March 26, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets Utica Comets Director of Hockey Operations Pat Conacher announced today that the Canucks have re-assigned left wing Ludwig Blomstrand to the AHL Utica Comets from the ECHL Kalamazoo Wings.

Last year, Blomstrand split the season with the AHL Chicago Wolves and Sweden-1 Djurgardens IF Stockholm. The 6'1", 198-pound forward registered two points (1-1-2) and 2 penalty minutes in eight games with the Wolves.

Blomstrand was selected by Vancouver in the fourth round (#120 overall) in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Inside the Comets: Director of Communications Mark Caswell, Jr.

March 26, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets Someone, please get Mark Caswell, Jr. a pair of sneakers to wear in The AUD.

When going to the Utica Comets staff page on the web, as you scroll halfway down, "Mark Caswell, Jr. - Director of Communications" is found. However, when The AUD's doors swing open for business, the Utica native is more than likely among the first to be flagged down by a multitude of people.

From the response Caswell, 28, receives, either walking the corridor inside The AUD, or seating aisles, everyone seems to know or have a connection to him. He smiles and shakes hands, seemingly personalizing each contact, with sincerity and understanding. In another profession Caswell could be well-prepared for an elective position. When shadowing Caswell what you see is what you get.

On a cold Wednesday February evening, the southwest based San Antonio Rampage are visiting Utica for a date with the Comets. For the better part of 20 minutes, I have been in search of Caswell. The press box, the Comets office, and the team locker rooms, usual haunts by the club's communications director, prior to game time show no trace of him. Walking from one end of The AUD's corridor to the other, Caswell is finally located.

It's 6:15pm, with all his pending demands for the evening ahead, it's at the 50/50 raffle kiosk where the communication director is keeping busy. Outside of section 215, what has become a big business boom for the Comets' charitable arm of the 50/50 offerings, the kiosk isn't working properly. A steady line of would-be customers are lining up for their chance to leave the evening several thousands of dollars richer.

With the kiosk's attendant having difficulty signing in, Caswell, a social media/computer specialist, within minutes solves the problem. Comets commerce resumes with gusto. Then, what has become familiar since opening night last October, the Caswell speed-walk kicks off. Tonight's starting line is a brief visit to the media room. Across from the now fully functional kiosk are stairs leading to ground level of The AUD.

Picking up a bottle of Coca~Cola, Caswell heads for his next "house call". Moving with the energy of someone who is just coming off an eight-hour sleep, when in actuality quite the opposite has been experienced by the former ESPN Stats Analyst. On this game day, as is routine with all Comets home dates, by puck drop, Caswell will already have put in close to a dozen hours of work.

Equipped with a key to the office, by 7:30am Caswell begins to ramp up the necessities for the night's activities. "The home team supplies the league stats, we print and supply game notes for the coaches and in the press box," Caswell said while en route to the Comets locker room.

There are two junior Comets players who appear to be between five and seven-years old; tonight's "tunnel team". Positioned against the wall, next to the open glass leading on to the ice, with their parents watching off to the side, these two fans get to give and receive high-fives to the players. Led by goalie Joacim Eriksson, followed by Nicklas Jensen, one by one the excited twosome give their hockey heroes an appreciative send-off.

Requests continued to come in as Caswell's phone constantly goes off. The next crisis requiring Caswell's undivided attention comes from the Rampage's coaching room. The team's video equipment isn't working. With difficulties in the electrical connections Caswell, who attended SUNY Cortland and studied Sports Management, puts out a call for an electrician.

Super Readers

INDIANAPOLIS Growing up, Indianapolis Colts tight end Dwayne Allen said he didnt have anyone who pushed him to read. But now, Allen is aiming to be that voice to Hoosiers of all ages by working with the Indianapolis Public Library to promote reading.

Recently, Allen initiated the Super Read Challenge, which encouraged residents to read throughout the month of February for a chance to win 2014-15 Colts season tickets.

A presentation in the Central Librarys West Reading Room Thursday marked the culmination of the challenge, as library officials and Allen announced that the winner was Indianapolis resident Melanie Ohlsen.

Indianapolis Public Library CEO Jackie Nytes gave everyone a background of the reading program.

We have had a great relationship with all of our professional sports teams here in our city, Nytes said. Since Colts player Dwayne Allens rookie season, he has been a real leader in that relationship that weve had. This is not his first visit to Central Library at all hes absolutely earned his library stripes. In fact, it was determined just a few weeks back, he is an official storyteller. We think we have room for him in our ranks if he ever gets tired of football.

Nytes said the idea behind the program was to promote reading throughout Black History Month especially books that had Black History and Civil Rights themes.

In an attempt to motivate Indianapolis residents to do a little bit more reading, he was the one who dreamed up this challenge to win Colts tickets, Nytes said. We spend a lot of time trying to think of contest ideas and ways to get people into the library. It is really thrilling when someone like Dwayne calls up and says Ive got an idea. That is just the neatest thing in the whole world. The community really responded.

In that one month Nytes said 38,072 children and adults took part in the Super Reading Challenge, checking out a total of 283,023 books.

To pick a winner, Nytes said each book that was checked out was given a number and then at the end of the challenge a computer randomly picked out the winning number, which happened to be Olsen.

Olsen said she had checked out The Invention of Wings by Sue Kidd Monk, an Oprah Book Club selection about two women linked by the horrors of slavery.

Pioneers in Adult Stem Cell Therapy Honored

The Alliance for the Advancement of Adult Stem Cell Therapy and Research hosted an awards luncheon for doctors and patients from around the world to recognize and honor their outstanding contributions and achievements in adult stem cell therapy. The Stem Cell Alliance event celebrated the revolutionary strides in the field of adult stem cell treatments for cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, spinal cord injuries and vascular diseases.

The Stem Cell Alliance event celebrated the revolutionary strides in the field of adult stem cell treatments for cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, spinal cord injuries and vascular diseases. Kelly Drouin of the Stem Cell Alliance, conferred awards to the Regenocyte medical team including Doctors Zannos Grekos, Hector Rosario, Eduardo Mejia and, in absentia, Victor Matos for their work and dedication in adult stem cell research and treatment.

These doctors are pioneers in clinical application of adult stem cell therapy and heroes to the many patients in attendance. Some of the patients had lost all hope after being told by their own doctors that they were out of options in the treatment of their disease, said Drouin.

The Stem Cell Alliance also recognized and awarded each of the attending patients for their courage and for leading the way for others to follow by undergoing adult stem cell treatment. Each patient spoke with heartfelt conviction; describing their prognosis and the life-saving benefits of the adult stem cell therapy they received.

Quality of life improvements measured by being able to independently transfer or dress yourself or walking without a cane, not needing an oxygen tank, or no longer requiring a defibrillator are priceless, stated Jonathan Fields, adult stem cell recipient and founder of the Jonathan Fields Save a Life Heal a Heart Foundation, dedicated to the advancement of adult stem cells for the treatment of heart disease.

The Alliance for the Advancement of Adult Stem Cell Therapy and Researchs mission is to educate the public on the process and the benefits of non-controversial adult stem cell therapy, to promote the use of adult stem cells in the research and treatment of life-altering diseases and, lastly, to provide financial assistance to those who medically qualify and cannot otherwise afford treatment.
