What is Nanotechnology What applications can it be used for801 - Video
Following one of my earlier blogs on the need for more funding in the sciences, a prominent scientist Professor C. N. R. Rao has commented recently to the press that government should ensure targeted funding to promote nanoscience and nanotechnology in solving societal problems and improving the quality of life.
Professor Rao went on to say, "Nano science has a lot to offer. As the science of the future, it has the potential to develop a number of applications for the benefit of masses in diverse areas such as water, food, shelter, healthcare and energy to name a few".
A recent advancement in nanotechnology proves just how important the science is as a future science. A group of researchers have reported on an efficient and reproducible way of bonding together gels and biological tissues. For many years scientists have failed to create strong bonds between two gels, until now. By spreading on the surface of the two tissues or gels you wish to bond, a solution containing nanoparticles scientists are now able to form very strong adhesion.
The finding will open up many new applications and areas of research, which will help to improve lives as well as society, the application will find particular use in medical, and veterinary fields, particularly in areas of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.
Professor Rao and others have all identified the importance of continued funding in science and in this particular case nanotechnology as the opportunities to help society across the world can only increase with time and effort.

Early detection of cancer, including mesothelioma, is vital to prolonging the life expectancy of patients as treatment is more effective and available in the early stages. That is why the law firm of MRHFM supports new research from a group of UK scientists that published work in the "Journal of Alloys and Compounds" on the Science Direct website in January 2014. The research is about the development of a new bio-nanocomposite that could lead to earlier detection, and more successful treatment of breast cancer and other cancers.
Not to be confused with nanomaterials that are used in products such as invisible sunscreens and stain-resistant coatings for clothes, the types of nanomaterials or smart materials produced using nanotechnology are being studied with a focus on their potential ability to kill cancer cells without harming surrounding healthy cells. Not only has this emerging science shown promising potential in the treatment of everything from brain cancer to mesothelioma, a number of medical studies are now underway to determine if it will play a significant role in quicker and more advanced detection of aggressive cancers such as mesothelioma.
Research for not only treatment, but early detection of mesothelioma is crucial as these aggressive cancers spread so quickly that every day matters, said Neil Maune, partner at MRHFM. In order for treatment to be more effective, there must be the tools available to diagnosis as early as possible.
In the case of mesothelioma cancer, patients do not show any signs or symptoms until years after asbestos exposure. This coupled with the fact that mesothelioma is not an easy cancer to diagnose, it is especially critical to support research in the detection of mesothelioma cancer.
If you or someone you know are experiencing symptoms of mesothelioma, contact a doctor immediately to get tested. Also contact an attorney at MRHFM, the largest firm exclusively devoted to helping mesothelioma victims and their families to discuss your case. For more information about mesothelioma, request a free book about mesothelioma at http://www.mesotheliomabook.com or contact the legal team at MRHFM directly by calling 866-373-5000.

"We should be fine." That's reassuring, until of course, with further research, they find that they can manipulate the very structure of an atom and then what'll happen? Now they'll be able to create "elements" which will then earn them a Nobel Prize. At what point will they learn that there are just certain things we as humans aren't supposed to mess with?
However, you can't tell a scientist who's spent his whole life on research to stop and "you're going too far". We as humans will always go too far, which happens to be the very reason we are in the political dilemma we are in.
We as humans are a threat to ourselves because we are humans, not computers and we make mistakes. I'll have to agree that the technology has its benefits but the risk of it getting into the wrong hands is too high. People are always looking to make that buck, and what if it gets into the hands of terrorists?
I don't trust another human with this type of responsibility. I hate to be so pessimistic but it's dangerous and we as humans always have to learn by trial and error,I'm just saying, I'd hate for that error to wipe out 90 percent of the planet!
@umbra21 - The technology scares me and it's not just because I read too many science fiction novels. It's the same kind of playing with fire that they do when they try to manipulate genetic material.
Nanomaterial is the same in that, once it gets out of our control it would be near impossible to regain it. And it's easy to say that they simply won't make the stuff self replicate and that solves the problem. In order for it to be effective it needs to either be very enduring or self replicating, because it's so small. But, because it's so small if it is let loose, say into a human body, or even into the atmosphere, then how can they ever account for it again?
It's a dangerous path and this isn't even mentioning the potential for people to deliberately misuse it.
@KoiwiGal - It's a shame that most people's introduction to nanotechnology is through those sorts of science fiction stories. It is very rarely portrayed in a positive light.
Although it's good in a way, because it means that scientists aren't going to take the technology lightly. It does have a huge potential for harm, but its potential for good is even bigger.

Autodesks 123D Web app is an easy way to create 3D models that can then be sent to your 3D printer. For Valentines Day, Autodesk has added a new app called Charmr that lets you convert a photograph into jewelry.
In essence, Charmr is a lot like those custom jewelry kiosks you used to find in Walmart. You upload a picture, place it onto the pendant or charm of your choice and then print it. What sets Charmr apart is that it generates a 3D printable file for you to make with your 3D printer.
For example, lets say somebody wasnt right in their right mind and wanted a charm with my face on it. With Charmr, I just simply have to upload the picture onto the sight, set it inside the charm of my choice and download the STL file.
If you dont have a 3D printer, you can still obtain a 3D print of your jewelry through Shapeways, Sculpteo and i.materialise. Shapeways may be your best bet as the company offers prints in a variety of materials that arent plastic.
If youre like me and have a face that only a mother could tolerate, you might want to go with one of the designs already up on Charmr. At the moment, you can choose between some Milk Box earrings, a Ye heart pendant, a BFF pendant or a Year of the Horse pendant. There will be more designs added soon as more people make more charms.

EVENING Times readers are being urged to support a charity event that is raising funds to ensure a vital service can continue.
A race night is being held to raise funds for our Talking Newspaper for the blind
Cue and Review Print Speaking to the Blind, which produces our Talking Newspaper, is holding a race night to raise cash to fund the service.
Volunteers and young disabled people employed by the charity currently read a total of 28 articles each day and upload them for blind and partially-sighted people to download to their specially adapted internet radio boxes.
It costs 167 each day to keep the service free. Up to 2000 blind people can access the audio version of the Evening Times thanks to the charity.
A fundraising race night is being held on February 21 at the Social Club in St Mungo Street in Bishopbriggs.
Alastair McPhee, Cue and Review managing editor, said: "Providing a six day a week service for the Evening Times costs money and with that in mind the volunteers are asking readers to come along and support the event.
"It costs 167 per day to keep our service free, and we do need your support to help up to 2000 blind people who have access to the audio Evening Times.
