Same-Sex Fight Now Called Religious Liberty

Hobby Lobby, which employs 13,000 people, is suing the federal government. Hobby Lobby says their religious liberty is threatened by the Affordable Care Act (AKA Obamacare) because they should not be forced to participate in what they view as life-terminating contraception, including IUDs and the so-called morning-after pill.

The thrust of the argument is based on the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), a law passed in 1993. The RFRA requires that the government show compelling interest when a persons religious rights are substantially burdened by what the government wishes to do

As the News-Gazette points out, the only problem for Hobby Lobby is that it is not clear whether that laws protections extend to companies.

The backdrop for this showdown is a changing landscape, where the Bush-era defeats of same-sex marriage including several state ballot initiatives that defined marriage as only between a man and a woman are now being pushed aside. Same-sex marriages and civil rights are winning. In fact, some are asking if the Southern Baptist Convention is giving up on the same-sex fight altogether.

But evangelicals are looking for a new front on which to fight the war. And that front is now called religious liberty.

The Washington Examiner says that Russell Moore, the president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, is seeking to redefine their battle, this time in an effort to make sure that, even if they cant keep homsexuals from marrying, they can at least not be forced to be ok with it.

And, of course, this extends into politics, candidates that evangelicals should support, and policy pushes. When asked about his ideal candidate for president in this new landscape, Moore said:

I would want a presidential candidate who understands the public good of marriage, and one who is not hostile to evangelical concerns, and who is going to protect religious liberty and freedom of conscience. We have been saying, Look, same-sex marriage is inevitable in American culture. It doesnt mean we should stop talking about it It means we need to start preparing our churches for a new generation.

Essentially, what this position means is that, even though evangelicals realize they have lost the same-sex marriage battle, they want the beliefs of Americans who oppose homosexual marriage on religious grounds be respected. What they do not say is what that means in terms of real-world actions, responses, and policy.

Some see this religious liberty argument as a convenient receptacle into which to pour anything that someone sees as a religious basis to deny others rights, whether it be marriage or birth control. Once in that receptacle, their actions would be protected by that umbrella, even if that means denying business service to gay people, unmarried couples, Muslims, or people with tattoos.

D.C.'s Historic First Libertarian Primary Tuesday

There are 4 political party primaries in Washington, D.C. Tuesday - Democrats, Republicans, Statehood Greens, and for the first time Libertarians. Libertarians have 7 candidates on the ballot in 7 races, mayor, Congress, Shadow Senator, Shadow Rep, City Council at Large, Ward 3 city council, Ward 6 city council, and a write in candidate for City Council chair. DC allows same day registration for those not registered. Others may ask for special ballots to vote in the primary of their choice.

"Friends and Neighbors -

"Please vote in the primary election today to liberate and empower individuals to succeed. Tell the establishment that we will challenge their authority, which rewards the power elite and special interests who feed off the misery of the least advantaged.

"Vote Pranav Badhwar for Ward 6 on April 1st. And vote for the full slate of Libertarian candidates. Write-in our names on any ballot, even if you are not a registered Libertarian. The slate is here: http://www.dclibertarians2014.blogspot.com

"With fewer taxes and regulations we can: Improve Schools: Charters effectively deliver education at about 40% of the cost of the almost $30,000 in per pupil spending. Reduce DCPS' central planning authority and put authority over the budget and operations in the hands of traditional public school principals and parents who can adjust staffing to meet the unique needs of their students. Improve educational effectiveness to reduce poverty, crime, homelessness, and taxes.

"Create Jobs: Eliminate or reduce business licenses and fees, including the need for six years of education and experience for interior decorators, one year training for pest control applicators, and thirty-nine other restrictions on professions which don't require a college degree and which erect barriers for those already disadvantaged by government schools. Increase jobs to reduce poverty, crime, homelessness, and taxes.

"Reduce Crime: Free police to pursue non-violent drug offenders and focus them on real crimes of violence, theft, and fraud. Reduce street violence by eliminating aggressive prosecution of victimless crimes. Stop criminalizing non-violent drug offenders and stunting their ability to get jobs and housing, forcing them into a cycle of poverty and crime and making them into wards of the state. Protect rights to reduce poverty, crime, homelessness, and taxes."

The Galpagos Islands: Darwin's inspiration

Blue-footed boobies

The first leg of our journey took us from Baltra Island to its neighbour, Santa Cruz. We stopped at Dragon Hill, a jagged peak presiding ominously over the land inhabited by the iguanas after which it is named. Away from the beach the landscape gave way to miles of bushy scrubland. Yet, even in such an apparently uninhabitable environment, life had flourished. There were finches perched among cactus spines; yellow warblers busying themselves in the bushes; and many iguanas.

The sun began its descent, burnishing the landscape with gold. The sandy trail opened up to a large lagoon. And there, wading through the silence, was a pair of flamingos. Salmon-pink against the blue lagoon, they dipped like ballet dancers towards their reflections. One stepped close enough for us to hear it dabbling as it cupped its beak through the shallows. I began to understand why Darwin described the islands animals as strangers to man. So unafraid of our presence were they that it was as if we had walked into their Arcadian world unseen.

Darwin frequently put the animals naivety to the test. He sat astride the native giant tortoises and, using a few raps on the hinder part of their shell, discovered he could ride them. (He also noted that the young tortoises were excellent in soup.) He flung a marine iguana into the sea to see how it would react when frightened, and pulled a burrowing iguana out of its hole by the tail.

On our first evening we were served dinner before setting sail for Isabela Island. I later realised that this was to ensure that the food remained on the table. My stomach proved a less successful receptacle. The passage was unforgivingly rough and our boat listed so violently I thought I would roll out of my bunk. It was a relief at 6am to hear the running chain of the anchor and know that we had neared dry land.

It was time for our first snorkel. The clear turquoise water, sparkling under the equatorial sun, had every appearance of enticing warmth. But during the dry season (June to December) the Humboldt Current sweeps north from Chile, bringing an array of wildlife, but also cold water. It cant be that bad, I thought, Im used to frigid English beaches. The immersion was overwhelming; the cold gripped my body as the water filled my wetsuit. A chorus of yelps piping through my fellow voyagers snorkels told me that I was not alone in my sensations.

The islands most famous inhabitant, the giant tortoise

But I soon forgot about my shivering limbs. Almost immediately we were greeted by a couple of playful young sea lions. They wheeled and arced around us, diving low in a stream of bubbles before reappearing as if to ask why we hadnt followed. One put its whiskered nose up to mine and peered into my mask. They were as excited to see us as we them.

Almost every day we had an opportunity to snorkel, and never did it disappoint. Turtles were the highlight of one swim I gave up counting at 30. Some dived with graceful strokes, some surfaced to let out a puff of air, others allowed themselves to be dragged back and forth by the waves.

On another swim, I was astonished to come across a whitetip reef shark barely 6ft away. Seconds later I realised I was drifting above a school of dozens. And I had woken them up. I knew that reef sharks do not usually attack humans, but I wasnt sure if that would be true if they were disturbed. When I noticed that one was circling, carefully watching me with hollow black eyes and a thin crack of a smile, I decided it was time to move on.

The human 'hairless' gene identified: One form of baldness explained

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE:

1-Apr-2014

Contact: Cody Mooneyhan cmooneyhan@faseb.org 301-634-7104 Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology

It's not a hair-brained idea: A new research report appearing in the April 2014 issue of The FASEB Journal explains why people with a rare balding condition called "atrichia with papular lesions" lose their hair, and it identifies a strategy for reversing this hair loss. Specifically the report shows for the first time that the "human hairless gene" imparts an essential role in hair biology by regulating a subset of other hair genes. This newly discovered molecular function likely explains why mutations in the hairless gene contribute to the pathogenesis of atrichia with papular lesions. In addition, this gene also has also been shown to function as a tumor suppressor gene in the skin, raising hope for developing new approaches in the treatment of skin disorders and/or some cancers.

"Identification of hairless as a histone demethylase may shed new insights into its mechanism of action in regulating skin and hair disorders," said Angela M. Christiano, Ph.D., FACMG, a researcher involved in the work from the Departments of Dermatology and Genetics and Development at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, NY. "The genes identified in this study could open up new opportunities for developing mechanism-driven approaches for future prevention or treatment of skin diseases including skin cancer and rare forms of hair loss."

To make their discovery, Christiano and colleagues defined the histone demethylase function of the human hairless gene, both in vitro and using cultured human cells. When the hairless protein was mixed with specific histone substrates under defined reaction conditions, the hairless protein causes a reduction in the level of methylation modification of the histone substrates. Similarly, upon expression of normal hairless protein, but not a mutant form of the hairless protein, researchers observed a drastic loss of histone methylation in human cells. This suggests that this may be the "on/off" switch for hair growth as well as a promising target for some types of skin disease.

"Humans have tried everything to keep their hair, from snake oils to spray-on bald spot solutions," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal. "Now, however, we are finally getting to the root of the problem to manipulate one of the switches that control hair growth."
