Cristiane 'Cyborg' Justino battles for Muay Thai title, but knows move to bantamweight is key

Cris "Cyborg" Justino, the elephant in the room when any discussion of Ronda Rousey as the best woman fighter in the world is brought up, has a battle plan that includes proving late this summer that she can make 135 pounds, and challenge the UFC champion in her own weight class. But first, she battles for the Lion Fight Muay Thai welterweight title Friday night against Jorina Baars.

Cris "Cyborg" Justino is now talking openly about fighting at 135 pounds, with a time frame of the late summer or early fall set for her debut in the new division.

This, of course, is to open the door to fight with UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey.

Making 135 isn't going to be easy for someone who said she was 165 pounds with four percent body fat before cutting this week. She wasn't expecting it to be a piece of cake cutting to 145 for her Muay Thai fight on Friday night with two-time champion Jorina Baars of The Netherlands. The bout, a five-rounder to create the women's welterweight (145 pound) title, airs live on AXS TV, from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. She's had issues making 145 in the past, including one fight being only able to get down to 151 before the California commission ordered her to stop cutting over health reasons. But she has made 145 for seven MMA fights and two kickboxing matches since 2009. Baars, 25, has had her own problems getting fights of late. She has a 35-0-3 record, but it's been three years since she's fought last. Baars has claimed nobody in Europe was willing to face her.

But no matter who Justino is fighting, the discussion always ends up in the same place, with Rousey.

She has claimed Rousey is trying to avoid her. Rousey, on the other hand, stated that she believes the failed test has made Justino's entire career a fraud. She's always said she would be willing to face her, whether she was clean or not, if she got to 135 pounds. UFC did try and put the fight together last year as it's first woman's fight ever. But negotiations at the time broke down over money, and Rousey instead faced Liz Carmouche.

At the time, Justino said, for health reasons, she couldn't make that weight. But now, among her biggest goals this year is to prove the opposite.

After Friday, her schedule is for a May MMA fight in Invicta at 145 pounds, a July return to Muay Thai with Lion Fights, also at 145, and then making 135 for the first time for an Invicta fight in either August or September.

She said if it was up to her, she'd like to fight every two months, and if there's an opening, she's also up for competing in jiu-jitsu tournaments this year.

"I (will) try to make 135," she said. "I will try. I think it's very important to make 135 so I can fight for the belt, and because I want to keep that weight class because there are more girls I can fight. I can fight a superfight. I'm already the champ at 145 (she holds the featherweight title with Invicta). I don't want to be selfish. I want one more belt. If I can fight at 135 for the belt, it's okay. I can fight at 145 and be more healthy. But it's not possible at 145 or a catch weight because Ronda is running from me. If I make 135, Ronda can't run."

Jorina Baars on Lion Fight 14 victory over Cris Cyborg: 'It's my sport'

LAS VEGAS -- If you're looking for the person least surprised that Jorina Baars defeated Cris Cyborg on Friday night at Lion Fight 14, look no further than Baars herself.

"I'm a Muay Thai fighter. She's an MMA fighter," Baars told MMAFighting.com following her upset win. "I will beat her. That's every opponent, I will beat them. It's my sport. It's my style."

Baars, 25, while not as outwardly menacing as the current Invicta FC featherweight champion, is nonetheless undefeated over the course of her professional kickboxing career, which includes several title-winning performances.

The Netherlands native's reputation is said to have grown so imposing that it forced her into inactivity for three years, as no fighter in Europe was willing to challenge her.

"I'm never intimidated of an opponent," Baars said. "The gameplan was to put Cris in my range and stick with the knees, and when she comes in, put a knee up or a kick push attempt in her face. It worked."

Baars knocked Cyborg down early in the opening frame with a front kick, then continued to unload a steady diet of hard knees and kicks to ultimately score a unanimous decision win by scores of 49-45, 48-45 and 49-44, capturing the inaugural Lions Fight women's welterweight title.

Yet Cyborg, a relative newcomer to the sport of Muay Thai, was anything but dismayed in defeat.

"I'm so happy because I gave her five rounds with her, a champion of Muay Thai," Cyborg said. "No girl wants to fight her. She hasn't fought in three years.

"She's had eight belts and 38 fights, zero (losses). She's never lost. I have two fights in Muay Thai.

"She had a good gameplan against me," Cyborg added. "She's tall. It's hard to punch her in the face. ... The first round I said, okay, I can lose this fight. But I fought hard, I was ready for a war."

The cyborg sports invasion is coming

Relaxnews Mar 28, 2014

The world's first Cybathlon, a sporting competition designed for bionic athletes, is set to take place in Zurich in 2016.

While current parathletic events allow athletes to use prosthetics to get to the same sporting capacity as able-bodied participants, the Cybathlon will actively encourage the use and development of pioneering robotic technology.

Prizes will be awarded to both the winning athletes in each event and to the company behind the software or technological device used.

Organized on behalf of the Swiss National Competence Center of Research in Robotics (NCCR Robotics), the competition is open to technology already available on the market, or to research development projects by laboratories.

Six separate events will be open to athletes -- a BCI (Brain Computer Interface) race, an FES (Functional Electrical Stimulation) bike race, a leg prosthetics race, a powered exoskeleton race, a powered wheelchair race and an arm prosthetics race.

"The rules of the competition are made in such way that the novel technology will give the pilot an advantage over a pilot that would use a comparable but less advanced or conventional assistive technology," explains the event's website.

"There will be as few technical constraints as possible, in order to encourage the device providers to develop novel and powerful solutions."

'Cyborg' adds another potential fight to busy 2014, plans move to 135

Cristiane Justino(12-1) may be adding another fight to whats shaping up to be the most ambitious year of her career.

Cyborgappeared Thursday on MMAjunkie Radio prior to her featherweight title bout at Lion Fight 14 and said she could defend her title in July if successful against undefeated kickboxer Jorina Baars.

Additionally, she targeted September for a drop to 135 pounds, where she hopes to meet UFC womens bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey.

This is my plan, Justino said.

Lion Fight 14 takes place tonight at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas and airs live on AXS TV.

If Justinos schedule holds, the 28-year-old Invicta FC featherweight champ could be fighting at least four times this year, which would make it the busiest of her professional career.

Justino has struggled to find suitable contenders in her rise to the top of the womens featherweight division, and she spent almost two years on the bench after testing positive for steroids and being stripped of her belt in the now-defunct Strikeforce. Now with Invicta and Lion Fights, she is mounting a campaign to earn the biggest fight of her life a UFC title fight with Rousey.

If Justino beats Baars, she said she would move on to defend her Invicta featherweight title in early summer, then defend her Lion Fight belt, then drop to 135 pounds to vie for the Invicta bantamweight title, and then, possibly, meet Rousey in the UFC. Some are skeptical whether Justino can drop to bantamweight with her muscular frame, but she has enlisted a doctor to help her in the process. Her reps have said that while an extended career at 135 pounds isnt advisable, she can compete in the division for a shorter stint.

Once fiercely critical, UFC President Dana White appears to be cooling toward Justino after her split his longtime rival, former UFC champ Tito Ortiz.

He doesnt have any more excuses, because I dont work any more with Tito, Justino said. Hes no longer my manager. Im waiting.

Head to 'Borawan' and these 5 unspoiled PH beaches

MANILA, Philippines - Mention beautiful white beaches and Boracay or Palawan come to mind. While these are indeed worth a visit, you need not go far and spend on airfare to enjoy the beauty of a white beach. For those with budget and time constraints, there are plenty of beaches and pristine at that 4 to 6 hours away from Manila.

Be prepared to let go of some comforts and go back to the basics, though. But you may find this small sacrifice worth it when you come face to face with the beauty of these unspoiled beaches.

These beach trips are likely to cost around P2,000 and below per person, assuming you are in a group of at least four people. With a few tips from travel bloggers, here are a few options:

1. Borawan, Puting Buhangin, and Dampalitan Beach, Padre Burgos, Quezon

PALAWAN AND BORACAY IN ONE. Borawan, whose name is a combination of the two beach destinations, boasts white sand and towering karsts. Photo by Angel Valle Caronongan

Borawans name is a combination of Boracay and Palawan, named because of its relatively fine white sand and its rock formations reminiscent of Palawans. Its neighboring beach Puting Buhangin, of course, does have white sand and also has a cave partially submerged in water for adventurers to explore. Another nearby beach, Dampalitan, is a simple white beach where travelers on a budget usually set up camp before exploring the two other islands.

ADVENTURE CALLS. Aside from beach bumming, visiting Kwebang Lampas just beyond the shore in Puting Buhangin beach is a must. Photo by Kenneth Lagaa

Kenneth Lagaa of Mr. Bratpacker recommends beach bumming on different islands and discusses the pros and cons of setting up camp on each here.

Accomodations: While Borawan is the most popular among the islands, it is also the more expensive but with the cleanest basic toilet and bathing facilities. It has an entrance fee of P80 and a tent rental of P500. If you have your own tent, you pay P200 for pitching. It also has cottages for camping, and separate charges for bathing and use of toilet. A chartered boat round trip to Borawan costs P800.

If you opt to go to Dampalitan and Puting Buhangin, though, the boat trip costs P1800 (good for 8 people). Puting Buhangins entrance is also P80, though its tent rental is only P300-P400. Dampalitan, meanwhile, has a P20 entrance fee and a P100 charge for tent pitching. This payment is optional, though, so you can just donate the amount you can give.

Florida beaches no shell game

CAYO COSTA, Fla. -- They shuffle along the beaches, eyes cast down, as if in a trance.

Occasionally, they dig in the sand with their toes, or with specialized shovels. They, shellers combing the beaches of Floridas outer islands, are searching for treasures in the form of Augers, Angel Wings, Buttons, Ceriths or Coquinas.

Shelling is a popular activity on Sanibel, North Captiva, Cayo Costa and other Gulf Coast islands. Businesses such as Captiva Cruises offer excursions just for shelling.

Its one of the top three places in the world to go shelling, said Brian Holaway. These out islands dont have as many people that shell on the islands. This morning there were 40 people on this beach (Cayo Costa) as opposed to 4,000. Ive been doing this for 20 years, and Ive had people go out with me for 15 years, at every time of the year.

The trip to Cayo Costa, an isolated island off the southwest coast of Florida, involved a 30-minute boat ride from Captiva Island. Shellers were turned loose on the beach for several hours to hunt their treasures.

We go out to the outer islands, Cayo Costa, and we have trips to other islands, Holaway said. We go to the islands that are only accessible by boat, and to the state parks so there arent as many people there. Its a lot of the same shells, but not as many people on the beaches.

The Gulf Coast islands, with their sandy beaches and shallow flats, are natural depositories for shells.

Just because of the orientation of the islands, and its very shallow out in the Gulf of Mexico, so along the whole Gulf Coast here, Holaway said. Sanibel runs east and west so it can act as a little catch pit. The other islands are still good, but Sanibel is east and west, so it can kind of catch them differently.

Sanibel is known for its shelling, but it is also the most populated of the islands.

Shells can be found nearly anywhere on these beaches. However, not all shelling trips are created equal.

Is there truly anything new under the Sun? Well, when it comes to amateur astronomy, many observers are branching out beyond the optical. And while its true that you cant carry out infrared or X-ray astronomy from your backyard or at least, not until amateurs begin launching their own space telescopes you can join in the exciting world of amateur radio astronomy.

Well admit right out the gate that were a relative neophyte when it comes to the realm of radio astronomy. Weve done radio observations of meteor showers in tandem with optical observations and have delved into the trove of information on constructing radio telescopes over the years. Consider this post a primer of sorts, an intro into the world of radio amateur astronomy. If theres enough interest, well follow up with a multi-part saga, constructing and utilizing our own ad-hoc redneck array in our very own backyard with which to alarm the neighbors and probe the radio cosmos.

And much like our exploits in planetary webcam imaging, weve discovered that you may have gear kicking around in the form of an old TV dish remember satellite TV? in your very own backyard. A simple radio telescope setup need not consist of anything more sophisticated than a dish (receiver), a signal strength detector (often standard for pointing a dish at a satellite during traditional installation) and a recorder. As you get into radio astronomy, youll want to include such essentials as mixers, oscillators, and amplifiers to boost your signal.

Frequency is the name of the game in amateur radio astronomy, and most scopes are geared towards the 18 megahertz to 10,000 megahertz range. A program known as Radio-SkyPipe makes a good graphic interface to turn your laptop into a recorder.

Radio astronomy was born in 1931, when Karl Jansky began researching the source of a faint background radio hiss with his dipole array while working for Bell Telephone. Jansky noticed the signal strength corresponded to the passage of the sidereal day, and correctly deduced that it was coming from the core of our Milky Way galaxy in the constellation Sagittarius. Just over a decade later, Australian radio astronomer Ruby Payne-Scott pioneered solar radio astronomy at the end of World War II, making the first ever observations of Type I and III solar bursts as well as conducting the first radio interferometry observation.

What possible targets exist for the radio amateur astronomer? Well, just like those astronomers of yore, youll be able to detect the Sun, the Milky Way Galaxy, Geostationary and geosynchronous communication satellites and more. The simple dish system described above can also detect temperature changes on the surface of the Moon as it passes through its phases. Jupiter is also a fairly bright radio target for amateurs as well.

Astronomy club to host Jupiter viewing

Published Mar 28, 2014 at 4:23 pm (Updated Mar 28, 2014)

VERNON The Skylands Astronomy Club will host a special observing event at the Wallkill Wildlife Refuge Headquarters on Friday.

This event kicks off with Jupiter observing. The public will be treated to views of Jupiter and its moons. Telescopes also will be trained on star clusters, double stars and nebulae.

While Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system, it is so far away that it appears just like any other bright star. However, even the smallest telescope shows a wealth of detail. The observer will see the four largest, or Galilean, moons. Also visible will be the cloud belts and the Great Red Spot, which is a hurricane that has been raging on the planet for at least 300 years.

'); //-->

Early spring is also a great time for observing the Orion Nebula. This cloudy complex is located under the belt of the constellation Orion. It is a place of star formation and its milky appearance is visible in even the smallest telescopes. At the center of the nebula, four newborn stars, called the Trapezium, are clearly seen.

The waxing Moon will be in the western sky for this event. Telescopes will show craters, ridges and mountains on the lunar surface. The thin crescent of the moon affords the observer the chance to see the shadows cast by the sun and the night/day terminator.

This event is open to the public and all ages are welcome. The skywatch begins at sunset on Friday and will be held in the lower parking lot of the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge headquarters on Route 565 in Vernon.

Arrive early and dress warmly. Visit http://www.skylandsastronomy.com.

First Sightings Of Solar Flare Phenomena Confirm 3-D Models Of Space Weather

Video of magnetic field lines slipping reconnection bring scientists a step closer to predicting when and where large flares will occur

Scientists have for the first time witnessed the mechanism behind explosive energy releases in the Suns atmosphere, confirming new theories about how solar flares are created.

New footage put together by an international team led by University of Cambridge researchers shows how entangled magnetic field lines looping from the Suns surface slip around each other and lead to an eruption 35 times the size of the Earth and an explosive release of magnetic energy into space.

The discoveries of a gigantic energy build-up bring us a step closer to predicting when and where large flares will occur, which is crucial in protecting the Earth from potentially devastating space weather. The study is published in The Astrophysical Journal.

While solar flares have long been a spectacular reminder of our stars power, they are also associated with Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) eruptions of solar material with a twisted magnetic structure flying out of the Sun and into interplanetary space.

Space weather such as CMEs has been identified as a significant risk to the countrys infrastructure by the UKs National Risk Register. Late last year The UKs MET Office announced it would set up a daily space weather forecast to work with the USAs Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC).

The papers lead author, Dr Jaroslav Dudik, Royal Society Newton International Fellow at the University of Cambridges Centre for Mathematical Sciences, said: We care about this as during flares we can have CMEs and sometimes they are sent in our direction. Human civilization is nowadays maintained by technology and that technology is vulnerable to space weather. Indeed, CMEs can damage satellites and therefore have an enormous financial cost.
