January 23, 2014 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Missouri Comets INDEPENDENCE, Missouri (January 23, 2013) - The Missouri Comets are set to face the St. Louis Ambush on Friday, January 24th at 7:35p.m. CT. This match is the Comets 4th Annual Retro Game, sponsored by FreeStyle Graphics. The team will be wearing jerseys inspired by the 1985 Kansas City Comets. Halftime will also feature an exhibition match between Comets and Kansas City Attack alumni, including Ryan Junge, Jim Schwab, Chris Damico, Kim Roentved and many more.
This will be the fourth matchup in the season series between the Comets and Ambush. Missouri has won all three previous games by a combined 60-30 score. The Ambush were able to take the Comets to overtime on November 29th, but Stefan St. Louis closed out the victory for Missouri less than three minutes into the extra period. These two teams are playing for the I-70 Series trophy, sponsored by Independence Tourism. A win on Friday would clinch the trophy and the season series for the Comets.
The Comets have relied on their powerful offense all season. Currently they lead the league in scoring with 198 points, averaging 15.23 per game. Captain Vahid Assadpour leads all scorers with 17 goals and 51 points, despite playing through illness in his last two matches. Leo Gibson is in second place with 44 points, while four other Comets also find themselves among the league's top 25 scorers.
While the Comets are known for their scoring prowess, the team will have to step up defensively against St. Louis' aggressive attack. Forward Kory Dowell shares the league lead for three-point goals with five. Former Baker University standout, Odaine Sinclair, leads the Ambush in scoring with ten goals, with half of those coming against the Comets.
The soccer action does not stop when the Comets and Ambush take their halftime break. Many former Comets and Attack players will play an exhibition at halftime, including legends Jeff Davis, Alan Mayer, Warren Westcoat and more.
Following the match, fans will be able to take home a game-worn jersey from their favorite current Comets player in a LIVE auction. After the auction, current and former players will be signing autographs on the field.
Kickoff for tomorrow night's match is scheduled for 7:35p.m. CT at the Independence Events Center. For tickets and information, call 855.4KC.GOAL.

UTICA The Utica Comets picked up their second victory in a row as they defeated the Chicago Wolves 2-1, in the inaugural meeting between the two franchises on Tuesday at the Utica Memorial Auditorium during an American Hockey League matchup.
In a battle of familiar faces with 11 of Uticas 24 skaters being Wolves last season, the Comets came out on top to earn their first set of back-to-back wins of 2014.
Frank Corrado and Benn Ferriero each scored for the Comets, who improved to 13-20-2-3 this season. Joacim Eriksson, in his first start with the Comets after a brief stint with Vancouver, made 22 of 23 saves for his ninth victory of the season.
Chicago got on the scoreboard first, just 1:26 into the second period, courtesy of a deflected effort from Ty Ratties team-leading 14th goal as he got his stick on a point effort from defenseman Taylor Chorney.
Utica leveled the score at the 13:03 mark of the second when Nicklas Jensen took a feed from Cal OReilly to beat Allen for the first time. Jensen caught his teammates pass on his backhand, did a full spin and fired a wrist shot past Allens blocker for his fifth goal over Uticas past six games. Corrado soon gave Utica a lead it would not relinquish with 5:46 left on the clock in the third period. The defenseman took a drop pass from Ferriero at the blueline, which he took into the right hand circle and unleashed over Allens blocker hand.
By defeating the Wolves, Utica moved passed Hartford in the overall league standings and now sit on 31 points for the season.
The Comets make their second trip to Western Canada for a two-game set with the Abbotsford Heat this weekend. Puck drop on both Friday and Saturday are set for 10 p.m.

The Comets were on fire, and Brett Becker's four three-point baskets in the first quarter helped bury the Tipton Tigers Jan. 9 at West Liberty. The Comets won 62-30.
Three Comets were in double figures: Becker scored 24 points, Kyle Miller 14 points and Troy Heick had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
"I thought we played well offensively," West Liberty Head Coach James Laughlin said. "Brett Becker came out shooting the ball well, and it was contagious for us. I think this helped us with some energy on the defensive end and led to some steals with easy baskets on the other end. We gave up too many offensive rebounds; that is something we will need to continue to work on."
First Quarter
Heick's tip to start the game went to Miller. Becker hit his first three-pointer just eight seconds into the game for a 3-0 West Liberty lead.
The Tigers turned the ball over, and Becker scored on a turnaround jumper. The Tigers got two tries at a basket and then got fouled. They made both free throws for a 5-2 score.
Brady Smith scored in the paint, assist Miller. Heick got a steal, but the Comets turned the ball over. Each team got a defensive rebound, then the Tigers were fouled. They missed both free throws, and Heick got the rebound.
Miller was fouled on a shot. He made the second of two free throws. Tipton turned the ball over and Miller scored, assist Becker. Heick got a defensive rebound and Miller made a layup for a 12-2 West Liberty lead with 4:42 left in the first quarter.
Tipton took a time out. Anderson tipped the inbounds pass to Becker, but the Tigers got a defensive rebound. Tipton was fouled on a shot and made both free throws. Each team turned the ball over, then Heick scored in the paint.
Ryan Alpen picked up a loose ball, then the Tigers got a rebound. Heick got a block and Tipton was fouled on a shot. The Tigers made the first free throw and missed the second. Luke Seele got the rebound and Becker hit a three-point basket with 2:51 on the clock for a 17-5 lead.

January 22, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets Tuesday's game the Chicago Wolves officially marked the halfway point of the Comets inaugural season. Here is the first half of the Comets Top 10 Most Memorable Moments from the First Half of the Year.
10. Nicklas Jensen Breaks Out. Nicklas Jensen had a monumental performance against the Lake Erie Monsters on December 15. The winger finally broke his goal scoring drought, with a second period power-play marker that beat Sami Aittokallio to knot the score at two. With neither team able to score for the remainder of the game, Jensen saved his finest moment for the shootout with a beautiful deke and one-handed finish, which would eventually go down as the game-winning goal. Jensen replicated the same move in the 4-3 shootout loss against the Hamilton Bulldogs.
9. Utica-Syracuse Rivalry Renewed. October 25th was a highly anticipated date on the Utica Comets schedule from the get go. Not only was it the second home game in franchise history, but the opponents were none other than their regional rivals, the Syracuse Crunch, who traveled just down the Thruway for a Friday night showdown at The AUD.
A highly animated crowd of 3,611 was just short of a sellout, but the AUD was rocking to begin a new rivalry with the Crunch. Colin Stuart gave Utica its first ever lead, as he beat Syracuse netminder Cedric Desjardins on a deflected shot from Yann Sauve. Crunch winger Nikita Kucherov was able to level the score midway through the second period, which would account for all of the game's scoring during regulation.
Joacim Eriksson instantly became a fan favorite, as he put in a sparkling 32 save performance between the pipes. In addition to a sprawling pad save to rob Kucherov of a brace at the end of the second period, the Sweden native made an enormous glove save with just three seconds on the clock in overtime to preserve the tie to send the game into a shootout.
With a crowd nearly to capacity all on its feet, Benn Ferriero approached center ice, after Syracuse's Brett Connolly was unsuccessful in his first attempt. Ferriero moved in deftly on Desjardins and put a twisted wrister off the crossbar and in, sparking a roar from the AUD's faithful. Although the Comets would go on to lose, 2-1 in both the shootout and game itself, the team finally found its way into the points category of the standings.
8. "The Hit" Heard "Round the Internet. If you were to simply view the box score, the November 26th game between the Lake Erie Monsters and the Utica Comets was nothing out of the ordinary. So why was it that this particular AHL hockey contest gained national coverage from CBS Sports, Deadspin and USA Today, amongst other nationally recognized media outlets? Two simple words. "The Hit". Utica winger Darren Archibald made waves throughout the hockey world for his check that literally flipped Lake Erie defenseman Karl Stollery. As Stollery rounded the net, he was met by a stout check from the Comets' winger, who flipped Stollery into a full 360-degree somersault. Despite a 3-2 defeat against Lake Erie, Archibald's hit sent the Utica Comets into the national spotlight.
7. Power-Play Goal Streak. If you went to a Comets game at The AUD between November 23rd and January 1st, you would have seen quite a few different things, but each game had one constant. A power-play goal for the home team. The Comets netted at least one goal with the man advantage in ten straight home games, spanning over three months and two calendar years. Utica converted 13 of 47 power-play opportunities over their scoring stretch, good for a 27.6 percent clip, which comes in almost 10 percent higher than their season mark of 17.8 percent.
Utica got power-play goals from seven different sources, led by Alexandre Grenier and Colin Stuart who scored three apiece. Defensemen Henrik Tommernes and Yannick Weber each scored a pair, while Benn Ferriero, Nicklas Jensen and Patrick Mullen each had one. The ten game stretch has accounted for 50% of Utica's overall output this season on the man advantage, with the Comets just 13 of 99 in their other 28 games.
6. The Captain Shines As Clinton Comets Ghosts Watch. December 13th was a special evening for the Comets. After a pre-game ceremony honoring the history of the Comets name with seven Clinton Comets adorning the stage end of The AUD, Utica stepped onto the ice before a fired up crowd to take on the Binghamton Senators. Team captain Colin Stuart opened the scoring just 7:48 into the game, with a power-play marker off of assists from Pascal Pelletier and Darren Archibald.

By Donnabelle L. Gatdula, The Philippine Star
MANILA - Filipinos have been identified as one of the fastest growing travel spenders among emerging markets in 2013, data from the United Nations World Travel Organization (UNWTO) showed.
In a statement, UNWTO said the Philippines outbound expenditure last year grew 18 percent, second highest in the list of top travel spenders following Turkey, which registered a 24 percent growth.
Other emerging markets with substantial growth in outbound expenditure were Qatar (18 percent); Kuwait (15 percent); Indonesia, (15 percent); Ukraine (15 percent); and Brazil (14 percent).
UNWTO noted that international tourist arrivals grew five percent in 2013, reaching a record 1.08 billion arrivals, based on its latest World Tourism Barometer.
UNWTO said growth was realized despite global economic challenges.
These international tourism results were well above expectations, with an additional 52 million international tourists traveling the world in 2013, it said.
For 2014, UNWTO forecasts a four to five percent expansion, above the long term projections.
Demand for international tourism was strongest for destinations in Asia and the Pacific with growth of six percent; Africa, six percent and Europe, five percent.
The leading sub-regions were Southeast Asia, 10 percent; Central and Eastern Europe, seven percent; Southern and Mediterranean Europe, six percent; and North Africa, six percent.
