New eruption may be brewing at El Hierro volcano in Canary Islands

A view of El Hierro island's coast on Nov. 6, 2011, after an underwater volcano eruption, in the Canary Islands, southwestern Spain.

Two years after a new underwater volcano appeared offshore of El Hierro in the Canary Islands, earthquake swarms and a sudden change in height suggest a new eruption is brewing near the island's villages, officials announced Friday (Dec. 27).

After the announcement, one of the largest temblors ever recorded at the volcanic island, a magnitude-5.1 earthquake, struck offshore of El Hierro at 12:46 p.m. ET (5:46 p.m. local time) Friday, the National Geographic Institute reported. Residents on the island reported strong shaking, and the quake was felt throughout the Canary Islands, according to news reports. The earthquake's epicenter was 9 miles (15 kilometers) deep.

Before the earthquake struck early Friday afternoon, the island's volcano monitoring agency, Pelvolca, had raised the volcanic eruption risk forEl Hierroto "yellow." This warning means that activity is increasing at the volcano, but no eruption is imminent. A similar burst of activity prompted a yellow warning in June 2012, but the volcano soon quieted down.

Parts of El Hierro have swelled nearly 3 inches (7 centimeters) in the past week, with the growth centered between El Pinar and La Restinga, according to Involcan, the Volcanological Institute of the Canaries.

More than 550 earthquakes rattled the island between Monday and Wednesday, also centered on La Restinga. About 30 of the earthquakes were greater than magnitude 3, Involcan said. The earthquakes are triggered by magma rising underground, fracturing rocks and swelling the surface as the hot rock reaches upward. "The earthquake swarm corresponds to a new magmatic intrusion," Involcan said Friday morning in a statement.

Friday's preliminary magnitude-5.1 earthquake was on the opposite side of the island from the ongoing swarm.

El Hierro was the site of a spectacular underwatervolcanic eruptionin 2011, which severely affected island fisheries and forced islanders to evacuate.

Stress Reaction Gene Tied to Heart Attacks

By Traci Pedersen Associate News Editor Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on December 28, 2013

A genetic variant known to make some people hypersensitive to stress is also linked to a 38 percent increased risk of heart attack or death in patients with heart disease, according to researchers at Duke Medicine.

Weve heard a lot about personalized medicine in cancer, but in cardiovascular disease we are not nearly as far along in finding the genetic variants that identify people at higher risk, said senior author Redford B. Williams Jr., M.D., director of the Behavioral Medicine Research Center at Duke University School of Medicine.

Here we have a paradigm for the move toward personalized medicine in cardiovascular disease.

The researchers built on previous work at Duke and elsewhere that identified a variation in a DNA sequence, known as a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), where one letter in the genetic code is swapped for another to change the genes function. The team focused on a particular SNP that occurs on the gene that makes a serotonin receptor and causes a hyperactive reaction to stress.

In a previous study, researchers found that men with this genetic variant had twice as much cortisol in their blood when exposed to stress, compared to men without the variant. The stress hormonecortisol is produced in the adrenal gland to support the bodys biological response when reacting to a situation that causes negative emotions.

It is known that cortisol has effects on the bodys metabolism, on inflammation and various other biological functions, that could play a role in increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease, said lead author Beverly H. Brummett, Ph.D., associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Duke.

It has been shown that high cortisol levels are predictive of increased heart disease risk. So we wanted to examine this more closely.

The exciting part to me this is that this genetic trait occurs in a significant proportion of people with heart disease, Brummett said. If we can replicate this and build on it, we may be able to find ways to reduce the cortisol reaction to stress either through behavior modification or drug therapies and reduce deaths from heart attack.

Researchers used a database to run a genetic analysis of more than 6,100 white participants, two-thirds of whom were men, and one-third women. About 13 percent of this group had the genetic variation for the overactive stress response.

FUTURIST: Nobody Will Be Driving Gas Cars In Two Years

REUTERS/Lucy Nicholson

Elon Musk, the CEO and founder of Tesla motors.

And futurist Lars Thomsen thinks that electric cars are such a disruptive technology that they will make gasoline cars obsolete--starting in 2016, or much earlier than most other analysts suggest.

Thomsen delivered a speech this past September, at the25th International AVL Conference Engine & Environment in Graz, Austria, that's contained in the clip below.

It's also in German, which may make the 36-minute-long video a bit impenetrable for non-German speakers.

But Thomsen suggests that electric cars are a sufficiently disruptive technology that they will lead to quick behavior changes by consumers in the market forautomobiles.

He uses the example of Nokia as a cautionary tale, noting that less than 10 years ago, that company dominated the world market for mobile phones.

In June 2007, Apple released its first-generation iPhone, a radical new entry from a company that for three decades had confined itself to personal computers and portable music devices.

The iPhone was such a radical rethinking of what a phone should be and how it should operate--essentially a small Internet-connected computer, operated via a touchscreen, that also provided voice calls--that it completely reset the market's vision of what a "mobile phone" should be.
