Freedom camper's free home with $10m view
His farm-registered SUV and makeshift lean-to with rudimentary kitchen shelves has occupied a prime corner of Auckland's waterfront for more than a year.
A so-called freedom camper and fisherman called John is bamboozling officials under pressure to move him on.
His possie is on Wynyard Pt, at the northern end of a precinct in the throes of a multibillion-dollar redevelopment, and just across the water from property developer Dave Henderson's $10 million penthouse on Princes Wharf.
John, who will not give his full name, says it is part of a "fisherman's park" allowing him a right to peaceful occupation.
He says he is not hurting anybody by being there, in the company of more occasional freedom campers and anglers, in the sun and breeze a world away from the melee of Queen St.
But another fisherman pressing Auckland Transport to take action accuses him of arrogance in monopolising the site, and obscuring a road safety sign warning motorists of a sharp right-hand bend.
"Not only is he parked in front of this sign, which is erected on to a tin fence, but he has built a shelter with kitchen shelves between his vehicle and the fence," said the complainant, who did not want to be identified.
The man said the council's transport body had painted broken yellow lines along the full eastern side of Bingham St except for the final two or three metres - under John's vehicle.
"He refused to move for them to paint there."

Liability insurance expired on March 8
Theres one less carrier serving the CNMI after it was confirmed that Freedom Air ceased flying to Saipan, Tinian, and Rota early this month.
Commonwealth Ports Authority executive director MaryAnn Lizama said Friday that the companys liability insurance was recently cancelled and CPA has been not notified of its reinstatement.
She disclosed that based on the notice of termination/cancellation of policy issued by Kudlich Insurance, Freedom Airs coverage expired on March 8, 2014. No further correspondence was received from the insurance company.
Freedom Airs activities have been grounded. It has been noted that no activities are occurring on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota. No further notice from Kudlich Insurance to cancel the notice of termination and cancellation of policy has been reported [to CPA], said Lizama during Fridays board meeting.
The cancellation, it was learned, has also been relayed to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.
Saipan Tribune tried to reach the offices of Freedom Air on Saipan, but no one answered the phone lines.
Kudlich nearly terminated Freedom Airs insurance policy in August last year due to unpaid premiums. The carrier, however, was able to pay before the deadline, resulting in its continued operation.
Aviation insurance provides coverage for hull losses as well as liability for passenger injuries, as well as environmental and third-party damage caused by aircraft accidents.

Mrs Obama, who arrived in China on Thursday evening, avoided directly criticising Beijing's draconian control of the internet, media and religion.
Social media sites including Facebook, YouTube and Twitter are blocked in China and Xi Jinping, the president, has been waging a fierce war on dissent since coming to power in November 2012.
Xu Zhiyong, a lawyer and activist behind a peaceful campaigning group called the New Citizens' Movement, was jailed for four years in January for "disrupting public order."
Earlier this month, Cao Shunli, a 52-year-old activist, died after falling into a coma while in police custody. Ms Cao, who died of apparent organ failure, had been taken into custody last September as she tried to fly out of Beijing to a human rights workshop in Geneva.
Campaigners also criticise China's handling of religion, with non-official "underground" churches banned and restrictions placed on freedom of worship, particularly in regions such as Xinjiang, which is home to a large Muslim community.
China's heavily controlled state media made no mention of Mrs Obama's comments.
The US First Lady's speech "focused on the importance of education and cultural exchanges," state broadcaster CCTV reported. "She said China is currently the fifth most popular destination for American students abroad."
Students had given Mrs Obama "a warm welcome," CCTV added.
Mrs Obama arrived in China on Thursday night and on Friday toured its capital with Peng Liyuan, the first lady, and met Xi Jinping at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse.

Freedom Rock CFC petitions for charter school
MERIDIAN A Meridian congregation is among a dozen groups statewide that have filed applications for the first charter schools in Mississippi.
Freedom Rock Christian Fellowship Church and its parent organization, New Destiny Urban Community Development Corporation, have submitted a petition for the New Destiny Charter Academy, also referred to as "The Academy." The Academy is a two-phase project, which, in the first two years SY2014-2014 and SY2015-2016 will serve students from K-3, and beginning in SY2016-17 will begin additionally serving grades 4-5.
Lawmakers in 2013 approved an expanded law allowing charter schools public schools run by private groups that agree to meet certain standards in exchange for less regulation after a two-year fight.
According to Elder LaBaron Hedgemon, pastor of Freedom Rock, that approval granted the Meridian congregation the go-ahead to a longtime vision.
"As a congregation, we have always had a passion to try to meet the needs of children in every area, Meridian and Lauderdale County. Outside of other things we do geared to serving the community, the desire to start a school was there three years ago," Hedgemon said.
Charter schools are public schools with unique traits such as flexibility and accountability. And, like public schools, they are government funded.
But while the number of petitions submitted to establish such institutions statewide has been impressive, there has also been much opposition from educators, parents and the community.
Obviously, my stance is and always will be that I want what is best for the children of Meridian. That being said, I dont think that charter schools are the best option for Meridians children," Meridian Public School Superintendent Dr. Alvin Taylor said.
"The main reason that I feel this way is because charter schools do not have to follow the same rules and regulations that public schools have to follow. For example, their students are not required to pass state tests; they do not have graduation requirements; and all of the teachers and administrators in charter schools are not required to be licensed."
"It is the goal of the Meridian Public School District to provide the best education possible by serving all students, and I strongly believe that our District is the best option for the children of Meridian," Taylor said. "Charter schools cant exist without taking students from existing schools; therefore, costing schools in our community valuable resources and jobs. Therefore, charter schools will be detrimental to public education in our community.

Hitlers favorite American: Biological fascism in the shadow of New York City
Growing up in Charlottesville, Virginia, in the early 1900s, young Carrie Buck impressed those she met as serious and self-possessed, someone whose quiet demeanor hinted at a life filled with challenges. Of humble originsher widowed mother had given her up to foster care as a childthe stocky, darkhaired girl didnt let her difficulties get her down. She enjoyed reading the newspaper, liked to fiddle with crossword puzzles, and always made herself useful around the house. She was a bit awkward in social situations, but otherwise she was a thoroughly average teenager. No one had any reason to think differently of her. Then something terrible occurred that changed Carries life forever.
In 1923, when she was seventeen, Carrie Buck was raped by a nephew of her foster parents. The girl became pregnant, and her foster parentsperhaps embarrassed by what their nephew had donedecided to hide the girl away by committing her to the Virginia Colony for the Epileptic and Feebleminded, a mental facility in the town of Lynchburg. Carries birth mother had previously been committed to the same institution, accused of being mentally deficient and promiscuous. The same reasons were given for Carries incarceration. It was a classic case of punishing the victim.
Carrie had her baby in the spring of 1924, the same year that Virginia passed a law permitting the involuntary sterilization of those judged to be mentally impaired. The statute grew out of the early twentieth centurys widely influential eugenics movement, a now discredited cousin of genetics that attempted to improve American society by breeding out a long list of undesirable traits ascribed to minorities, the poor, and certain immigrant populations. At the same time, eugenicists hoped to foster the increase of good breeding traits by encouraging high-grade citizens to go forth and multiply (the word eugenics means well born).
Its no surprise that complacently comfortable white folks conceived and promoted this scheme of biological discrimination. According to eugenicists, if you werent of Nordic or Anglo-Saxon heritage, your genes were second rate. Even if you were white, if you happened to be epileptic, mentally ill, illegitimate, unemployed, homeless, a sexually active single woman, an alcoholic, a convicted criminal, or a prostituteall signs of feeblemindedness or hereditary degeneracyyou were a threat to the purity of the nations gene pool. Eugenicists advocated three ways of dealing with the perceived problem of bad genes: immigration restrictions, the prevention of unfit marriages, and involuntary sterilization of defective individuals in state care, chiefly mental patients and prison inmates.
Carrie Buck had the misfortune of being the first Virginia resident chosen for compulsory sterilization. Her case became a test of the constitutionality of the states new law, a challenge that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. With little justification beyond a family history of poverty and illegitimacy, Carrie and her birth mother were both portrayed as sexually deviant simpletons. Even Carries baby girl was said to be not quite normal. Years later, researchers determined that all three family members were of average intelligence, and that the arguments for Carries sterilization were based on faulty, biased testimony. These people belong to the shiftless, ignorant and worthless class of anti-social whites of the South, one so-called expert declaredwithout ever having met Carrie Buck or her mother.
Despite the flimsy testimony presented in the case, the Supreme Court upheld the Virginia law in 1927 by an eight-to-one margin, with justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. issuing this shocking pronouncement: It is better for all the world, if instead of waiting to execute degenerate offspring for crime, or to let them starve for their imbecility, society can prevent those who are manifestly unfit from continuing their kind. . . . Three generations of imbeciles are enough. Shortly afterward, Carrie Buck, a perfectly normal citizen of the United States, was sterilized against her will. It was an outrage destined to be repeated many times overmostly against poor, uneducated womenas the dark age of eugenics spread across the land in the 1920s, 30s, and 40s.
Thousands of activists had a hand in creating the conditions that permitted the abuse of Carrie Buck and others like her, but few bear a greater measure of responsibility than biologist Charles Davenport, a man who spent more than three decades leading the campaign for racial purity in the United States. In essence, Davenport and his fellow eugenicists sought to create a master race of white Protestant Yankees, with all the frightening ramifications that implies. (Imagine the banality of an entire nation of Ward and June Cleavers.) Aside from being morally repulsive, their goal amounted to second-rate science, since biological strength lies in genetic diversity, not sameness.
Davenports offenses went beyond the harm he caused here at home. His lengthy collaboration with eugenicists in Nazi Germany contributed to that countrys brutal racial policies. Today, we rightly reject what Davenport and others like him stood for as white supremacy gone berserk. In his own time, though, Davenport was hailed as a trailblazer, an honorable scientist who studied and taught at our nations most prestigious institutions of higher learning. Davenports chilling story demonstrates that when prejudice and public policy mix, the result can be a humanitarian nightmare.
A lanky, goatee-sporting man who favored all-white suits, Charles Benedict Davenport was the product of a puritanical upbringing. He was born in 1866 on his familys farm near Stamford, Connecticut. In his childhood and early teens, he spent the spring and summer months working on the farm. The rest of the year, he lived in Brooklyn, where his domineering father ran a successful real estate and insurance business. Davenport attended Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, earning a bachelor of science in civil engineering in 1886. In 1889, he received a bachelors degree from Harvard University, followed by a doctorate in zoology in 1892.
Even as a student, Davenport wrote prolifically, which he continued to do after being hired as an instructor at Harvard in 1893. A primary area of interest for the young scholar was the study of heredity and selective breeding in animals, a topic his years on the farm gave him practical insight into. His writing earned him a favorable reputation, and in 1899 the University of Chicago offered him an assistant professorship. In 1904, Davenport left Chicago to become the director of the new Station for Experimental Evolution at Cold Spring Harbor, New York, a genetics research center funded by the Carnegie Institution. It was the perfect place for Davenport to cultivate his interests in evolution, heredity, and eugenics.

Cris Cyborg: Ronda Rousey thinks Gina Carano is an easy fight
Every time Ronda Rousey gives an interview, Cristiane "Cyborg" Justino is one of the topics.
During a media day in Dallas, Texas, before UFC 171, womens bantamweight champion opened up about a rumored bout with MMA veteran Gina Carano, and "Rowdy" said she wouldnt mind moving up to fight Carano.
"There are exceptions that I would make for Gina that I wouldn't make for anyone else," Rousey said.
By anyone else, Rousey means Cyborg.
Cyborg, a former Strikeforce champion and current Invicta FC featherweight kingpin, wasnt surprised to hear that Rousey would move up to fight Carano after stating several times that the Brazilian should cut down to 135 if she wanted to fight her.
"I wasnt surprised because I knew how tough is for Gina to go down to 135, so (this fight) would need to be a catchweight," Cyborg told MMAFighting.com.
"Gina Carano is a great athlete and Id happy if she returns to MMA, doesnt matter if its against Ronda. But she hasnt fought since 2009. Her last fight was against me at Strikeforce, so I believe that Ronda thinks its such an easy fight that she would even move up. She knows that it would be different against me, especially because I already defeated Gina."
Cyborg didnt make a prediction on who would have won a fight between Rousey and Carano, but believes that ring rust would be an important factor.
"They both are great athletes and have chances to win," she said, "but Gina Carano hasnt fought for four years so shes not in a good rhythm."
Cris Cyborg returns to action on March 28 in a muay thai title fight against Jorina Baars at Lion Fight in Las Vegas, Nev., but is confident that she will make her bantamweight debut in MMA this year.
