Men will see you as equals till you behave like one: Neelu Singh

The author has posted comments on this articleReeba Zachariah & Vipashana V K, TNN | Apr 14, 2014, 05.40AM IST MUMBAI: Curiosity, they say, kills the cat. But in Neelu Singh's case it landed her in the travel industry. A graduate in microbiology, she picked up a summer job at SITA World Travel in Agra where her father, an army officer, was posted to while away time. But the brief stint deepened her curiosity for the industry and the four months stay in 1993 turned into an eventful 12-year career journey at the travel agency.

In 2000, when Kuoni acquired SITA, the deal not only transformed the Swiss tour operator's India story but also Singh's professional path. Singh, who by then was based in SITA's Delhi office, had to move to Mumbai for greater responsibilities at the travel solutions company. Five years later, when the online travel industry was at the cusp of a boom, she quit to head ezeego1.com, a unit of Cox & Kings.

"I was done with offline and I wanted to explore the online world," says the chief operating officer. "I felt if I don't do it now, I would be sitting dead in some corner of the office. It also gave me an opportunity to upscale my skills and move several notches up."

Even after nine years at ezeego1, her enthusiasm hasn't dimmed a bit. She credits "a young team" that keeps her charged to get through the 24x7 online world. At 41, Singh says she is the oldest in the team of 350. As for her personal life, this mother of a 10-year-old son says that she has been blessed as she hasn't faced any major challenge.

"Things have always fallen in place. Nothing has changed because of marriage and motherhood. In fact, life has become more beautiful." Singh, a practising Buddhist for two decades, stresses that mutual respect and understanding of each other's work pressures are the keys to a healthy relationship.

As for professional relationships with male colleagues, Singh warns women against putting pressure on themselves and feeling any lesser than men. "Women need to get out of that mindset. When they do, the world around will change. Men are happy to treat you as equals till you behave like one," says Singh, whose favourite holiday destination is the "picture perfect" Ireland. "If women defeat themselves, nothing can be done. Period."

Top 25 Destinations In The World, According To TripAdvisors Vast Travel Community

Thats why the newly announced 2014 Travelers Choice awards for destinations is seen as a significant benchmark. It provides a barometer for whats in and whats out in global travel and offers a way of assessing emerging trends that will define the $6 trillion industry in the coming years.

"Our global travelers are the tastemakers for uncovering the best places to visit around the world," Barbara Messing, chief marketing officer for TripAdvisor, boasted in a summary of the report, which looked at the millions of reviews and opinions of TripAdvisor travelers. Researchers used an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, attractions and restaurants in destinations worldwide, gathered over a 12-month period, to come up with their results.

Using those parameters, Asian destinations shined the brightest in 2014. Six of the top 25 spots were from Asia, while four Asian cities -- Beijing, Shanghai, Hanoi and Siem Reap (home of Cambodias Angkor Wat) -- shot up at least 10 places year-over-year.

Yet, it was the iconic bridge between the East and West, Istanbul, which climbed 11 spots to top TripAdvisors list in 2014. Its enviable ranking is a testament to the citys tenacity, given the rash of political instability in recent months.

Perennial favorites Rome and London rounded out the top three, while Dubai, Budapest and Lisbon entered the Travelers Choice top 25 for the first time.

In addition to its list of global movers and shakers, TripAdvisor also issued individual rankings for Africa, Asia, Australia, Canada, the Caribbean, Central America, Europe, China, Middle East, Russia, South America, the South Pacific, the UK and the U.S. The travel giants list of domestic U.S. destinations showed that southern charm, particularly in the Lone Star State, is sweeping the nation.

Indeed, 10 of the top 25 destinations in the U.S. are located in southern states. The Texas hubs of Houston, San Antonio and Austin saw the biggest gains, while Atlanta and Nashville entered the top 25 for the first time.

Scroll down for a complete look at the top 25 U.S. destinations in 2014, or click through the slideshow above for a journey through the international hotspots. Note that +/- denotes a change in ranking year-over-year, 0 signals no change, while new means the destination is new to the top 25.

At the heart of the facility is an IBM super computer dubbed Blue Gene which the US-based tech giant provided to the Philippine government.

The bioinformatics unit complements the next generation sequencing services being offered by the centers DNA Sequencing Core Facility (DSCF).

It offers high-performance computing resources, hardware and software, needed to analyze, manage/curate, and archive massive amount of data derived from next-generation sequencing.

Apart from data storage and analytics, researchers working with genomics-based technologies may also avail of the CFBs custom-made/client-focused services such as provision of software, specialized databases or technical support for varied bioinformatics analyses, and also the use and access to high-performance computing resources.

The Core Facility for Bioinformatics, a part of the research project capability building in R&D genomics is now open to local researchers through the grant from the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD), said Dr. Carmencita D. Padilla, executive director of the PGC.

In 2012, IBM teamed up with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to establish the first Philippine Systems and Technology R&D Lab.

As part of the initiative, the DOST also received an IBM Blue Gene/P super computer for use in research and development projects aligned with the national agenda, which includes improving weather forecasts, disaster management, precision agriculture, and health.

Although primarily seen as a catalyst in the advancement of bioinformatics and computational genomics research in the country, the CFB is also designed to contribute in addressing the lack of local experts in bioinformatics/computational biology.

Will Liverpool win the Premier League? 'Super computer' says…

Liverpool are now the favourites to win their first title of the Premier League era following their thrilling win against Man City.

The last time the Reds were crowned champions of England Alan Hansen was still captain, but the 3-2 win at Anfield has put the title in their hands.

This has been reflected by those smart chaps at Bloomberg, whose projections have Liverpool pipping Man City by two points come the season's conclusion, giving the Redmen a 51.34 per cent chance of winning a first league title in almost 24 years.

However, it is bad news for all those Tottenham fans who claim they do not want Europa League football next season. Bloomberg's 'super computer' have them edging Man United to sixth place, while sadly for Roberto Martinez, Everton will not cap his excellent debut season with a Champions League spot.

At the other end of the table, Fulham are being tipped to survive the drop at the expense of Norwich, who they recently beat 1-0 to secure three much needed points.

The projected table makes interesting reading for Man City fans though, despite many believing they will still win the Premier League.

Liverpool fans, will you win the Premier League? Man City fans do you agree with the projected final table?

UCI Team Discovers Bone Marrow Stem Cells' Potential In Stroke Recovery

By Estel Grace Masangkay

Bone marrow stem cells may help in stroke recovery, according to a team of researchers from the University of California, Irvines Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center.

Neurologist Dr. Steven Cramer and biomedical engineer Weian Zhao together analyzed 46 studies evaluating the use of a type of multipotent adult stem cells mostly processed from the bone marrow called mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) in animal models of stroke. Results showed that MSCs were superior to control therapy in 44 out of the 46 studies.

Dr. Cramer said Stroke remains a major cause of disability, and we are encouraged that the preclinical evidence shows [MSCs] efficacy with ischemic stroke. MSCs are of particular interest because they come from bone marrow, which is readily available, and are relatively easy to culture. In addition, they already have demonstrated value when used to treat other human diseases.

The MSCs effect on functional recovery was shown to be robust regardless of other factors such as dosage, time of administration relative to the stroke onset, or administration method. An earlier report focusing on MSC mechanisms of action explained how the cells were attracted to the injury sites and began releasing a wide range of molecules in response to signals emitted by the damaged areas. The molecules in turn stimulate several activities including blood vessel creation for enhanced circulation, protection of vulnerable cells, brain cell growth, and others. The MSCs also fostered an environment conducive to brain repair.

We conclude that MSCs have consistently improved multiple outcome measures, with very large effect sizes, in a high number of animal studies and, therefore, that these findings should be the foundation of further studies on the use of MSCs in the treatment of ischemic stroke in humans, said Dr. Cramer.

The UCI teams analysis appeared in the April 8 issue of Neurology.

Psalms, Tweets and spirituality in the digital age

FROM THE PSALMS TO THE CLOUD: CONNECTING TO THE DIGITAL AGE By Maria Mankin and Maren C. Tirabassi Published by Pilgrim Press, $18

You dont have to be an environmentalist to wonder about technology. Will it be our great savior or will it be another thorn in the flesh, another opportunity to hear Henry David Thoreaus lament?

"But lo! Men have become the tools of their tools," he wrote in 1854's Walden.

Inside From the Psalms to the Cloud: Connecting to the Digital Age lies an excellent collection of prayers and worship materials that finds a way to help us understand the tool of technology. It is a useful green book, on that gives us a way out of the totalitarian world of the market and into a world that we make with words.

It seems just about everybody is on the other side of the time famine -- that pervasive sense that there is not enough time to do what we want to do -- and the trust famine -- that is, with so little time and so much information probing, whos exactly in charge? It seems many are deep into digital and connectivity overload.

As Thoreau observed, are we in charge of our tools and our time, or are our tools and time famine in charge of us?

In this optimistic book, the prophets arrive. Authors Maria Mankin and Maren Tirabassi ask the right question: Can a technology devoted to advertising be useful to spirituality?

They answer with a careful yes, taking us on the long road from the psalms to Twitter, by way of vintage wine in vintage wineskins, uncorked.

Mankin and Tirabassi gather the wisdom from dozens of writers of prayers and liturgies to show us a way to go deep digitally. Whether they are praying for energy that will deeply change all of our clocks, or for the return of the time when sanctuary for immigrants will become again dusty places with pews, or in any of John Dannons exquisite doxologies for the natural and ecclesiastical seasons, or beginning a prayer with the language of To Whom It may Concern, or encourage us to spend a day saying nothing that doesnt need saying.

Space station launch scheduled today, despite dead computer

By Marcia Dunn, Associated Press

Monday, April 14, 2014 | 9:46 a.m.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. The International Space Station is about to get some fresh groceries and material for an urgent repair job.

An unmanned SpaceX rocket was scheduled to blast off at 4:58 p.m. Monday with more than 2 tons of supplies.

NASA spent much of the weekend debating whether to proceed with the launch of the Dragon cargo ship, already a month late. A critical backup computer failed outside the space station Friday; flight controllers were trying to activate it for a routine software load.

Mission managers decided Sunday to stick with the launch plan after making sure everything would be safe. The prime computer has been working fine so far. The plan is to put the solar wings in the proper position for the capsule's arrival soon after the SpaceX launch, in case of additional failures in orbit.

It's the first breakdown ever of one of these so-called space station MDMs, or multiplexer-demultiplexers, used to route computer commands for a wide variety of systems. Forty-five MDMs are scattered around the orbiting lab. The failed one is located outside and therefore will require spacewalking repairs.

The Dragon capsule holds a gasket-like material for next week's computer replacement. This new material was rushed to the launch site over the weekend.

NASA astronauts Rick Mastracchio and Steven Swanson will perform the job next Tuesday. It will take several days to get the replacement computer ready for installing, thus the one-week wait before the spacewalk, NASA's Kenny Todd, a station operations manager, said Monday.

SpaceX Space Exploration Technologies Corp. of California is one of two American companies hired by NASA to fill the cargo gap left when the space shuttles retired in 2011. Orbital Sciences Corp. of Virginia is the other.
