Wolves handle Comets 4-2

Ten former Chicago Wolves returned to the Allstate Arena with the Utica Comets on Tuesday morning, but the current Wolves did not give them a warm welcome. The Wolves topped the Comets 4-2 in front of 11,488 enthusiastic students at the School-Day Game to earn their 10th victory in their last 11 home games.

The trio of right wing Ty Rattie (goal, 2 assists), center Alexandre Bolduc (2 assists) and left wing Chris Porter (2 goals) combined for the first 3 goals to boost the Wolves. Center Adam Cracknell added a late goal.

"It was nice to get 2 on the power-play, which hasn't happened often this year," Wolves coach John Anderson said. "We got some pushback in the second, but I thought we played our game for the most part."

Rattie continued his tear, notching his fourth goal and seventh point in the last four games to open the scoring at 10:17 of the first period. Center Keith Aucoin carried the puck into the zone and faked a shot, instead sending a cross-ice pass to Rattie at the far side of the net. The rookie buried it for his team-leading 18th goal.

The Wolves (26-16-2-2) added another at 17:05 to take a 2-goal lead going into the first intermission. Rattie battled for the puck along the boards and got it to center Alexandre Bolduc. Bolduc threw a pass to the front of the net for Porter, who banked it off his skate to his stick and backhanded it five-hole to beat Comets goaltender Joacim Eriksson.

Utica (16-22-2-4) responded early in the second period on the power play, cutting Chicago's lead in half. Right wing Benn Ferriero streaked down the wall while on the man advantage and whipped a shot into the top corner over goaltender Jake Allen's glove at 5:51.

The equalizer came later in the period as right wing Nicklas Jensen took advantage of a scrum in front of the net to knot the score at 12:17. After a weird bounce off the boards caused a scramble in the crease, Jensen picked up the puck and beat a sprawled Allen to even the score.

Halfway through the third period, the Wolves regained the lead on a power-play goal. As Chicago peppered Eriksson with shots, a rebound from a Bolduc shot popped out to Porter in front of the net. Porter roofed it to give the Wolves a 3-2 lead with 9:48 remaining.

WL Girls beaten by WB Bears

The West Liberty Comets girls' basketball team has improved a lot since the beginning of the season, but a five-point first quarter and a 12-point difference in the fourth were too much to overcome on Jan. 24. The Comets fell 60-41 to the Bears at West Branch.

"It's kind of been our story lately," West Liberty Head Coach Nick Heath said, "We get down seven, 18, 23 points, whatever, and we fought back.

"Tonight it was 40-35 with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter. (West Branch) went on an 8-0 run to take a commanding lead (in) the game, and that was tough to fight back from. We're improving. We've got a decent four-game stretch now."

First Quarter

West Liberty got off to a very slow start offensively and was down 7-0 before Hailey Daufeldt scored the Comets' first points of the game on a putback basket with 3:36 remaining in the first quarter. West Branch scored two more baskets, then a three-pointer by Molly Kelly made it 11-5. West Liberty trailed 13-5 by the end of the quarter.

Second Quarter

The Bears stretched their lead to double digits with a putback basket to start the second quarter. Emma Baker was fouled on a shot and made both free throws for the Comets for a 15-7 score. West Branch made a three-point basket; then Kelly drove to the hoop and scored. The Bears scored in the paint, and the Comets took a time out with 5:46 on the clock, trailing 20-9.

Later on Daufeldt got a defensive board and Baker scored with a jump shot for a halftime score of 30-19, Bears.

Third Quarter

Daufeldt hit an outside two-pointer for the third quarter's first score. West Branch scored two baskets, then the Comets fouled the Bears. West Branch made the first free-throw then had a lane violation. The Comets turned the ball over, and West Branch scored. Kelly hit a three-point basket at the 4:42 mark, beginning a 10-0 run by the Comets for a 37-24 score. Baker got a defensive rebound, then the Bears pulled down a defensive board. Anderson got a defensive rebound, then the Bears got a rebound and traveled.

With injuries, trades and call-ups to the parent Blues, it's difficult for Wolves coach John Anderson to assemble consistent lines for multiple games, no matter how well a particular unit is playing.

So for now, the Wolves will have to be content to keep Chris Porter, Alexandre Bolduc and Ty Rattie together for as long as possible.

The trio combined for three goals and seven points in the Wolves 4-2 victory over the Utica Comets in a Tuesday matinee at Allstate Arena. The Wolves (26-16-2-2) improved to 10-0-1-0 in their last 11 home games.

Porter scored twice including the game-winning goal on the power play midway through the final period and Rattie had a goal and two assists. Bolduc added two assists.

"We're just all playing the same way," Porter said of the line's success. "There's a lot of talk on the bench, sorting things out before we get on the ice."

Porter's second goal snapped an 0-for-14 streak on the power play. Adam Cracknell, making his home debut since the Blues reassigned him Jan. 23, added another power-play goal with three minutes left to seal the victory.

The goals helped erase the disappointment of blowing a 2-0 lead after the first period.

The Comets, whose parent Canucks partnered with the Wolves for the past two seasons, rallied to tie it in the second with a power-play goal from Benn Ferriero and an even-strength one from former Wolves forward Nicklas Jensen.

West Liberty takes down West Branch

It took an overtime period to do it, but the West Liberty Comets boys' basketball team defeated the West Branch Bears on the road Jan. 24, 62-59.

"I thought we shared the ball pretty well," West Liberty Head Coach James Laughlin said. "We did some good things. Troy Heick is home sick right now, so Brady Smith stepped in and did a nice job defensively on (West Branch's tall man, Bradley) Arp. We got banged up. Brady twisted an ankle. Cooper (Koenig) hurt his knee. We were a short bench there for a while, and I thought Luke Seele did a great job coming in off the bench as well."

First Quarter

Both teams swapped points in the first quarter, ending with a basket by Becker made for a 15-15 tie at the end.

Second Quarter

Becker started the second quarter with a three-point shot, then West Branch tied it with a trey. Becker hit another three pointer. Each team got a defensive rebound. Smith got a defensive board, then the Bears got a steal and a layup. West Branch got another steal and Guardado got a defensive board. West Liberty turned the ball over a couple of times, but the Bears didn't score until the 3:00 mark when a putback basket gave them a 22-21 lead.

Guardado got the lead back for the Comets with a short jumper. The Bears turned the ball over but got a steal and a layup. Miller scored, assist Becker, for a 25-24 lead. Guardado was fouled and made both free throws for a 27-24 score. West Branch scored inside to cut the Comets lead to one, then Riley Anderson made a basket just before the buzzer sounded for a 29-26 West Liberty halftime lead.

Third Quarter

The third quarter started off slowly offensively for both teams. The Bears scored the first basket at the 4:49 mark, then Miller made a three-point shot for a 32-28 West Liberty lead. Later on West Branch completed a traditional three-point play with 28.2 seconds on the clock for a 42-39 Bears lead. The Bears got a defensive board, then Miller got a defensive rebound to end the quarter.

Fourth Quarter

COLEMAN Coleman limited Marion to only 12 first-half points and went on to a 60-38 win in nonleague boys basketball on Tuesday.

Jarid Waltons 16 points and 10 rebounds paced the Comets, who led 31-12 at the half and extended the lead to 52-25 through three quarters. Colemans Matt Warner added 11 points, five assists and three steals, while Lars Murray had nine points, Colton Morley had nine points and four steals, and Dylan Haller finished with seven assists and five steals.

It was the first time all year that we came out with intensity to start the second half, which was nice to see, said Coleman coach Byron Schunk. We had a nice, balanced attack with eight different kids scoring.

Coleman (4-8) hosts Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart on Friday.

Marion won the junior varsity game.

Hemlock 51, Shepherd 42

HEMLOCK Hemlock improved to 8-0 in the Tri-Valley Conference Central boys basketball standings with a 51-42 win over Shepherd on Tuesday.

The Huskies outscored the Bluejays 22-10 in the first and fourth quarters combined.

We did a much better job of rebounding the ball in the second half, and I thought we did a pretty good job of finishing tonight, said Hemlock coach Matt Bauer. It wasnt our best game of the year, but were still sitting at 8-0 in the league, and we feel that every game. were going to get the other teams best shot.

I thought we did a good job of taking their punches tonight, and everytime they cut (the deficit) to four or five, we answered back to give us a little more breathing room, Bauer added.

Shes a voice for theological sanity in an uncertain world. Religious historian Diana Butler Bass is coming to Naples for a two-day lecture series, The Romance of Faith: Exploring New Ways of Thinking about Love, Faith, Spirituality and Theology.

Butler Bass will discuss how Christians can take the central teachings of the bible namely love of God, neighbor and self and use it to navigate a world where love has alternate meanings.

If we truly believe that God is with us, that his presence is behind all life, then we must trust that the spirit is working amidst all these changes and learn to open our lives to this love and not live in fear of the transformation, says Butler Bass.

The best-selling author is working on her ninth book and says dialog and insight she gains from fellow Christians during her lectures inspires much of what she writes about in her work.

One in four marriages is interreligious, says Butler Bass. People I meet around the country want to know where the spirit of God is in all the changes happening around us. They want to know how they should practice their faith given this new dynamic.

Because her first lecture at Naples United Church of Christ falls on Valentines Day at 8 p.m., Butler Bass says shell be focusing on what she calls are the fourfold ethics of love. This will become the basis of a framework wherein attendees can begin to understand how love of God, neighbor and self influence decisions about courtship, sexuality and marriage. Examining trends in Christian communities is the topic of many of Butler Bass writings. When she set out to write The Peoples History of Christianity: The Other Side of the Story, Butler Bass said there was so much attention on fallen Christian leaders that she felt a calling and decided her book needed to highlight the lives of people in church history who actually achieved a life that emulated the teachings.

My favorite Christian leader in history is Rev. Samuel Green, an African American born into slavery in the early 1800s that became a gifted preacher, said Butler Bass. He was freed by his owner in exchange for staying on the plantation to preach and amassed a 300-member congregation. He was able to buy his wifes freedom and was in the process of buying his childrens when he was arrested.

Butler Bass explained that Greens son, a slave, had become a fugitive and when the authorities searched the preachers home, they found a copy of Harriet Beecher Stowes Uncle Toms Cabin. Because Green was also a friend of Harriet Tubman and was suspected of having ties to the Underground Railroad, he was arrested and ordered to do 10 years of hard labor.

OKLAHOMA CITY Ushering in the New Year often comes with hopes of a healthier, lighter you.

For some, the guide for dieting in 2014 is the Bible!

Jennifer Laws is among thousands of Oklahomans participating in a church fast.

The Daniel Fast inspires people to lose weight and gain spiritual enlightenment.

Laws said, Were a self-focused society. So, its all about what we can eat and when we can eat it.

Pastor Herbet Cooper, of Peoples Church, says the purpose is to shift focus from food to faith.

He said, Thats really what the Daniel Fast is all about. Giving up what we love, thats food, and certain types of food so we can spend more time in scripture and worship and hearing from God.

Most versions of the Daniel Fast are improvised because the Bible does not give detailed instructions.

For the most part, it includes raw vegetables, fresh fruits and whole grains.

Newswise (Salt Lake City) A group of researchers at the University of Utah has launched a new project aimed at understanding how the brain operates in people with deep spiritual and religious beliefs.

The Religious Brain Project, which kicked off this week, aims to foster dialogue and understanding among people with diverse viewpoints on religion by learning how private religious experience may affect the social brain, and how religion may affect social behavior. The new project is a broad, multidisciplinary effort that engages many religious and scientific communities from the University of Utah, Brigham Young University, Utah Valley University, and Westminster College. The projects first initiative revolves around studying the brains of people who have returned from serving missions on behalf of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Jeff Anderson, M.D., Ph.D., an associate professor of neuroradiology at the University of Utah who is also the projects director, said the study is among the first of its kind in trying to uncover the neuroscience behind the brains of religious and spiritual people.

Religious and spiritual stimuli are among the most profound influences on behavior that exists. The neuroscience of spirituality, however, is almost completely unknown, said Anderson. We want to study what happens in the brain when someone has a spiritual experience.

Anderson is the principal investigator on the study along with University of Utah researchers Michael Ferguson and Jared Nielsen. In addition, Julie Korenberg M.D. ,Ph.D., a professor of pediatrics at the University of Utah, is consulting on the project. Researchers are currently in the process of recruiting 15 to 20 volunteers to participate in the study.

Participants who agree to participate in the study, once accepted as a research subject, would arrive at a University of Utah laboratory to have an MRI scan. During that procedure, researchers would provide them with an opportunity for scripture study, prayer, and other church-produced video content that would stimulate their brains. Eligible candidates must be healthy young men and women, ages 20 to 30, who have completed an LDS mission; are active, believing members of their church; and who think they might be able to experience spiritual feelings in the controlled environment of an MRI scanner.

While the projects first study focuses on members of the Mormon faith, research will extend to other religions as the initiative continues to grow, Anderson said.

Religious and spiritual experiences are among the most powerful influences on individuals and entire cultures. We are all shaped and defined by our experiences with religion. Yet the neuroscience of religious and spiritual feeling is almost completely unknown. We are seeking answers to fundamental questions, like What happens in the brain during religious or spiritual experiences? and How is the brain changed by religious experience? said Anderson. He added that researchers hope to find deeper discoveries related to evidence that religious people score higher on a range of pro-sociality metrics such as low criminality, donation to charity, and low divorce rates.
