Bill Haley Jr and Comets promise night of old fashioned rock n roll

Bill Haley and the Comets are rock n roll legends - they were there at the birth of rock n roll and changed the face of music forever.

And now Bill Haleys son Bill Haley Jr, and his five-piece band, are coming to Rotoruas Energy Events Centre for a rock n roll celebration on Saturday 29 March.

They will be playing all the 50s rockers classics, including Rock Around The Clock; See You Later Alligator; Shake, Rattle & Roll; Chantilly Lace; Johnny B Good; That's Alright Mama; Kansas City and Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On.

Energy Events Centre operations manager, Joelene Elliott, says the band will be bringing the songs that many Kiwis grew up with and which earned Bill Haley and the Comets a place in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

But Ms Elliot says people can expect much more than just a regular concert. She says it promises to be a fun-filled 50s rock n roll party.

For one amazing night, locals will be transported back to the days of Richie and the Fonz, with hot rods and Harleys, big swinging dresses and gum-chewing waitresses.

In keeping with an American diner theme, concert-goers will have the option of front-of-stage dining with a selection of American favourites on the menu including pre-ordered meals like T-bone steaks, and other options available on the night like barbecue ribs, burgers, hot dogs, shakes and Pepsi, or something stronger. Therell also a dance floor and the chance to win prizes.

Bill Haley Jr and the Comets are playing two solid hours of classic rock and roll, so were encouraging people to get into the spirit by dressing in 50s get-up. Put on your glad rags and dancing gear cause theres going to be a whole lot of shakin going on.

Whale of a journey brings musical success – Fri, 21 Feb 2014 PST

Ryan Hayes, half of Midas Whale, grew up inColville. (Full-size photo)(All photos)

Once upon a time, there was a young man named Ryan who left the small town of Colville to travel the world, and then became an acclaimed folkmusician.

Well, thats the story in anutshell.

When 16-year-old Ryan Hayes left his hometown, he had no idea that in the next 11 years, he would accomplish what most never accomplish, and that the world would know aboutit.

He would travel the world as a missionary and as a professionalgeologist.

He would write and produce anopera.

And he would form a musical duo, Midas Whale, appear on the national television show The Voice, and record analbum.

But as it happens, hedid.

On the tail of a two-year missionary assignment to Ecuador as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Hayes found himself inschool.

I was going to school in Rexburg, Idaho, studying to be a geologist, Hayes said. He comes from a long line of scientists; his father is a chemical engineer. On the side, I was writing a rockopera.

World record attempt seeks splendid splitters

Published: Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 8:39 p.m. Last Modified: Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 11:43 p.m.

PALM COAST Palm Coast Gymnastics is bending over backward to raise money by attempting to set a Guinness World Record for longest line of people doing the splits near the Flagler Beach Pier on Saturday.

To earn the title in this new record category, the line must be at least 1,640 feet long, according to Sara Wilcox, a representative for Guinness World Records.

For all new mass-participation record categories, like this one, the minimum amount of people needed for the record to count is 250, she said in an email.

But the gymnastics organization is planning on rolling out a lot more participants than that.

We actually kind of averaged out everybody as 4 feet and if every person who is 4 feet came wed need 410, said Kenny Rosa, president of the Palm Coast Gymnastics parents association, which submitted the application for the new category to create a fundraiser.

Me and my wife were just trying to find different ideas that we could do to raise money to do something special for gymnastics and Palm Coast in general and we started looking for things, he said.

By donating $5, which will go toward things like travel, private lessons and a banquet, anyone who can hold a 180-degree split for two minutes can participate, according to Kelly Hesbeens, owner of Palm Coast Gymnastics.

Were obviously trying to go for more than (1,640 feet) so I offered it to as many dance schools and gymnastics places that are in the community, as well as Jacksonville all the way to Tampa, Hesbeens said. I dont know how many are coming here, but Ive had gyms call and say Oh, were bringing 30 kids, or Oh, were bringing 10 kids.

Palm Coast Gymnastics alone will take about 200 participants, but Rosa thinks they have only a 50/50 chance of sticking their goal.
