Fun New Kickstarter is a Space Station Detector

ISS-Above lights up when the International Space Station is going to fly over your location.

Theres a coffee shop in Pasadena, California that has a cool little device that lights up whenever the International Space Station is going to passover head, providing a little science lesson for patrons of the cafe. Called ISS-Above, the device is the brainchild of Liam Kennedy, a web designer, amateur astronomer and space enthusiast, and theres a new Kickstarter for the project that will make the device available to anyone.

Its both an awareness thing, so more people get to know the Space Station is in their sky, says Kennedy, and its also to let those who are up there know that we know and appreciate what they are doing!

Thats because not only does it light up when the ISS is nearby, it can also Tweet a message to the Space Station. Plus it has its own built-in web server to give you a ton of information about current and future passes.

It runs on a Raspberry Pi system with a memory card that can be loaded with your location information, so if you are a computer geek, this is totally up your alley! LEDs light up to alert you to the space stations presence. There are different case options depending on how youd like your own personal ISS-Above to look, including some colorful 3D-printed options.

But arent there already apps available that do this?

True, said Kennedy, and I probably have almost all of them, talking about the apps that will tell you when the ISS is going to be passing by.

Those are great BUT thats not what ISS-Above is about, Kennedy said. I wanted something small; a physical device that can just sit on a window sill or on a shelf beside the TV and light up every time the ISS is making a pass in my sky. Having these in my house for the past few months really has me understand the difference it makes to see just how frequently it passes nearby.

For this Kickstarter, there are reward options that contain a complete ISS-Above and one of two types of colorful LED display devices, the PiGlow or the Ledborg. The PiGlow is unique with its circular/spiral layout while the Ledborg is intensely bright.

Clam, Corn and Jalapeno Fritters

Packed with heat and flavor, these fritters can spice up even the longest of games. Theyre a great way to offer something new in a sea of chips and dip. To go for the extra point, pair them with a roasted red pepper aioli and serve with a fennel and red onion slaw. Drain clams. Combine the clams, corn, jalapeo, garlic and the green and Spanish onions. Beat the eggs with the milk and add to the clam mixture. Combine the dry ingredients and stir into the wet mixture. Mix until all lumps are removed. Heat the oil to 375 degrees. Spoon two tablespoon-sized dollops into the oil. Cook until golden and fritter floats to the surface. Serves: about 3 dozen.

Rub the red pepper with one tablespoon of canola oil and roast in a 425-degree oven until the skin blisters. Remove and allow it to cool enough to handle.

Remove the skin, hull and seeds. Combine the garlic, shallot, egg yolks, the vinegars and the lemon juice. Using an immersion blender, process the mixture until completely smooth.

Combine the oils and while continuing to process, slowly drizzle the oils into the yolk mixture. Add in the red pepper and process until well and completely combined. Season with the salt and pepper and adjust, as necessary, to taste.

NASA Sued for Failing to Investigate Martian Jelly-Donut Rock

One man is claiming that the intriguing Martian rock photographed recently by NASA's Opportunity rover isn't a rock at all, but a living thing, and is now suing the space agency for neglecting to investigate further.

Rhawn Joseph, a neuropsychologist and author, filed a lawsuit in a California court earlier this week demanding NASA "thoroughly scientifically examine and investigate" the mystery object that seemingly appeared out of nowhere on the surface of Mars this month.

Dubbed the "jelly donut," by Opportunity lead scientist Steve Squyres, the rock is white on the outside with a red center. And while NASA scientists admitted it was "unlike anything we have seen before," they definitely determined it to be a rock.

NASA even offered a simple and slightly dull explanation for its curious appearance on Mars on Jan. 8, after photographs taken in the same location just 12 days earlier showed no such object.

That explanations included the possibility that Opportunity's tires knocked the rock, since dubbed "Pinnacle Island," into view.

But the mystery was not to be explained away so fast for Joseph.

The self-labelled astrobiologist and author of several books on extraterrestial life instead resorted to legal action against the agency, explaining in the court petition his theory that the rock is indeed "a putative biological organism."

In fact, it could be a "mushroom-like fungus, a composite organism consisting of colonies of lichen and cyanobacteria, and which on Earth is known as Apothecium," Joseph speculated in the petition.

Nanotips uses nanotechnology to make any pair of gloves touch-friendly

Keeping our digits warm and dry can be a real challenge when using smartphones in the winter. The solution we usually peddle is simple: dump your current hand warmers for a new pair of touch-enabled gloves. But there arent a lot of brands that sell touch-enabled gloves, and what if you like what youre already wearing? Canadian inventor Tony Yu has thought of a solution.

Meet Nanotips: A specially-designed compound made with nanotechnology that can help you turn any pair of gloves into touch-enabled ones. Hes running a Kickstarter to help get raise money to mass produce the compound.

Yu told us he got the idea after buying his motorcycle, along with all the much-needed accessories, such as a helmet, jacket, and you guessed it gloves.

When I started actually riding, I ran into the inconvenience of always having to take off my gloves whenever I wanted to check the maps on my phone. Yus ridiculously expensive gloves for riding didnt come with a conductive thread that would make them touch-enabled.

You apply the solution on the glove tips, and once it dries they will work with smartphone and tablet touchscreens.

Yu hated the touch-enabled gloves that were on the market, and certainly didnt want to spend a bunch of money for a whole new pair. At first he thought about using silver thread, but didnt want to take a sewing needle to his $200 gloves. Next was trying a set of studs that were inserted, but according to Yu they were so hard to apply and they ended up coming off almost immediately.

Yu tried several more methods, including a sort of condom for your gloves, but they either wouldnt work, or kept sliding off while he rode his motorcycle.

There wasnt anything on the market that fit Yus needs, so he decided to figure out a solution on his own, taking a few ideas he had in mind with readily available components and modifying them to suit his own needs. Yu came up with his own formula for a compound that uses special conductive nanotubes, but remains super durable so it can last as long as possible on your gloves. After some more tweaking around and a few test batches, Nanotips was born.

Nanotips is a liquid solution that comes in a bottle small enough that it could contain nail polish. You apply the solution on the glove tips, and once it dries they will work with smartphone and tablet touchscreens. The original formula was supposed to be clear, but despite Yus best efforts, it still leaves a bluish hue when it dries, which is why he called it Nanotips Blue. Theres also a Black color available for the solution, which is designed especially for fabric or woven gloves. A bottle of the Blue stuff will give you about 15 fingers worth before you run out.

Nanotips use a special chemical compound using nanotechnology that dries on to make them touch-capable.
