Why did you decide to go travelling? I had worked in London for four years and was ready for a prolonged break after a family holiday to the West Coast of America that got my travel impulses racing! I also had recently broken up with a long-term girlfriend and was coming to the end of my flat lease. It was fairly impulsive in so much that I made the decision quickly and then that was it but it was thought through. When I had decided to go, I planned a lot to make sure I did everything I could and wanted to when I was away.

Did you go it alone? Was that daunting?I did go alone and that was one of the best decisions I've ever made. It allowed me the freedom to literally do anything that I wanted to from booking a new flight and changing my schedule at moment's notice to deciding what I wanted for dinner! It was daunting though. My first flight took me to Toronto and I had never travelled alone or even stayed in a hostel. Quickly you realise that you're never alone and there are hundreds of people out there like you who want to do some of the things you want to do and you just do them together.

Did you make friends?Yes and yes I think you have to or risk being isolated. The kitchens were always great places to get chatting and within minutes of arriving in a new place, or country for that matter, you've already made new friends. It's just about being able to say 'hi' to a stranger and being open to people doing the same to you. If you're introverted and don't put the effort it, I'm sure you could stay on your own for a long while...

Where did you travel?Canada, USA, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji.

Why Australia, New Zealand and Fiji in particular?I was never really bothered about Australia to be honest but had heard so many great things that I wanted to go to New Zealand and thought it would be silly not to include Oz as I was so close! NZ was always described as a phenomenal place, with so much to see and do, and it really is. Oz is also very cool though and I'm really glad I decided to go there for two months. Travelling up the coast was amazing and led to be camping on Fraser Island, sailing around the Whitsundays and scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef all once in a lifetime stuff. Fiji was obvious. I was flying home via LA so knew I would be travelling over Fiji so thought I'd finish my trip with a holiday from a holiday and island hop in paradise. Not exactly a tough decision to take!

And what were your trip highlights?Scuba diving with bull sharks in Fiji, learning to ski in Whistler, Canada, the Thai beach parties, sky diving, bungee jumping, and simply waking up in a completely new country with just a backpack and hopefully some money!

How did you travel?Every mode of transport going - Flights, cars, buses, boats, seaplanes, trains, and even tuk-tuk. You name it, I took it.

Did you research the trip before you left?Yeah I did quite a lot of research before I left the UK and if I took the trip again I wouldn't do so much because the best research you can do is chat to the people you meet in hostels. They will have pretty much done all the "touristy" things already or know someone who has.

What did that research consist of?Internet, chatting with friends and tips from my travel agent.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) The Seahawks and the Broncos will only play once for the title of Super Bowl champion. The game wont be played on a computer, but on the field. But that doesnt stop people from trying to guess what will happen on the field, with what happens in a computer simulation.

Prediction Machines Predictalator ran a simulation of Sundays Super Bowl 50,000 times, and found that the most likely score has the Seahawks beating the Broncos, 24-21.

Of the 50,000 simulations, the Seahawks won 54.8% of the time, and the Broncos 45.2% of the time.

The Broncos are currently a 2.5 point favorite at most sports books.

Though the Seahawks came out on top more often, the Broncos edged them out in most offensive categories. Notching 331 total yards to Seattles 327, and 229 passing yards to the Seahawks 209. 229 yards however, would be a substantial drop for Peyton Manning during his record-setting season. The Seahawks did have the edge in rushing yards, at 117 to the Broncos 101.

The simulations also predict individual stats. Peyton Manning averaged 241 passing yards, throwing 1.9 touchdowns and 1.1 interceptions.

Since Week 2 of the NFL season, the Predictalators projected Super Bowl every week was Denver vs. Seattle. To add to that, both of these teams were more than 50% likely to make the Super Bowl for all but two weeks in that stretch as well, a feat rarely seen by any team in any week before the playoffs started in the last decade (let alone two teams consistently), Prediction Machines Paul Bessire writes. This is the best Super Bowl we could have this season and it may be the best matchup of NFL teams in the Super Bowl in the leagues history. Not too surprisingly, the spread on this game has stayed below a field goal and has, at times already, favored either team.

Super Bowl security net cast wide to protect game and related events

As the Super Bowl gets closer, authorities in New York and New Jersey are mounting a massive security operation to make sure game day is secure. NBC's national investigative correspondent Jeff Rossen reports.

More than 80,000 football fans are expected to brave near-freezing temperatures to attend the New York regions first Super Bowl on Sunday, and more than 3,000 security guards, 700 cops and hundreds of high-tech gadgets will be on hand to greet them.

Similar armies of human and technological watchdogs will keep eyes and lenses trained on the tens of thousands of other people who will descend on the city to enjoy other festivities associated with America's top sports event making it the biggest and most-expensive security net in the 48-year history of the game.

The $1.6 billion Met Life Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., where the game will be played, will be the most tightly guarded venue with a 2.5 mile chain-link perimeter fence and cameras trained on every section and corridor inside. But multiple game-related events planned New York and New Jersey add several degrees of difficulty to the job of keeping fans and participants safe, security experts say.

This Super Bowl, says Ed Hartnett, former head of the New York Police Departments Intelligence Unit, truly defines the word challenge when it comes to security.

There is no intelligence indicating that terrorists have targeted the game or related events, but Hartnett says that doesnt mean that threats dont exist : I would list them in priority order being a suicide bomber, a vehicle laden with explosives and a mass shooter or mass shooters similar to the Kenyan mall, or the Mumbai incidents, he said. His concerns are echoed by law enforcement officials overseeing the game.

Extensive mass transit, bridge and tunnel networks in the vicinity are a particular area of concern, according to a review of sensitive law enforcement documents detailing the Super Bowl security plan and intelligence by NBC News. The game is being billed as the Mass Transit Super Bowl by the New Jersey Transit system, and rail officials say the security experience for fans taking the train on game day will rival that of an airport, with bag-screening, K-9 teams and random searches for trains to and from the game.

The documents also discuss an emerging threat: computer hacking. Could criminals use a cyber-attack to hit the infrastructure and control systems for the game? While not considered likely, officials recall what an accidental blackout did to last years game. Many of the key players in developing this years security plan attended the game in New Orleans and learned from the Superdome outage, which delayed the game for 34 minutes early in the third quarter.

Space Station Extension Expands Research Horizons

For nearly everything on Earth, a little room to grow can make all the difference. That is true in space, as well. The Obama Administration has announced support for extending the International Space Stations (ISS) mission to 2024, giving the project room to flourish. The extra decade will allow the ISS to continue its already fruitful microgravity research mission offering scientists and engineers the time needed to ensure the future of exploration, scientific discoveries and economic development.

As NASA Administrator Charles Bolden stated in a January 8 blog post, The [space station] is a unique facility that offers enormous scientific and societal benefits. The Obama Administrations decision to extend its life until at least 2024 will allow us to maximize its potential, deliver critical benefits to our nation and the world, and maintain American leadership in space.

By prolonging the testing timeframe for essential technologies related to long-duration journeys, the extension will provide more traction for space exploration such as to an asteroid or Mars. Designs for future spacecraft will be refined by the optimization of systems like the Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS).

I really see the space station as the first step in exploration, NASA Associate Administrator William Gerstenmaier told Jessica Nimon of International Space Station Program Science Office. It is gaining us operational experience in a distant location, well beyond the Earth, at 75,000 km off the surface of the moon. Those are the kind of experience, technology and hardware that we need to go to Mars, so all that feeds forward.

ISS researchers are showing that space exploration is hardly limited to space travel with microgravity research. The next decade will allow those scientists time for research planning and to make the most of facilities being built today. The ready-to-use suite of facilities already aboard the ISS opens opportunities to run studies that will include extended chances for follow-up investigations enabling results from station science not formerly possible and increasing the collective knowledge in various disciplines. The impact of science results typically emerge over a five to ten year period, making this an attractive incentive for new researchers.

For 14 years, the space station has had a continuous human presence, allowing breakthroughs in science and technology not possible on Earth, said Sam Scimemi, NASAs International Space Station director. The ability to extend our window of discovery through at least 2024 presents important new opportunities to develop the tools we need for future missions to deep space while reaping large benefits for humanity.

A wide variety of investigations will begin, continue and complete over the next ten years in orbitfrom advancements in astrophysics from the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) and the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) to climate studies using the Earth remote sensing instruments, which can also assist with disaster recovery efforts.

Researchers also anticipate developments from the upcoming 1-year mission and biology studies, such as T-Cell Act in Aging, which will help people with related health concerns on Earth as well as the scientists. There will be favorable advances for industries as well, with applications to fundamental physics investigations, such as microgravity fluid physics and combustion tests.
