeding! I know that this could offend people. I do make light of serious issues and do not try to cover everything. My point is to shed light (and make light) on the struggles that some mothers have in hopes of bringing mothers together, rather than the divisive nature of breastfeeding mothers vs. formula feeding mothers. For the most part, I believe that people are fine with others making the best decisions for their family without having an opinion either way. Others seem to be more opinionated 🙂 In much of the literature I read, I consistently found reasons to breastfeed that were condescending to those who chose not to/or could not breastfeed. I believe there needs to be information out there promoting breastfeeding and it #39;s awesome benefits, but I also think it needs to talk more about the realities of the difficulties and offer solutions rather than fear. In the promotion of breastfeeding, I don #39;t think it #39;s helpful to shoot down the alternative (formula) by guilting mothers into an array of "possible" ailments they could be bringing on their children (while ignoring other important factors including environment, genetic, or medical causes). MY POINT: Breastfeeding was hard for me. I felt like I was prepared and informed, yet when problems arose, I felt it was difficult to find helpful solutions. When I turned to find help, I was met with much literature that was not only not giving me helpful advice, but ...From:breanneshop52Views:8 24ratingsTime:10:29More inPeople Blogs

BRAIN TUMORS ON THE RISE CELL PHONES WI FI CAN CAUSE CANCER How to protect your health
Home: http://www.beamsinvestigations.org.uk This material has been posted for educational purposes. 1st uploaded by phonedefense Many scientists and doctors are linking serious health symptoms to cell phone use: BRAIN TUMORS ON THE RISE Epidemiologist Sam Milham, MD, recently stated on CNN #39;s Larry King Live show that there is "plenty of reason for concern" about cell phones causing brain cancer. Robert Tufel, Director of Patient Services at the National Brain Tumor Foundation. says "what we do know is that brain tumor incidence is on the rise and some of the research about cell phones and brain tumors has given us cause for concern." YOUNG CHILDREN ABSORB 50% MORE RADIATION INTO THE BRAIN Research by Om Gandhi, professor of electrical engineering at the University of Utah, has shown that young children absorb up to 50% more radiation in their brains than adults when they use mobile phones. Radiation penetrates 30% for a 10-year-old, compared with just a small area around the ear in an adult. Absorption rates are greater in children because their ears and skulls are smaller and thinner. Furthermore, their total lifetime exposure to cell phone radiation will be greater than for those who began using cell phones as adults. WHITE BLOOD CELLS DESTROYED Biologist Roger Coghill believes that cell phone radiation may damage the ability of white blood cells to fight off infection and disease, including cancer. Coghill took white blood cells from a donor, kept them alive with nutrients ...From:totallyinexplicableViews:9 0ratingsTime:05:50More inNews Politics

Week 14: Disability Studies – Video

Week 14: Disability Studies
Mike Selck, Senior at SIUC presenting on Disability Studies Disability Studies- What does it mean? This is a complex relationship- has to hold both social and individual perspectives in a unique balance. Disability as a social construct- Interesting notion because the first thought here is how? What is it about my rhetoric or language uniquely responsible for the existence of a disability? That question is important to answer what a Disability truly is. I wont cite many authors here, but I feel that this one is necessary. Disabled Persons International a) Disability is the functional limitation within the individual caused by physical, mental, or sensory impairment, and b) Disability as the loss or limitation of opportunities to take part in the normal life of the community on an equal level with others due physical or social barriers. Impairment is defined as a form of biological, cognitive, sensory or psychological difference that is define often within a medical context. And disability is the negative social reaction to those differences. Identifying the Oppression is key- Disablism and or/ both and ableism. This perspective comes from a unique form called the Social Barriers Approach- Models like the medical model hold that a body becomes disabled because of the presence of impairment. -For instance my dad had to use a wheelchair because of his Multiple Sclerosis. The medical model indicates my dad #39;s body was disabled because he had MS and used a wheelchair ...From:criticalpraxisViews:147 2ratingsTime:33:12More inEducation
