Liberty Global to Roll-Out Pan-European Mobile Platform

Liberty Global Plc (LBTYA), the cable company controlled by billionaire John Malone, plans to offer mobile phone services to customers throughout Europe, taking on carriers such as the U.K.s Vodafone Group Plc.

Liberty Global will put together a so-called mobile virtual network operator system, or MVNO, the name given to companies that use other carriers wireless infrastructure for their own mobile services, Senior Vice President Manuel Kohnstamm said in a interview yesterday in Amsterdam.

Were working on a deep MVNO, and we dont only do that in Austria but in the whole of Europe, Kohnstamm said. Were constructing a pan-European MVNO platform.

Liberty Global will be able to keep margins high because, as a European cable TV operator, the company runs one billing system, one back-office and one back-haul, which connects the core network to the smaller subnetworks, he said. The company is introducing the MVNO network in the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria and the U.K., Kohnstamm said.

Related:

The company has been active on acquisitions in the European cable market in recent years, taking over Virgin Media Inc. in the U.K. in 2013 and agreeing to buy Dutch operator Ziggo NV (ZIGGO) in January.

London-based Liberty Global has now reached a critical mass, Kohnstamm said, which has led the company to having sufficient scale to be competitive on delivering hardware, research and development, technology and content. While the company isnt actively pursuing acquisitions, it hasnt lost interest in potential takeovers.

We will always be interested and look around, Kohnstamm said, adding that he mostly sees a role for small and middle-sized companies.

They are the ones having to compete with Deutsche Telekom, Belgacom and KPN, which also invest and innovate further, Kohnstamm said. For that reason, he eventually sees those companies being just as interested in joining Liberty as Liberty is in them.

Belgiums Telenet Group Holding NV (TNET), which Liberty Global failed to take over after Telenets shareholders rejected a bid in 2013, isnt one of those smaller companies Liberty is aiming for at the moment.

Libertarian Overby issues thanks, unsure on next move

Libertarian candidate Lucas Overby, who earned about 5 percent of the vote in the Pinellas congressional election, has issued a lengthy statement. You can read it here:

First if all, I want to again thank the thousands of people who honored me with their vote yesterday. To all of you I say this: I swear to stand by all of the efforts we started, all of the ideas we shared, and all of the coalitions we formed. I did not run for office to advance a political career, I got involved for you guys and we fought this fight for you guys. All said and done I regret nothing of this race or the work put into it.

To the hundreds of people who came to me to say this was their first time voting or their first time in years being involved, I say this: Don't stop here. Please, continue to feel free to contact me at any time with questions and ideas, but nothing will change if you go back to the sidelines. The nation needs you in the fight and it needs you to help pull the 60% of voters we missed back in. This is not a set back, this is another step.

To my team and all of our volunteers all I can say is this: Thank you. From the very bottom of my heart and soul thank you. You carried us to places no one thought possible and while we came up short, your hard work and dedication has inspired your neighbors and show so many who are disillusioned a bright ray of hope, you guys are my heros. It has been nothing but an honor and my deepest pleasure to get the opportunity to work with such an amazing group of people. We will move forward, we will continue to fight for those who have no voice, who feel left out.

My few parting thought on this election are these: First and foremost, I firmly believe that teams win elections and candidates lose them. It is our job as candidates to draw the vote, I didn't do it and Ms. Sink didn't do it, Mr. Jolly did. I take full responsibility for the short comings of my results and refuse to blame outside factors. As a third party candidate, I knew full well what the challenges would be, I knew coverage would be hard earned, I knew we would be outspent, but I also knew, and still firmly believe, that the key is reaching those left behind and I simply fell short on that.

Congratulations to Congressman Elect Jolly, I wish you all the best and I hope that you can steadfastly represent your new constituents.

For those asking what my next move is, the honest answer is, I don't know. Nothing is off the table at this point, but again I didn't come here to build a political career, I came here because helping people and getting people engaged is my passion. I have a lot to think about and consider, but I promise to remain open and honest with all of you throughout that process.

Again, thank you all so much for all of your support, your honest and open debate, and your passion for our community, our nation, and our world. This is simply the closing of a chapter, the story is far from over.

Genetics p'rovide unprecedented primate link in human evolution'

Genetics provide stunning new answers to the question of human evolution, according to Auckland cancer researcher, Dr Graeme Finlay.

Genetic markers that are used to follow the development of populations of cells have exactly the same character as those that track the development of species, says Dr Finlay who has just published a book on genetics and human evolution.

His book, Human Evolution: Genes, Genealogies and Phylogenies, was published by Cambridge University Press late last year.

Dr Finlay is senior lecturer in Scientific Pathology at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Pathology, and an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre, in the University of Auckland.

"Controversy over human evolution remains widespread, but the human genome project and genetic sequencing of many other species has provided myriad precise and unambiguous genetic markers that establish our evolutionary relationships with other mammals," says Dr Finlay.

This book identifies and explains these identifiable, rare and complex markers including endogenous retroviruses, genome-modifying transposable elements, gene-disabling mutations, segmental duplications and gene-enabling mutations.

These new genetic tools also provide fascinating insights into when and how many features of human biology arose: from aspects of placental structure, vitamin C dependence and trichromatic vision, to tendencies to gout, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

The book brings together a decade's worth of research and ties it together to provide an overwhelming argument for the mammalian ancestry of the human species.

Dr Finlay says he hopes the book will be of interest to professional scientists, undergraduate and college students in both the biological and biomedical sciences, and to anyone including theologians concerned with the scientific evidences for evolution.

He says when he entered University he was fascinated by cells and DNA, but had no interest in evolution.
