January 13, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets With the Comet players on the road, en route to Oklahoma and the southwestern area of the country last week, the Comets front office staff seized the opportunity to take in some of the United States' finest hockey history in Lake Placid, New York.

The Comets front office staff members the three-hour drive north to Lake Placid, New York, which played host to 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. The three day trip marked not only an enjoyable time for Utica's staff but also a retreat to increase team unity away from an office setting.

Everyone arrived late Sunday afternoon amidst the NFL's wild card playoff games and the staff exchanged their secret santa gifts as the holiday season finally came to a close for the Comets, following a nine game home stand. With a fun exchange based primarily on "inside jokes", the gift giving was a bonding experience for everyone and whipped an already tight knit staff that much closer together.

As Colin Kaepernick led the 49ers down the field on a game winning drive, the front office staff walked across Mirror Lake and enjoyed a dinner at the luxurious Lake Placid Boat House Club, before a night in a snowy, but beautiful Lake Placid town. An early set of meetings followed the ensuing morning, where a variety of topics were discussed on how to make the Comets experience even better for the fans.

With temperatures north of forty and rain on the way down, the Comets staff was deprived of a day of skiing at Whiteface Mountain or a game of pond hockey on the lake. Many employees used their free time to walk to and visit the historic Olympic Center in the middle of the town.

Inside were the two hockey rinks from the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Games, as well as a third rink that doubled as a curling facility. The 1932 rink was home to a Canadian gold medal, as our neighbors to the North finished with 11 points, two ahead of the United States who won silver. Despite playing home to many elite international players in the past, the 1932 Rink hosts mainly youth competition these days.

Appropriately, the 1980 rink was the star attraction, with everyone being a huge fan of the Miracle on Ice that occurred between the United States and Soviet Union during the medal round. The United States won gold in the following game on home ice against Finland, which completed the greatest upset in sports history. A trip to Lake Placid would never be complete without seeing where Herb Brooks and the boys completed the miracle, 33 years ago.

In addition to the arenas, the speed skating oval where Eric Heiden collected five gold medals was located directly out front. An exciting tour for the Comets staff was complete with a trip to the USA Hockey store to stock up for the incoming Sochi Olympics.

Despite a great time had by the Comets front office, Streamline Concepts, the local company that produces all the Comets videos, Chuck Obernesser and Jim Raymer felt excluded from the Comets plans. What resulted, toed the line between lyrical genius and utter chaos and for one small window, The AUD was under new management.

Tonight's Game: The Utica Comets conclude their four game road trip as they visit the AT&T Center for a showdown with the San Antonio Rampage. The Comets, who are 0-2-1-0 on the swing thus far, will look to break an overall four game losing streak, which dates back to Jan. 3 against Rochester.

When They Last Met: Tonight is the first ever meeting between the Comets and Rampage.

Comets Outlook: The Comets mounted a valiant come from behind effort, but it came up just short in a 5-3 defeat to the Texas Stars. The Comets scored three straight goals to cut a four-goal deficit to one, but a late empty net marker for Texas sealed Utica's fourth straight defeat. Cal O'Reilly paced the Comets with two points (1-1-2), while Alexandre Grenier and Brandon DeFazio also scored for Utica.Travis Morin, the AHL's leading scorer, led the way for the Stars with a natural hat trick to open the game. Utica goaltender Mathieu Corbeil made his season debut in relief of Joe Cannata and was a perfect 18 of 18.

Rampage Outlook: San Antonio dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to the Abbotsford Heat at the AT&T Center on Saturday evening. Vincent Trocheck and Garrett Wilson each scored for San Antonio, which dropped its 14th game of its past 17 games played. Defenseman Matt Gilroy recorded a multi-point game (0-2-2), while goaltender Jacob Markstrom recorded 23 saves on 26 shots.

Talking Bout My Greneration: Alexandre Grenier has surged into the team lead with now 11 goals on the season, after his tally against the Stars on Saturday. Grenier, who is tied for 15th in the AHL in rookie scoring with 23 points (11-12-23), has recorded 10 points over his past 10 games.

Supreme Corb: Goaltender Mathieu Corbeil made his debut in a big way, with a perfect 18 saves on 18 shots in relief of Joe Cannata. Corbeil, who saw nearly 26 minutes against Texas, made his debut on his seventh AHL recall between Utica this season and Chicago last. Corbeil was also recalled to the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets in 2011, but did not play.

Simple Yann: Defenseman Yann Sauve has recorded assists in each of his past three contests, giving him eight for the season. The Comets' assistant captain has recorded a +1 rating in the past 12 games, following a healthy scratch on Dec. 7 against Adirondack.

Remember the days when a fanny pack and a "game face" could protect you from getting your money stolen? We don't either! Vacationers have always been targets for smart, enterprising crooks, and the farther you get from home, the easier it is to fall for popular vacation scams like the dropped baby, the fake fight, and the I-need-five-euros-to-replace-my-lost-train-ticket. But these days, you are at risk for more than just some lost bills. Watch out for these scams from around the world that can put your personal safety--and even your very identity--at risk.

Orlando

Here's a scam so bad even Mickey Mouse took a stand. Guests in hotels around Disney World have been finding pizza delivery menus conveniently slipped under their doors, but place an order--and make the mistake of giving your credit card number--and you'll really pay. The phone number isn't connected to a pizza parlor but to identity thieves. Disney World supported a law designed to crack down on the people handing out the fliers, but Orlando police say the problem persists.

In Vietnam, open-ended bus tickets are the best way to travel at your own pace between Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, and the Sinh Tourist line is widely considered the best. So widely considered, in fact, its many impostors call themselves Sinh Tourist, too. Because of Vietnam's lax intellectual property laws, it's difficult to know which Sinh is the real deal. Take the wrong carrier, and you'll get iffy service or, worse, an unexpected overnight stop at an overpriced hotel in cahoots with the bus line. "In summary," said Stuart McDonald of travelfish.org, a travel advice site that covers Southeast Asia, "it is a snake pit!"

But once the disc is in your hands, the aspiring rapper--suddenly surrounded by friends--refuses to take it back. You need to pay $10 or so to stop them from menacing you.

New app let’s users monitor their spirituality in real time

Folks who have just knocked back two drinks say they're really aware of God at that moment.

And good sleep enhances a sense of God, joy, peace and love.

Who knew?

Actually, about 160 people, so far, know such details about their spiritual lives. They were the first participants in SoulPulse, a newly launched on-going study of spirituality in daily life.

It's an "experiential" research survey inspired by pastor/author John Ortberg and conducted by a team led by Bradley Wright, an associate professor of sociology at University of Connecticut and author of "Christians Are Hate-Filled Hypocrites ... and Other Lies You've Been Told."

Twice a day for two weeks, participants receive questions asking about their experiences of spirituality, their emotions, activities and more at the moment the text messages arrive.

SERIOUS QUESTIONS

Were they feeling satisfied, loved, happy, hostile, sleepy or stressed? Were they more or less aware of God when they were commuting or computing or hanging out with family and friends?

The participants so far are too few and too similar to draw national trend data; they're chiefly highly educated evangelicals who know Wright or Ortberg, pastor of Menlo Park (Calif.) Presbyterian Church and their friends. But Wright's team aims to have 10,000 people enroll at SoulPulse.org over the next three years. Their answers will be aggregated to look for overall trends.

"The idea came to me because I'm interested in psychology, spirituality and the nature of the human condition," said Ortberg, who also has a doctorate in psychology.

Christmas delivery finally arrives at the space station

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. The six space station astronauts finally got their Christmas presents Sunday with the arrival of a privately launched supply ship that took an extra month to soar.

The spacemen opened the capsule a day early and started removing items, as soon as the Orbital Sciences Corp. vessel was moored safely at the International Space Station. Packed inside were 3,000 pounds of groceries, equipment and experiments, as well as eagerly awaited Christmas gifts from their families back home and some fresh fruit courtesy of NASA.

Among the first things out: ants that are part of an educational project.

NASA is relying on private industry to keep the orbiting lab well stocked in this post-shuttle era and, in three or four more years, possibly supply rides for U.S. astronauts as well. This was Orbital Sciences' second shipment.

The Virginia company was supposed to make the latest delivery last month, well before Christmas, but had to wait for reasons beyond its control. A space station breakdown in mid-December took priority, and NASA bumped the flight to January in order to repair the disabled cooling system at the orbiting outpost.

Then frigid weather at the launch site at Wallops Island, Va., forced a delay. Then a strong solar storm interfered. Everything finally came together for a smooth liftoff on Thursday.

Flight controllers for Orbital Sciences, wearing red company shirts, broke into applause when astronaut Michael Hopkins used the space station's main robot arm to grab onto the Cygnus capsule, more than 260 miles above the Indian Ocean, northeast of Madagascar. Within two hours, the capsule was bolted to the station. And four hours after that, the astronauts threw open the hatch.

Because of the long day, the astronauts were supposed to wait until Monday before opening the capsule. But with presents from their families awaiting them, they couldn't resist.

As a holiday treat, NASA stashed away the fruit for the two Americans, three Russians and one Japanese, and Orbital Sciences included a few surprises of its own.

"It was difficult keeping up with you today," Mission Control radioed. "You guys were blazing."

Red Hat and CentOS: A Great Thing or a Gates Thing?

"Did everybody forget Bill Gates' 'If they are gonna pirate, I want them to pirate from us' bit?" Slashdot blogger hairyfeet warned. "Every one using Cent is NOT using Ubuntu; more importantly, they are learning the RH way of doing things. I have no doubt Red Hat will begin offering support contracts for CentOS, as well as an upgrade option. Better they learn RH than learn Debian."

There's no doubt privacy is a highly pertinent goal for 2014, but partnership and collaboration are nothing to sneeze at, either.

That's why the news out of North Carolina last week was so exciting.

"Red Hat and the CentOS Project today announced they are joining forces to build a new CentOS," the press release began, "capable of driving forward development and adoption of next-generation open source technologies."

Yes, that's right -- Linux heavyweight Red Hat and RHEL-based community distro CentOS are teaming up, leaving more than a few heads spinning -- on Slashdot and down at the Linux blogosphere's Broken Windows Lounge.

'Godspeed the New Meta-Distro'

"I think it's a fantastic idea," consultant and Slashdot blogger Gerhard Mack told Linux Girl. "Not everyone wants the full service package of RHEL, but they definitely need security updates."

Indeed, "this kind of forces-joining is what I have dreamed for every GNU/Linux distro family, as opposed to the 'I fork it because I can' policy," enthused Google+ blogger Gonzalo Velasco C.

"CentOS is a successful communitarian GNU/Linux distribution, and everyone knows how much success Red Hat has as an enterprise, even though they have the well-developed community branch Fedora," Gonzalo Velasco C. pointed out.

Awards season officially kicked off on Sunday (January 12) with the 71st annual Golden Globe Awards. Hollywood's A-listers from movies and television came together to swarm the red carpet, but the star that stood out above the rest had to be the fashion.

On a night when glitz, glamour and elegance are always on full display, this year's looks did not disappoint. Stars took risks with their looks, donning shimmering metallic gowns, nude dresses and a whole lot of red.

Amy Adams, Taylor Swift and Julia Louis-Dreyfus all opted to wear red on the red carpet, but it was "12 Years a Slave" actress Lupita Nyong'o who perfected the look. Wearing a striking Ralph Lauren caped gown, Nyong'o instantly turned into a household name and a budding fashion icon.

"This gorgeous red dress with this crazy cape, actually very simple and it just complements the tone of her skin," Jarvis Derrell from the blog She Has Had It told MTV News. "I just wanted to know who this girl was."

Nyong'o's competition for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, Jennifer Lawrence, who crashed Swift's red carpet interview before winning her award, wowed once again in a white Dior strapless gown separated by black bands.

"I love Jennifer Lawrence. She's like America's favorite stepsister. She is so quirky and funny, and then she changes it up with the pixie haircut, which looks great in this gown," Derrell said. "She can do no wrong for me on the red carpet."

A dominating trend on the red carpet had to be a very big accessory: the baby bump. Drew Barrymore sported a floral Monique Lhuillier look, while Olivia Wilde simply sparkled in an emerald Gucci gown. But it was "Scandal" star Kerry Washington who may have stolen the show as she confirmed her pregnancy on the carpet while glowing in Balenciaga.
