Comets continue to roll

FULTON After handing West Central a sound thumping last Friday night, the Caston Comets seem to be finding a groove, winning three of their last four games. The offensive apprehension that the young Comets showed earlier in the season has subsided, and the new up-tempo style has finally harvested success on the floor.

Combine that with a revitalized effort on the boards and sound halfcourt defense, and J.R. Howells squad may be poised for a midseason run.

Conversely, North Miamis struggles continue as the Warriors entered Tuesday nights game in Fulton at 1-8. The Warriors lone victory came against Whitko in overtime on Dec. 28, and their eight losses have been by an average of 22 points per game. The slump doesnt stop there. The Warriors have won just six games dating back to Nov. 2011.

This one was decided by a 14-3 run by the Comets to close out the third period, and they went on to a 69-56 home victory.

The Comets (6-5) jumped out to an early 15-8 lead, only to give up two 3-pointers by Warrior seniors Alex Borse and Keith Rouch to close the gap to 15-14 at the end of the first. North Miami proceeded to take their first and final lead of the game at the start of the second after a basket by senior Damon Gipson. Consecutive 3s by Eli Douglass and Brayton Jellison, sandwiched between Quentin Douglass layups gave Caston a 26-19 lead midway through the period. Borse finished the quarter with a three-point play to draw North Miami within 6 at half.

One reason for the improved play has to be the recent performance of sophomore Brayton Jellison. The 6-2 forward has been a rebounding magnet, which has given the Comets a lift on both ends of the floor. With Quentin Douglass drawing attention from opposing defenses, Jellison has also flourished in the scoring column, scoring 14 against West Central and 17 more Tuesday. He added 12 rebounds for his second straight double-double.

I think we are starting to come together as a team. Everyone is going all out everyday, and doing their part, said Jellison.

After distributing to teammates in the first and second periods, Douglass started attacking the lane with success. The senior scored the final 5 points of the third, helping push Caston to a commanding 51-38 lead.

Another Borse 3 cut the lead to 10 early in the fourth. He finished with a team-high 15 points for the Warriors. Douglass scored six of his game-high 23 points in the final quarter, ensuring that there would be no comeback. The third Comet in double figures was junior Dustin Offenberger, who finished with 13.

Everyone that played tonight was productive. We moved the ball well and got solid minutes from our bench, said Howell.

Comets Corner: the Secret Workings of a Game Day

January 14, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets When most Comets fans attend a game here at The AUD, they come to watch the team play. But what a lot of people don't realize is how much work goes into the making of a game day here possible. This week, I sat down with our director of Game Operations, Gina Nassivera, our Graphic Designer and Production Assistant, Eric Kowiatek and our Director of Communications, Mark Caswell Jr., to give you a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes here at the The AUD.

Gina, the Comets Director of Game Operations, is the one responsible for making Comets games happen. She directs everything that goes on during pregame and game time, including commercials, in-game promotions and music. "My priority is making sure that I'm creating a fun, entertaining atmosphere to keep the fans coming back for more than just the product on the ice," Gina said. She also wants to keep a healthy balance between current songs, movie clips, dances and old-time traditions, since The AUD is such a historical hockey building. Most people do not notice just how much time and effort goes into planning what song to play at what time or what in-game promotion will get the crowd the most pumped.

Pregame National Anthem is one part of Gina's gameday

For Gina, a typical game day consists of a lot of planning, coordinating and communication. "Pregame is planned to the minutes and seconds," she explained. "It's especially challenging when we add a pregame ceremony. We have to make sure we abide by American Hockey League guidelines to ensure that we drop the puck on time." Gina also works closely with Eric, our graphic designer, the video board director, camera crew, PA announcer and in-game host to make sure everyone knows the script and game plan for the night. The script, which is unique to each and every Comets game, includes exactly when each PA read, commercial, video or promo will air during the game. Since no whistle is planned out, Gina and her team need to constantly think on their feet to pick appropriate and exciting content for the video boards. "Those video boards are a huge part of our game experience here," Gina stated. "We want to make sure we use those to the best of our ability and show the fans in Utica things they've never seen at hockey games before."

Working in close contact with Gina is the Comets graphic designer, Eric Kowiatek. Eric is in charge of creating all graphics that appear on the video board throughout the game. "A typical game day requires me going through my e-mail and spreadsheets to find the necessary information to set up graphics for that game," Eric explained. "After everything gets loaded into Click Effects, our computer program, we have a pregame meeting to review the script and make sure we're all on the same page." In terms of pregame responsibilities, Eric designs a custom downtime playlist for the videoboards that rotates when people are entering and exiting the building.

Eric's graphics dress up the videoboard

Eric also has to think on his feet, as graphics often need to be created on the spot. "During the game, I have to set up miscellaneous graphics for scores, 50/50 winners and impromptu graphics that will entertain the crowd," he stated. Birthday announcements, upcoming games, Hawaiian Holiday Utica Comettes, and group night graphics are all created by Eric prior to the game and placed on the video board during times specified in the script, created by Gina. Other graphics, such as the 50/50 winning number, and Out of Town AHL Scoreboard, are created on the spot in-game. Gina and Eric work side-by-side to make sure that corporate sponsors are pleased, as well as Comets fans looking for an entertaining evening.

Finally, the inner workings of the game would not be possible without Mark Caswell Jr., the Comets Director of Communications. Mark's responsibilities are endless, ranging from Community Relations to Public Relations to working closely with the players and coaches, as well as the media and press. But game days are the busiest for Mark, as he has to balance numerous tasks throughout the long workday. "Typically, I get to the rink by 7:30 in the morning in order to prepare league paperwork for coaches, players and media," Mark explained. "It's a long, but fun day." Mark also described how things never go exactly according to plan, and he has to make sure the spontaneous problems and issues that pop up are dealt with accordingly.

As Director of Communications, Mark is in constant contact with the press, media, and other members of the Comets game day staff, such as Gina and Eric. Mark usually roams the concourse, making sure everything is running smoothly and that people are complaint-free. He also works in close contact with the voice of the Comets, broadcaster Brendan Burke, to make sure the visiting team has a hassle-free experience at The AUD. Mark is the man behind social media and the with the Comets, so he has detailed plans of what needs to go on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram during pregame, game time and postgame.

Without Gina, Eric, Mark and countless other members of the Comets staff, Comets fans would not have the full fan experience here at the Utica Auditorium. Next time you come down to The AUD for a Comets game, pay close attention to the little things you may not have noticed, and think of Gina in the press box, Eric in the production suite and Mark somewhere in the building, making sure your fan experience is a memory that will last a lifetime.

Comets Streak Late, Lose

The Stew-Stras Comets scored 22 points in the 4th on Friday and 18 points in the 4th on Saturday, but still lost both games. Friday they lost to St. Elmo-Brownstown, 75-59, and on Saturday to Mt. Pulaksi, 58-53.

On Friday, a 2nd period, 27-14 run by St. Elmo/Brownstown provided the cushion for the win. Stew-Stras lost every quarter by a bit, but that 2nd period created a hole too big to fill. Stew-Stras trailed by 14 at the break, 39-25, and lost by 16.

St. Elmo stretched their lead to 18 points heading into the 4th, 55-37. The Comets streaked for 22 points in the final 8:00, but St. Elmo stayed with them, scoring 20, and secured the 16-point win.

Brandon Helmuth led Stew-Stras with 16 points, but St. Elmos three leading scorers all had 16 points or better. Maxey scored a game-high 23 points with a trey and 6-of-6 at the line. Feezel and Behrends followed with 16 points, each. Feezel had a trey and 3-of-6 at the line. Behrends had two treys and was 4-of-4 at the line.

Bryse Bugger followed Helmuth with 14 points, all from the floor, while Jason Fry had 11, all for the floor, including a trey. Helmuth also recorded eight rebounds and six assists.

St. Elmo/Brownstown had advantages at the arc and the foul line padding their lead.

Comets fall to Rampage in shootout

SAN ANTONIO, Texas The Utica Comets poured on the pucks at the San Antonio Rampages net all night, but goalie Jacob Markstrom stopped all but two of the Comets 36 shots, including all five during a shootout, to lead his team to a 3-2 victory on Monday night.

The Rampage tallied back-to-back goals in the first period to jump to a 2-0 advantage off the sticks of Quinton Howden and Jared Gomes, before the Comets jumped on the scoreboard 16:22 into the game.

Markstrom turned aside Benn Ferrieros shot off the rebound, but Nicklas Jensens follow up was too much to stop.

The game would remain locked at 2-1 until 13:21 of the third period with the Comets firing an onslaught of shots, including a 10-0 advantage to open the period until Jensen found the back of the net again.

Kent Huskins blasted a knuckling shot on net, Markstrom saved the initial shot, but Jensen was there to tuck in the rebound. Henrik Tommernes picked up the secondary assist. The goal was Nicklas Jensens fifth goal in four games.

San Antonios Bobby Butler was the shootouts lone scorer, as he fired a wrist shot past the blocker of Comets goaltender Mathieu Corbeil in the third round of the shootout.

Corbeil stopped 21 of 23 shots in his first career American Hockey League start.

The Comets wrapped up their road trip with a 0-1-1-1 record and fell to 11-19-2-3 on the season. They return home to take on the Albany Devils Friday night at The Aud at 7 p.m.
