Burma's Inle Lake under threat from rapid tourist development

Noisy tourist longboats clog the narrow canals through stilt villages and floating gardens, and there are growing problems with rubbish disposal and water pollution.

"Small children leg-row little skiffs which are easily upset by tourist boats, everyone gets stared at and can't get around easily from their homes to their floating vegetable gardens. It all has the makings of a social and environmental disaster."

William Bleisch, a program director and researcher for the China Exploration and Research Society, described such alpine lakes in Southeast Asia as the Galpagos of Asia.

He told National Geographic that in three years of research however, he has found only 9 of the 17 endemic and range-restricted species historically reported in Inle Lake.

"We're still hopeful for the others, but some of them may be gone already, and others seem to be much rarer than they were in the past," he said, adding that it is also difficult now to find a pure specimen of the once prevalent endemic Inle carp.

Paul Craven, a travel consultant for Burma at Steppes Travel who knows the Inle area well, said: The villages of the lake do benefit from tourism, through employment and people buying things, but there is pollution from these boats and the lake is very shallow."

New hotels are being concentrated on the shore edge at Nyaungshwe, a former fishing village but now the lakes tourism hub. The plaster is hardly dry before they are opened to tourists, Mr Craven said.

He thinks part of the solution would be to spread tourism around.

Inle Lake is a jewel but there are other places in the country that, in different ways, are equally attractive, he said. But tourism is still very new and these areas dont have the facilities yet and the road infrastructure is bad.

I am being told by ground agents that the new buildings are far enough away from the shoreline and from each other, but only time will tell whether the development will be sustainable," he added.

Cyborg: 'Fake Fighter' Ronda Rousey Is Running from Me

While many fans and analysts believe a loss against undefeated fight veteran Jorina Baars in a Muay Thai bout late last month has derailed her hopes of a superfight with Ronda Rousey, Cristiane "Cyborg" Justino believes otherwise.

The current Invicta FC women's featherweight champion still has her UFC bantamweight counterpart in her crosshairs, as she told AXS TV'sInside MMA(transcription per MixedMartialArts.com).

"Ronda, she did an interview and she said '145 for Gina,' you know," said Justino. "Only for Gina, not for me She run from me, you know. And I think she's a fake fighter. Because when you're a true fighter, you fight everyone...Ronda at 145. It's perfect."

In a media scrum just under a month ago, perMMAJunkie.com, the "Rowdy" UFC champion stated that the only opponent she would move up to featherweight for is Gina Carano.

Rumors have been swirling in recent weeks over a possible Rousey vs. Carano showdown this summer, and while that remains to be seen, Carano said she is planning to meetwith UFC president Dana Whitethis week in an appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show.

Justino has not competed in an MMA fight since July, when she captured the vacant Invicta FC women's 145-pound championship in a rematch with Marloes Coenen, finishing the fight with strikes in the fourth round.

The musclebound brawler has scored back-to-back TKO victories under the Invicta FC banner since testing positive for the anabolic steroid stanozolol shortly after a December 2011 win over Hiroko Yamanaka.

Meanwhile, Rousey improved her undefeated MMA record to 9-0 after she scored a quick Round 1 TKO over fellow former Olympic medalist Sara McMann at UFC 170 in February.

The matchup marked the first time Rousey won a fight by something other than her patented armbar.

Rousey does not have her next bout booked yet, though Carano and top contender Cat Zingano are two strong possibilities outside of Cyborg.

Torontos Beaches Easter Parade declared political-free zone

The Easter Parade, a decades-old tradition in Torontos Beaches neighbourhood, will be missing a familiar sight this year politicians.

The local Lions Club that organizes the spring event has declared the march along Queen Street East a political-free zone, a move it says is aimed at returning the parade to community and families. Organizers deny the move was taken to keep the citys controversial leader, Rob Ford, from pitching chocolates at the crowd as he has since taking office.

But the change in policy has left Torontos mayor with 10,000 Easter eggs on his hands. Mr. Ford says he ordered the candy before hearing he would no longer be welcomed at the parade. Hes hoping to donate the chocolate to the Lions Club anyway, even if he is not allowed to distribute it in person.

What can you do? Mr. Ford said Tuesday, after wheeling out a skid piled with boxes of chocolate from his office to show reporters. If they dont want us there, they dont want us there. I respect their decision.

Mr. Ford said he only learned of the new policy in a letter from organizers Tuesday morning. An e-mail from Mr. Fords office shows his staff contacted the Lions Club on April 1 about marching in the event.

I understand what they are doing ...I wish they would have told me a little earlier, Mr. Ford said before taking the chocolate back inside his office. I gotta see if they want my eggs.

Parade director Keith Begley said organizers took the step anticipating increased interest in the event in an election year.

We thought it was easier to have a parade for the sake of the Easter parade and eliminate all of the hassles that go along with politics, Mr. Begley said, himself a former candidate for councillor in the 2010 election. We just thought it was time to eliminate all of them.

Organizers of the Santa Claus parade last year told Mr. Ford he was not welcome in the annual event after he admitted to smoking crack cocaine. Mr. Begley said the Lions Club sent out a letter to all three of the areas incumbents Councillor Mary Margaret McMahon, MPP Michael Prue and MP Michael Kellway outlining the new policy. It sent the same letter to Mr. Fords office when he recently applied to march.

In an effort to maintain harmony amongst its members the Toronto Beaches Lions Club has always restricted its involvement and exposure to anything of a political nature, the letter reads.

Politicians asked to stay away from Beaches Easter Parade: report

The organizers of the upcoming Beaches Easter Parade have a message for politicians: stay away.

The Toronto Beaches Lions Club wants to make the parade a political-free zone, and is encouraging elected officials, including mayoral candidates, not to use the event as a campaign venue.

Officials said they want the parade to be about community and families, and not about the hotly-contested race for mayor.

Mayoral candidates John Tory and Karen Stintz told the Toronto Sun they wont be attending.

Mayor Rob Ford said he received an invitation from the parade organizers and has not yet been told were not invited.

We still havent gotten a formal non-invite to the parade. We just heard it through the news, Ford told reporters at city hall on Tuesday afternoon.

The mayor said he respects their decision.

Im not going to be there If they dont want us there, they dont want us there, Ford said.

Theyre probably thinking now that its an election year, there will be a lot of candidates there, no doubt, and they dont want to turn it political, and I understand that.

Earth observation enters next phase

Source: Copernicus/ESA

Europe has launched the first satellite of what is heralded as one of the most ambitious Earth-observation programmes ever. On 3 April, a Soyuz rocket dispatched into orbit the Sentinel-1A probe, the first craft of a planned constellation of six Sentinel families set to be launched by the end of the decade. Together, the satellites will offer unprecedented long-term monitoring of the planets land, water and atmosphere.

The Sentinels will be the core of the 8.4-billion (US$11.5-billion) Copernicus programme, which is managed by the European Commission. Copernicus will also draw in data from about 30other satellites, and from ocean buoys, weather stations and air-quality monitoring networks.

The Sentinels and Copernicus have the potential to become the worlds most comprehensive Earth-monitoring system, says Zbynek Malenovsky, who studies vegetation using remote sensing at the University of Wollongong in Australia.

Copernicus was designed by the European Union (EU) and the European Space Agency (ESA) to help the European Commission and EU member states to develop environmental policies and monitor the results. Its data will be used to create services for myriad practical applications, including ice mapping, agriculture management, climate-change forecasting and disaster response. The idea is to produce images, maps and models in near real time, much as is done with weather monitoring, but for many more variables.

Unlike most previous Earth-observation missions, the Sentinels will be replaced regularly as they age. This will help to generate long-term cross-calibrated data sets of a variety of imagery and measurements, says Cathy Clerbaux, an atmospheric scientist at the LATMOS atmosphere and astrophysics research institute in Paris. Its not easy to connect data series such as measurements of pollutants, ozone or greenhouse gases when you have different instruments, and gaps between missions, she says.

The data will be free for anyone to access and use. But researchers will enjoy formal user status alongside public authorities, and will thus have privileged access, including dedicated help desks and support. Scientists are now much more integrated into the user community, and not neglected as they have been in the past, when the focus was more on the operational side, says Josef Aschbacher, head of ESAs Copernicus office. I expect scientists to be the number-one user group.

Sentinel-1A is the first of two identical satellites; 1B is set to be launched in the next 18months. Both contain a radar system that can see in darkness and through clouds, unlike the optical instruments on many satellites. This will allow them to continuously image cloudy areas such as tropical forests. They will operate in tandem, cutting down the time between flyovers of the same point on Earth (known as revisit time), and enabling quick-succession imaging to measure, for example, ground deformation from earthquakes.

Sentinels 2 to 5 will have different goals. Between them, they will use optical sensors, radiometers and spectrometers to measure everything from sea temperatures to air pollution. In addition, a Sentinel-5 Precursor satellite will be launched in 2016 to minimize the shortfall in atmospheric data-gathering following the 2012 loss of the European Envisat satellite. A sixth Sentinel, a radar altimeter that will measure sea-surface heights, is also under discussion (see Watchers in the skies).

These diverse measurements of the major components of Earth systems will make the Sentinels very valuable, says Richard Anthes, emeritus president of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado. A balanced suite of Earth observations is required for observing and understanding Earth as an interconnected system, he says.
