For some guys, Nuclear Cowboyz motocross show is heaven on wheels

With scantily clad women, towers of fire, lasers, a cyborg army, loud music and even louder motorcycles, the Nuclear Cowboyz freestyle motocross tour might just be man heaven.

The pretense of the show is that teams of stunt riders are in a battle against evil legions directed by a villainous woman but, really, it's all about the bikes.

Motorcycles and four-wheelers fly through the air as riders stretch, leap and contort above them in an athletic, gasoline-powered ballet that makes them appear suspended, weightless, for an instant.

"It's part X Games and part circus," rider Mike Mason said.

Mason and the other riders, all veterans of the motocross world, perform hundreds of freestyle tricks in a fast-paced adrenaline parade to a soundtrack of heavy metal, electronic dubstep and hip-hop. And don't forget the weapon-wielding "kung fu warriors."

Mason, who has won seven medals in the X Games extreme sports competition, said he thinks the warriors might be real monks. But he's not sure. They don't speak English, and he doesn't speak Chinese. But, he said, "they are a bunch of little Asian dudes ripping around with swords and stuff."

The warriors are an addition to the 2014 tour, which debuts in Lexington before heading to at least 15 more cities through April.

"It's been a crazy couple of weeks for us," said Mason, 32, whose laid-back vibe is in keeping with his bio of a guitar-strumming guy who likes to have a few beers with his buds.

Mason said he has been on a bike almost since he could walk. His entire family was into motocross. He never imagined that he'd do it for a living, much less find a gig after he finished competing. The freestyle moves he does along with the other riders have been perfected over years of practice.

Parks & Beaches OKs first Children’s Pool project expenditures

The La Jolla Parks and Beaches community advisory committee held a special meeting Dec. 23 to discuss plans for the Childrens Pool Walk beautification project and get updates on related money matters.

With just over $250,000 in the bank thanks largely to a $200,000 donation from La Jolla resident Tom Morgan the board needed to approve spending some of that money on the services of design architect Jim Neri.

Through a statement read by LJP&B member Phyllis Minick, Neri requested the board approve $51,311 in additional fees for the design development, engineering, construction documents, plan processing, permit fees, BID administration and construction services, as submitted in the Dec. 12, 2013 proposal by Neri Landscape Architecture (NLA).

The LJP&B board, to cover any additional and unforeseen fees, voted to approve an amount not to exceed $55,000 to be paid to NLA. Neri said he would offer a fee reduction because he believes this project should come to fruition.

Since this is a community-funded project in my own community, NLA is discounting our fees 20 percent and is not charging the customary 10 percent markup of our consultant fees, saving $6,500 in fees for the construction of this much-needed project, his statement read.

While one set of fees was reduced, another increased. Minick reported that city permit costs have increased by 20 percent since the projects inception three years ago, which translates into $53,000.

However, Minick said she received a letter from the city indicating that $70,000 would be available in mid-2014, and another $30,000 might also become available. Should we laugh or cry? she joked, reflecting on the three years spent and dozens of grant proposals submitted for this project. We thank (District 1 City Councilmember) Sherri Lightner for getting this done.

Minick said, on the advice of some board members, that she will request $70,000 be used to cover city-permit costs.

Sherwin-Williams Announces 2014 Aerospace Coatings Training Program

Andover, Kan. - Continuous training for todays aerospace coatings painting professionals is required to stay current on the most up-to-date products and application methods available in the maintenance repair and operations industry. So when they participate in the new 2014 aerospace coatings training program from Sherwin-Williams they will expand their skill sets: from applying new chrome and lead hazard free surface treatments and primer systems; to spraying the latest in technology-driven high-quality topcoats.

The company announces its extensive 2014 training program schedule, which includes a series of two-day classes on: February 12-13, April 16-17; June 18-19; Sept. 17-18; and Nov. 5-6. All classes will be held in the Sherwin-Williams Andover (Wichita) Kan. training facilities.

This particular training will now include work with SKYscapes, a new basecoat/clearcoat exterior paint system that delivers fast processing time, improved color and gloss retention, and easy maintenance. Training and mastering the SKYscapes paint system will allow aviation maintenance repair facilities and their paint shops to augment production schedules and turnaround more paint jobs.

Our two-day training programs are designed for all levels of paint shop personnel, says Julie Voisin, Sherwin-Williams Product Manager for Aerospace Coatings. New technicians can become better acquainted with our products and the best application techniques, while seasoned pros can take time to refine their skills in an actual shop setting. Our goal is to have every participant leave with inspiration and ideas to help them create the best paint jobs possible back at their own shops, on every plane, every time.

All training sessions will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. A per-person registration fee of $299 includes classroom and hands-on training with skilled industry professionals; a training book and related materials; all necessary safety equipment; catered lunch each day; and certified training certificate. The training center is equipped with many types of spray equipment, including electrostatic guns. However, attendees may bring their own spray equipment if they prefer.

A PARKINSONS Disease sufferer from York is to travel to Kiev for pioneering stem cell treatment, in a last-ditch bid to tackle his worsening condition.

James DeLittle, 49, hopes the two-day treatment in the Ukrainian capital will lessen his symptoms, which include poor balance, tremor, difficulties controlling his limbs and slurred speech.

Jamess mother, relatives and customers at three pubs in the York and Selby area have scraped together about 7,000 to pay for foetal stem cells to be injected into his stomach and arms.

His condition has worsened significantly in recent months, causing him to fall several times, suffering injuries including a broken nose, ribs and thumb joint.

James, of Broadway West in Fulford, said: As far as I know, Im the first person from the UK to go to the clinic and I would love to come back with an improvement in my condition to show all the other people with Parkinsons how they might benefit too.

The NHS doesnt support the treatment at this stage so weve had to raise the money.

More than 700 has been raised by bottles on the bars at the Huntsman at Drax, and the Plough Inn and the Bay Horse at Fulford.
