Three Australian beaches in world's top 25

Three Australian beaches have been voted among the best 25 in the world.

But not only did Sydney's iconic Bondi beach not make it onto the list, it didn't even make it onto the list of the top ten Australian beaches.

A travel website revealed the winners of its "Travellers' Choice" award for beaches, based on reviews and ratings for beaches on the site in the past 12 months.

Whitehaven Beach on Queensland's Whitsunday Island was named the best beach in Australia and the South Pacific, with international travellers ranking it the fifth best in the world.

"We are very excited that the Whitehaven Beach has taken out the top award and has been recognised as one of the best beaches in the world," Whitsundays Marketing and Development Ltd chief executive Danial Rochford said.

Turquoise Bay in Western Australia and Cable Beach, near Broome, were the other two Australian beaches in the world's top 25, coming in at No 20 and No 22 respectively.

Baia do Sancho beach in the Fernando de Noronha region of Brazil was rated as the best beach in the world - with the South American country the only other, apart from Australia, to have three beaches on TripAdvisor's top 25 list.

"For those dreading the start of winter, there's really no better cure than an escape to one of these award-winning beaches," the site's chief marketing officer Barbara Messing said.

According to TripAdvisor users however, Bondi was not worthy of a mention in Australia's top ten, despite overwhelmingly positive reviews on the website. Over 75 per cent of users rated the beach excellent or very good.

But beaches including Burleigh Heads Beach, Manly Beach and Cottesloe Beach all rated above the iconic strip of Sydney sand.

Beaches in danger of losing Blue Flag status

Beaches in danger of losing Blue Flag status

Tuesday, March 18, 2014

A number of the countrys best known beaches are expected to lose their Blue Flag status as a result of the devastation caused by recent storms.

Kilkee: Blue flag beach

By Dan Buckley

There are serious concerns for some candidate Blue Flag and Green Coast Award beaches that have been devastated by the recent storms particularly where infrastructure such as access roads, car parks and other amenities have been destroyed, said Annabel FitzGerald, manager of An Taisces coastal programmes.

These are among the 32 imperative criteria required to achieve Blue Flag status. The application deadline for applying for Blue Flag status was last December, before the worst of the storms hit.

Starting next week, we will be visiting a large number of beaches and it is likely that a number of them will have to have their applications for Blue Flag status withdrawn, said Ms FitzGerald.

This is the first time we have to do this but these storms are unprecedented. Every year there are some issues raised with one or two beaches, but never to this extent.

While she was reluctant to name any beach likely to lose its flag, she said she had written to local authorities nationwide, asking them to fill out a register of infrastructural damage.

BEST IN BRITAIN: The beach at Hengistbury Head

THREE of the best beaches in the country are right here on our doorstep in Dorset, according to a new poll published today.

Hengistbury Head in Bournemouth, Sandbanks in Poole and Weymouth Beach have been named in the UKs top ten beaches listed by the TripAdvisor company.

Chris Saunders, Bournemouth tourism seafront and business development manager, said: Bournemouth Tourism is delighted that Hengistbury Head has been named fourth best beach in the UK and 16th in Europe by Trip Advisors Annual Travellers Choice Beaches awards.

As a Special Area for Conservation, it is a stunning location for visitors and residents to see and spend time, with some great facilities including a cafe, watersports centre, and it will soon be home to a new 1.2m thatched visitor centre featuring interactive displays, which is opening this spring.

We are extremely pleased that it has been recognised for the beautiful beach that it is, complementing Bournemouths seven miles of award winning beach equipped with fantastic facilities and attractions, which make the town a brilliant beach destination for all ages.

Cllr Xena Dion, spokesman for Poole councils leisure and culture said: Our beaches are an extremely important part of our environment. Not only are they a major attraction for visitors but they work to protect against coastal erosion.

We work very hard to maintain our beaches to a high standard and it is fantastic that Sandbanks has been recognised as one of the countrys top 10 beaches in what is a very influential website.

Cerabino: NASAs plan to create public asteroid hunters is full of (black) holes

NASAs looking for help in identifying potentially dangerous asteroids.

This usually isnt a good sign.

When authorities ask the general public to help them do their jobs its an indication of trouble.

Police detectives solicit the public in providing leads for their investigations only when those investigations have reached a dead end.

And when the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission came up with the 2013 Python Challenge, a call for members of the public to compete for prize money in a hunt for Burmese pythons in the Everglades, it was a sure sign that the traditional methods for getting rid of those big snakes had failed.

So Im not cheered by NASAs latest plan to do a better job at identifying the number, size and location of asteroids hurtling by the planet.

Be an asteroid hunter in NASAs First Asteroid Grand Challenge Contest Series, the space agency announced for the contest that began on Monday.

NASAs offering $35,000 in prize money over the next six months to citizen scientists who develop improved algorithms that can be used to identify asteroids.

And you thought that finding pythons in the Everglades was tough.

NASAs trying to make this sound like lots of fun.

Studying Gender in Conference Talks: Data From 223rd American Astronomical Society Meeting

James R. A. Davenport, Morgan Fouesneau, Erin Grand, Alex Hagen, Katja Poppenhaeger, Laura L. Watkins

(Submitted on 12 Mar 2014)

We present a study on the gender balance, in speakers and attendees, at the recent major astronomical conference, the American Astronomical Society meeting 223, in Washington, DC. We conducted an informal survey, yielding over 300 responses by volunteers at the meeting. Each response included gender data about a single talk given at the meeting, recording the gender of the speaker and all question-askers.

In total, 225 individual AAS talks were sampled. We analyze basic statistical properties of this sample. We find that the gender ratio of the speakers closely matched the gender ratio of the conference attendees. The audience asked an average of 2.8 questions per talk. Talks given by women had a slightly higher number of questions asked (3.2 +/- 0.2) than talks given by men (2.6 +/- 0.1).

The most significant result from this study is that while the gender ratio of speakers very closely mirrors that of conference attendees, women are under-represented in the question-asker category. We interpret this to be an age-effect, as senior scientists may be more likely to ask questions, and are more commonly men. A strong dependence on the gender of session chairs is found, whereby women ask disproportionately fewer questions in sessions chaired by men. While our results point to laudable progress in gender-balanced speaker selection, we believe future surveys of this kind would help ensure that collaboration at such meetings is as inclusive as possible.
