The Chicago Board of Education Wednesday approved proposals for seven new charter schools to open over the next two years, sparking some outcry from those wondering how the district could close dozens of neighborhood schools then open new charters.

This is a complex situation, Board of Education President David Vitale said. When we are making these decisions, it does affect neighborhoods. It does affect schools we understand that.

Our goal is for quality schools. Theres been an agnosticism towards the form of the schools, but there is a strong belief that charters do provide quality just like contract schools and just as importantly ... as our regular schools.

But Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis called the boards approval of new charters hypocritical.

Freedom to choose is at the bedrock of our society, she said, but choice should be based on fact and data. What is being presented is a false choice. Knowledge is the basis for real choice. What parents and the public are being presented with is a pre-determined path that leads to the undermining of our neighborhood schools and the privatization of public education.

Newswise Robert T. Dirksen, PhD, Department of Pharmacology and Physiology at University of Rochester Medical Center has been newly appointed to Chair the Professional Advisory Council (PAC) of the Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the United States (MHAUS).

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Robert Dirksen, Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Physiology at University of Rochester, has been appointed as Chair to the Professional Advisory Council (PAC) of the Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the United States (MHAUS), says MHAUS President Henry Rosenberg, MD.

Dr. Dirksen is an outstanding scientist who has focused much of his scientific efforts on understanding the underlying defects in skeletal muscle in patients with Malignant Hyperthermia, Myotonic Dystrophy and Central Core Disease among others. His particular focus has been on understanding the control Calcium movements in muscle and the relation of Calcium movements to abnormal muscle function. His work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Muscular Dystrophy Association among others. He has published over 80 articles in leading scientific journals in addition to many abstracts, book chapters, and invited lectures.

As Chair of the Professional Advisory Council, Bob will work closely with the President, Executive Director, and Board of MHAUS to assess strengths/opportunities for the PAC; assign specific topics or documents requested for review to the PAC; synthesize PAC comments; keep the Board of Directors updated on research which has the potential to enhance MHAUS mission; advise on parameters for PAC membership and terms of service on the PAC; and be a member of the organizing committee for future scientific conferences.

What is Malignant Hyperthermia Malignant Hyperthermia (MH) is inherited genetic disorder found in an estimated 1 out of 2,000 people and triggered by certain anesthetics and/or the drug succinylcholine and most often experienced in individuals undergoing routine surgery but in rare cases MH can happen without anesthesia. The disorder is due to abnormally increased levels of cell calcium in the skeletal muscle. Symptoms include body temperature of up to 107 degrees, muscle rigidity, system-wide organ failure, and possible death.

There is mounting evidence that some patients will also develop MH with exercise and/or on exposure to hot environments. Without proper and prompt treatment with dantrolene sodium, mortality is extremely high.

In 1981 they found each other - and a doctor performing MH testing and agreed to make current information about MH available to all who need it!

Montgomery Blair produces 3 Intel finalists

Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring is boasting three finalists in the Intel Science Talent Search, the countrys oldest and most prestigious research contest for high school seniors.

The three Montgomery Blair students tapped by the Intel Foundation as finalists in this years competition are:

Shaun Datta, whose research project is Saturated Nuclear Matter in the Large Nc and Heavy Quark Limits of Quantum Chromodynamics

Neil Davey, with Early Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment through the Detection of Circulating Tumor Cells using Drop-based Microfluidics

Jessica Shi, with The Speeds of Families of Intersection Graphs

In addition, Benjamin Freed, a student at Governor Thomas Johnson High School in Frederick, also has been named a finalist. His project is Identification of Novel Regulatory Mechanisms of the K-Ras Oncoprotein.

There were no finalists from Virginia.

The Intel Science Talent Search, a program of Society for Science & the Public (SSP), chose 40 finalists from about 1,800 entrants across the country. They were judged on the originality of their research projects as well as their achievement inside and outside the classroom, according to contest organizers.

The finalists created projects that touched a variety of scientific disciplines, including behavioral science, biochemistry, bioengineering, chemistry, computer science, earth science, engineering, environmental science, materials science, mathematics, medicine, microbiology, physics and space science.

The 40 finalists will gather in Washington March 6 to 12 to compete for $630,000 in awards. They will undergo a judging process, meet prominent scientists and national leaders and show their work to the public at the National Geographic Society.
