agnosticism – The Skeptic’s Dictionary – Skepdic.com

Agnosticism is the position of believing that knowledge of the existence or non-existence of god is impossible. It is often put forth as a middle ground between theism and atheism. Understood this way, agnosticism is skepticism regarding all things theological. The agnostic holds that human knowledge is limited to the natural world, that the mind is incapable of knowledge of the supernatural. Understood this way, an agnostic could also be a theist or an atheist. The former is called a fideist, one who believes in god purely on faith. The latter is sometimes accused by theists of having faith in the non-existence of god, but the accusation is absurd and the expression meaningless. The agnostic atheist simply finds no compelling reason to believe in god.

The term 'agnostic' was created by T. H. Huxley (1825-1895), who took his cue from David Hume and Immanuel Kant. Huxley says that he invented the term to describe what he thought made him unique among his fellow thinkers:

They were quite sure that they had attained a certain "gnosis" -- had more or less successfully solved the problem of existence; while I was quite sure I had not, and had a pretty strong conviction that the problem was insoluble.

'Agnostic' came to mind, he says, because the term was "suggestively antithetic to the 'gnostic' of Church history, who professed to know so much about the very things of which I was ignorant...." Huxley seems to have intended the term to mean that metaphysics is, more or less, bunk. In short, he seems to have agreed with Hume's conclusion at the end of An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding:

When we run over libraries, persuaded of these principles, what havoc must we make? If we take in our hand any volume; of divinity or school metaphysics, for instance; let us ask, Does it contain any abstract reasoning concerning quantity or number? No. Does it contain any experimental reasoning concerning matter of fact and existence? No. Commit it then to the flames: for it can contain nothing but sophistry and illusion.*

Kant's Critique of Pure Reason resolved some of the main epistemological issues raised by Hume, but at the expense of rejecting the possibility of knowing anything beyond appearances of phenomena. We can't know god but the idea of god is a practical necessity, according to Kant.

Finally, there is an argument, popular among some who fancy themselves intellectuals, that agnosticism is the only intellectually honest position to take with regard to gods. According to this viewpoint, theism and atheism are arrogant affirmations of being certain about something that is intrinsically unknowable. It is, of course, true that it is possible there is some unknowable being or entity who creates universes, has unimaginable powers, and is like nothing we have any experience of. No atheist that I know of has ever denied such a possibility, nor have we denied the possibility of an unknowable Easter Bunny who lays eggs on Saturn or any other imaginable epistemic improbability. So what? Atheists and theists do not concern themselves with epistemic improbabilities, but with gods about whom stories have been told for millennia. The more we learn about the universe, the less reason there is for believing that any of these gods were not created by human imagination. Agnosticism regarding Zeus or Abraham's god is not an intellectually honest position, as it can be maintained only by a fatuous and dishonest treatment of the available evidence. That evidence shows beyond a reasonable doubt that all gods fashioned thus far in the minds of men are highly improbable. Agnosticism regarding unimaginable, unknowable beings is redundant.

Southern California Stem Cell Clinic, Telehealth, Now Offering Several Knee Treatment Options to Avoid Joint Replacement

Orange County, CA (PRWEB) March 03, 2014

The top stem cell treatment clinic in Southern California, Telehealth, is now offering several knee pain treatment options for avoiding joint replacement. The regenerative medicine treatments involve either platelet rich plasma therapy, bone marrow derived stem cell injections or blood derived stem cell treatment. Call for more information and scheduling call (888) 828-4575. The treatments may be completely or partially covered by insurance.

Although knee replacement procedures have been exceptionally successful for reducing one's pain and improving functional abilities, there are some risks associated with the procedure, along with the fact they are not meant to last forever. Unlike conventional nonoperative treatments, such as steroid injections, regenerative medicine treatments maintain the ability to repair and regenerate arthritic tissue as opposed to simply masking pain.

The Board Certified doctors at Telehealth have extensive experience and regenerative medicine therapies for degenerative arthritis of the knee. Stem cell therapy for arthritis has been shown in several small published studies to provide excellent pain relief and maintain cartilage in the knee.

All of the treatments provided are low-risk and outpatient. They involve blood or bone marrow from the patient him or herself, which reduces the risk profile even more.

Telehealth Medical Group has two locations in Southern California. One is right in Santa Ana, while the other is in Upland. Appointments are readily available. Call for more information and scheduling to (888) 828-4575.

Comets End Regular Season on Five Game Winning Streak

March 2, 2014 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Missouri Comets MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (March 2, 2014) - The Missouri Comets ended the regular season facing the same team that they began the season with. The Wave were able to claim victory, but the Comets have won four of the five matchups since then, including this afternoon at the U.S. Cellular Arena. The two highest scoring teams in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) played a defensive battle in front of 4,552 fans with the Comets coming out on top with a 9-4 victory.

Coming into today's match, the Missouri Comets and the Milwaukee Wave had each scored 320 points, more than any other team in the MISL. Knowing the offensive explosiveness that these two teams are capable of, both head coaches played a decisively defensive strategy. The result was the lowest scoring output in a win for the Comets all season.

Lucas Rodriguez scored the only goal of the opening quarter with two minutes remaining in the period. One of the newest Comets, Max Touloute sent a pass along the wall that bounced off the corner and into the middle of the box where Rodriguez was waiting to strike.

Bryan Perez extended the Comets lead to 4-0 in the second quarter before Milwaukee's Nic Perera got the Wave on the board with ten minutes remaining in the half.

The Comets held a 4-2 lead going into the break, in no small part, thanks to the play of goalkeeper Danny Waltman and his defense. Waltman faced 19 shots on goal and his defense blocked another 11 shots in the win. In the past eight quarters he's played, Waltman has only surrendered four goals.

Making his return to the lineup after missing the last four games due to injury, Vahid Assadpour notched the only score of the third quarter. John Sosa lined up on a restart opportunity, after faking right he quickly passed to an open Assadpour on the left side to put Missouri up 6-2.

As the fourth quarter began and the time for Milwaukee to mount a comeback decreased, the Wave increased their pressure on the Comets. Marcelo Fontana collected a bouncing pass into the middle of the box and brought his team within two points of tying the score. Unflustered, the Missouri defense stood tall and waited for their opportunity. Lucas Rodriguez jumped in front of a Fontana pass midway through the period and buried a shot to the right top corner of the goal. His goal increased the lead to 9-4, the score that would hold for a final.

The win was Missouri's 14th of the season and gave them a 4-2 series victory over their rivals from Milwaukee. The Wave finish with a record of 16-4; with all four losses coming against the Comets. These two teams will now face off for the fourth straight year in the 2014 MISL Playoffs.

Game One of the MISL Playoffs is scheduled for March 9th at 3:10p.m. CT at the Independence Events Center. Game Two will be played March 10th at 7:00p.m. CT at Milwaukee's U.S. Cellular Arena. Tickets are available on Ticketmaster.com or by calling the Comets at 855.4KC.GOAL.

Fans can receive a FREE ticket for Game One of the MISL Semi-Finals by purchasing 2014-2015 Comets Season Tickets by March 5th at 5:00p.m. CT.

Rodriguez, Comets Hand Wave Defeat

March 2, 2014 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Milwaukee Wave MILWAUKEE- The Milwaukee Wave will face the Missouri Comets in the semifinals of the Major Indoor Soccer League Playoffs after the Comets claimed a 9-4 victory at the U.S. Cellular Arena on Sunday afternoon in front of 4,552 fans. Lucas Rodriguez led the Comets to victory with a pair of goals, including a game-clinching 3-pointer with 7:55 to play that capped the scoring.

Milwaukee (16-4) is the No. 2-seed and Missouri (14-6) is the No. 3-seed. Game 1of the three-game series is at 3:10 p.m. CT Sunday at the Indpendence Events Center in Missouri. Milwaukee hosts Game 2 at 7 p.m. Monday, March 10. If the teams split, they'll play a 15-minute "mini-game" to break the tie.

Missouri handed the Wave their only four losses of the regular season, holding them to 23 total points in those games. Sunday's contest was not unlike the others, with Missouri keeper Danny Waltman frustrating Milwaukee with some outstanding saves as the Comets' pressure created problems.

"I think first you've got to go to Danny Waltman," said Wave coach Keith Tozer. "Danny Waltman has showed he's one of the best keepers in the league. I think we showed a lot of good shots at him, and he made a lot of unbelieveable saves."

Waltman stopped 17 of 19 shots and Rodriguez scored two goals, matching his tally from the Comets' victory last Sundayagainst the Wave. On his game-sealing 3-pointer,Rodriguez stole a pass in the attacking end, brought the ball into position with his chest and rifled a volley past Marcel Feenstra.

Rodriguez also scored Missouri's opening goal, and Bryan Perez made it 4-0 in the second quarter before Nick Perera opened the Wave's account with 10:46 left in the second.

Milwaukee didn't score again until Marcelo Fontana finished a crossing pass from Hewerton with 13:26 left in the fourth to make it 6-4. Rodriguez's blast then finished the game.

Now, Milwaukee has to show it can beat the Comets, who are the only visiting team to win a regular season game in Milwaukee in the last two years.

"We've got to make them wish that they didn't want to play us," said Wave midfielder Marcio Leite. "They wanted to play us [in the playoffs], now, the next two games, we've got to make them regret that."

Baltimore (17-3) claimedthe MISL regular-season crown and will takeon the Syracuse Silver Knights in the other semifinal. Those games are Friday night in Syracuse and next Tuesday in Baltimore.

Gameday: Comets at Bridgeport

March 2, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets UTICA COMETS (22-26-3-4) @ BRIDGEPORT SOUND TIGERS (26-25-1-4)

Webster Bank Arena, 3 pm

Radio: 94.9 K-Rock

Tonight's Game: The Utica Comets look to snap a three game losing streak as they travel to Bridgeport for a matinee meeting with the Sound Tigers. Tonight is the final of two meetings between these two teams.

When They Last Met: The Utica Comets connected twice on the power play but could not quiet the Sound Tigers in a 5-3 defeat at the Utica Memorial Auditorium on Dec. 6. Patrick Mullen, Benn Ferriero and Yannick Weber were the goal scorers for the Comets. Ferriero had a three-point night with a hand on each of the Comet goals, while Ryan Strome led the way for Bridgeport with three points (1-2-3) of his own. Joacim Eriksson made 27 saves on 32 shots and was handed the loss and Parker Milner was victorious with 28 saves on 31 shots against.

Comets Outlook: The Utica Comets dropped a nail biter on home ice, a 3-2 decision to the Adirondack Phantoms. Despite a 29-23 shots on goal advantage, the Comets surrendered a late goal to drop their third contest in a row. With the defeat, Utica fell to 22-26-3-4 on the season. David Marshall and Benn Ferriero each scored for the Comets, while netminder Joacim Eriksson turned aside 20 of the 23 shots he faced. Tye McGinn potted two goals for Adirondack, which defeated the Comets for the second time this season.

Sound Tigers Outlook: Bridgeport dropped a narrow 2-1 decision to the Worcester Sharks last evening, in front of 5,711 fans at Webster Bank Arena. Joe Diamond was the lone goal scorer for the home side, while Freddie Hamilton and Travis Oleksiak scored for the Sharks. Harri Sateri was stellar between the pipes with 25 saves on 26 shots, while Kevil Poulin turned away 25 of 27 in defeat.

The Next Jeneration: Utica winger Nicklas Jensen finished the month of February tied for second in the AHL with eight goals. Jensen and Binghamton winter Mike Hoffman trailed only St. John's' centerman John Albert, who finished the month with 11 tallies. Jensen's prolific month was boosted by a hat trick on Feb. 9 against Rockford and four goals scored with the man advantage, which has him tied with Benn Ferriero for the team lead, with six.

Certainly Not a Has Benn: Speaking of Benn Ferriero, the winger scored against Adirondack on Friday, in his second game back in the lineup after a return from injury. Ferrieri is the team leader with 18 goals this season and his 38 points this season are five behind team leader Pascal Pelletier. The Boston College product is now just one goal shy of his AHL career high of 19, set back in 2009-10 with the Worcester Sharks.

The Monster Marsh: David Marshall finally got off the schneid, with his first goal as a Comet on Friday evening against Adirondack. Marshall, who picked up the 17th marker of his AHL career on the play, had previously gone 57 AHL games without a goal, dating back to Mar. 17, 2013 when he was a member of the Charlotte Checkers.
