Baars after defeating Cyborg says 'It's my sport'

LAS VEGAS -- If you're looking for the person least surprised that Jorina Baars defeated Cris Cyborg on Friday night at Lion Fight 14, look no further than Baars herself.

"I'm a Muay Thai fighter. She's an MMA fighter," Baars told MMAFighting.com following her upset win. "I will beat her. That's every opponent, I will beat them. It's my sport. It's my style."

Baars, 25, while not as outwardly menacing as the current Invicta FC featherweight champion, is nonetheless undefeated over the course of her professional kickboxing career, which includes several title-winning performances.

The Netherlands native's reputation is said to have grown so imposing that it forced her into inactivity for three years, as no fighter in Europe was willing to challenge her.

"I'm never intimidated of an opponent," Baars said. "The gameplan was to put Cris in my range and stick with the knees, and when she comes in, put a knee up or a kick push attempt in her face. It worked."

Baars knocked Cyborg down early in the opening frame with a front kick, then continued to unload a steady diet of hard knees and kicks to ultimately score a unanimous decision win by scores of 49-45, 48-45 and 49-44, capturing the inaugural Lions Fight women's welterweight title.

Yet Cyborg, a relative newcomer to the sport of Muay Thai, was anything but dismayed in defeat.

"I'm so happy because I gave her five rounds with her, a champion of Muay Thai," Cyborg said. "No girl wants to fight her. She hasn't fought in three years.

"She's had eight belts and 38 fights, zero (losses). She's never lost. I have two fights in Muay Thai.

"She had a good gameplan against me," Cyborg added. "She's tall. It's hard to punch her in the face. ... The first round I said, okay, I can lose this fight. But I fought hard, I was ready for a war."

Cris 'Cyborg' Justino Defeated by Jorina Baars in Kickboxing at Lion Fight 14

Former Strikeforce champion and current Invicta FC champion Cris "Cyborg" Justino has just tasted defeat for the first time in a long, long while.

Competing in a Muay Thai kickboxing match Friday at Lion Fight 14, Cyborg dropped a unanimous decision in her title fight opposite Jorina Baars. The Dutch kickboxer entered the night with an impressive 35-0-3 record in Muay Thai, and remained undefeated in her return after a three-year hiatus from kickboxing.

In the first round, Baars twice rocked Cyborg, once with a front kick that caught her as she was coming in, and again with a headkick. Baars continued controlling much of the fight, stifling Cyborg with her rangy jab and kicks. It looked early on like Cyborg may have gassed out. She battled back hard in the final two rounds, but was unable to bridge the gap on the scorecards.

In the end, Baars got the nod from all three judges to the tune of 49-45, 48-45, 49-44.

Cyborg has bounced between competition in MMA, with Invicta FC, and kickboxing, with Lion Fight, since 2013. She debuted with Lion Fight in 2013 with a third-round knockout of Jennifer Holcomb. Worth noting, though, was that she looked a bit less muscular for this bout compared to recent outings (which may suggest she is looking to make good on her promises to drop to 135 pounds and retire Ronda Rousey).

For Baars, this provides a much-needed reboot to her kickboxing career. She credits her undefeated record for keeping her out of the ring for nearly three years, during that time amassing a humble 1-3 professional record (not including a 0-1 amateur record) in MMA. It will be interesting to see where she goes from here, and what Lion Fight can do to keep her active now that she owns their belt.

An AI that mimics our neocortex is taking on the neural networks and this is how it'll do it

Feature Jeff Hawkins has bet his reputation, fortune, and entire intellectual life on one idea: that he understands the brain well enough to create machines with an intelligence we recognize as our own.

If his bet is correct, the Palm Pilot inventor will father a new technology, one that becomes the crucible in which a general artificial intelligence is one day forged. If his bet is wrong, then Hawkins will have wasted his life. At 56 years old that might sting a little.

"I want to bring about intelligent machines, machine intelligence, accelerated greatly from where it was going to happen and I don't want to be consumed I want to come out at the other end as a normal person with my sanity," Hawkins told The Register. "My mission, the mission of Numenta, is to be a catalyst for machine intelligence."

A catalyst, he said, staring intently at your correspondent, "is something which accelerates a reaction by a thousand or ten thousand or a million-fold, and doesn't get consumed in the process."

His goal is ambitious, to put it mildly.

Before we dig deep into Hawkins' idiosyncratic approach to artificial intelligence, it's worth outlining the state of current AI research, why his critics have a right to be skeptical of his grandiose claims, and how his approach is different to the one being touted by consumer web giants such as Google.

AI researcher Jeff Hawkins

The road to a successful, widely deployable framework for an artificial mind is littered with failed schemes, dead ends, and traps. No one has come to the end of it, yet. But while major firms like Google and Facebook, and small companies like Vicarious, are striding over well-worn paths, Hawkins believes he is taking a new approach that could lead him and his colleagues at his company, Numenta, all the way.

For over a decade, Hawkins has poured his energy into amassing enough knowledge about the brain and about how to program it in software. Now, he believes he is on the cusp of a great period of invention that may yield some very powerful technology.
