There are many distinctive elements to Stanley Kubrick's 1968 2001: A Space Odyssey - from extraordinary visual effects to challenging themes, from brilliant production design to inventive use of music. One of its most distinctive details is the soft, deceptively calm voice of HAL, the super computer, who suddenly goes rogue during the space mission that takes up the second half of the film.
Yet it's not a voice the people making the movie ever heard on set. Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood, both 77, played the two astronauts, Dave Bowman and Frank Poole, whose encounters with HAL are part of cinema history. But Kubrick hadn't found the voice he wanted for HAL, they recall, so during production various people delivered HAL's dialogue.
Dullea - whose character hears that famous, ominous line ''I'm afraid I can't do that, Dave'' - often found himself talking to the first assistant director, Derek Cracknell, whose Cockney accent he's quick to imitate. ''It was like working with Michael Caine,'' he says. ''In my case,'' says Lockwood, ''Stanley played HAL with me a couple of times.''

At first, Kubrick thought of using a female voice, and calling the computer Athena. Then he was going to cast American actor Martin Balsam, but felt he sounded too New York. Nigel Davenport was on set for a week, Dullea says, before Kubrick decided he was too English.

It wasn't until post-production that Kubrick settled on Canadian actor Douglas Rain.
Dullea and Lockwood are in Melbourne this week to do a Q&A session after a screening of a 70mm print at the Astor Theatre on Friday, and to appear at Supanova pop culture expo at the Showgrounds at the weekend.
They are happy to talk about the tiniest detail of 2001, to reflect on what Lockwood calls ''a societal game-changer'', and to talk about a director who was open to anything and everything. And there are new things for them to learn about the film after all this time.

Deemed Heartbleed, the bug targets a specific program called Open SSL. The program is designed to keep information like usernames, passwords, credit card numbers, bank accounts, ect. encrypted so anyone who may hack into the sites cant read it. Heartbleed makes it possible for hackers to decode that information and store it. Some estimate more than 65% of Internet sites use SSL.
What makes the problem more serious is that each site is in charge of fixing their own problem and theres nothing internet users can do about it until they do.
Willie Kerns with Smarthpath Technologies said its one of the worst breeches in history.
This has proven even what you think is safe, isn't safe, he said.
He said if it makes consumers feel better they can change the passwords to all of their accounts, but its not going to stop Heartbleed from reading the information if the site hasnt fixed it yet. The best defense is to avoid any online banking, shopping, or even browsing unfamiliar sites until the bug has been detained. Kerns estimates it will only take a few days before most major sites are secure, but smaller sites could take longer.
The best advice is to check and double check before you sign in.

Newswise NEW YORK, NY (April 9, 2014) Dr. Mahendra Rao, who has directed the Center for Regenerative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health (NIH CRM) since 2010, will join The New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) Research Institute as its Vice President for Regenerative Medicine, a newly created position, Susan Solomon, NYSCF Chief Executive Officer, announced today.
Dr. Rao, who holds an MD degree and a PhD in developmental neurobiology, is one of the nations most prominent stem cell scientists. He has over twenty years of experience in all aspects of the stem cell field including government, academia, and business. Before joining the NIH, Dr. Rao spent six years as the vice president of Regenerative Medicine at Life Technologies, Inc. MANILA - The National Bureau of Investigation-Anti-Organized and Transnational Crime Division (NBI-AOTCD) has filed a case against an allegedly fake doctor who once administered stem cell therapy on former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
Members of the NBI-AOCTD, headed by Head Agent Rommel J. Vallejo, acted on the complaint filed by Dr. Eunice Salazar-Abad, who worked as an aesthetic physician for Antonia Carandang-Park.
The latter is the owner of Green and Young Health and Wellness Center based in San Jose, Tagaytay City.
Vallejo said: Even for a short period of time working at the clinic, she began to notice some irregularities and the unorthodox method being applied by Park in treating the patients. She discovered too, that Park is using her name and her license number in dealing with patients.
Salazar-Abad then verified with the Professional Regulation Commission to check if Park is a licensed doctor,
Based on a document dated August 12, 2013, the PRC certified that after a diligent search, the name Antonia Carandang Park does not appear in the database of Physician, which contains the names of those duly authorized to practice medicine in the Philippines.
The document reads, this certification is issued upon request of the Board of Medicine for whatever legal purpose it may serve.
Park gained popularity when she treated Arroyo, who had been complaining of pains due to a cervical spine surgery.
Salazar-Abad noted Park did not make any effort to speak up when reports tagged her as a doctor. She said Park also misrepresented herself as an oncologist.
Vallejo said Park filed her counter-affidavit on August 22, saying she is not a quack doctor.

Alices Woodland Easter Egg Trail at Loyola Hall Jesuit Spirituality Centre takes place on Easter Monday
The last event to mark the closure of a famous Merseyside spirituality retreat centre has sold out.
The 500 tickets for the Alices Woodland Easter Egg Trail at Loyola Hall Jesuit Spirituality Centre, at Rainhill, on Easter Monday, sold out within a few weeks of going on sale.
Loyola Hall, a Regency- style mansion built in 1824 and run by the Jesuits for residential and day religious spirituality courses for the last 91 years, will be put up for sale after the family event.
The Alice In Wonderland theme will make full use of the Halls 20 acres of gardens and woodland, with the White Rabbit greeting children at the gates, an Easter Egg hunt, croquet on the lawn and the Mad Hatter and Caterpillar telling stories in the grottoes.
Money raised by the Easter Egg Hunt will be split between Willowbrook Hospice, St Helens staging the Rainhill Gala on May 26.
Steve Clarke, Rainhill Gala chairman, said: Were staging the Easter Trail at Loyola Hall as we knew it was closing and this could be the last time the public can look around.
We set a limit of 500 tickets but cant believe the demand which has been huge and theyve all gone within a couple of weeks.
It makes a great start to the Rainhill Gala fundraising and were also holding a barn dance at Rainhill Village Hall on April 12, to raise more money.
Loyola Hall was the family home of the Brethertons, who owned much of Rainhill. Devout Roman Catholics, they bequeathed the Hall to the Jesuits in 1923.

On March 29 at The Bluestone, roeVy delivered the gospel of EDM from a double-laptop pulpit and baptized their flock of loyal party-goers in a tidal wave of heavy bass. Somewhere between the flashing pentagram projections and the neon angel wings, I remembered I was in a defunct house of the Lord.
I participated in a beat-drop Black Mass with a pair of Jawas, and Im not even sorry.
I started the night right with some cheap drinks and killer tunes at Little Rock Bars White Trash a Go-Go. The free-flowing Jameson accented by The Jim Carroll Band blasting through the speakers harkened back to my dirty dive-bar days.
We arrived at The Bluestone a quarter till midnight. A sea of neon leg-warmers and painted-up pixies greeted us. Women were hula-hooping and playing with glow sticks in one corner, while the less-dedicated onlookers leaned against the bar.
More than 17 DJs were billed to play on one of the three stages. Since it was impossible to see every act, we posted up outside by the densely populated outdoor stage to watch dancing co-eds and bass junkies press up against the folding table with the DJs rig.
When roeVy went on at 1 a.m., I was backstage. The duo pulled on their masks and entered the stage to a cheering crowd. Once the first note hit the speakers, the whole venue started pulsating. The look of total awe mixed with terrifying excitement came across the faces of everyone in the crowd simultaneously. Obviously the real party was on the dance floor, not in the catacombs behind the stage.
I rejoined the rest of the congregation on the main dance floor. The words Die and Death is only the beginning flashed between the pentagram imagery. I was at a rave, a metal concert and a tent revival all at once. It seemed like everybody around me was having a transcendent experience by allowing roeVys audio/visual assault to purge their stress or anger. For a brief moment, this was the only reality that mattered.
By the end of the set, I was completely exhausted. I felt completely drained, but content. Though I didnt make it to bed until dawn, I dont remember ever sleeping so well.
I guess if youre scared, go to church; if you rage, go to roeVy.

Dressed in a loincloth, Baba Ramdev whips through a series of yoga poses as millions watch him on television. The sun has just begun to peep over the horizon but the hirsute guru is already leading his charges. If you sweat this much in the morning, you will never get old, he says, the left eye winking involuntarily. Ramdev says pranayama, the art of breath control, can cure an array of diseases. Its practice leads to a surge in kundalini energy, he intones as his belly makes waves with each sharp intake of air. Around him, the men and women start breathing in unison, eyes closed. Some faces begin to show a near-mystical glow. They are entering the zone.
Is yoga as pensive an activity as Ramdev wants it to be? Not quite. Some yoga teachers, in the true tradition of yogic postures, are turning the exercise culture on its head. They crack jokes, chant to peppy songs and hang out with disciples once the sessions are over. Garima Batra Sharma, founder of The Yoga Lounge, believes in being less solemn. There is a perception we belong to another planet. But I don't let people take things too seriously in my class, she says. The idea is not attainment, she explains, flow instead. Really? So, what about obtaining spiritual creaminess? Very few seek that. Most come to lose weight.
These yoga gurus dont claim to be saints or prophets or that they emit cosmic energy. I am a new-age yogini. I love to dance, travel and dress excitingly, says Deepika Mehta, who coached actors Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Bipasha Basu for Dhoom 2. Must the road to enlightenment be paved in sincerity? Not all all. Fun is important. Once in a while, I crack a joke. After class, I hang out with students. We chill out, drink coconut water, get breakfast and get really silly sometimes, laughs Mehta.
Television yoga guru Suneel Singh, 52, too, has a tendency to lighten things up. There are two simple therapies. One is laughter yoga and the other, clapping yoga, he says. Everyone laughs. Theres no judgement." Singh belives ego is the enemy of both humour and yoga.
The new bunch of yoga teachers do not believe in giving gyan. Not everyone is on a spiritual path. Some are in search of a social environment, too, says Navneet Joshi, who trains corporate clients of Kairali Ayurvedic Group. Sharma remembers during the early days of her studio when she had shown the door to a man who had come in search of phone numbers rather than enlightenment. But Joshi believes there is scope for spiritual networking, and Sharma allows social networking by way of yoga selfies (self-photos). I understand the excitement that comes when doing the headstand for the first time. I oblige them with a picture that I email to them.

Pune-based Jaspreet Singh, a yogi, cites the tranquillity he has found after twisting his body into knots. Sometimes, he says, his third eye itches. Who your yoga teacher is and what he represents are no small matters in modern life, he says. Once I fell asleep in the middle of savasana (corpse pose) and started to snore lightly (I was told). They just left me there until the class ended. I woke up to an empty room and saw the teacher putting away the mats. But there is no embarrassment here. Singh says, If we refuse to feel embarrassed, liberation is ours.
Celebrity yoga teacher Payal Gidwani, who coaches star couple Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif Ali Khan, says there is no need to feel ashamed, even when some poses force wind out. This is the purpose of yoga -- to relieve suffering, and flatulence. Relieving wind is illusory, philosophises Singh. You are not the body, and therefore not the karta (doer).
Yet the fear of being embarrassed refuses to let go. As Gidwani points out, Thousands of years ago, yoga was practiced only by men. It was designed by men, for men. Yet today, getting the men in is not always easy. Sharma says, There's one man for every five women in a class. Mostly, men accompany wives. Also, most men leave after a month or two. It's the women who are consistent.
Paloma Gangopadhyay, director, Bikram Yoga India, says, men initially find themselves stiff and inflexible. But the 26 postures done in a studio that is toasty at 42 degrees Celsius gets them hooked.

A Russian cargo ship linked up with the International Space Station on Wednesday to deliver tons of vital supplies after a swift, six-hour trip to the orbiting outpost.
The unmanned Progress 55 spacecraft linked up with the space station at 5:14 p.m. ET, nearly six hours after launching into orbit atop a Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in the Central Asian nation of Kazakhstan.
The Progress 55 spacecraft performed flawlessly during a "silky smooth six-hour adventure," NASA spokesman Rob Navias said on NASA TV. [See photos of the Progress 55's launch to the space station]

Russian space officials applauded the docking success, with the space station's cosmonauts hailing Progress 55 as "a great present for Cosmonautics Day." April 12 is Cosmonautics Day in Russia, a holiday that celebrates the 1961 launch of Yuri Gagarin on the world's first human spaceflight.
Progress 55 (also known as the Progress M-23M) brought 1,764 pounds of propellant, 926 pounds of water, 105 pounds of oxygen and 3,126 pounds of food, science experiments and other supplies for the station's six crew members. The crew includes NASA's Rick Mastracchio and Steve Swanson; Russian cosmonauts Alexander Skvortsov, Mikhail Tyurin and Oleg Artemyev; and Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata.
Russia's Progress vehicles have been making the six-hour trips to the station since 2012. The Soyuz capsules that ferry astronauts and cosmonauts to and from the station have done the same express flight since last year. Before the fast-track trips, Progress and Soyuz spacecraft took two days to reach the station.
When Swanson, Skvortsov and Artemyev launched from Baikonur about two weeks ago, they were expected to make an express trip to the station; however, due to a slight issue with the positioning of the Soyuz after launch, they instead took two days to dock with the space station.
